Rule 9-10, Ten Second Backcourt

• No visual count. Use the shot clock. If no shot clock, use a visual count.

• Trail has primary count. New Lead will have secondary responsibility for this. Give example. Press in the BC. Trail has tight M/M defense being played.

• Count shall be reset on all stoppages except;• If the defense causes the ball to go out of bounds

• If the offense is to retain possession of the ball after a held ball.

• If a technical foul is assessed to the offense.

Rule 9-10, Ten Second Backcourt

• We must use good communication with this rule.• Shot Clock Operator- Our communications with this person must begin

before the game and continue throughout the game.

• Coaches- Good idea to communicate with coaches how much time they have left, whether the shot clock was reset or how much time is left.

• Other Officials- Must have a conversation in pre-game conference.

Rule 4-32-2 Resumption of Play

• If a team is not ready to play following the final warning horn following a time out or Intermission.• The first time is a warning.

• The second time the ball is placed on the floor.• (Be very careful with this)

Rule 5-14-5, Charged Time Outs

• 60 second time outs. Warning horn at 45 seconds. 3 per game.

• 30 second time outs. Warning horn at 15 seconds. 2 per game. One each half. Use it or lose it.

5-14-2, Option to Advance

• Charged time out under 1 minute to go in game.

• Rebound but has not advanced.

• Not passed

• Not dribbled

5-14-2, Option to Advance

• As we report the time out, the coach will tell us what kind of time out he/she wants……30 or 60 second time out. The coach must also tell the ref if he/she wants to Advance.

• If the ball is Advanced, it is put into play at the 28 foot mark table side.

• We must communicate with defensive coach as well as to where the ball will be in-bounded.

• Some gyms do not have a 28 foot mark. If not, the home team will be required to put down some gym tape to mark to spot.

5-14-2, Option to Advance

• Time out must be taken by offensive team in order to Advance.

• If ball is dribbled then Option to Advance is off.

• If ball is fumbled, option is still available.

Post Players as Ball Handlers/Dribblers

• When PP turn and face the basket they now become Ball Handlers/Dribblers and are subject to the same protections as a BH/D at the top of the key for example.• If the defensive player places 2 hands on the BH/D, it is a foul

• If the defensive player places and keeps a hand on the BH/D, it is a foul

• If the defensive player alternates hands touching the BH/D, it is a foul

• If the defensive player places an arm bar on the BH/D, it is a foul

8-2-1, Bonus Free Throws

• Teams will be awarded 2 Free Throws on the 5th team foul of every quarter.

• 1 and 1 will be eliminated.

• Team fouls reset every quarter

• OT considered an extension of the 4th quarter.

Replacing Disqualified Players

• Teams will have 15 seconds to replace.

• A warning horn will signal immediately after the official informs the table.

Time Outs

• (3) Sixty Second Time Outs- Has been 4 T.O.’s in the past.

• Time Out length reduced from 75 seconds to 60 seconds

• (2) 30 second Time Outs. 1 T.O. allowed each half. “Use it or Lose it”

NYSGBOA Mechanics

• Stop Clock on Fouls

• Inbounds Chopping- Counting, and then Modified Chop with Fist

• Warnings- Whatever warning it is, put it in the book and tell the other official.

NYS Girls Basketball Rules, Adjustments from NCAA Women’s Rules

• Rule 1-7-1, Three Point Field Goal Line- Shall read as follows: ‘From the center of the basket to the outside edge of the three-point line, shall be a distance of 19 feet, 9 inches.’

• Rule 1-8, Rule 4-35-7, Rule 4-56, Rule 10-1-12, Restricted Arc. This rule will not be followed this year.

• Rule 1-19-1, Shot Clock Displays- Shall read as follows: ‘Two visible shot clocks, one at each end of the court. If the shot clocks are not functional, then we will play the game with an alternate timing device. (Both clocks must be working. If only one works, it may not be used)

NYS Girls Basketball Rules, Adjustments from NCAA Women’s Rules

• Rule 5-6-1, Length of Periods- Shall read as follows: ‘Playing time shall consist of 4 quarters of 8 minutes each with 1 minute intermission between the 1st and 2nd quarters and between the 3rd and 4th quarters.’ There will be a 10 minute intermission between the 2nd and 3rd quarters.

• Rule 5-7-2, End of Period- Clarification: the signal for the end of the period or the shot clock interval shall be the sounding of the horn for that device and not the numerals on the clock.(0:00)

• Rule 5-8-2, Extra Periods- Shall be 4 minutes in length. Extra Periods are a continuation of the 4th quarter. Each team gets an additional :30 second time out. Foul situation remains the same. Extra period is started by a jump ball with teams going the same way as the 4th quarter.
