Jung's Liber novus ; edited by Thomas Kirsch and George Hogenson. - London ; New York : Routledge, 2014 xiii, 128 p., [28] p. di tav. : ill. ; 23 cm ISBN 978-0-415-65996-3 In 2010, a conference was held at the San Francisco Jungian Institute which brought together an international group of distinguished scholars in analytical psychology to explore and address critical contextual aspects of ‘The Red Book’ and to debate its importance for current and future Jungian theory and practice. The Red Book: Reflections on C.G. Jung’s Liber Novus is based on that conference, the individual papers have been thoroughly revised and updated for this book and address some of the important questions and issues that were raised at that conference in response to the presentation of these papers. As yet there has been very little published about ‘The Red Book’. The Red Book: Reflections on C.G. Jung’s Liber Novus will contribute to setting the agenda for further research, both scholarly and clinical, in response to Jung’s account of his experiences between 1913-1914, when arguably, the future course of his entire project was set in motion. 150.194 5 RED BOO

War and the making of medieval monastic culture [Risorsa elettronica] / Katharine Allen Smith. - Woodbridge : Boydell & Brewer, 2013 (Studies in the history of medieval religion ; vol. 37) ISBN 978-1-84615-841-4 Monastic culture has generally been seen as set apart from the medieval battlefield, as 'those who prayed' were set apart from 'those who fought'. However, in this first study of the place of war within medieval monastic culture, the author shows the limitations of this division. Through a wide reading of Latin sermons, letters, and hagiography, she identifies a monastic language of war that presented the monk as the archetypal 'soldier of Christ' and his life of prayer as a continuous combat with the devil: indeed, monks' claims to supremacy on the spiritual battlefield grew even louder as Church leaders extended the title of 'soldier of Christ' to lay knights and crusaders. So, while medieval monasteries have traditionally been portrayed as peaceful sanctuaries in a violent world, here the author demonstrates that monastic identity was negotiated through real and imaginary encounters with war, and that the concept of spiritual warfare informed virtually every aspect of life in the cloister. Language and identity [Risorsa elettronica] : discourse in the world / David Evans. - London : Bloomsbury, 2014 ISBN 978-0-5670-4779-3 Language not only expresses identities but also constructs them. Starting from that point, Language and Identity examines the interrelationships between language and identities. It finds that they are so closely interwoven, that words themselves are inscribed with ideological meanings. Words and language constitute meanings within discourses and discourses vary in power. The powerful ones reproduce more powerful meanings, colonize other discourses and marginalize or silence the least powerful languages and cultures. Language and culture death occur in extreme cases of marginalization. This book also demonstrates the socio-economic opportunities offered by language choice and the cultural allegiances of language, where groups have been able to create new lives for themselves by embracing new languages in new countries. Language can be a 'double-edged sword' of opportunity and marginalization. Language and Identity argues that bilingualism and in some cases multilingualism can both promote socio-economic opportunity and combat culture death and marginalization. With sound theoretical perspectives drawing upon the work of Bakhtin, Vygotsky, Gumperz, Foucault and others, this book provides readers with a rationale to redress social injustice in the world by supporting minority linguistic and cultural identities and an acknowledgement that access to language can provide opportunity. E-book Language, borders and identity / edited by Dominic Watt and Carmen Llamas. - Edinburgh : Edinburgh University press, 2014 xvii, 268 p. : ill. ; 24 cm ISBN 978-0-7486-6977-6 This is a wide-ranging and multi-disciplinary discussion of the connections between language, borders and identities. Looking at a broad, geographically diverse spectrum of border contexts, this volume illustrates a range of methodological approaches. It examines political borders that divide monoglossic and heteroglossic territories, as well as regional and local and symbolic borders. The authors assess the linguistic implications of these borders contexts such as language planning and policy (e.g. for multilingual education and protection of minority languages) and border control (via the chapter on language analysis for the determination of origin, 'LADO'). Each border is unique, making generalisations about how language functions in 'borderlands' difficult to formulate but casting the net as wide as we intend will, however, equip us to develop and refine models of how language is used to construct borders, and to indicate on which side of a border speakers situate themselves. It covers political, socio-psychological and symbolic borders. 306.44 LAN BOR Metrolingualism [Risorsa elettronica] : language in the city / Alastair Pennycook and Emi Otsuji. - London ; New York : Routledge, 2015 ISBN 978-1-315-72422-5 This book is about language and the city. Pennycook and Otsuji introduce the notion of 'metrolingualism', showing how language and the city are deeply involved in a perpetual exchange between people, history, migration, architecture, urban landscapes and linguistic resources. Cities and languages are in constant change, as new speakers with new repertoires come into contact as a result of globalization and the increased mobility of people and languages. Metrolingualism sheds light on the ordinariness of linguistic diversity as people go about their daily lives, getting things done, eating and drinking, buying and selling, talking and joking, drawing on whatever linguistic resources are available. Engaging with current debates about multilingualism, and developing a new way of thinking about language, the authors explore language within a number of contemporary urban situations, including cafes, restaurants, shops, streets, construction sites and other places of work, in two diverse cities, Sydney and Tokyo. The Oxford handbook of Internet studies / edited by William H. Dutton. - Oxford : Oxford University Press, 2014 xx, 607 p. ; 25 cm ISBN 978-0-19-870884-1 Internet Studies has been one of the most dynamic and rapidly expanding interdisciplinary fields to emerge over the last decade. The Oxford Handbook of Internet Studies has been designed to provide a valuable resource for academics and students in this area, bringing together leading scholarly perspectives on how the Internet has been studied and how the research agenda should be pursued in the future. The Handbook aims to focus on Internet Studies as an emerging field, each chapter seeking to provide a synthesis and critical assessment of the research in a particular area. Topics covered include social perspectives on the technology of the Internet, its role in everyday life and work, implications for communication, power, and influence, and the governance and regulation of the Internet. 303.483 3 OXF HAN Pragmatics and the English language / Jonathan Culpeper and Michael Haugh. - Basingtoke : Palgrave Macmillan, 2014 xii, 301 p. ; 23 cm. - (Perspectives on the English language) ISBN 978-0-230-55173-2 How do we interpret language and expose its meanings? How does pragmatics describe the English language? Where can we go to acquire a deeper understanding of pragmatics? Pragmatics and the English Language is a bold new textbook that presents an innovative and exciting way of looking at the subject. This new perspective, called integrative pragmatics, steers a course between what have historically been considered irreconcilable perspectives. With an emphasis on empirical data, the book is filled with examples from cartoons, films and historical sources, as well as face-to-face and digitally-mediated interactions, all of which are used to help the reader develop a better understanding of the theory. 306.44 CUL PRA Recovering Scotland's slavery past : the Caribbean connection / edited by T.M. Devine. - Edinburgh : Edinburgh University Press, 2015 xv, 260 p. ; 23 cm ISBN 978-1-4744-0880-6 For more than a century and a half the real story of Scotland's connections to transatlantic slavery has been lost to history and shrouded in myth. There was even denial that the Scots, unlike the English, had any significant involvement in slavery. Scotland saw itself as a pioneering abolitionist nation untainted by a slavery past. This book is the first detailed attempt to challenge these beliefs. Written by the foremost scholars in the field, with findings based on sustained archival research, the volume systematically peels away the mythology and radically revises the traditional picture. In doing so the contributors come to a number of surprising conclusions. Topics covered include national amnesia and slavery, the impact of profits from slavery on Scotland, Scots in the Caribbean sugar islands, compensation paid to Scottish owners when slavery was abolished, domestic controversies on the slave trade, the role of Scots in slave trading from English ports and much else. 306.362 09411 REC SCO

Responses to language varieties : variability, processes and outcomes / edited by Alexei Prikhodkine, Dennis R. Preston. - Amsterdam ; Philadelphia : Benjamins, 2015 xiv, 249 p. : tab., graf. ; 25 cm. - (Impact ; vol. 39) ISBN 978-90-272-5830-4 This book is about responses to language variety - their variability, shape, and content, as well as the variable cognitive and neural pathways underlying them. The chapters explore access to, processing of, and outcomes of that diversity and complexity. Many traditions are represented: from social psychology come classic experimental methods as well as more current discourse-based analyses; anthropology is represented in indexicality, iconization, recursivity, erasure, enregisterment, and ideologies; the sociolinguistic focus on specific rather than global elements that trigger responses is highlighted. The individual chapters address a variety of questions concerning language attitude, belief, and ideology, in some cases singly, in others with a more general focus, including attempts to relate one style of research to another. If we accept the fact that individuals house great variability in the underlying cognitive structures that inform responses, it follows that no single way of eliciting and studying them will do. 306.449 RES TOL Sociolinguistics and mobile communication / Ana Deumert. - Edinburgh : Edinburgh University press, 2014 xi, 200 p. : ill. ; 23 cm. - (Edinburgh sociolinguistics) ISBN 978-0-7486-5574-8 This book applies sociolinguistic methodologies and theories to mobile communication. It explores a wide range of digital applications, including SMS, email, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, chatting, blogging, Wikipedia, Second Life and gaming. It raises important questions about the nature of language, the roles of multimodality and intertextuality in creating meaning, and the realities and consequences of digital linguistic inequality. It explores the formation of virtual communities, ways of online socialising and the performance of the digital 'self'. Based on a multicultural and multilingual approach, it gives a comprehensive and intriguing overview of digital communication. It contains a glossary of relevant terms. It provides a global context which highlights common trends and practices in mobile communication. It utilises extensive original multilingual data within case studies. It discusses new research insights and innovative interdisciplinary approaches. 303.483 3 DEU SOC A sociolinguistics of diaspora [Risorsa elettronica] : Latino practices, identities and ideologies / edited by Rosina Marquez-Reiter and Luisa Martin Rojo. - New York ; London : Routledge, 2014 (Routledge critical studies in multilingualism ; 6) ISBN 978-1-315-88357-1 This volume brings together scholars in sociolinguistics and the sociology of new media and mobile technologies who are working on different social and communicative aspects of the Latino diaspora. There is new interest in the ways in which migrants negotiate and renegotiate identities through their continued interactions with their own culture back home, in the host country, in similar diaspora elsewhere, and with the various "new" cultures of the receiving country. This collection focuses on two broad political and social contexts: the established Latino communities in urban settings in North America and newer Latin American communities in Europe and the Middle East. It explores the role of migration/diaspora in transforming linguistic practices, ideologies, and identities. E-book

The struggle for memory in Latin America [Risorsa elettronica] ; recent history and political violence / edited by Eugenia Allier Montano, Emilio Crenzel. - London : Palgrave Macmillan, 2015 (Memory politics and transitional justice) ISBN 978-1-1375-2734-9 This multi-disciplinary volume analyzes struggles over the memory of past political violence in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, the United States, Guatemala, El Salvador, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, and Uruguay. Each chapter offers a comprehensive history of the political violence that occurred in the second half of the twentieth century, analyzing its links with 1) the international context of the cold war, 2) the particular forms of repression and authoritarianism that prevailed in the domestic setting, 3) the social inequalities that were reinforced, and 4) the political, economic, and cultural transformations that Latin American societies were undergoing at the time. Considering the different paths that Latin American countries have taken in their efforts to confront history, the chapters examine how relevant actors look back on past events and vie with one another to give these events meaning in the public sphere. For each country examined, contributors consider the initiatives of transnational, regional, and national actors, as well as factors including class, gender, ethnicity, and geographic location. E-book Voices in the media [Risorsa elettronica] : performing French linguistic otherness / Gaëlle Planchenault. - London : Bloomsbury Publishing, 2015 (Advances in sociolinguistics) ISBN 978-1-4725-8803-6 Verbal performances are often encountered in the media where they are used to embody characters or social archetypes. Performed voices define the norm as well as the linguistic Others and by doing so circulate associated values and linguistic ideologies. This book explores the idea that, far from simply being exercises in verbal skill and flair, performances of social, ethnic or gendered voices in the media not only have the power to accomplish ideological work, they are also sites of linguistic tension and negotiation. Critically examining performances of French voices in the media, this book raises the following questions: - How are repertoires of voices constructed and subsequently perpetuated in the media? - How do the stereotypic personae these voices contribute to build become familiar to national as well as transnational audiences? - How do such performed voices reproduce hegemonic ideologies of standard and non-standard languages and participate in the perpetuation of social discriminations? - How are these performed voices commodified into cultural products of otherness that may later be reclaimed by stigmatized communities? Following an innovative framework which allows for analysis of performances of varied voices and their impact in the media sphere, Voices in the Media offers a new approach to the linguistics of media performance. E-book Longitudinal developments in vocabulary knowledge and lexical organization [Risorsa elettronica] / Brigitta Dóczi and Judit Kormos. - Oxford : Oxford University Press, 2015 ISBN 978-0-19-021028-1 Words are the building blocks of human communication and provide a strong foundation for the development of skilled language production and comprehension. Learning words in a language other than one's own requires long-term commitment and substantial engagement. This research monograph offers a summary of how learners of additional languages acquire vocabulary in instructed foreign language contexts and in English for Academic Purposes programs in the target language environment. After a thorough introduction of the most important constructs in the first chapter, the book provides a comprehensive description of the processes of longitudinal development in learners' growth of vocabulary size and depth of word knowledge. In the second half, the authors make novel connections between the fields of second language acquisition and vocabulary research. They then show how individual differences between learners can influence the processes and outcomes of vocabulary learning. E-book

Crosslinguistic influence in second language acquisition [Risorsa elettronica] / edited by Rosa Alonso Alonso. - Bristol : Multilingual matters, 2016 (Second language acquisition ; 95) ISBN 9781783094837 This volume provides an unprecedented insight into current approaches to crosslinguistic influence (CLI). The collection investigates a range of themes including linguistic relativity, the possible contributions of neurolinguistics, the problem of cognitive development and the role of the frequency of structures in acquisition from distinct, overlapping and complementary perspectives. Chapters focusing on vocabulary, morphosyntactic categories, semantic structures, and phonetic and phonological structures feature in the volume, as do over 20 languages, in order to offer new insights into both theoretical and empirical issues in CLI, including the consequences of great or little similarity in structures between languages. The relevance of CLI research for teaching is discussed in a number of chapters, as is the phenomenon of multilingualism. The collection will appeal to researchers, graduate and postgraduate students, teachers and professionals interested in the field of CLI in SLA. The sample of languages represented in these descriptive contributions covers most of the geographical areas and linguistic families in which ergativity has been known to exist jointly with well-developed morphological voice, and some languages belonging to families in which ergativity or voice were not previously recognized or adequately described up to now. 415 ERG VAL Evaluative morphology from a cross-linguistic perspective [Risorsa elettronica] / by Lívia Körtvélyessy. - Cambridge : Cambridge scholars publishing, 2015 ISBN 978-1-4438-7341-3 This book presents the results of the first interdisciplinary approach to evaluative morphology based on the intersection of evaluative morphology and areal typology, and provides the first large-scale typological research based on a sample of 200 different. Furthermore, it also represents the first work dealing with evaluative morphology as a feature of Standard Average European by comparing the SAE and world samples. Methodologically, it introduces the parameter of Evaluative Morphology Saturation, which identifies the richness of evaluative morphology in individual languages by reflecting the semantic, word-class and word-formation aspects of evaluative morphology. As such, this book provides a new and innovative approach to studying the semantics of evaluative morphology and evaluative-formation, represented by two cognitively founded models, a radial model of EM semantics and a model of evaluative formation. It is also the first contrastive psycholinguistic work that studies phonetic iconicity in evaluative morphology by way of experimental research into five different age groups of informants speaking three different languages. English as a contact language [Risorsa elettronica] / edited by Daniel Schreier, Marianne Hundt. - Cambridge : Cambridge University Press, 2013 (Studies in English language) ISBN 978-1-139-61182-4 Recent developments in contact linguistics suggest considerable overlap of branches such as historical linguistics, variationist sociolinguistics, pidgin/creole linguistics, language acquisition, etc. This book highlights the complexity of contact-induced language change throughout the history of English by bringing together cutting-edge research from these fields. Special focus is on recent debates surrounding substratal influence in earlier forms of English (particularly Celtic influence in Old English), on language shift processes (the formation of Irish and overseas varieties) but also on dialects in contact, the contact origins of Standard English, the notion of new epicentres in World English, the role of children and adults in language change as well as transfer and language learning. With contributions from leading experts, the book offers fresh and exciting perspectives for research and is at the same time an up-to-date overview of the state of the art in the respective fields. The acquisition of French in multilingual contexts [Risorsa elettronica] / edited by Pedro Guijarro-Fuentes, Katrin Schmitz and Natascha Müller. - Bristol : Multilingual matters, 2015 (Second language acquisition ; 94) ISBN 978-1-78309-453-0 This volume brings together new research from different theoretical paradigms addressing the acquisition of French as a second language. It focuses on the acquisition of French in combination with English, German, Russian or Spanish and enriches our understanding of the particularities of French and the role of language combinations in the acquisition process. The chapters examine the development of different grammatical aspects (word order phenomena, adjective placement, dislocation and cleft constructions, wh-questions, DP phenomena, argument admissions and constructions with particular word groups) and use various methodologies (such as elicitation tasks, longitudinal studies and parsing experiments) to further add to our understanding of how French is acquired in different contexts. This book will be a resource for researchers and graduate students working in the discipline of language acquisition, especially those who are interested in language contact phenomena where two typographically different languages are involved. Profiling discourse participants [Risorsa elettronica] : forms and functions in Spanish conversation and debates / Barbara De Cock. - Amsterdam ; Philadelphia : Benjamins, 2014 (Pragmatics & beyond. New series ; vol. 246) ISBN 978-90-272-7021-4 The construction of discourse is a challenging field where many discourse structures and interactional effects remain poorly understood. This analysis provides a systematic explanation for the way in which discourse participants (speaker and hearer) are construed in Spanish through a corpus-driven analysis of informal conversation, TV-debates and parliamentary debates. It deals not only with person deixis, but with the full range of possibilities speakers choose from when profiling their self or their relationship with the interlocutor. This analysis also offers new insights into the operationalization of the concepts of subjectivity and intersubjectivity as tools for the analysis of person reference and genre comparison. The comparative and corpus-driven approach offers methodological tools for genre analysis that can be transposed to other languages and/or genres. The detailed description of three socially highly relevant discourse types from a cognitive-functional perspective makes this book a useful resource not only for pragmatists but also for researchers in political and media discourse. Classical Greek syntax [Risorsa elettronica] : Wackernagel's law in Herodotus / David Goldstein. - Leiden ; Boston : Brill, 2015 (Brill's studies in Indo-European languages & linguistics ; vol. 16) ISBN 978-90-04-25068-0 In Classical Greek Syntax: Wackernagel's Law in Herodotus, David Goldstein offers the first theoretically-informed study of second-position clitics in Ancient Greek and challenges the long-standing belief that Greek word order is ?free” or beyond the reach of systematic analysis. On the basis of Herodotus’ Histories, he demonstrates that there are in fact systematic correspondences between clause structure and meaning. Crucial to this new model of the Greek clause is Wackernagel’s Law, the generalization that enclitics and postpositives occur in ?second position,” as these classes of words provide a stable anchor for analyzing sentence structure. The results of this work not only restore word order as an interpretive dimension of Greek texts, but also provide a framework for the investigation of other areas of syntax in Greek, as well as archaic Indo-European more broadly. A person's cultural characteristics can often lead to misunderstandings, influenced by language, non-verbal styles, codes of etiquette and assumptions. There may also be perceived misconceptions and differences in beliefs and values. In order to provide appropriate, sensitive and acceptable services for different cultural groups, all service providers need to take these factors into account. Written by leading clinicians and academics from around the world, and integrating both practical and theoretical knowledge, the Textbook of Cultural Psychiatry provides a framework for the provision of mental healthcare in a multi-cultural/ multi-racial society and global economy. It will be essential reading for those providing mental healthcare, or who are involved in the organisation and management of services. E-book

Voici une réflexion sur l'histoire de la coexistence entre les mots et la musique. 780.08 DEL MUS Manuscripts and medieval song [Risorsa elettronica] : inscription, performance, context / edited by Helen Deeming and Elizabeth Eva Leach. - Cambridge : Cambridge University Press, 2015 (Music in context) ISBN 978-1-316-24992-5 The manuscript sources of medieval song rarely fit the description of 'songbook' easily. Instead, they are very often mixed compilations that place songs alongside other diverse contents, and the songs themselves may be inscribed as texts alone or as verbal and musical notation. This book looks afresh at these manuscripts through ten case studies, representing key sources in Latin, French, German, and English from across Europe during the Middle Ages. Each chapter is authored by a leading expert and treats a case study in detail, including a listing of the manuscript's overall contents, a summary of its treatment in scholarship, and up-to-date bibliographical references. Drawing on recent scholarly methodologies, the contributors uncover what these books and the songs within them meant to their medieval audience and reveal a wealth of new information about the original contexts of songs both in performance and as committed to parchment. The Routledge companion to Commedia dell'Arte [Risorsa elettronica] / edited by Judith Chaffee, Oliver Crick. - London : Routledge, 2014 ISBN 978-1-315-75084-2 From Commedia dell'Arte came archetypal characters that are still with us today, such as Harlequin and Pantalone, and the rediscovered craft of writing comic dramas and masked theatre. From it came the forces that helped create and influence Opera, Ballet, Pantomime, Shakespeare, Moliere, Lopes de Vega, Goldoni, Meyerhold, and even the glove puppet, Mr Punch. The Routledge Companion to Commedia dell'Arte is a wide-ranging volume written by over 50 experts, that traces the history, characteristics, and development of this fascinating yet elusive theatre form. In synthesizing the elements of Commedia, this book introduces the history of the Sartori mask studio; presents a comparison between Gozzi and Goldoni's complicated and adversarial approaches to theatre; invites discussions on Commedia's relevance to Shakespeare, and illuminates re-interpretations of Commedia in modern times. The authors are drawn from actors, mask-makers, pedagogues, directors, trainers and academics, all of whom add unique insights into this most delightful of theatre styles. E-book

Letter writing and language change [Risorsa elettronica] / edited by Anita Auer, Daniel Schreier, Richard J. Watts. - Cambridge : Cambridge University Press, 2015 (Studies in English language) ISBN 978-1-316-00584-2 Letter Writing and Language Change outlines the historical sociolinguistic value of letter analysis, both in theory and practice. The chapters in this volume make use of insights from all three 'Waves of Variation Studies', and many of them, either implicitly or explicitly, look at specific aspects of the language of the letter writers in an effort to discover how those writers position themselves and how they attempt, consciously or unconsciously, to construct social identities. The letters are largely from people in the lower strata of social structure, either to addressees of the same social status or of a higher status. In this sense the question of the use of 'standard' and/or 'nonstandard' varieties of English is in the forefront of the contributors' interest. E-book Literature and music in the Atlantic world, 1767-1867 / Catherine Jones. - Edinburgh : Edinburgh University press, 2014 ix, 278 p. ; 24 cm. - (Edinburgh studies in transatlantic literatures) ISBN 978-0-7486-8461-8 Catherine Jones begins by examining the attitudes to music and its performance by leading figures of the American Enlightenment and Revolution, notably Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson. She also looks at the attempts of Francis Hopkinson and others to harness the Orphean power of music so that it should become a progressive force in the creation of a new society. She argues that the association of rhetoric and music that reaches back to classical Antiquity acquired new relevance and underwent new theorisation and practical application in the American Enlightenment in light of revolutionary Atlantic conditions. Jones goes on to consider changes in the relationship of rhetoric and music in the nationalising milieu of the nineteenth century; the connections of literature, music and music theory to changing models of subjectivity; and Romantic appropriations of Enlightenment visions of the public ethical function of music. 809.033 JON LIT

Turning points [Risorsa elettronica] : concepts and narratives of change in literature and other media / edited by Ansgar Nünning, Kai Marcel Sicks. - Berlin : De Gruyter, 2012 (Spectrum Literaturwissenschaft ; 33) ISBN 978-3-11-029710-2 At times of crisis and revolution such as ours, diagnoses of crucial junctures and ruptures - 'turning points' - in the continuous flow of history are more prevalent than ever. Analysing literary, cinematic and other narratives, the volume seeks to understand the meanings conveyed by different concepts of turning points, the alternative concepts to which they are opposed when used to explain historical change, and those contexts in which they are unmasked as false and over-simplifying constructions. E-book Values of literature [Risorsa elettronica] / edited by Hanna Meretoja ... [et al.]. - Leiden : Brill, 2015 (Philosophy, literature, and politics ; vol. 278) ISBN 978-94-012-1205-2 Why we read literature and why we should read literature are age-old questions that have, in recent years, gained unprecedented scope and intensity, against the backdrop of what has been perceived as a world-wide crisis in the humanities. While scholars frequently discuss different types of value separately, in this volume values of literature are approached in the plural: we argue that the ethical, aesthetic, cognitive, affective, social, historical, and existential values of literature should be explored in connection with each other. The three parts of the book explore the relationship between ethics and aesthetics; the cognitive, affective, and social values of literature; and the construction and questioning of literary values in society. Throughout the book, we discuss the different things literature can do – ranging from affirmation of social dogmas to its capacities for self-questioning and challenging of moral certainties – through the dynamic interplay of its ethical and aesthetic, cognitive and affective aspects. Literature not only reflects and draws on the values of the historical world from which it stems; it also actively addresses, challenges, and transforms those values and explores new ways to understand value. Through these complementary processes, literature engages in its own distinctively literary forms of value inquiry. E-book

Being cool [Risorsa elettronica] : the work of Elmore Leonard / Charles J. Rzepka. - Baltimore : Johns Hopkins University Press, 2013 ISBN 978-1-4214-1016-6 Widely known as the crime fiction writer whose work led to the movies Get Shorty and Out of Sight, Elmore Leonard had a special knack for creating "cool" characters. In Being Cool, Charles J. Rzepka looks at what makes the dope-dealers, bookies, grifters, financial advisors, talent agents, shady attorneys, hookers, models, and crooked cops of Leonard's world cool. They may be nefarious, but they are also confident, skilled, and composed and cope without effort or thought. And they are good at what they do. Taking being cool as the highway through Leonard's life and works, Rzepka finds plenty of byways to explore along the way. Rzepka delineates the stages and patterns that characterize Leonard's creative evolution. Like jazz greats, he forged an individual writing style immediately recognizable for its voice and rhythm, including his characters' rat-a-tat recitations, curt backhands, and ragged trains of thought E-book

Starting in 1314 and coming right up to the present day, poet and critic Robert Crawford examines how writers have set out in poetry, fiction, plays and on film the ideal of Scottish independence. Beginning with medieval commemorations of Bannockburn, this sweeping and ambitious book also includes the most detailed consideration of what independence meant to Robert Burns. Concentrating on Scottish writing, it considers, too, imaginative work by male and female authors from England to North America and Australia. This book is full of surprises: from the bestselling Romantic fiction from Surrey that nourished Braveheart to the subtle, Manhattan-born nationalist sparring partner of Hugh MacDiarmid. Bannockburns helps explain the intellectual formation of modern Scottish nationalism, and concludes with a detailed look at how contemporary Scottish authors have reacted in their writing to the arguments of Scotland's independence referendum. 828.991 109 CRAW BAN Frankenstein, ossia, Il Prometeo moderno / Mary Shelley ; traduzione di Chiara Zanolli e Laura Caretti ; con uno scritto di Muriel Spark. - Milano : Mondadori, c1982 XLVIII, 276 p. ; 19 cm. - (Oscar classici ; 307) ISBN 88-04-50845-0 823.7 SHE FRAN

- Torino : Einaudi, 2001 524 p. ; 21 cm. - (Biblioteca Einaudi ; 119) ISBN 978-88-06-16060-9 843.3 BAC OPE (1) 843.3 BAC OPE (2) Letteratura italiana Boiardo / Tiziano Zanato. - Roma : Salerno, 2015 410 p. ; 21 cm. - (Sestante ; 34) ISBN 978-88-8402-998-0 851.2 ZAN BOI Carducci / Francesco Benozzo. - Roma : Salerno, 2015 298 p. ; 21 cm. - (Sestante ; 33) ISBN 978-88-8402-997-3 851.8 BEN CAR

Dante intertestuale e interdisciplinare : saggi sulla Commedia / Christopher Kleinhenz. - Roma : Aracne, 2015 492 p. ; 24 cm. - Milano : La vita felice, 2014 109 p. ; 21 cm. - (Colloqui di poesia ; 9) ISBN 978-88-7799-674-9 B. 10. 0151
