WO: Interesting, I had heard the fall and winter in Nanaimo offered a higher quality dive experience...

SOS: Fall and Winter in Nanaimo is outstanding but Spring and Summer also offer an excellent experi-ence in terms of seeing the various life cycles in the marine environment.

WO: So you can dive year round in Nanaimo?

SOS: Yup! 12 months a year!

WO: What age ranges do you see getting into the sport and where do you dive in Nanaimo?

SOS: We see everyone from teens to seniors, men, women, couples...you name it. In Nanaimo we gen-erally set out diving from Finn Beach at Neck Point.

WO: Is diving an expensive sport?

SOS: Not really, we can get you started for around $400 for you lessons including your use of our gear.

WO: What can you tell me about the local diving community?

SOS: Well - I can tell you that we have a lot of fun...we do a “Haunted Dive” around Hallowe’en and we are holding our 7th annual “Poker Dive” this Septem-ber which is a ton of fun and a great way for our new members to really feel part of the diving community.

WO: Poker? Really? How does that work underwater??

SOS: (Laughs) Well, the divers dive for poker cards under water and exchange them for real cards and get entered in a draw to win a cash jackpot! It’s a blast and so much fun for everyone - smiles all around.

SINK OR SWIM SCUBAWhats On Digest Nanaimo knew a bit about the great diving opportunities in Nanaimo. But after speaking with Ray & Shelagh Richer from Nanaimo’s Sink or Swim Scuba (next to Smokin’ Georges BBQ on Mostar and Boban) we really had our eyes opened.

Besides being warm and really down to earth Ray & Shelagh Richer proved to be a wealth of knowledge on everything from scuba and snorkeling gear to many other products and accessories.

WO: How long have you been in the Scuba diving business?

SOS: We have been avid divers for 17 years. We are both from the retail world (in our previous working lives). Seven years ago we opened SOS Scuba and never looked back.

WO: What is so unique about Scuba Diving here in the Nanaimo area?

SOS: Vancouver Island is ranked very, very high in North America for diving for a number of reasons and particularly because of the easy shore access, the health of reefs, and the abundance of life.

WO: Really! Well that’s yet another way to promote Nanaimo as a tourism destination! Is there a particularly good time to get into Scuba Diving for anyone who may be reading this that’s thinking of ‘diving in’?

SOS: Excellent question but re-ally it’s anytime is a great time to learn to dive.

WhatsOnhomesing floors is much easier if you take it into consid-eration from the very beginning.

Blocking the NoiseSoundproofing floors is not a complicated idea. You just need something between the hard floor-ing and the rest of the house to absorb noise. There are many different options for materials to place between the floor and the sub-floor to ac-complish this.

Cork is very good at absorbing noise, and it’s being looked at with new interest lately as a more envi-ronmentally friendly form of soundproofing your office and home floors. You’ll only need a very thin layer, since cork is a very dense substance. This thin layer will be laid first, and then you will install the sub-floor and finally the hardwood.

If you’ve ever looked up in a school, office build-ing or hospital, you’re already familiar with acoustic tiles. These panels were designed to dull echoes, and this is why they’re popular in large,

If you’ve ever had to listen to children, pets or household members making a lot of noise when all you wanted was peace and quiet, you already know the importance of soundproofing floors. If you have an older home, you probably deal with this regularly. In years past, people weren’t as concerned with soundproofing as they are now. Lucky for today’s homeowners, there are now many different options and methods for soundproofing floors.

Changing the Flooring ItselfIt’s no secret that carpet is much quieter than tile or hardwood. However, since hardwood floors are the most infamous floors for causing annoy-ing echoes and heavy footsteps, here we’ll focus on hardwood floors.

Installing a new hardwood floor is the best time to think about soundproofing floors. Ask your retailer or contractor about the sound ratings of different species of wood and different manu-factured wood flooring materials. Soundproof-

open spaces. However, they also make an excel-lent for soundproofing floors! Simply install them as you would cork, making allowances for the differences in thickness.

There are many different options for sound-proofing floors, with something for every taste and budget. Do your research, and decide which options is right for you. Once the work is done, you’ll get to enjoy a beautiful floor without the constant annoyance of excess noise.

Simon Fraser travelled with more than 20 French Canadians on a series of voyages that resulted in a number of forts built for the Montreal-based Northwest Company. Thus, in the 1850s, francophones made up more than 60 per cent of the European population in British Columbia.

It is also in the 1850s that historical accounts first mention French Canadian residents of Nanaimo. The first permanent structure to be built in the Harbour City was the Bastion. Built between 1853 and 1855, two French Canadian axemen, working alongside a group of Snuneymuxw, hand cut logs, using axes and adzes to hew the 16-foot timbers. The timbers of the octagonal, 36-foot-high bastion were secured with wooden pegs using a method developed by French Canadians called poteau-sur-sole. Nanaimo Museum reports that the building remains 90 per cent original.

French Canadian pioneers were essential in the establishment of the logging industry and the development of communities on Vancouver Island as well. French Canadian voyageurs established successful commercial transportation by canoe, carrying both passengers and cargo, between Nanaimo and Victoria.

Incorporated in 1978, L¹Association des francophones de Nanaimo has chosen to include the Bastion in its logo to honour our city. We are proud of the French Canadian contributions in the development of Nanaimo. Join us in celebrating French Canadian history and joie de vivre at the Maple Sugar Festival du Sucre d’Érable every February in la belle ville de Nanaimo!

CELEBRATING NANAIMO’SFRANCOPHONE HISTORYThere is a long historical association of French Canadian voyageurs with the exploration and development of Canada. The voyageur (French for “traveller”) travelled by canoe. Alexander Mackenzie, accompanied by six French Canadian voyageurs, crossed the Rocky Mountains, arriving in Bella Coola on July 22, 1793.

French Canadian pioneers were essential in the establishment of the

logging industry and the development of communities on Vancouver Island

PET TIPHere’s the scenario...you have a four-year-old Lab that loves going for walks, loves going to the lake, and you have decided to start running with her. That’s great! She will love it. Dogs are built to run - they are much better at it than we are and they don’t tend to tire as quickly as we do.

So. Here’s your girl, you want to start running with her but you notice she doesn’t look as slim as she did when she was a year old. The first thing you should do is get her body condition score assessed and ensure that she isn’t carrying excessive amounts of weight. Don’t rely on how you see her. It’s unfortunate, but most of us have a skewed view of weight in dogs. We see the happy Lab that looks like a coffee table and assume that Labs should look like that. I have certainly had clients come in petrified that their dog is underweight because someone at the dog park pointed it out. When I examine the dog...she looks great. She’s in perfect body condition and not carrying any extra weight around, contrary to what her owner had heard from a friend or someone at the dog park.

Question: How do you know if your dog is in a good body condition? There are a lot of methods out there...but the easiest way is to get your hands on them. Feel over their ribs - the ribs start at the spine and curve around to meet on the chest. You want to get your hands where the ribs curve the most, past the back muscles and coming down the sides. At this point there are no major muscle groups so there should be skin and ribs. Anything extra is just that...extra! If you can’t feel ribs then there is a lot of extra weight there. And don’t fool yourself...I know my own parents could “feel ribs” on their cat that was so overweight that her stomach touched the ground as she was walking. On the opposite end of the scale, you don’t want their ribs to be showing. This can take a little getting used to, and finding the right spot on your dog’s body might be difficult as well. If you aren’t sure, most veterinary clinics will do body condition scoring for minimal or no cost, and some have nutritional consultations to review what your friend is eating and what her activity level is to ensure she is getting the right amount of food.

Being overweight doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t run with your dog. It just means that you have to take

Written Dr. Julie Lamb Applecross Veterinary Hospital

it a bit slower with her - you just have to start her off a little slower until she gets her running legs under her. Even if she’s in good body condition, if she’s less than 2 years old she, can’t go for long distances, and if she hasn’t really run very much in the past, she will still need time to get used to longer distances. However, you will notice that she will probably get used to it much faster than you or I would!

Next month we will discuss injuries that can occur while running with your dog, how you can prevent them, and what to do if they happen.

WHAT IS STRENGTH TRAINING?Strength training by definition: “Is a type of physical exercise specializing in the use of resistance to induce muscular contraction which builds the strength, anaerobic endurance, and size of skeletal muscles.”

Who would strength training benefit? Strength training is beneficial for all people it helps keep your muscles strong, thus preventing atrophy (muscle loss). In both women and men prevents bone loss and in some cases builds bone density.

As we age we begin to lose both bone density and muscle. If we were to exercise using external load (e.i. weights) we can prevent both. Daily strength activities have proven to increase muscle; thus improving the strength of your metabolism. Keeping you slimmer, stronger and either improving bone density or preventing bone loss.

If you like to run and have been struggling to increase your mile pace or need a boost in short sprint speed for the final kick, strength training is the answer. Athletes in endurance sports such as swimming, cycling, rowing, or skiing cross-country will also benefit from strength training.

So if you decided to include strength training to your everyday lifestyle. I would like to

No one buys just one item on their credit card... that one item is lost in the mix and they don’t realize how long or how much

they have paid for it.

You get to buy something and only have to pay for 3% of it this month; that makes it so much more affordable, right?! It all seems too good to be true so let’s take a look at a couple of scenarios and see if it is:

You bought a $4000 flat screen TV on your bank credit card at 19.9% and faithfully made your monthly 3% minimum payments. After 43 months you would have made just over $4000 in payments - the TV would be outdated BUT you’d still owe over $2,200! Ten years later, in 2027, you would have paid for your TV a second time and STILL OWE over $400. Fast forward to 2046 - you’re retired and so, finally, is the debt for that darn TV!

What if instead of the bank credit card you decided to use the store credit card with the 29.9% interest rate to buy the same TV? In a mere 3 years you’d have made over $4000 in payments for your TV and you wouldn’t even have paid off $700 of the debt. Three years and 9 months later your TV’s been paid for twice and you haven’t even paid down half of the debt. Around the 12 year mark you pay for your TV a third time! Somewhere in the distant future your grandchild pays off your debt - the TV has been paid for almost six times.

No one buys just one item on their credit card, they use them regularly so the cost

A transmission allows you to move your vehicle forwards and backwards at different speeds. For car owners, transmission failure can be a complete nightmare, costing thousands of dollars to fix or replace.

Slipping is a warning sign. This is usually one of the more common signs of transmission failure. You will know if there is a slippage problem if you try to accelerate from a stopped position. Vehicles with normal functioning transmissions allow for a smooth acceleration without hesitation, however a vehicle that may be experiencing a transmission problem would slow down this acceleration process and at the same time your vehicle’s RPM spikes up.

Surging-when driving your car at steady speeds, you should never notice any type of jerking movements. Bad transmissions usually cause vehicles to surge or lurch ahead.

Any Type of Burning Odor-a burning smell can be many things, and this includes your transmission. A burning odor coming from your transmission fluid means the fluid has broken down.

Dashboard Lights-your dashboard is your friend and usually (not all the time) if your vehicle is having a problem a warning light will come on to alert you.

The transmission is a critical component of overall vehicle operation and without it you would not be able to drive your car.

is a proud sponsor of the Canadian Cancer Society Relay For Life. Date: Friday June 14 - 15 Location: NDSS Rotary Bowl Time: 7pm to 7am

The event is more than just a fundraiser. It is an opportunity to get together with family and friends and celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost to cancer, and fight back in the hope of finding a cure for this terrible disease.

Relay is fun, fulfilling, and your participation gives strength to our mission to eradicate cancer. Walk with us in this inspirational 12 to 24 hour event as we come together and fight to make cancer history. There will be laughter and fun, joy and sorrow but mostly, conviction that cancer can be kicked out of our lives and communities ó if we act together.

Donations to Relay For Life make it possible for the Canadian Cancer Society to invest in life saving cancer research, lead crucial cancer prevention initiatives and deliver caring practical and personal support to people living with cancer.
