COLLECTING USED PAPERBACK BOOKS

For the month of April, we collected 22 paperback books for our "Keep Them Reading " project. The Library was very pleased as well as impressed with our support. We will resume collecting books again in the Fall. You are always welcome to drop them at my condo. There is a receiving room just inside the front door. An easy way to remember is to put the books in a bag in the car. This also works for magazines. Thanks so much for your support and remember not only are you supporting the Library but the community as well Jan Alberts

New Community Project: Little Hats, Big Hearts

Can you knit or crochet? We are excited to promote a new heartwarming community project for 2016-2017. It is called “Little Hats, Big Hearts.” Volunteers will be celebrating American Heart Month by knitting or crocheting RED baby hats for all newborn and premature babies born in February in local hospitals. It is to raise awareness of heart disease and congenital heart defects. Debby Hass has been kind enough to chair this project. There will be one organizational meeting to get instructions and patterns. One large skein of RED yarn, will make a dozen hats. The hats for February 2017 distribution must be completed by December 1, 2016. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to donate 100 or more RED caps from the Northbrook Woman’s Club? This is a perfect project for members who want a project they can do on their own schedule or would like to more than one project. If you are interested, please sign up on sign up genius. Thank you, Patti Satz and Jeanne Voigt Community Projects Chairs

Scholarships

The Scholarship Committee is pleased to announce that we had a record amount of students applying for scholarships this year – 236! Our committee is also very excited to share that – for the first time ever – we are able to read the applications on our computers so we are saving paper, reading at our own pace and time, and making sure we really can get to know each candidate without the pressure of reading paper applications in a time crunch. We will be meeting at Kathy's house to pick the candidates on May 4th. At that time we will decide how many students get scholarships and in what amount.

Our budget this year is $25,000...for a pool of 236 students! We have our work cut out for us! Thank you to our committee: Amy Cooke, Elisa Glass, Lynn Hellwig, Jean Imperato, Mary Knipp, Lisa Kunkel, Lori Meek, Adrienne Miller and Kay Slawin Kathy Paleczny NWC Scholarship Committee Chair 2016

ADOPT-A-HIGHWAY The "Trash Tootsies" did a wonderful job cleaning up Waukegan Road between Shermer and Techny.
