NuPECC Survey of Nuclear Physics Activities and Resources in member states

First survey undertaken in 1997 and was intended as the first in a series which would “reveal trends within the subject and across different resourcing boundaries”

Report available on NuPECC website

At the meeting in Venice in March NuPECC agreed to begin a new survey

Today we need to agree: What should be included? How to gather the information?

The 1997 report contained three short sections covering:

RESEARCH AREAS

Charts showing what percentage of the personnel were engaged in the different subfields which were identified.

To meet the aim of monitoring trends, the new survey should follow as closely as possible the last one. However…..

Including MSc/Diploma students caused problems last time. The qualification can mean different things in different countries and some countries chose not to return this information.

Is it necessary to ask for this information?

The research areas used last time may not be appropriate given developments in the field since then

We need to discuss possible changes

The survey collected information on the total expenditure in each country (excluding salaries). However, this was not included in the report.

Should we request this information?

Last time the survey was carried out by sending a questionnaire to all institutions (university or laboratory) with active nuclear physics research.

A NuPECC member from each country was responsible for identifying all the relevant institutions in that country and also for scanning all the returns to check they were completed correctly.

It is suggested that we adopt this procedure again

The questionnaire may need modification

Is there anything else we want to ask which may help clarify issues which NuPECC is interested in?

Age groups for tenured staff – are there a lot of retirements due?

Any other?
