guy who may make you think you’re James Bond on the 3rd of March, read more on page 24.While there will be tough times ahead, all-nighters slaving away at the books, struggling to pay rent because you accidentally spent you cash on drinks and greasy food, the occasional undeserved bad mark, and a small bout of scurvy because you’ve been living off two-minute noodles, it’s all part of the “student experience.”

However, there is hope; we have something for you to always look forward to in the form of a great magazine called In Unison. You can pick this up free every second Monday of term time. It will help you battle those long hours, scurvy and teach you tricks on living cheap, as well as inform, enlighten and entertain you.

In Unison is your magazine, it’s paid for by you and is about you. So, if you want to be involved in it, get in touch [email protected].

Have fun out there, remember to get involved this year and make it something you want to look back on with envy, not regret, when you’re out in the real world, slugging away, paying the mortgage, spending all your money on booze, still battling scurvy…

Stacey Knott In Unison Editor

I KNOW THIS IS A CLICHÉ BUT THERE IS TRUTH TO IT; YOUR TERTIARY DAYS ARE SOME OF THE BEST DAYS OF YOUR LIFE.

Think about it, all you really have to do is get up, go and listen to people talk about the things you really care about (you wouldn’t be studying what you don’t care about…right?) surrounded by people there for the same reason.

Depending on what it is you are studying, the majority of your day will be fi lled with “study hours” aka free time. You do the readings you need to do later at night, and then the remaining 60 percent of your time, you have fun.

It’s pretty sweet.

This orientation magazine is about all the things going on in the next few weeks, and about getting you used to living the student lifestyle. This new (or continuing) lifestyle means free or cheap gigs, like Sounds In The Sun, good laughs (go to the page 18, then to the USU Comedy Night on the 4th of March) and good friends (go to page eight to learn how to fi nd these).

Of course, drinking is a pretty big part of the student culture. If you are old enough/ into this carryon, then go to page 26 to learn how to deal with hangovers. This issue also features plenty of interviews so you know who you’ll be seeing at Sounds In The Sun. We also have an interview with that big “Wellington Sound” band playing at Carrington’s on the 5th of March as well as the

is the biggest Orientation event in the country! We also organise sports tournaments and events – one of the biggest sports events of the year is Uni Games which is coming up in April so if you’re keen on sports this will be an awesome competition to get involved in. If you have a hobby that other students may also interested in you could always join a club – or even start your own!

In Unison, your free student magazine always needs student contributors so if you’re the creative type this could be the outlet for you. If you are more political minded – how about running for being on the Student Executive? You could even be the next student president!

As you can see there’s heaps to do so get into it! Have an awesome time, make new friends and make the most of what’s on offer to you at Unitec.

Best of Luck!

APPEARANCES

Forget the saying “don’t judge people on their looks.” What someone chooses to wear is a direct refl ection of their personality. For example, would a guy who lives off Jack Daniels, resides in West Auckland, and plays in a metal band, sport a number one, stubbies, and Blues shirt? I think not. People wear clothes that refl ect their interests, so, if you want to fi nd people similar to you, in lifestyle at least, go for the ones that dress the same. Indie kids (probably art students) go for those wearing skinny black jeans, a Dinosaur Junior or Belle and Sebastian shirt, perhaps a scarf, and nice shoes.Conversely, we do want diversity here, so you should try spark up a conversation with people who dress differently. Just because someone is into sports, does not mean they’re a meat-head, and just because a girl wears a short skirt, does not mean she’s a hoe (though white pants, tribal tattoos on the lower back and bleach blonde hair may do).

Friends are pretty essential to an enjoyable

time at Unitec, so if you’re new here, you

are probably in need of some (or maybe you

are sick of your current ones).

Even if you have just left high-school, and

have your high-school friends in tow, it’s

a good idea to diversify and extend your

circle, so take note of the following tips on

how to make new pals.

HOW TO:HOW TO: become the

SOCIAL HAUNTS

You won’t meet people by sitting up the back of a lecture theatre where no one can see you, or at a darkened, corner table in the library. You have to go where the people are.Go to Carrington’s when there are drink specials on, and try the above tips. There are also many clubs and sport teams on campus where you can meet people with at least one thing in common, so check those out. Tutorials and lecture theatres are good spots to friend hunt, this just requires simple movements, such as asking your neighbour what the lecturer means (then comment on it), use the compliment tactic, or of someone makes an interesting point, approach them after class to discuss.People tend to gravitate towards The Hub at Unitec, so look out for people looking as lost and lonely as yourself. You could start a club. Also, art students congregate at the Long Black café, by Building One, so even if you aren’t doing performing arts or design, but people who do are to your liking, then you’ll fi nd friends there.

HYGIENE

Practice good hygiene, if you don’t, don’t expect to attract people. There is nothing sexy or compelling about morning breath, hangover breath, or even cheese breath.Gum, toothpaste and mints = friends for life.Showering and deodorant are also essential in forging new friendships; it’s the same rules as high-school really, only the weird, gross kids smell bad, so take note. Girls, this is a good chance to attract friends through perfume, and a good way to grab a compliment if you douse yourself in something nice, and I don’t mean Impulse.

CONVERSATION STARTERS

Speaking of compliments, this is also a great way to talkto people.Go up to someone who has something you like, such as shoes, and say “nice shoes.” If they reply, ask them where they got them from. This should lead into an easy conversation. While striking up a conversation with a complete stranger seems daunting, the more you do it, the easier it will be. Start with banal comments, such as the weather, the size of the queue, etc, and as your confi dence grows, you can try different approaches.

You have toured extensively, where have some of your favourite places been, and why? Guam because we almost got deported before the show! 14 hours in customs before the governor of Guam personally came and escorted us to the concert.Hawaii because of the sashimi!

For someone who hasn’t seen you live before, what should they expect and how can they enjoy the experience the most? Expect to loose your voice from opening you soul to the notion of being spiritually satisfi ed.

Your lyrics often deal with political issues, what are some of the issues you think are important at the moment?Understanding, compassion, being able to look after ourselves and the environment.

What does Katchafi re plan on doing in 2009? Touring Europe and The States again, release a fourth studio album!

What is essential to you to make a good summer? Good book, cold drink and a couple of weekends at home with the family.

HAMILTON’S KATCHAFIRE ARE AT THE FOREFRONT OF REGGAE IN NEW ZEALAND, RECOGNISED AS ONE OF NEW ZEALAND’S HARDEST WORKING BANDS. FRONT MAN LOGAN BELL, WHOSE BROTHER AND FATHER ARE ALSO IN THE GROUP, LETS US IN ON WHAT IT’S LIKE TO BE IN SUCH A SUCCESSFUL BAND.

You have been together for over ten years now, what have the career highlights been, and how do you feel you have evolved as a band over this time? Every day is a highlight. I think staying together as a tight unit is our best attribute... and we will evolve through our many musical infl uences!

What is it like playing in a band with both your brother and father?Pretty mean. Proud love it when dad pulls out a sweet lead that makes peoples faces melt off! That’s my pops.

The 2000s have been huge for roots-reggae in New Zealand, do you think it will continue to be popular into the next ten years?I hope we as kiwis can keep holding the torch for many years to come, we are the chosen fl ame holders and we have much to be proud of.

RECLOOSEI heard the live band will be getting a “fresh re-launch for 2009- new name, new look, new music”, what have you got up your sleeve, and why are you changing it?Yes indeed, Starblazers are here. Yeah, I said it. STARBLAZERS. The change is to fi rst differentiate between myself and the band as its own entity, and to allow us to function as a band in the writing and recording aspects. We’ll of course still play ’Recloose’ tunes from the albums but we’re also beginning to pen things collectively. So be on the lookout for an EP and LP this year, a big profi le push, and antics of all sorts.

What should we expect from your Sounds In The Sun show?Again, it’s all about the party. We bring you up, we coax you down tenderly, and then we blow the roof off the joint again. And we really, really like to encourage dancing like you’re possessed by the funk. What was the reason behind your move from Wellington to Auckland?Mainly a personal one, but it has been great for me creatively and I’m surprised at how much I’ve been enjoying the city! How do the music scenes differ?Wellington is so insular that everybody knows everybody and ends up playing on each other’s music. Which I think, is why it has developed such a reputation for its sound. Auckland functions more in pockets, which I have grown to dig a bit, and lends itself to more of a variety. What is essential to you to make a good summer?Chilled wine, sunshine, and a boogie.

IF THERE WAS A ROOF OVER THE SOUNDS IN THE SUN ORIENTATION SHOW, AUCKLAND BASED PRODUCER/MUSICIAN/DJ MATTHEW CHICOINE A.K.A RECLOOSE SAYS THE SOUNDS HE AND HIS LIVE BAND MAKE, WOULD BLOW IT OFF. THE RECLOOSE LIVE BAND IS MADE OF A MIX OF NEW ZEALAND TALENTS WHO HAVE COME OUT OF THEIR RESPECTIVE BANDS TO PRODUCE DANCE INDUCING TROPICAL TECHNO FUNK.

What have been your highlights of summer to date?I’m pretty sure the whole band would agree on this one- Rhythm and Vines on December 30th. It’d been a little while since we played together but sometimes you get the chemistry just right and happily, it was one of those days. We had a packed audience, the sun was shining, and the band was absolutely cooking!

What is the Recloose Live Band all about? How does it differ from just Recloose? The Recloose Live Band is a collective of NZ’s dopest musos playing a stew of space funk and disco soul. It’s really about having a party but also highlighting the stellar talent we have in the crew. The ’Recloose’ moniker is actually just me, it’s the name I DJ and produce under, which I have come to realise, can be confusing for people.

What are you working on at the moment, and what is planned for this year? We’ve got big plans this year…on the music tip we’re all locking ourselves in the studio to do some proper recordings, starting with a fi ve-track EP of stone-cold soul/funk/disco covers hand selected by myself and the band. And we’re also gigging regularly through the summer.

How did the tour of Europe go last year?It was good; we did a bunch of tours around France and the UK. We did Switzerland, it was a brief tour, and we only did about eight shows. It was really good.Switzerland was a bit of a surprise, a girl had been doing fruit picking down in Blenheim and got a copy of my album, and her partner was a DJ on the radio there (in Switzerland), so it actually ended up getting played quite a lot. I walked into a totally sold out 600 people venue, in the middle of Switzerland, and there were a bunch of people singing the songs as well. It was quite surreal; it was probably the best gig over there.

For someone who hasn’t seen you before, what should they expect from your set at Sounds InThe Sun?It should be good, really mellow, laid back, chilling with a glass of wine in the sun, more of a warmer-upper set.

What is essential to you to make a good summer?I would have to say a good game of cricket in the backyard.

RECENT AUCKLAND ACQUISITION, SOUL SINGER HOLLIE SMITH, MOVED UP HERE FROM WELLINGTON ABOUT A YEAR AGO AND IS CURRENTLY WORKING ON HER SECOND ALBUM. SHE WILL BE PLAYING BOTH OLD AND NEW MATERIAL WITH HER THREE PIECE BAND AT SOUNDS IN THE SUN.

What have you been doing over the last year?Taking it pretty easy actually...done a few tours, Europe and Australia and trying to write for the next album.

How is the next album coming along? We’re getting there slowly, there were a few hold-ups with other stuff, but it’s getting there.I’m still writing, I’m about eight songs in and a few to go and then we will just be arranging, and preproduction and things like that. I want to get it out this year, optimistically.

How will it differ from the fi rst album? It’s a lot more song orientated I think, as opposed to the fi rst album which was more based on arrangements. This is defi nitely more songy, but I haven’t begun to arrange or develop the songs yet, but that might change still.

HOLLIE SMITH

What should people expect from a Kora show?Five guys playing happy reggae (not)....expect fi ve guys playing ”new school dark soul funk” on live instruments and samplers..

In other interviews, you have said your father is a great infl uence, what does he think of the band? I’m sure he’s proud. Our family know how hard we have worked on our music, so they are happy it’s paying off for us.

Will you be playing any new material at Sounds In The Sun, if so, what can we expect from it?Yes we will play some new songs, they will be a bit weird but I guess…so are we...you’re going to love it or you’re going to hate it.

What is in the pipeline for Kora?Europe, U.S.A, Japan, Kora album number 2 and a few surprises in between.

What is essential to you to make a good summer?Sounds in the Sun.

KORA, THE FOUR BROTHERS AND “A BROTHER FROM ANOTHER MOTHER,” WILL ALSO BE ROCKING OUT AT SOUNDS IN THE SUN. THEIR ECLECTIC MIX OF ROOTS, REGGAE, FUNK AND EVEN DASHES OF METAL, WHILE STILL HAVING A VERY PACIFIC ORIENTATED SOUND, HAS CAUGHT THE ATTENTION OF NEW ZEALAND.

Your latest album deals with the music industry, particularly negative aspects of it, why did you choose to write about this?We don’t actually have any problems with the industry its been very kind to us we do use a lot of metaphorical lyrics, people can take them many different ways, and that’s the way we like it, we do focus on rip offs but we defi nitely don’t have issues with the industry. We are all part of this music industry.

When and where are your favourite places to play?We toured Europe in November 08. My favourite places were Christiania Denmark....and Amsterdam Holland…people over there are so dam hip.

KORA

Following the success of ‘Everything,’ do you have any other collaborations in the pipeline? Most of my work is collaborative. I’m working a lot with my engineer Evan Short (ex-Concord Dawn), so he’s a key contributor. I’m doing more stuff with Vince Harder, PNC and David Dallas at the moment too.

What is happening with your label at the moment? We just released the debut David Dallas EP Something Now. He has a full length in the works also. PNC has nearly completed his album for ’09 entitled Bazooka Kid and I’m working on more singles and an album in May/June.

How do you fi nd/decide what to include in yourDJ sets? I fi nd most new music online. From blogs or online stores like Beatport and iTunes. I just play music that I like and that I reckon other people would like too.

How do you discover/choose artists tocollaborate with? When I hear somebody I like locally I just introduce myself. If we have a good rapport then we’ll get in the studio. It’s pretty simple. I just let my instincts guide me. I trust myself and my ear for talent.

Savage cracked The States with Swing; do you hope to do something similar? I’m ready for whatever is in store for me. I’m very happy for Savage, it couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy, but I guarantee even he didn’t plan or expect for that to happen. The one thing that you can do is be prepared for whatever comes your way and that’s what I like to do. Be prepared.

What are your plans for 2009? Make more good music, play a tonne of great gigs, do some travelling mid-year and keep having fun!

What is essential to you to make a good summer?Sunshine, warm weather and time off.

P-MONEY IS KICKING OFF SOUNDS IN THE SUN AT 12PM SO GET DOWN THERE STRAIGHT AFTER CLASS TO CATCH HIM.

IT’S HARD TO FIND A STATION THAT DOESN’T PLAY P-MONEY’S LATEST HIT SINGLE ‘EVERYTHING’ AT THE MOMENT. THE INFECTIOUS POP TRACK FEATURING VOCALS BY VINCE HARDER HAS BEEN A HUGE HIT OVER SUMMER, ACCOMPANYING DANCE FLOOR GRINDS AND BEACHSIDE BBQS. THIS TRACK AND P-MONEY’S MANY OTHERS ARE SURE TO GET THE CROWDS DOWN AND DIRTY AT SOUNDS IN THE SUN. WE CAUGHT UP WITH PETER WADAMS, BETTER KNOW AS P-MONEY, TO SEE WHAT 2008 DID TO HIM, AND WHAT HE EXPECTS FROM 2009.

Late last year MTV was advertising for contestants to do an internship with you. What were the ideas behind this and at what stage is the programme in at the moment? The competition is an MTV promotion based around the American MTV production I Want To Work For Diddy where contestants compete to work for P-Diddy. It’s kind of like The Apprentice with Donald Trump. MTV wanted to do a one-off NZ version and they approached me to be the central character. I fi gured it would be fun to do and who knows, I may even fi nd a talented young person who could actually work for me. We are shooting the whole thing this week.

What will you teach the interns? I don’t plan to teach them anything. Instead we will set them some tasks which challenge their character, ability and initiative. From there we will assess who has the right attributes to work with me.

What were your highlights of 08? Defi nitely the success of my single ’Everything’, that tune has been great for my career in lots of ways. It got my profi le back up and broadened people’s perception of who I am/what I do.

TE RADAR NOW ONE OF THOSE RECOGNISABLE FACES THANKS TO TV, HAS HIS FINGERS IN MANY, MANY PIES. HE’S AN AWARD-WINNING SATIRIST, DOCUMENTARY MAKER, WRITER, STAGE AND SCREEN DIRECTOR, AND AMATEUR HISTORIAN. REAL NAME ANDREW J LUMSDEN, TE RADAR’S RECENT WORKS INCLUDE OFF THE RADAR, A SHOW ABOUT SUSTAINABLE LIVING, AND HOMEGROWN, A DOCUMENTARY SERIES LOOKING AT HOW PRODUCE HAS SHAPED NEW ZEALAND.

What’s your secret to making people laugh?Pity.

What’s the funniest situation you have ever found yourself in?All I can say is that it involved something illegal in many countries, and immoral in more.

If you had to sum up your life as one joke, what would it be?A man walks into a bar. “Well at least someone turned up to see me perform,” I said.“Oh, I thought it was bingo night,” he said.

SIMON MCKINNEIS ANOTHER AWARD-WINNING FUNNY MAN. HE WON BEST MALE COMEDIAN AT THE 2007 BILLY T AWARDS, AND WAS A NOMINEE IN 2008. HE ALSO HAS A SWAGGER OF STAND-UP EXPERIENCES BEHIND HIM INCLUDING PULP COMEDY APPEARANCES AND OVER 300 PERFORMANCES THROUGHOUT BRITAIN.

What’s your secret to making people laugh? There is no secret, but one good way is to fi nd something they identify with, even just a little bit, and point out any absurdity in it. Also, use silly voices. Lots.

What’s the funniest situation you have ever found yourself in?Every time I showed up to school in uniform on mufti day. Not funny for me, of course, but even back then I was always entertaining those around me...

COMEDY BASHIf you had to sum up your life as one joke, what would it be?A promoter hired a blonde comedian to headline his show. Upon his arrival, the promoter showed the comedian to the plush hotel he’d be staying in overnight. The next day as the promoter was checking last minute details for the show, he noticed the comedian was very late. He knew which room he was in at the hotel and called him up to ask what happened to him. He answered the phone, panicking, and said, ”I can’t get out of the room!” ”You can’t get out of your room?” the promoter asked. ”Why not?” he replied, ”There are only three doors in here,” he sobbed, ”one is the bathroom, one is the closet, and one has a sign on it that says ’Do Not Disturb’!”

ASIDE FROM BEING A LOOKER,

CORI GONZALEZ-MACURE IS PRETTY TALENTED. HE HAS A PROFILE ON HOLLYWOOD.COM AND EVEN THOUGH IT’S BASICALLY EMPTY, IT’S STILL A SIGN HE’S A BIT OF A BIG SHOT. THE COMEDIAN/ACTOR HAILS FROM WELLINGTON, HAS BEEN A BILLY T AWARD RECIPIENT AND CURRENTLY WORKS AS A REPORTER AND WRITER ON JONO’S NEW SHOW ON C4.

What’s your secret to making people laugh?I’ve always thought it’s good to talk about stuff that the audience can relate to. If someone has been in a similar situation as the one you talk about in your set, the better the chances they’ll laugh at it. What’s the funniest situation you have ever found yourself in?I’ve done some shocking gigs that I laugh about now but wanted to kill myself at the time. One career highlight was after a gig in Taupo a girl took a pooh in the venue and the entire bar had to be cleared out for the night. I guess she felt really strongly about the show. If you had to sum up your life as one joke, what would it be?Knock KnockWho’s there?CoriCori who?Cori Gonzalez-MacuerNever heard of him.

I think the press hyped up the term ”Wellington Sound” which is kind of annoying and funny. But there has been a musical movement of sorts in Wellington and some great bands were formed over the last 5-10 years. We are just The Black Seeds, we have our own sound and try not to compare ourselves too much to other successful New Zealand acts. We are not strictly reggae or dub but obviously those fl avours are there in force.

What are your favourite tracks to play live?At the moment, ‘Afro Phone’ because it’s got an exciting funky feel to it and ‘Rotten Apple’ because it’s really slow and heavy with a big chunky bass sound.

You’ve been together for about ten years now; did you ever think you would be as successful as you are? I always thought we could be a cool band if we kept at it but I didn’t think we would have played some of the huge festivals we have played or that our albums would be released around Europe. I never thought I’d spend so much time in Amsterdam!

How do you feel the band has changed in that time?Well it’s been a long journey for the seeds. We almost split after ’On The Sun’ but kept it together and got in some fresh blood and got serious. We’ve all got older, some have had kids now and we’ve defi nitely got a lot better live too.

What do The Black Seeds plan on doing in 2009?We have a busy February including shows at Homegrown, One Love, Marlborough Food and Wine Fest and The Bush Party Matakana plus others. We are going to start jamming some new ideas for a future album. We are going to Europe again for their summer and we will tour Australia and New Zealand at least once before our summer. And I think there will be a bit of quiet time too for the guys with young families. Should be a good one though. I think we tried to do too much last year so this year we not going to work harder just smarter. Stay alive.

WHEN PEOPLE TALK ABOUT THE “WELLINGTON SOUND” ONE BAND WILL USUALLY COME TO MIND FIRST; THE BLACK SEEDS. DESPITE THE BANDS FEELING ABOUT THIS LABEL, ITS FUSION OF FUNK, DUB, REGGAE AND POP REFLECTS A LAZY NEW ZEALAND LIFESTYLE PRETTY WELL; IT BRINGS IN THE CAFÉ CULTURE, WEEKENDS AT THE BEACH WITH A BARBEQUE, AND DANCING ON THE GRASS TO REGGAE.THE BLACK SEEDS ARE PLAYING WITH TAHUNA BREAKS ON THE 5TH OF MARCH AT BUILDING 202, UNITEC,MT ALBERT

You toured Europe late last year, how did it go? What were some of the highlights?Highlights for me were Roskillde Fest in Copenhagen and our London show at the Astoria. We played a crazy gig in Switzerland at a small ex brothel now club, apparently it was their biggest ever night and fi ve couples were caught having sex in the toilets! It snowed for the fi rst time of the winter too so it was kind of magical and we had massive drunken snow fi ghts. Other highlights include playing with Roots Manuva in Paris and playing a double header with Kora in Paris the second time through.

Do you think you will always be a New Zealandbased band? Yes...It’s where the families are, it’s where we want to be. We travel a lot anyway so we get to see heaps of places and I think if we moved to, say Europe fulltime, it might kill the bands vibe a bit. We can do a lot from New Zealand. Don’t change your bet mid-stream.

You are often thought of as the epitome of the “Wellington Sound.” Do you think this description is still fi tting in Wellington?

The moral of the story: It’s important you know your rights when it comes to that roof above your head.First of all, make sure you check out the place, it sucks fi nding somewhere on trademe and committing to it before you see it.You need to look around and make a note of the condition things are in, and what is included with the pad, such as furniture.

You need a tenancy agreement, it’s the law. Read it before you sign it, it will include the rules, like no parties or no pets.

Fresh out of home and not really sure how

that whole renting thing works? Been burnt

before by a heartless landlord, or confused

about the 2000 dollar bond you’ve been

asked to cough up? Well read on to protect

yourself in the dark, damp and mouldy

renting world.

My fi rst ever fl at ruined a friendship, hosted endangered spiders and destroyed clothes when mould grew on them, every wintry day. Also, the landlord was an asshole. He liked to pretend he was deaf whenever we complained about the above things. At times he would just “pop in to see us,” to subject us to his horrible pyramid marketing scheme DVDs that advertised gadgets to people paranoid about radiowaves.

When we decided to move out, with a months’ notice, he never gave us warning when he wanted to show potential tenants around the house. When it came time for the bond refund, after we had scrubbed that hell-hole clean, he decided to withhold $100 from us because “the place was untidy” when he showed tenants around. That old git certainty lost that battle after we called the Department of Building and Housing and told them of his shady work. We got the whole bond back and he got a warning.

HOW TO:HOW TO: Make sure you

don’t end up l iving on the

streets in a cardboard

fort.. as fun as that may sound

O Mag 2009, PRINT READY.indd 22O Mag 2009, PRINT READY.indd 22 6/02/2009 12:42:39 p.m.6/02/2009 12:42:39 p.m.

There are two types of agreements, periodic tenancy, where you or the landlord give notice on how long you stay, or a fi xed-term one, which can get tricky. This is where you have to stay at the place for a certain time, like a year. So make sure you can commit to this.

You have to pay to live in your pad, this is called rent. It is nearly always paid in advance, either a week or two. Pay this automatically, it’s easy and keeps a good record of what was paid when.

You will also have to pay a bond, which is insurance for the landlord in case you ruin the property or don’t pay your rent. This can be up to four weeks rent. You pay the bond to the landlord who has to give you a receipt for it. You and the landlord fi ll in a Bond Lodgement form, available by calling 0800 737 666. Then the bond is looked after by the Department of Building and Housing. As long as you pay your rent and don’t break anything, you should get this wad of cash back when you move out.Party time!

When it comes to looks, keep the place “reasonably” clean, you need to throw rubbish and rat-attracting food scraps out, and try not to draw on the walls. Also, as soon as something breaks, e.g. a window, tell the landlord and they will fi x it. It’s the landlord’s responsibly to make sure the wiring, plumbing etc are ok, so hit them up if it’s not, or talk to the DBH.

The landlord has to tell you if they plan on coming around. They are allowed to inspect the property once every four weeks between the hours of 8am and 7pm. They must tellyou 48 hours before if they do an inspection, and if they need to come and fi x something, they have to give you 24 hours notice.

When it’s time to move on, if you are on a periodic tenancy, you have to give 21 days notice, and the landlord has to give you at least 90 days notice, or 42 days if the property has been sold/the landlord wants to move in. You can’t give notice when it is fi xed term, and vice versa.

The Department of Building and Housing have many more good tips and information on surviving in the renting world. Check out www.dbh.govt.nz for them.

What has been the most outrageous thing you have had your audience do?A man having a baby rates pretty high but probably the most outrageous was when I had a female cabinet minister in the audience of a conference I was performing at, and I told a male member of my group that she was a prostitute and he should ask her prices and what she did. Caused more than a few eyebrows to rise and I probably won’t do that again!

How do you get people to volunteer to be hypnotised? There are always people in any audience who wish to try it.... it’s really not that diffi cult.

Does it work for everyone? You cannot hypnotise anyone that doesn’t want to be and some folk take a long time to go into the deep relaxed state, so in a performance situation I only use those I can get under within a few minutes... otherwise it is too boring for the audience.

What is the key to a successful performance?I guess being a bit of a showman really. A hypnotism show depends mainly on the imagination of the hypnotised subjects but the hypnotist is a little like a movie director and a comedian combined. You need to be able to keep the attention of the audience from the beginning and carry that through a couple of hours.

What should Unitec students expect fromyour show? The unexpected ... with a hell of a lot of laughter.

EVER WANTED TO BE HYPNOTISED, TO DO THINGS YOU WOULD NOT EVER DREAM OF DOING? THEN GUY CATER IS YOUR MAN. GUY IS A FULLY TRAINED AND QUALIFIED HYPNOTIST, AS WELL AS A STAND-UP COMEDIAN. HE’S PERFORMED ALL OVER NEW ZEALAND AND AROUND THE WORLD, LULLING PEOPLE INTO A HYPNOTIC STATE FOR THE ENTERTAINMENT OF THEIR PEERS, AND HE’S BRINGING IT ALL TO UNITEC!

You’ve performed in Las Vegas recently, how do audiences there differ to here?American audiences (not only in Vegas) are wonderful... they want to have a good time and are not judgemental until you perform... they act as if you are great until you prove otherwise. New Zealand audiences are more reserved and wait to see what you are like. As soon as you are introduced in The States, the audiences are hooting and hollering. It is always a fantastic thing for a performer.

What attracted you to doing comedy hypnosis inthe fi rst place?I qualifi ed as a Clinical Hypnotherapist and worked for a while in a clinic in Auckland but found it a miserable, boring occupation. Sure, I may have helped a few people but I hated it. I have always performed comedy (have done and still do stand-up) and so started the show and found it was just what I needed and audiences seem to love it... so that has been my main occupation for nearly 30 years. I consider myself to be one of the luckiest people in New Zealand to have a job that I just can’t wait to do..... and it is better than working for a living!

to steer clear of anything too greasy or sugary, you’ll get your sugar fi x from the booze, and will probably end your night with greasy food anyway. Secondly, try to limit yourself to one sort of alcohol, be in white spirits, beer or wine. Stick to the rhyme, ”beer before liquor, never been sicker,” while there isn’t any evidence that proves mixing equals barfi ng, if you drink milky liqueurs followed by red wine, the churning in your stomach will not just be your imagination.

Thirdly, drink water, water, water. Your body needs water to survive, the sugar in alcohol and fi zzy drink, or caffeine if you are drinking energy drinks, will dehydrate you. Water fi xes this so try and match at least every second glass of alcohol with a glass of water. When the night is over, either successful or not, it’s time to start thinking about tomorrow. You have a few options.

Eat bread to soak up the booze, any kind will do, but wholegrain is preferred.

Tertiary education is often symbiotic with

excessive drinking, but this comes at a

cost to the body and the mind, namely in

the form of a hangover.

So, here are some tips so you can still

drink to excess this year (though this does

not come recommended) and not kill your

body too much in the process.

Firstly, eat before you drink. If you are worried about your weight then you shouldn’t be drinking anyway so that knocks that excuse out.

Obviously you don’t want to eat so much that booze will only make spewing inevitable, but a comfortable balance is essential to keep you going all night. This meal has to be nutritious, high in carbs and vitamins, such as pasta with vegetables, or a barbeque meal also works well. Try

If someone has really overdone it on the booze, keep this in mind:

Alcohol poisoning is not fun.It causes parts of the brain to shut down which can be deadly. Symptoms include very slow breathing, unconsciousness, or cold, clammy skin.

If this happens to you, hopefully someone else will know what to do, but if you are left to your own devices, best bet is to call an ambulance. If you are in charge of someone else, put them in the recovery position, loosen restrictive clothing so they can breathe, clear the mouth of vomit and keep them warm, and if they do stop breathing, CPR. Keep your sick friend upright when they vomit, so they won’t choke on their chuck. If you think they can sleep off this excess, put them to bed in the recovery position. Body and head on the side, with a pillow behind so they can’t lie back and choke. Make sure you check on them frequently and wake them regularly. You don’t want to wake up with a dead corpse in the house. If they can’t be woken it’s time to call an ambulance.

While sculling that water, knock back a Panadol or Nurofen before sleeping. Then, set your alarm to wake up an hour before you need to, and take another pill, then, when you get up, another pill down the hatch.

Berocca before bed also works a treat, or drink a Powerade Blue, or any vitamin enhanced sports drink, like Mi Zone or Fifty Cent’s Vitamin Water.

Hopefully you followed these tips so the next day is not too severe, but to replenish your liver and brain, the day after must include copious amounts of water, fresh fruit, trash TV, sleeping, more sports drinks and carbs, such as bread or fries to soak up the remains of last night.

Hope it was worth it!

Best advice: watch what you and your friends drink, hospital waiting rooms are the worse way to end your night.

Also playing to 7000 peeps on the main stage at Highlife Matakana for New Years Eve and having some of them singing our songs wasn’t too bad either. What are you working on at the moment, and what is planned for this year?We are currently in the middle of mixing our new album, we will be dropping a new single fairly soon in March and look at releasing our second album in the second half of the year. In between we will be busy practicing, writing new material, gigging, shooting videos and touring both all around NZ and a couple times in Australia.

You are opening for the Black Seeds, how do you plan on getting the party started?Couple of Funk Bombs should do the trick.

What should we expect from your orientation show?An HOUR OF POWER!

What is essential to you to make a good summer? An Attitude of Gratitude (and a couple cold beers!)

OPENING FOR THE BLACK SEEDS IS AUCKLAND BAND, TAHUNA BREAKS. THIS YEAR IS GOING TO BE ALL ABOUT WORKING HARD FOR TAHUNA BREAKS AS THEY HAVE SOME MAJOR FESTIVAL APPEARANCES TO LOOK FORWARD TO, AS WELL AS TOURING AUSTRALIA AGAIN, AND A SECOND ALBUM DUE OUT LATER IN THE YEAR.

What have been your highlights of summerto date?Recording our second album in Wellington with Dr Lee Pebble in late November/early December last year. It felt great to fi nally relieve ourselves of all these musical ideas we had accumulated over the last year or so and put them together in the studio.

We played a gig at the Piha Surf Club just before New Years- it’s always a special highlight for us to play out there because that’s where we did a lot of our “learning” in the early days of this band, and you know it’s summer when you’re at the beach.
