WESTERN NEW YORK AT PORTLAND THORNS FCWEDNESDAY, MAY 21, 2014

CATEGORICAL WON-LOST-TIED HEAD COACH PAUL RILEYPaul Riley was named the club’s head coach for the 2014 National Women’s Soccer League season on Dec. 10, 2013. Riley, 50, has compiled a lengthy head coaching career at the youth, collegiate and professional levels.

Previously serving as head coach of the Philadelphia Independence in Women’s Professional Soccer, Riley helped build the club into one of the best teams in the league reaching the WPS Championship match in each of the team’s two seasons. A two-time WPS Coach of the Year selection (2010, 2011), Riley compiled a 21-14-7 regular-season record in two seasons at the helm in Philadelphia, including a mark of 11-4-3 during the 2011 season.

Having coached at every level, Riley began his women’s coaching career with the Long Island Fury of the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL) in 2005, leading the club to a national championship in its inaugural 2006 season and a second title in 2009. Riley was named WPSL Coach of the Year in 2009 and, most recently, coached the team during their 2013 WPSL campaign. With the advent of WPSL Elite in 2012, Riley took charge of the New York Fury, helping guide the club to the semifinal round of the playoffs.

A native of Liverpool, England, Riley has served as a youth coach and director of coaching for Long Island-based Albertson Soccer Club since 1994, helping build one of the most well-known youth devel-opment clubs in the Northeast.

Prior to coaching women’s soccer, Riley began his professional coaching career as head coach of the Long Island Rough Riders from 1998-2003, earning USL A-League Coach of the Year honors in 1999 and guiding the Rough Riders to the USL D3 Pro League championship in 2002.

At the collegiate level, Riley served as head coach of the LIU Post men’s soccer team from 1990-97, registering an 88-49-13 overall record and garnering New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (now East Coast Conference) Coach of the Year recognition five times (1990, 1991, 1993, 1994, 1997).

As a player, Riley spent a 10-year professional career in the Northeast with the Albany Capitals (1988), New Jersey Eagles (1989-92) and Long Island Rough Riders (1994-98).

A midfielder at Adelphi University from 1982-85, Riley holds the program’s all-time career record in assists (43). In his senior season in 1985, Riley recorded 47 points (15g, 17a) and helped lead the Panthers to a No. 24 national ranking. Third on the all-time list in career points (121), Riley was named to the Adelphi Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999.

Riley graduated from Adelphi in 1986 with a degree in journalism and English. He earned a master’s degree in marketing and advertising from LIU Post in 1989. Riley and his wife, Tracy, reside in Long Island, N.Y.

THORNS FC SHUT OUT HOUSTON DASHGoalkeeper Nadine Angerer made a season-high seven saves, including a key stop on a second-half penalty kick, and forward Jessica McDonald netted the game-winning goal for Portland Thorns FC in a 1-0 victory over National Women’s Soccer League expansion side Houston Dash in front of 3,931 fans at BBVA Compass Stadium on May 14.

Thorns FC earned their second clean sheet of the season as Angerer came up with a crucial diving save on a 48th-minute penalty kick by Houston midfielder Kaylyn Kyle. Following a long cross into the penalty box, Portland was whistled for a handball, setting up the spot kick for the Dash. Leap-ing to her right, Angerer smothered the effort and quickly recovered into a position to help guide the rebound out for a goal kick as Thorns FC extended their club-record, road-unbeaten streak to eight consecutive matches in all competitions dating back to the 2013 season.

Registering her team-leading fourth goal of the season, McDonald delivered the game-winning goal from close range in the 57th minute, connecting on a well-placed cross from midfielder Angie Kerr. The goal was McDonald’s fourth in the last four matches and set a new NWSL-career high for the forward.

McDonald finished with a game-high six shots, including three on goal, while strike partner Chris-tine Sinclair delivered four shots, including a near miss in the 12th minute from 12-yards out that she pulled just wide of the far left post following a pass from McDonald near the end line. Portland, finished with a 13-9 advantage in shots while earning a second straight shutout against the Dash.

SCOUTING THE FLASHWestern New York enters Wednesday’s match following a 3-2 loss against the Washington Spirit on Saturday at Maureen Hendricks Field at Maryland Soccer-Plex. Despite taking a 2-1 lead into halftime on goals by forward Abby Wambach and midfielder Carli Lloyd, the Flash conceded twice in the final 45 minutes as Flash defender Kat Williamson scored an unfortunate own goal in the 71st minute as a shot struck the crossbar and bounced in off the defender. Washing-ton grabbed the game-winning goal in the 78th minute as forward Jodie Taylor scored her second goal of the match, finishing a headed cross from midfielder Yael Averbuch.

Head coach Aaran Lines’ squad is led by Wambach’s three goals in three appear-ances, while midfielder Vicky Losada has registered two goals and three assists in five games. Rookie goalkeeper Kelsey Wys has started each of the last two matches, filling in for goalkeeper Lydia Williams, who is on international duty with the Australia Women’s National Team at the 2014 AFC Women’s Asian Cup. Forward Samantha Kerr is also part of Australia’s roster for the tournament.
