The pre-sale show was judge by Alex Walton of Fox Lane Ends who placed lot 25, Pennine Poppy 1169, from Drinkall Bros as Champion with Lot 5, Alandrew Smokin Jayne, from G & AE Smith, in Reserve. The champion, 13days calved and giving 33.4litres later realised £1980. The reserve champion, calved 11days and giving 30litres, achieved the top price of the day of £2150. Four heifers broke the £2000 barrier, including both of David Knowles of Cragg Farm’s heifers achieving £2020. Cows sold well, with a second calver from WJ & I France, Chipping realising £1500. A ringside of 16 buyers saw only 11 being able to secure purchases. The June dairy sale saw an entry of 29 heifers and cows

forward. The pre-sale show was judge by Alex Walton of Fox Lane Ends who placed lot 25, Pennine Poppy 1169,

from Drinkall Bros as Champion with Lot 5, Alandrew Smokin Jayne, from G & AE Smith, in Reserve.

The champion, 13days calved and giving 33.4litres later realised £1980. The reserve champion, calved 11days and

giving 30litres, achieved the top price of the day of £2150. Four heifers broke the £2000 barrier, including both of

David Knowles of Cragg Farm’s heifers achieving £2020.

Cows sold well, with a second calver from WJ & I France, Chipping realising £1500.

A ringside of 16 buyers saw only 11 being able to secure

purchases. With no signs of improvements in milk prices of the coming months, buyers are still hesitant when

purchasing replacements, however the best heifers remain a strong trade, plainer sorts or heifers lacking milk are

harder to place.

An overall average of £1480 for all heifers

including pedigree and non-pedigrees.

SOUTH SHEEP 2015 North West Auc ons travelled to the NSA South West Sheep event at EW Quick & Sons of North Tawton,

Devon on Tuesday 16th June 2015. A busy day was had and it was good to see many old and new faces at

the event. Despite the current prime sheep trade, there was plenty of op mism about the sheep industry

with many farmers in the area considering travelling north to purchase replacement breeding stock.

Exis ng customers were feeding back good reports of the stock that they had purchased last autumn from

Lancaster and J36 Rural Auc on Centre.

Another strong trade throughout, with all vendors leaving with a smile on their faces. British blue steers sold to a top of £1370 from JM & AG Swarbrick of Bensons Farm. Heifers sold to a top price of £1280 from ME & J Swarbrick of Bridge Farm. Native bred cattle were in short supply today with many buyers needing more to fulfil their requirements saw Angus steers from DW & NM Alderson of High Green sell to £1180. Young grazing cattle continue to be a good trade for both beef and dairy bred cattle.

Top price of the day was 214ppk for a pen of 40kg Texels from J Lamb, Old Glasson. Quality lambs were best to sell, with plainer sorts harder to place, pulling the average back slightly. A shortage of heavy weight lambs led to a better trade for these, with 50kg lamb from GR & RA Surtees realising £103. Light weight lambs 32-34kg easily in excess of £2/kg. Six 32kg Texels from W Pinder Jnr, realised 213ppk or £68/head.

STORE CATTLESTORE CATTLESTORE CATTLESTORE CATTLE The fortnightly sale of Store Cattle saw a top price of £1000 achieved twice, firstly for a Lim x steer from DJ & JM Hoggarth, followed by a Lim x heifer from GM Redmayne Buyers ringside for all classes of cattle, with yearling suckler bred steers and heifers easily sold, with native breeds selling to £895 for Hereford x steers from JA Knipe. Heifers generally £800-£900, with best Lim x yearlings £955, 10mo Char x £845 and 6mo Lim x £770. Young bulls sold to £785 for a Hereford x from J L Bird. Store cattle sales are held every fortnight at NWAJ36, with buyers keen to attend. We urge vendors to take advantage of the current strong demand. - Next sale, Thursday 25th June.

Compliments must go to the vendors of the quality of the calves at J36. As always, with the time and effort paying dividends with a strong trade from start to finish. A ring full of buyers looking to buy all types of calves ensured that vendors went away pleased, as plenty more could have easily been sold to vendors advantage. Beef calves in strong demand with British Blue heifers hitting a record height of £480 at J36 from regular vendor Bill Sharpe of Flodder Hall at two months old, who also sold bulls to £470. Closely following this, was R Morris-Eytons & Son of Beckside selling British blue bulls to £460, with one month old Blue bulls selling to £450 twice from DJ & S Stainton and John Handley as all Britsh blue bulls sold to an average of £440 and heifers averaged £417 with many buyers around the ring for heifers with cow making potential. Black and white calves were eagerly sought after and sold to a top of £185 twice from R Morris-Eytons & Son of Beckside and MH & AR Robinson of Homescales, with other best sorts easily selling £140 plus with middle types £100 plus with young rearers selling £50 plus. A small selection of stirks, in keeping with recent trade topping at £840 for a suckler bred five month old British blue from FN Wilson & Partners of Low House Farm. Angus steers sold to £580 with heifers selling to £530 from RH Redmayne of Windermere.

Ian Mcgrath an industry expert on TB will be speaking at the mee3ngs to discuss what measures farmers can take to minimise the risks of experiencing TB on their farm, and what we can expect the authori3es to do. Ian has experienced the effects of bTB on his own farm in Cheshire, and is member of Defra’s TB Eradica on Group. APHA will be represented at the mee ng to offer informa on and answer ques ons.

The sessions will also offer a chance to consider the forthcoming Defra consulta�on on post-movement tes�ng.
