Welcome to the wonderful world of NYOS and to our new-look season diary! In it we aim to bring you bang up to date with all that has happened recently to our musicians and ensembles and also to let you know what is in store for them during the coming months.

All our orchestras have been performing with great distinction recently; NYOS with a very colourful programme at Christmas, Futures giving two remarkable performances of music by George Benjamin, Camerata

Scotland performing to great acclaim and NCOS and NYJOS joining forces to present “Music from the Americas” in highly successful concerts in Perth and Glasgow: a very big “thank you” to all

our guest soloists and conductors who have given so much to our young musicians.

One of our biggest successes in recent months was the launch of our latest jazz ensemble, NYJOS Access. This ensemble allows our younger jazz musicians to have a performing profile and brings our jazz ensembles in to line with our classical work. Their fantastically successful debut was given in March at Paisley Grammar School: see pages 18 - 19 for more details!

As you will know, we are starting our 30th Anniversary celebrations and this summer will see the first stage of the party when The National Youth Orchestra of Scotland and Camerata Scotland undertake substantial overseas tours. NYOS will visit Poland and The Netherlands after first performing in Aberdeen and at The Sage Gateshead. Camerata Scotland will visit Etretat in northern France and move south for three performances in Spain before heading back to St-Andrews-in-the-Square in Glasgow: be sure to be at this final concert on 28th August to welcome them home! The visit to Spain includes an invitation to appear at the prestigious international festival at El Vendrell, the birthplace of Pablo Casals.

The National Children’s Orchestra of Scotland will for the first time this year give a public concert as the finale of their summer course when they perform at The Queen’s Hall in Edinburgh. We hope that this will develop further and become a regular feature of their summer programme. The National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland will welcome internationally renowned guitarist Mike Walker to join them for their four-concert tour during July.

Whatever your musical tastes I am sure that you will find something here to excite you so come along and support the wonderful talent of Scotland’s young musicians!

blowing our own trumpet...Over the last six months, NYOS’s ensembles have provided music tuition for over 500 young Scottish musicians. We have held 37 days of auditions around Scotland and the UK, giving vital auditioning experience to almost 1000 performers.

Between November ’08 and April ’09, 15 days of rehearsals and 20 course days have helped to prepare our musicians to perform 31 different pieces of music to over 3000 people in 14 large scale and intimate concerts.

In addition to all this, NYOS provided 38 days of jazz workshops. 11 teachers have also been working throughout the year offering instruction to children from Nursery to Early Primary School ages in our NYOS Young Years programme.

LONDONThe London leg of the NYOS, NCOS and NYJOS auditions saw many hopefuls auditioning for a place in this

year’s ensembles.

The National Children’s Orchestra of Scotland (NCOS), is NYOS’s symphony orchestra for young musicians aged 8 to14.

NCOS provides an important means of early musical education and performance experience for the young musicians of Scotland, fortunately assured through support from Standard Life. NCOS’s public concerts are often critically acclaimed and the committed and energetic performances given by its young members never fail to amaze and inspire audiences.

Auditions for NCOS are held annually in November. Many of the young musicians involved in NCOS go on to become members of The National Youth Orchestra of Scotland.

“You couldn’t fault this young ensemble.” Aberdeen Press & Journal

NYOS Futures is the contemporary chamber ensemble of NYOS. It is drawn from senior NYOS and Camerata Scotland musicians and aims to introduce young musicians and new audiences to the fascinating world of late 20th and early 21st century classical music.

The interest in NYOS Futures from established music professionals has been encouraging and the ensemble is delighted to have worked with a variety of internationally renowned conductors, soloists and orchestras. Through NYOS Futures, NYOS hopes to encourage an interest in the musicians and music of today and develop and engage future audiences for contemporary classical music.

As part of a festival celebrating Peter Maxwell Davies’ life and work in his 75th year, NYOS’s contemporary chamber ensemble join members of The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra to explore the great Scottish composer’s expression of the Virgin Mary’s bodily assumption into heaven, also illustrated by the famous painting of the same name by El Greco.

A fascinating example of contemporary composition, demanding in its virtuosity, this piece is renowned for its unearthly beauty and tranquillity.

NYOS’s newest initiative is the introduction of a new jazz training orchestra entitled NYJOS Access. This project will provide a platform for between 20 and 25 promising young jazz musicans.

Students who take part in NYJOS Access will benefit from attending a training school which will be complemented by opportunities for performance in a relaxed and informal environment.

NYJOS Access will be a training ground for the next generation of top jazz musicians.

jazz

In March NYJOS Access performed their first ever public concert. Two days of training were followed by a Sunday evening performance for parents and a performance the following day to 400 music students from the Paisley area at Paisley Grammar School.

The performance included lots of audience participation and discussion led by NYJOS Directors Malcolm Edmonstone and Andrew Bain, offering school students the opportunity to listen to, and learn more about, jazz music.

Junior members of NYJOS were invited to participate as lead musicians, providing a development opportunity for them to experience what it is like to lead a section.

The thunderous applause from the appreciative audience as the players left the stage was testimony to the huge success of this pilot project.

“What I look forward to is the fact that from morning to night, there is someone playing good music somewhere and I get to join in and have a jam if I want to!” Siobhan Duncan, Trumpet

Alison Green began her musical career with The National Youth Orchestras of Scotland in the early 80’s, playing with them for three years. She then went on to study at the RSAMD and the Conservatoire de Musique in Geneva. On her return to Scotland Alison freelanced for a few years and then became first bassoon with Scottish Ballet. She then moved on to her present job as second bassoon with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, where she has remained for 20 years.

Here she shares her memories of NYOS and tells us about the positives and negatives of being a professional musician.

How did being part of NYOS help you to get where you are today?

I think NYOS gives you good practise, not only of playing in an orchestra, but also getting on with other musicians. I enjoyed the music and the social side of NYOS and it also gave me a taste for travelling. While I was in NYOS we visited Scandinavia, which was a really enjoyable tour and I clearly remember a very rough trip from Shetland to Orkney on a very uncomfortable boat with a lot of seasick people. When we reached Orkney at some dreadful hour of the morning, the conductor, Nicholas Kraemer, managed to do a few press ups on the quayside. Years later, he came in to conduct the SCO. He immediately spied me across the orchestra. ‘’You were on that boat’’ he said.

spotlight on...alison greenNYOS ALUMNI

What advice would you give young musicians who are just starting out at NYOS?

I would say do your practice at home but then go out and listen to orchestras. Go to concerts, listen to the radio and also listen to singers. As instrumentalists we want to make our instruments sing, so listening to singers and other players can be inspiring. What do you think you would be doing if you were not a musician?

I was torn between studying languages and studying music so I might have been doing something to do with foreign languages. What are the best and worst elements of being a musician?

The best elements are having the chance to do a bit of foreign touring and having the chance to play alongside some fantastic musicians and also for some inspiring conductors. I suppose the worst element would be the antisocial hours, but I feel lucky that I am often free in the morning so I have time to do other things. It can be frustrating when I have to work at weekends, as I would like

to spend more time with my husband and children.

What is your favourite piece of music to play?

I don’t have a favourite piece of music, although I have some memorable performances which stick in my mind; The Creation by Haydn conducted by Sir Charles Mackerras, Beethoven’s Symphony No.7 conducted by Simon Rattle, Le Grande Messe des Morts by Berlioz conducted by Raphael Frühbeck de Burgos and, from my years in Scottish Ballet, Romeo and Juliet by Prokofiev.

Alison will be performing with The Scottish Chamber Orchestra in their south of Scotland tour at the end of May, their Highlands tour in June and at The Playhouse as part of the Edinburgh Festival at the end of August. (www.sco.org.uk)
