REFLECTIONS/NEXT STEPSName cards sent home with all children at the weekend; “…” unsure of dominant hand. Quite a few children, including “…,” have reverted to a palmar grip since the Christmas holidays. “…” given surnames to write, too. All ch also given letter formation sheet. We have done this because some children are still struggling to write the initial capital of their name on their paintings and models.

Jack and beanstalk small wooden characters, to act out the story.Role play winter house: will change to a bookshop next week. This will have categories of books, to complement the new categories in the book corner. Writing area: focused activity. Thinking about the characters in the story, imagining what they may say.Water: enhance with sieves and colanders, to enable the children to extract a variety of beans from the water. (Not a popular area last week when continuous provision; hopefully this will attract some children to come and play).Easel: painting flower stalks, printing flower middles with cotton reels, finger painting petals. Demonstrate in circle time.Maths area: label ‘more’ and ‘fewer.’ Later in the week: count how many items in each tub, and label with a numeral or with mark-making. Demo at circle time.Construction: building the beanstalk with straws: adult to guide play in this area.Workshop: colours and shapes of sorted beans in trays, with glue available to create pictures and patternsIWB: 2Paint (to draw beanstalk). events and principal characters.

setting.Beginning to be able to negotiate and solve problems without aggression, eg. When someone has taken their toy.

Circle time – activity

Prayers will be said, as an act of collective worship, before circle time each morning.

Shared reading. Tell the story of Jack and the Beanstalk using a big book. Highlight the terms ‘title’ ‘front cover’ and ‘author,’ explaining to the ch what these terms mean. Use the illustrations from the big book to re-tell the story together. Model how to gain information about what is happening on the page by looking at the illustration.

Key questions (whole class): How are mum/ Jack/ the giant feeling? (relate to ‘feelings’ puppets).

What is going to happen in the end? (What do you predict?)

Key questions (Cath

KR and CG to use puppets in the theatre, acting in role to show how to look after our friends. We will act out a situation where we need to share, and one where we will model inappropriate play (eg. rough and tumble play inside Nursery). Use the ‘feelings’ puppets so that selected children can demonstrate how the characters might be feeling. Ask ch to suggest how the puppets might be rewarded for their actions, eg. Green smiley face on board, smiley rocket …

Write dance: each child to have a ribbon streamer. Facilitate everyone to hold this in their dominant hand (focus “…”). To the sound of ‘Uptown Funk’ in split keyperson groups, model forming an ‘s’ shape. (This is the first letter shape that the bears have been learning in phonics). *Allow some time for dancing and free movement with the streamers first.

Ch to take turns to come to the board and overwrite an ‘s’ shape, drawn by the adult. Use lots of different coloured pens, so that we see a rainbow effect. Differentiate by asking “…” to draw the shape freehand.

Sing ‘1, 2, 3, Jesus loves me!’ (adapted from SingUp).

Read the short story of Jesus’ presentation in the temple. Remind ch that their parents may take them to church on Sundays, just like Mary and Joseph did with their son. (Differentiate by asking HAs to complete parts of the story, which they will have heard once before in Collective Worship).

Not all the children go to church regularly: emphasise that they can talk to Jesus anywhere, at any time.

Split into keyperson groups. KR to watch 2d shape video on Espresso with her group. We will pause the video after each shape is introduced to ask key questions: What is the name of the shape? What does it look like? Can you see one in the Nursery? How do you know it is a … (circle, triangle, etc).?

CG to use shape flashcards with her group, introducing some new vocabulary: rhombus, pentagon, hexagon, octagon.

with HAs):

Using success criteria and symbols: we will know we have listened to the story well if we can say who was in it, where it took place and what happened. Cath to stick children’s correct suggestions on wedge dry-wipe board. (use pictures)
