Why You Eat?
• Hunger– A feeling of physical discomfort caused by
your body’s need for nutrients
• Appetite– A desire for food that is based on emotional &
other factors rather than nutritional need
• Basal Metabolic Rate– The Rate at which you use energy when your
body is at rest
Evaluating Food Choices
• FDA requires that food labels list specific nutrition facts about food
• FDA sets Standards about nutrient & health claims that can be printed on food labels
• Daily Values are listed on labels• Labels include: open dates: sell by, best if
used by & do not use after dates.
What Weight is Right For You?
• Depends on a variety of Factors:
– Family History/ Natural Tendency
– Individual Activity Level
– Body Composition: body fat as compared to muscle & bone. Affected by Sex & Age
Body Mass Index
• Ratio of Your Weight to Your Height
• Can be Calculated using a Standard BMI Chart
• Other factors including body type can impact results
Overweight & Obesity
• Overweight: a person who is heavier than the standard for their height as is determined by the BMI chart
• Obesity: Adults who have a BMI of 30 or higher
• Many Health risks are associated with being Overweight/Obese– High BP, Diabetes, Heart Disease, High Cholesterol,
Stroke, Certain Cancers
Underweight
• Underweight: A person who is lighter than the standard for their height as is determined by the BMI chart.
• Health Problems Linked to being Underweight Include:– Anemia, Heart Irregularities, Trouble Regulating
Body Temperature, Amenorrhea in women
Tips for Healthy Weight Management:
• Avoid Dangerous Diet Plans, Fad Diets, Fasting, or any other Unsafe Ways to loose Weight
• Eat Nutritionally Balanced Meals & Snacks
• Get Regular Exercise
• Get the Recommended Amount of Sleep
