Tena Koutou, e hoa ma. Nga mihi nui kia koutou. Dear Parents, Caregivers and friends of the school. Our week got off to a high energy start when we welcomed the NZ Marist Colts Rugby Team to our school. The boys in the team and the coaching staff were wonderful ambassadors as sportsmen and young Catholics. The team was comprised of Samoan, Fijian, Cook Island and New Zealand players who are under 23 and play for Marist sides. There was also one special player from Uruguay, who our Rippa Team enjoyed meeting, as they will be playing as ‘Uruguay’ at theRippa World Cup in September. The boys in the team talked about how our school Gospel Values and the 8 C’s were mirrored in the culture and faith of their team. Some of the teachers, the Principal, (they were strong boys!) and students were then lifted in line-outs and participated in challenging catching activities, to win sports gear for the school. The Marist boys then shared their team song and haka and our Kapa Haka boys responded with our school haka. Did you know that Marist is a combination of ‘Mary’ and ‘Christ’? This week we have had Redwood return to their classroom and tomorrow Heidelberg and Lourdes will return to their classrooms. Barbier have vacated their classroom and they are now based in the library. Barbier and McKenna classrooms will now begin their seismic and modernisation upgrade. We are hoping to have the building work completed by the end of the Term 3 holidays. Our newest classroom ‘Trinity’ also started this week. Trinity is named after the three persons of our Catholic Christian Godhead; the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Paula Corlett is teaching the new entrants/Year 1’s in this classroom. The Friends’ of St Joseph’s are now in full swing organising the Art Auction which is to be held on 13th November. A newsletter will come out next week with ways that the community can help at the Art Auction. The evening is a great social time and I encourage you all to organise your friends to keep this date free, so they can come and enjoy the evening too. The photo on the front cover appeared on a social media post this week. The photo from 1958 shows St Joseph’s as just the original main block and the Fatima Hall. The school consisted of four classrooms and the hall. It looks like Spotswood was yet to be built. The area behind the school is just paddocks and Devon Intermediate is still being constructed. All the best to all of our runners for tomorrows cross country. God Bless Mike Dowd (Principal)

FRIENDS’ OF ST JOSEPH’S UPDATES

A Mufti Day will be held on Friday 28th August where we asking each family to donate luxury grocery items for our raffle hampers.

Raffle tickets will be coming home with the children in early September for the raffle fundraiser we are organising alongside the Art Auction.

This year we will not be selling the individual student canvases but we will have a display of children’s art at the Auction. Class collaboratively produced canvases will still be auctioned on the night.

FOSJ children’s disco is to be held on 11th September.

STUDENT LATENESS I would really like us to set a goal of being the most punctual school in New Zealand. School starts at 8.50am: please make sure you are organised for your children to arrive at school around 8.30am. If children arrive at 8.30am they have some social time, a chance to read messages that the teacher may have and an opportunity to set up their learning for the day. Children who arrive at the bell or after the bell usually interrupt class prayer and add to the tasks in the office. I am looking forward to the number of late children reducing please.
