What is a Nursing Assistant?

• A nursing assistant (NA) is an educated professional, responsible for helping patients, residents, or clients with their activities of daily living.

• An NA performs job duties under the supervision of a licensed nurse (RN or LPN).

Olympic College Nursing Assistant Program

• 136 hours classroom and lab hours• 64 hours clinical practicum hours

• 7 hours WA state DOH KNOW HIV/AIDS Bloodborne Pathogens Prevention training

NA 115: Nursing Assistant Lab

• Medical terminology• Basic technical skills of infection control and vital signs• Safety and emergency care, including BLS for

Healthcare Providers (CPR)• Rehabilitation & surgical concerns• Basic technical skills (assisting with feeding & hydration,

oral care, elimination needs)• Basic restorative skills (ambulation, positioning,

NA 120: Nursing Assistant Practicum

• Apply knowledge and skills in the work setting• Final dates will vary depending on faculty and facility• Eight full 8 hour shifts for a total of 64 hours in

facility (may include day/evening/weekend shifts)– Bremerton: Kitsap or Pierce County – Shelton: Lewis or Mason County

• Two 8 hour shifts are back on campus in lab– Includes Employer Panel/Mock Interviews

• Final Skills Testing is arranged in pairs during finals week

Program completion next steps• Become a Nursing Assistant Registered (NAR)

– NAR credential is required to work– Eligible to apply second week of quarter– $85 fee to the Department of Health (DOH) – Must past state exam within four months of hire to remain employed

• Upon successful completion of the program:– DSHS/DOH Certification of Completion– Olympic College Certificate of Recognition ($10 to OC)– Take the state exam ($124 to Pearson Vue)– Become an Nursing Assistant Certified ($85 to Department of Health)– Receive factor point toward LPN program application at Olympic College

• Eligible to test out of PN 103 & PN 104 after certification
