The Lord Provides – Even when we strive to be close with God we can wonder if he’s really listening to us or if he really cares for us with an unquenchable love. This is especially true in moments of trial or challenge. Yet, we know that when we focus our eyes and ears and hearts on the things of God we can see his love at work for us in all things. In his letter to the Romans, Saint Paul reminds
us that “the gifts and the call of God are irrevocable,” that nothing can separate us from his love. Are you challenged by the changes that will soon take place in your parish and throughout the Diocese of Pittsburgh? Join Bishop David Zubik in prayer and worship at one of the On Mission for The Church Alive! Summer Sessions and be renewed in God’s love for his people. The changes may challenge us, but we trust in the work of the Holy Spirit to provide the gifts and resources for the Church to grow and thrive. The Summer Sessions will be held from 7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. on the following days: Thursday, August 24 at Saint Mary of the Assumption, Glenshaw; Monday, August 28 at Saint Thomas More, Bethel Park; Tuesday, August 29 at Saint Margaret Mary, Moon Township; Wednesday, August 30 at Saint Kilian, Adams/Cranberry Townships. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more about it and to stay informed.

MINYAN
“For the sake of ten [righteous], I will not destroy it.” (Genesis 19:32) Thus the Lord answers Abraham, who has learned of God’s intention to destroy the city of Sodom. Abraham asks whether God would destroy Sodom even if there were still 50, or 45, or 40, or 30, or 20, or only 10 righteous men living in Sodom. As it turns out, Lot and his family are the only righteous household remaining, so they flee as God’s angels destroy Sodom with fire from Heaven.
One lesson of this story is that it takes a community to sustain righteousness. One lone household is not enough. Modern Jews practice a similar discipline: Lawful Sabbath worship requires a minyan, an assembly of at least ten Jewish men, of age and properly schooled. So also for Catholic Christians, substantive fellowship is necessary to sustain life in the Spirit.
Even if your family is a stable, Catholic household, are you embedded in a community of nine other such households? If not, then do something about it! Sustain your friendships with others, certainly, but make a point of developing especially a social life with other Catholic Christians.
For young adults, who don’t enjoy the same stability or history as older adults, fellowship can be hard. One of the purposes of Living Jesus is to make the deeper life of the Spirit possible for such persons. Living Jesus is also meant to ignite or re-ignite basic Christian virtues such as gratitude, trust, and an appreciation for the work of God in and among us—and it can give us the tools to pass these virtues on to others.
If you’re young, or new to the parish, or raising children, or otherwise responsible for others’ faith, then please participate in Living Jesus. That’d mean meeting once a week for six weeks. Another round starts Monday nights, September 11. Email me at [email protected] for reservations.
—Fr. Dave
COME AND SEE: High school men: come to encounter the Lord through a day of prayer, fun, and brotherhood on Saturday, September 16, from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. at St. Paul Seminary. HEARTS SPEAK TO HEARTS
THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY…
In the Catholic Church, the months of August, September, and October are traditionally dedicated to Mary, under the titles of
Immaculate Heart of Mary, Our Lady of Sorrows, and Our Lady of the Rosary, respectively. Do a bit of research and you’ll learn much
about the many feasts, as well as Marian saints, honored during these months. Additionally, Our Lady is celebrated with special
dedications during May and December. Why so much Mary?
No fewer than 20 Popes have markedly influenced Mariology through the issuance of many important documents explaining
her place in our piety, including Apostolic Letters, Apostolic Exhortations, Encyclicals, and Papal Bulls, offering devotions,
dogmas, feast days and prayers.
Pope Francis, among others, calls her Mary, Mother of Evangelization: “With the Holy Spirit, Mary is always present in the midst of
the people. She joined the disciples in praying for the coming of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:14) and thus made possible the missionary
outburst which took place at Pentecost. She is the Mother of the Church which evangelizes, and without her we could never
truly understand the spirit of the new evangelization. (EG 284.)
If you don’t have the wherewithal to look into Mary’s place in the work of evangelization yourself, consider committing some of
your prayer time to this great prayer which Pope Francis used to complete his Apostolic Exhortation, Evangelii Gaudium (Joy of
the Gospel): Mary, Virgin and Mother, you who, moved by the Holy Spirit, welcomed the word of life in the depths of your humble faith: as you gave yourself completely to the Eternal One, help us to say our own “yes” to the urgent call, as pressing as ever, to proclaim the good news of Jesus. Filled with Christ’s presence, you brought joy to John the Baptist, making him exult in the womb of his mother. Brimming over with joy, you sang of the great things done by God. Standing at the foot of the cross with unyielding faith, you received the joyful comfort of the resurrection, and joined the disciples in awaiting the Spirit so that the evangelizing Church might be born. Obtain for us now a new ardor born of the resurrection, that we may bring to all the Gospel of life which triumphs over death. Give us a holy courage to seek new paths, that the gift of unfading beauty may reach every man and woman. Virgin of listening and contemplation, Mother of love, Bride of the eternal wedding feast, pray for the Church, whose pure icon you are, that she may never be closed in on herself or lose her passion for establishing God’s kingdom. Star of the new evangelization, help us to bear radiant witness to communion, service, ardent and generous faith, justice and love of the poor, that the joy of the Gospel may reach to the ends of the earth, illuminating even the fringes of our world. Mother of the living Gospel, wellspring of happiness for God’s little ones, pray for us. Amen. Alleluia!
ARE YOU SPREADING THE GOOD NEWS? How does our parish attract inquirers who consider becoming Catholic? The short answer is you! Responding to the prompting of the Holy Spirit, parish members open their hearts to welcome others. They take seriously their call to share the Divine message of salvation. It happens in parish families, in the workplace, in gatherings with friends and neighbors, and in daily contacts. We thank God who continuously strengthens each of us who seek to do his will in offering a gentle welcome to the Catholic faith. “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them….and teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.” The RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation) is THE PROCESS for becoming Catholic. You may then call the Office for Initiation 412-276-1011 ext. 225 for the next step in your “spreading the good news.”

CHRISTIANITY AND RACE ACCORDING TO THE
CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH 1934 Created in the image of the one God and equally endowed with rational souls, all men have the same nature and the same origin. Redeemed by the sacrifice of Christ, all are called to participate in the same divine beatitude: all therefore enjoy an equal dignity. 1935 The equality of men rests essentially on their dignity as persons and the rights that flow from it: Every form of social or cultural discrimination in fundamental personal rights on the grounds of sex, race, color, social conditions, language, or religion must be curbed and eradicated as incompatible with God's design. (Gaudium et spes 29) 2113 Idolatry not only refers to false pagan worship. It remains a constant temptation to faith. Idolatry consists in divinizing what is not God. Man commits idolatry whenever he honors and reveres a creature in place of God, whether this be gods or demons (for example, satanism), power, pleasure, race, ancestors, the state, money, etc. Jesus says, " Y o u c a n n o t s e r v e G o d a n d mammon." (Matthew 6:24) Many martyrs died for not adoring "the Beast" refusing even to simulate such worship. (Revelation 13-14) Idolatry rejects the unique Lordship of God; it is therefore incompatible with communion with God. (Origen, Contra Celsum 2)
LADIES OF CHARITY —SHARING STORIES Why I joined the Ladies of Charity ?
By request of the president of the SEAS chapter of the Ladies of Charity, I was asked to show the group how to make sleeping mats from plastic grocery store bags for the homeless. After the demonstration, I was invited to stay for the meeting and was surprised to learn how many charitable and selfless acts this organization was involved with. This truly interested me, so I asked to attend another meeting to learn more, and the rest is history. The LOC at SEAS is involved with many ministries to help the hungry, homeless, lonely and sick. The LOC is always looking for new ministries to help others learn about Christ and feel needed. This is what drew me to join the LOC at SEAS to help the growing number of people that need help and prayers to live a more fulfilling life in Christ. —Lucy Mensor
