Principal’s Report

Remembrance Day Service

A thought-provoking and moving service was held last week to commemorate the signing of the Armistice and peace after World War I. I was so proud of our students in the way they presented themselves and represented their community during this service. Students presented readings, performed as part of the school choir, band and pipe band. Other students attended a service at the RSL Lifecare William Beech Gardens aged care facility. It is a testament to their sense of responsibility, community engagement and the guidance offered by staff.

Teaching and Learning

One of the great things about being a teacher is being able to develop a love and appreciation of life-long learning. At Condobolin High School, learning and teaching is what we do.

It is what we are about. I am enjoying getting around the school and seeing ample evidence of this in our students and staff. Students and staff achieving success and valuing learning…it’s what we do.

Sport

Sport is a compulsory part of students’ curriculum in NSW public schools. Its benefits are well documented and range from health and wellbeing to social and personal development. Please encourage your child to participate in sport each week at school and resist the temptation of agreeing to their pleas to be “signed out”. A missed hour of learning time and social/exercise time each week is detrimental to your child’s overall wellbeing.

Positive Learning Focus: allow others to learn

Our positive learning focus has been vital to students being able to achieve success - Allow others to learn is central to our focus as a school. Every student’s learning is important at Condobolin High School.

White Ribbon Day

I would like to thank Western Plains Regional Development for organising a White Ribbon Day event in Renown Park on Friday 23 November 2pm start - to raise awareness about domestic violence in all of our communities. It is important to note that the White Ribbon motto is: “Men Working to End Men's Violence against Women” If parents/carers and students would like to support this very worthwhile event, please use the normal procedures to sign out of school on this day. We will be running a number of activities at school during the week in support of raising awareness of these important issues.

Condobolin High School - Counsellor Everyone needs someone to talk to when struggling to make sense of difficulties we face in life. Students may self-refer to our school counsellor if they need assistance and advice or they can see their Year Adviser, teacher or other adult to arrange an appointment. Our counsellor, Ms Mikaila Tasker, is currently on site every Thursday and every second Tuesday afternoon. These times may vary, so check in with the front office staff for availability. Parents and carers may also request time for the counsellor to see their child.

Digital footprint

Thanks to Senior Constable Jane Heffernan for her talk to all students on cyber bullying, the law and the digital footprints we leave behind. She was able to clear up a number of issues to ensure all students have a greater understanding of how to avoid unnecessary risks when living in a digital world.

Keeping it green Thanks to Simon Carey for his work in creating a usable space for our students and staff at the front of the school - the flood prone area has been transformed and is now looking enticing to assist minds to be creative and critical.

Thanks too, to Beau and Shane from A1 Tree Service who donated mulch to our school for our front gardens. A brilliant opportunity for us to continue to make our place of learning inspiring and provide opportunities for students to create visually splendid environments.

Library Survey Results The findings of the library survey are in. Here is a summary of the results:

People who responded to the survey liked the resources and services provided by, and in, the library, including access to computers and printers and help with assessments and schoolwork. They also liked the environment or atmosphere, with comments like “feel I am welcome” and it’s a “good place to chill”. The survey has provided many, many, ideas for new or improved resources and services and over a fifth of the suggestions relate to technology – additions and upgrades to existing equipment.

Furniture, furnishings and colours were major considerations for respondents. The vast majority liked the new comfortable furniture, and this was also top of the list for improvements to the library, while nearly half requested bright colours for furnishings and walls.

Space and spaces was an important factor; over 80% of people who responded to the renovation question

wanted a larger library overall. Over a third of survey respondents want to see changes to spaces within the library, including more small spaces for study and relaxation as well as open spaces to alleviate the “crowded” feel.

Responses to the question about lunchtime or after school activities were many and varied, and they included both recreational and learning activities. Crafts, games, competitions, clubs, study skills, and learning to use and using ICT as well as music and art activities were among the suggestions.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to respond. These thoughts and suggestions will definitely help in planning the upgrade of our library.

Ms Linda McHugh

On the 21st of September and the 26th of October, all of Year 9 participated in Peer Support training. The purpose was for these students to develop leadership skills, as well as recognise and develop the skills and capabilities they already had.

Groups participated in a number of activities that required them to work as a team, such as keeping a balloon in the air without using their hands, crafting costumes using just newspaper and sticky tape, and developing a secret code to get a three-digit number from one end of a line to another. Students also worked on problem solving skills and responding to pressure, such as when they were given just two items and had to develop a Peer Support activity appropriate for Year 7 students using those items. Following the training, 11 students were selected based on observations of students’ participation and attitude over the two days, for 2019.

The following students were the successful applicants: Peyton Bevill Aiden Harland Darcy Hope Brittany Jones Caitlin Keen Leo Mansur Harrison May Shaylee Saunders Molly Stubberfield Hayley-Grace Whiley Chontelle Dargin These Peer Support Leaders will work closely with the Year 7 group next year, facilitating sessions that support students’ communication and social skills.

Stewart House Study Trip - Connecting Country to the City

The trip to Sydney began with Mrs Chambers driving us from Condobolin to meet the bus in Parkes.

Our first challenge was negotiating a large herd of cattle blocking our way – we won, and arrived early.

The second was remembering all the names of the new friends we were making. They were 8 to 14 years old and came from all over the Western district.

When we arrived in Sydney, we met even more students from the outer Sydney region. Next, room allocations then it was time for Chicken Schnitzels in the dining room.

We soon discovered our third challenge - be positive about climbing 170 steps several times a day.

On our first day, classes were organised and each group took turns to go on excursions around Sydney.

The excursions included Ten Pin Bowling, Taronga Zoo, Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre and the Powerhouse Museum. It felt like we crossed over the

Harbour Bridge a thousand times.

In class, we learnt about the brain and strategies to manage stress with school, sport and work.

On the weekend, we went to the pool at Ryde and travelled on the Manly Ferry. As we crossed the Harbour, we saw skywriting - a marriage proposal in the sky. We hope Tia said ‘Yes’

Back in class, we made awesome tie dyed shirts and learnt the importance of teamwork as our next challenge was to cater for 86 people.

We starred in a talent quest – that was challenging too – (Billie sang and Clifton danced).

Coming home was the last challenge. We missed home but had to say goodbye to our new friends.

It was an amazing experience.

Thank you to everyone who made our trip happen.

Billie and Clifton.

Students have consolidated their understanding of data and representing the information into a variety of graphs. We have discussed the benefits of applying these skills in real life business situations.

During science lessons, we have explored the Solar System including depth studies of both Solar and Lunar Eclipse.

Year 7 students are developing new skills in Metal and Wood as they design and complete projects.

The class has celebrated better than expected results with the striped beetroot. They are huge which has demonstrated soil preparation and care results in healthy crops.

Taya has started work on her sewing project and is mastering new skills with the sewing machine.

Literacy

The novel Nanberry-Black Brother White, by author Jackie French, has engaged us all as we learn about our history from a variety of viewpoints. We have linked culture, language and environmental issues between Wiradjuri and Cadigal.

The students were concerned when we measured representations of 2-year-old salted meat, flour with weevils and rancid butter. These were rations given to men, women and children each week. Comments such as ‘I’d starve’ and ‘I’m glad we have supermarkets’ were whispered. Although bravely tasted, even the peas pudding, made from mashed yellow beans, could not change their minds.

Year 11 students studying Agriculture via LAP and Condobolin High School Primary Industries students recently visited Dubbo to learn about Lamb. Students completing year 11 Agriculture are studying Lamb as part of their Farm Product Study and are learning about the management, production, processing, value adding and overall supply chain. Students visited Outback Lamb and Drovers Choice Saltbush Lamb who are differentiating themselves and marketing their lamb uniquely. We also visited Fletchers abattoirs to see how lamb is processed and exported, the vinegar smell of the skins is something to

experience. Next time we will eat lunch before going to the abattoir! We also visited Apiam genetics to learn about reproductive technologies and unusual job opportunities. The students had a great time, with Meg showing us her bowling talents, Colby performing the job of a Navman and everyone getting their McDonalds fix. Thanks Mr Apps and Mrs Earney.

Year 12-2018

Some of our students have already received their Early Entry into University and some have already undertaken interviews to achieve placements in areas they are extremely passionate about. A number of our students received offers to CSU and other universities last week.

Madi Sinderberry received early entry into Physiotherapy at CSU-Orange and also at Western Sydney whilst also winning Young Riders at the same time.

Madison Jolliffe had already received early entry in Notre Dame university, but also received early entry into Communications at CSU- Bathurst. As mentioned in a previous newsletter, Madison is in the final interview process for the defence forces along with Myles Taylor and Broke Harland.

Myles along with Angus Porter also received offers at CSU.

A number of students are interested in courses that do not offer Early Entry and must wait until late December or until January to receive their university offer.

Denis Spathis has been chosen for the Parramatta NRL Development Squad, a lifelong ambition of his.

Another two girls that have had lifelong passions in certain fields and are achieving these dreams, are Bianca Levy who is working in the agricultural field

and Charlie Jane Hocking who is in the process of interviews in the Child Care Industry.

Shannon Reid also recently started working at the Condobolin Post Office, behind the front counter. Congratulations to all of Year 12.

Hospitality Essentials

Last week, some Year 12s from 2018 undertook the Hospitality Essentials course run by TAFE. This course included the Barista course, Hygiene, RSA and RCG for free except for the $110 that is required by the Alcohol and Gaming Board for the RSA and RCG. This is a fantastic qualification to have as these students can gain employment in any hospitality field, serving alcohol and also serving coffee. The students also learnt how to make milk shakes and non-alcoholic

Careers continued

On Tuesday 20 November Year 10 was involved in a Careers Day. The aim of the day was to prepare students for Year 11 and also give them the skills for the transition from school to the workforce or tertiary education. The students were given a presentation by Western Student Connections from Dubbo about the interview process and how best to approach a job interview. The presenters then spent the day interviewing students in groups of three or four, simulating interview questions for a real job. This is great preparation for students when they undertake an interview for a job. Year 10 students also completed their mandatory All Your Own Work, needed to transition into Year 11. This looked at plagiarism, copyright and scholarship practices, needed t for use in assessment in Year 11 and 12. Students had to complete 5 modules and 5 online tests to obtain their All Your Own Work. Fortunately we also had the University of Canberra visit while we were having our Career Day. The University talked to students about aspirations, goals and university life. Gail Heinrich, a former teacher at

Condobolin High, and now employed by the University of Canberra’ also did a session with Year 11 on study and research skills. The students then walked to the RSL where they were served a yummy lunch of steak or schnitzel and also dessert. After lunch, the students visited the gym where they were given a talk by Brayden and Jo Skinner on fitness, food and job skills. The students were organised into groups and totally enjoyed the presentation.

During the day, Year 10 students were given their paperwork for work experience next week. Thank you to Fiona Doyle for organising the work experience. Also a massive thank you to Western Student Connections, University of Canberra and Brayden Davis and Jo Skinner for making the day so successful.
