The Library provides access to EBSCO A-Z, an electronic resource access and management service. With this service, patrons can determine if the Library provides access to a specific journal and whether it is in electronic or print format.

The Nursing and Health Sciences collection contains approximately nine current print periodicals classified in the Library of Congress classification R-RT, along with supplemental titles in the Q, H and T classifications.

Access to citations and to some full-text electronic journal titles is available through various electronic databases. CINAHL Plus with Full Text indexes more than 4,900 titles, including approximately 360 in full text. EBSCO’s Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition contains over 500 full text titles. The Library also provides access to The Cochrane Library, which has six databases for evidence-based practice information, including the Database of Systematic Reviews, widely used by clinicians. ProQuest Nursing provides access to over 715 full text titles and indexes more than 850 titles. Gale Nursing and Allied Health provides information from around 1,000 journals.

In addition, Wiley Online Library has 33 international nursing journals. Online access to another 20 nursing journals is available via OVID Nursing Full Text Plus. Other databases which cover relevant subjects are Academic Search Premier and Biological Sciences. Elsevier ScienceDirect also provides access to around 437 titles in Nursing and Health Sciences.

The most valuable aspect of electronic databases are links in the search results that allow users to go directly to full text articles, or to find them if they are in another database. Patrons are able to conduct searches in nursing and related subject areas using the Library’s Discovery service as well.

EBSCO A-Z may be browsed for journal subject headings. The table below lists approximate numbers of selected subjects

Nonprint Media AssessmentOutdated formats in the Audio-Visual collection have been withdrawn, and some DVDs and kits have been shelved in the circulating collection on the 9th floor of the Library.

Relevant streaming video is available through the VAST Academic Films Online and Films On Demand databases, and may be located using the JaxCat online catalog. Films On Demand provides access to 242 segments in Nursing, under the subject area of Health and Medicine. There are a total of 378 segments in this collection. The VAST Alexander Street Press: Nursing Education in Video Collection currently contains 317 titles.

Supplemental SupportHoldings in the related subject collections of general science, biology, and medicine provide additional support to the Nursing and Health Sciences Collection. Selected areas of psychology, law, and sociology also support the Nursing and Health Sciences curriculum. Detailed examination of these areas is provided in the Nursing and Health Sciences conspectus sheets.

Access to Electronic Resources (Defined Access)In addition to CINAHL, Cochrane, and the EBSCO health databases, the Elsevier ScienceDirect database includes journals in Nursing and Health Sciences, which encompasses Medicine and Pharmacology. Also, the Wiley Online Library database provides full-text access to nursing journals.

These databases are available via the Internet to students and faculty in the Library, on campus, or remotely off campus (to registered, authenticated users.) Further, the majority of the electronic journal titles are available through the Discovery service.

Limited full text Nursing and Health Sciences coverage is available through several of the Library’s general aggregator periodical databases; including Gale’s Academic OneFile and EBSCO’s Academic Search Premier.

Several Nursing-related subject guides are available via the Internet, and additional guides are created as needed. Currently, these are:

The Library’s collecting level was measured against Yankee Book Peddler’s New Titles Report. The average percentage of books added to the Library’s collection from 2009-10 to 2013-14 in Nursing is 43%. The rate for Nursing is above the guidelines of the recommended collecting level to maintain a 4-5 level collection, which is 26-30%, while the Library’s overall collection in Nursing and Health Sciences is rated a 3cP, or Advanced Study or Instructional Support Level. The remainder of the Medicine and Health Sciences collection, at 6%, falls within the guidelines for 2bP levels, or Basic Information Level, Advanced. Examination of the total holdings reveals that online journal access is sufficient to bring the collection up to an adequate level.

Strengths:The Nursing and Health Sciences collection is adequate to support the Master of Science in Nursing, and the STEP (RN-BSN and RN-BSN-MSN) programs, and the Graduate Certificate in Emergency Preparedness Nursing Coordinator. The collection is more than adequate to support the Bachelor of Science in Nursing. The College of Nursing (CON) synopsis of Library evaluations, with data compiled from student surveys, shows that holdings overall were “adequate for preparation of class assignments.” (See appendix 1 for more details.)

Weaknesses:Some updated material is needed in specific areas in the Nursing collection; RG525, Pregnancy and RJ245, Pediatric Nursing.

6

Page 7: Nursing and Health Sciences - Jacksonville State Web viewNursing and Health Sciences. Houston Cole Library. ... Advanced Study or Instructional Support Level, ... a Guide for Information

Recommendations:Continue weeding and acquire more updated material in the areas identified above where needed. Book orders should continue in subjects relevant to the Doctor of Science degree program in Emergency Management. The CON Library evaluation reveals one lower rating for the course Professional Practice and Care of the Aging Population. This area will be addressed by the acquisition of updated resources in relevant subjects.

B. PeriodicalsStrengths: The print periodical holdings of several specialized journals in the Library of Congress R classifications are adequate to support the Master of Science in Nursing and the STEP (RN-BSN and RN-BSN-MSN), as well as the Graduate Certificate in Emergency Preparedness Nursing Coordinator, and the MSN – Community Health with a Concentration in Emergency Management. The collection is more than adequate to support the Bachelor of Science in Nursing. These holdings are supplemented by access to a large number of current online periodicals.

Weaknesses:None noted.

Recommendations:Maintain our current subscriptions to online periodical databases that encompass Nursing related subject areas to keep access at current levels. As a number of Nursing programs, including the MSN and STEP (RN-BSN and RN-BSN-MSN) and Graduate Certificate in Emergency Preparedness Nursing Coordinator are delivered online, it is extremely important that distance-learning students have online access to current resources.

C. Nonprint mediaStrengths: Outdated formats, including films, filmstrips, and VHS tapes have been withdrawn. Nursing related streaming videos are available from the VAST Academic Films Online and Films On Demand databases, and may be located using the JaxCat online catalog.

Weaknesses:None noted.

Recommendations: Continue to acquire new material, in current formats, to replace dated films and reels.

D. Electronic Resources (Defined Access)Strengths:

7

Page 8: Nursing and Health Sciences - Jacksonville State Web viewNursing and Health Sciences. Houston Cole Library. ... Advanced Study or Instructional Support Level, ... a Guide for Information

A number of databases provide access to full text articles, citations and abstracts from thousands of periodicals, books, conference proceedings, etc. in Nursing and related fields. General subject databases provide access to many more periodicals.

Appropriate websites have been added to Nursing-related subject guides. Web sites that offer access to full-text articles, such as HighWire Press, PubMed Central, and other open access resources are also integrated into the Library’s catalog. However, it should be noted that there may be a delay (embargo) of six months to a year before full text is released. Subject specialist librarians also review websites for inclusion in relevant subject guides.

Weaknesses:None noted

Recommendations: Maintain current level of access to online resources, and increase when possible to meet students’ future needs.
