Christian theology is centred on the three-ness of the one true God’s inner being. The Holy Trinity which we contemplate on this Trinity Sunday – is a mystery upon which and in which we are invited to dwell, not to solve as if it were a puzzle. And it is hard. But when we do stop to reflect, one thing we can notice is the fruitfulness and expansiveness of ‘three-ness’ when compared to the closed possessiveness of ‘two-ness’ – and if God is Three in One, then that might explain the fact that what we experience of God has the quality of expansiveness and creativeness: the beauty of his creation and the love that flows from him. We need to lose ourselves in wonder and contemplation in the face of this mystery of God’s nature – which is why it is important to worship and pray as we think about God. Incidentally, the Brexit negotiations are about to start. I’m struck by the fact that there are two possibilities: (a) that we may get caught up in a dyadic conversation with the EU (“We/you want…”, “We/you don’t want…”) – or (b) that something more generative and creative might be possible if the two parties keep in mind and view a ‘third’ place, ‘what the world or the future needs’ and what we might choose in service of that. If we adopt this second approach, a whole range of creative possibilities opens up as the two ‘sides’ engage the third position and create solutions that are in service of a world beyond. Creativity flowing outwards, not just between… That might give the tone Brexit negotiations more of a godly quality than I fear they may otherwise have! Take time to still yourself. Breathe. Imagine yourself faced with someone different from you, someone with whom you disagree or whose lifestyle is unlike your own. Can you think of someone? It should be a real person – but it could be a colleague, a friend or a family member. Ask yourself: what do you think? What do you feel? How will the conversation - which must inevitably begin - start? What will you say? What will you feel as you speak? Dyadic conversations (which is to say conversations between two positions) inevitably have a similar feel. “I want..”, “I think…”, “I don’t want…”, “You are..”. They ping back and forth like a game of table tennis and as they become more energetic the world around feels like it falls away. We become the more focused on the other. We become blinkered. We want to win, or conquer, or to possess, or be possessed. Now imagine you standing beside the same person who is different from you. In the distance is a third point. That point represents somewhere beyond the two of you. You stand looking together at that point. What is the nature of the conversation now? How does it feel? What are the questions you find yourself asking? Perhaps “What can we…?”, “I wonder what…?”, “What is needed by…?”. Notice that the conversation in this place with a third position present is more informed by curiosity, more expansive, more engaging, more co-creative. That is the difference between the dyadic and the triadic – call it the power of three. He is a fine preacher and I greatly look forward to welcoming my old friend to St Paul’s next Sunday.
