Opening Sale of Sheep with Lambs at Foot

Lancaster - Monday 29th February

The opening sale of spring breeding sheep at Lancaster had an entry of 20 families forward a smaller entry then expected but

as happens at this time of year and lambing season unfortunately a couple of vendors couldn’t come. An entry consisting

mainly of aged mule ewes with young Texel lambs topped at £168 with twins and £122 with singles. Plenty of buyers in attend-

ance looking for sheep but slightly cautious and weighing up the market.

The opening sale of sheep with lambs at foot saw many buyers leave without making purchases, at a sale where more could have been sold. All older sheep forward today, which saw Continental ewes with twins achieve a top price of £138 with others £126. Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 26th February

The weekly Store Cattle sale saw a stronger trade throughout for all types of cattle then the previous week. As per usual strong cattle contin-ue to be in strong demand and well sold at Lancaster but an ever strengthening market for young cattle selling well beyond vendor’s expec-tations. A consignment of continental steers from H Chapman & Son of Millbeck selling to £1,340 and others over £1,300. Heifer topped at £1,270 from C Hayhurst of Chipping with a Charolais.

A good show of Cast Cows forward sold to a continued strong trade as over previous weeks with leaner steaking cows selling to a stronger trade. Cast cow vendors are strongly advised to continue forwarding cast cows while trade remains strong. Another good number of cast forward with 129 going through the ring. OTM heifers sold to a top of 151.5ppk from JS & KM Wilson and Son of High House with a Friesian with plenty of other OTM heifers selling between 140ppk and 150ppk. Well fleshed cows sold into the one hundred and twenties pence per kilogram.

The monthly Stirk sale saw a nice entry of 62 on the catalogue of which 54 were forward. A busy ringside of local and travelled buyers, en-sured all classes sold to their full value. Topping the sale was a cracking 9month Simmental Bullock from J Knipe, Lambrigg which realised £710, also from the same home a 7month Charolais Bullock sold to £700. Native bred stirks sold to £680 and £640 for Herefords from E Lund & Son, Ingleton, selling to Messers Dowson, Whitby. Dairy bred British Blues sold to a top of £590 for Bulls from James Lund, Ingleton. Black and White stirks sold to a top of £265 for a trio from AJ Coates, Calder Vale. Best sorts in excess of £240 with another trio from Kelsall & Wood, Quernmore realising £250 at 5months, with an overall average of £208.

Young Calves sold to a flying trade, a Blue Bull from J & G Thornley, Kirkham took the top spot at £375. Angus Bulls sold to the fast trade of

the day, topping at £300 twice, from Messers Wannop, Heaton. A mixed entry of Black and White calves forward sold to a top of £80 from

TD & V Whitaker, Winmarleigh.

The weekly sale of Prime Hoggs had another good entry of over 700 forward, with over 1000 more prime hoggs sold this year in comparison to the same time as last year. An overall market average sold to 176ppk with hoggs between 39kg and 45kg averaging 182ppk. Well fleshed continental, Suffolk and mule hoggs weighing mid-forties very good to sell today to an active ring of buyers all keen to purchase hoggs.

Lakes Hospitality Trade Show

On Wednesday 24th & Thursday 25th February J36 Rural Auction Centre played host to the 41st Lakes Hospitality Trade Show where over 120 exhibi-

tors descended onto J36.

A marquee was erected in the car park and over 1000 visitors came to the two day event to meet with potential new suppliers for their businesses.

The event was a huge success and will be returning to J36 in 2017.

We would like to thank our customers for your patience whilst the event was ongoing and during the set up.

Prime Hoggs sold to a market average of 179p/kg, with well-finished hoggs regularly 195p/kg – 210p/kg topping at 244p/kg for best Beltex x hoggs from Fishwick Farms, Silverdale. Mules sold to 186p/kg, with pure hill hoggs 192p/kg for Cheviots and 182p/kg for Herd-wicks.

A top price of £117 was achieved for heavy Texels, with other heavy pens £95 - £102 however super heavyweights achieving no more. Standards sold to £92 with others regularly £77 - £84. Light weight hoggs £55 - £62, for first cross hoggs with pure hill breeds £44 - £53. Under finished and poorer sorts harder to sell.

A strong trade for all types of cast ewes and rams throughout. The trade topped at £116 for a Texel x tup from Martin Fishwick of Bank House Farm. Continental and Suffolk ewes saw better ewes easily selling into the nineties, topping at £99 for a Suffolk from M & RW Stirzaker of Milnthorpe, with plenty of first cross ewes selling into the eighties. Bigger Mule ewes sold to into the eighties, with plenty of pens of strong ewes easily selling in the mid seventies. All Mules forward averaging £71.51. Horned ewes keenly bid for with Lonk ewes selling to £80 from GJ Ibbetson of Higher Salter. Swaledale and Rough Fell ewes topping at £70, with other horned ewes selling in the sixities. Once again vendors left very pleased with their trade.

More cast sheep could have easily been sold to vendors advantage and more needed week on week.
