CAREERS FAIR 2013
NZMA CAREERS FAIR 2013 4
At NZMA and particularly at NZMA Careers we had an outstanding year 2013 so far. We have already placed 30% more students into employment than in the year before. This is also a result of our new team structure, our widespread initiatives and our willingness to walk the extra mile for you, our students, and your careers.
NZMA, as one of the best PTEs in New Zealand, is dedicated to your success. This is why we meet employers every week and tell them how great you are, organise recruitment events with employers, help you with your CV and interview skills and liaise with the tutors to find work experience opportunities for you. We invite employers to our industry events and our industry advisory group meetings to strengthen our bonds to the industries we educate in and make sure NZMA’s courses are up to date – so you will have all the skills you need to start your career.
For the first time since the new team was formed we are going to host a Careers Fair and a high calibre of exhibitors and guests speakers will be here to talk to you. The employers will bring open vacancies with them, accept CVs on the day of the fair and are happy to have a chat with you! Also, on the day of the fair you will be able to go in to a draw to win a prize should you be able to get your NZMA Careers Fair passport stamped by all employers listed!
The Careers Fair is an attractive marketplace for meetings between businesses, students, graduates and tutors. At the event, students and graduates are supported in their careers and, at the same time, the connections between

NZMA and our partners will be strengthened. The young talent at NZMA has the opportunity to speak directly about the availability of work experience, internships, part time and full time employment with potential employers or make valuable business contacts early on in their studies.
The Careers Fair also offers our tutors an opportunity to exchange information and experience with partners from industry and business. Often, collaborations and new projects can have their starting point at these events.
For companies the Careers Fair does not only provide a direct access to our highly talented and passionate students in their respective industries. They can also build relationships to graduates of other disciplines needed for their business. For example, a hotel chain may like to talk to Contact Centre students for their national reservations team. Besides the numerous company stands students can expect an extensive programme of talks from guest speakers and company presentations about a range of career-related topics.
All visitors are warmly invited to use the numerous opportunities at the Careers Fair: perhaps a new business contact will be the first step on your personal career path.
A heartfelt thanks to all companies for their participation. Our thanks also goes to all the people outside and inside of NZMA, who participated in the preparation and implementation of this event.
We wish all participants a successful NZMA Careers Fair 2013.
Kind Regards,
Gareth Brown
NZMA Careers Team Leader

Eden Park is New Zealand's largest stadium. Our rich sporting and social history, and our international profile, is unmatched by any other stadium in the country. Eden Park has been in existence as a sports ground since 1900. It began its life as a swamp, but by 1914 the ground was drained and turned into two ovals. The Park became the home of Auckland Cricket in 1910. The Auckland RugbyUnion leased the Park in 1914, officially making Eden Park its home in 1925. In 1926 a Trust was set up that provided for a group of Trustees to manage Eden Park primarily for the benefit of Auckland Cricket and Auckland Rugby. The Trust still manages the Park today.

In this role he is responsible for overseeing the team, driving success, building new relationships and forging work experience, internship and employment opportunities for our students.
“I like to think that I will be able to help people match the academic knowledge with the practical experience and develop their roles either into a full-time job they enjoy, or onto a career path they are passionate about.”
Hilary Plummer 07 839 0930 | [email protected]

Chris Schlapa 09 309 7802 | [email protected] | Facebook - Chris at NZMA
Careers Advisor, Auckland Central Campus
After completing her degree in Social Work, Chris worked as a placement officer at a job centre and later managed the Albstadt-Sigmaringen University Careers Centre in her home country, Germany. In this role she was responsible for centralising a range of employment-related functions servicing 3000 students. In 2012, Chris moved to New Zealand and completed a master’s degree at the University of Auckland. She joined the NZMA Careers team at the beginning of 2013 and says the most rewarding part of her job is seeing students develop and offering them help and advice in the employment field.
“I am enjoying contributing my skills in careers counselling to the personal and professional development of young people. I do not only like to ‘find a way’, but I also love to ‘make a way’ and be part of a team that actively works on creating new opportunities for NZMA students every day.”
Students and graduates will definitely benefit from her proactive attitude and her three years’ experience in careers counselling. Having recently moved to New Zealand, Chris also understands the challenges of learning and working in a new country, so is able to relate especially well to our international students.
Rachel Loughlin 09 309 7802 | [email protected] | Facebook - NZMA Rachel
Employment Advisor, Auckland Central Campus (2014: Sylvia Park Campus)
Rachel Loughlin has the ideal set of skills to hook up NZMA students and graduates with the perfect employers. Having been a student, an employee and an employer herself, she knows just what each party needs to ensure a job opportunity is “the right fit”.
Originally from the UK, Rachel spent three years working in the recruitment sector over there, before moving to New Zealand and joining the NZMA team in January 2013. During that time she worked on both temporary and permanent positions, finding jobs for job hunters in the commercial sector.
“I used to interview candidates on a daily basis in order to find out what they wanted to do career-wise, what skills they already had and also to find out more about them as a person to ensure the
right personality fit.”

Rachel excelled in the role and was soon promoted to Assistant Manager. In her final year with the company, she was appointed Branch Manager.
“I have personal experience across the full spectrum of job hunting. I have been a student so I understand and am empathetic to the difficulties of juggling work and study. In the past I have used the services of employment agencies to help me find work, and when I was Branch Manager of a recruitment company I had to recruit my own staff.”
Thanks to her extensive recruitment knowledge and skills, NZMA’s job seekers are in great hands.
Jay Keukeu 09 270 1266 | [email protected] | Facebook - Jay NZMACareers
Employment Advisor, Auckland South Campus
Since leaving high school as a teenager, Jay Keukeu has always been torn between two career paths – health and education. Initially health won through and Jay spent ten years working for the Counties Manukau District Health Board, both in clinical and non-clinical roles. His last position there was as an Associate Planner in the Planning and Funding Division. Jay studied hard in order to get ahead in his career, gaining a Bachelor of Health Sciences majoring in Health Management and a Post Graduate Diploma in Public Health. He is currently doing a Masters in Public Health.
But after a decade in the health sector Jay decided it was time to satiate his other passion. A teaching job at NZMA had strong appeal. His sister had been a student there, so he knew all about the school’s stellar reputation. What’s more, the Manurewa resident was keen to work in, and support, his local community. Jay became a business tutor at NZMA in 2008 and later joined the Student Services Team as a student advisor. More recently Jay has been appointed Employment Advisor for NZMA Careers.
