There may be a generational divide separating them but it took only a small sample of modern technology to bring them together.

A Grade 6 class from Monterey middle school has been making a regular trek to the Monterey Recreation Centre to work with members of the seniors computer club.

A recent donation has allowed the computer club to purchase eight IPads.

“We decided we would have three sessions with the students, with the seniors and children working together,” said Ena Cooke, president of Monterey Centre and the computer club.

She said learning to operate the IPads had been a bit of a struggle for some club members and the students just seem to have a knack for the technology.

“Boy did they show us things,” said Cooke. “They even gave us homework.”

And the students enjoyed playing teacher for a day.“It’s fun showing people how to use these things

because they can see what the new generation is like,” said 11-year-old Jenny Hodge.

Computer club member Arlene Grbavec said while she has an IPad at home, she has mainly used her computer rather than learn the different operating procedures.

“I do have an IPad but I didn’t know how to do these things that they’re teaching us,” she said “And they’re such a lovely group of kids.”

While the IPads may represent the latest technology for some of the club members, the students see them as an ordinary part of their day-to-day lives.

“I have had the iPad for a long time and it’s real interesting to see how people learn to use the different apps,” said 11-year-old Minh-Vy Ly.

The relationship between members of the Monterey Centre and the middle school students began last year when Lana Rud brought her Grade 6 class to work with the crafts club.

“It was about connecting seniors with the kids,” said Rud. “We just wanted to be more of a community. It’s about forming relationships across generations.”

She said the students’ aptitude for technology made working together on the IPads a natural fit. The seniors and students have now got together for a pair

of sessions, with the third and final session slated for next week.

“The first day we walked in, everybody was just looking at each other, because they’re strangers plus there’s a huge generation gap. But the minute they start talking about stories, they see the elders here as people,” said Rud.

And while the seniors get some pointers on modern technology, Rud said the students gain a lot from the sessions as well.

“The fact that they have something they can share builds their self-esteem and confidence,” she said. “I hope when they see these people on the street they’ll stop to say ‘Hello, how are you.’ This is just a vehicle for something bigger.”

Oak Bay seniors concerned with aging at home

Seniors are concerned about aging in place and health care in general, says Victoria MP Murray Rankin after a jam-packed session at Monterey Recreation.

“I thought it was a really good discussion,” said Rankin, official opposition critic for health and deputy critic for national revenue.

Rankin says he’s been told he has the second most active riding based on things such as correspondence and all-candidates meetings, so he wasn’t overly surprised about the level of discussion.

“Some of the questions were extraordinarily thoughtful,” Rankin said.

“The main concern people had was the uncertainty about what’s going to happen to them in the last years of their life. They want to age with dignity. There were younger people there who were saying ‘what about the squeeze generation?’”

He was to appear with the NDP’s seniors’ critic, Irene Mathyssen of London, Ont.,

but she was fogged in at the airport so he took the reins on the session focused on aging in general.

“The most poignant slide that I showed was the one that showed by 2036 the number of people over 65 in Canada is

going to double because of us Baby Boomers getting old,” said Rankin. “We have to take this on, we have to figure it out. … The message I had to get across was we don’t have a national strategy on aging … on end-of-life care.”

Earlier this month the

Supreme Court of Canada tasked the federal government with creating a plan to address medically assisted dying.

“That is only part of the picture. The main thing is people don’t have quality palliative care,” Rankin said.

Here in Victoria we have good hospice care, he said, but that’s something that isn’t true across the nation.

“I proposed we study the palliative and end-of-life care in Canada,” Rankin said.

The NDP propose both a national aging strategy and national childcare strategy.

“You’re healthier if you’re aging at home,” Rankin said.

The cost of keeping a person in a hospital bed versus having somebody aging at home are “ridiculously different,” he said.

Comparatively, a hospital stay is $1,200 or more per day; a long-term care facility several hundred dollars a day; while a stay at home: “That might be a few dollars a day, and people are happier at home,” he said.

Younger people are thinking ahead to this “grey tsunami as it’s called” he added.

When Rankin is out knocking on doors in Oak Bay, something he’s been doing this month, similar topics arise.

“If they’re seniors they’re worried about what’s going to happen when they can no longer live in their homes,” he said.

Younger people are not necessarily going to have the income security in old age unless we fix it, he added, noting the old age security changes that boost the eligibility age from 65 to 67 are unfair.

A pair of public sessions proved positive last week as Oak Bay considers moving away from its fixed floor area model.

After an extensive review of zoning bylaw regulations that govern single-family dwellings on residential lots zoned RS-4 and RS-5, Oak Bay is considering changes to the allowable floor area, massing controls, setbacks and other guidelines that impact how homes may be built or renovated.

The current proposal is to go back to a similar model from before changes were made in 2007 to how floor area is derived. Protecting heritage homes, while allowing for changes within those homes was a major instigator of the bylaw review.

“The old bylaw just didn’t really allow for flexibility to renovate historical homes,” said Coun. Kevin Murdoch, who served as

chair of the committee struck to address floor area ratio concerns in Oak Bay.

The series of 14 recommendations were presented to the public in a pair of sessions led by Murdoch and staff last week.

“It was walking through the logic, why we came to these different things and how. To explain it you have to tell the story of how we came to it,” Murdoch said. “People had a very positive response, nobody stood up and said ‘this is the wrong direction’.”

One key recommendation is the change from a fixed floor area model to a floor area ratio model, with that ratio set at 0.4 to 1.0, including accessory buildings.

Another change would see “low” decks not included in the floor area but included in lot coverage calculation. Decks higher than 1.2m above natural grade count toward both gross floor area and lot coverage. Patio space of landscaping and

decks lower than 0.6 metres do not count toward either.

“Oak Bay is very unique in this. Oak Bay has always counted decks as floor area,” Murdoch said.

Among the recommended modifications to the current practice: set total lot coverage to 30 per cent; include accessory buildings in the lot coverage calculation; and limit accessory buildings to a maximum of seven per cent of the lot.

They would keep building heights, roof height and occupiable heights the same as the current bylaw with some adjustments. Definitions of heights would be updated to clarify regulations, particularly with non-traditional designs; If a single-storey-designated lot is allowed, provide unique building, roof, and occupiable height regulations for those; and a few general improvement of definitions and inclusion of diagrams to offer better clarity in the bylaws.

That was one of the things that came out early on from the professional contingent, Murdoch said. Knowing the clear boundaries and expectations was the first thing sought by those in the development and building business during previous input sessions.

Two sessions provided a base for the suggested changes. One targeted professionals such as planners, developers and architects, while the second was geared for the general public interested in house sizes, allowable floor area, allowable site coverage, streetscapes and other aspects of residential properties. Comments from those sessions were used to help craft a draft report of potential regulation changes.

In similar fashion, this draft report and public discussion will return to council for potential changes to the zoning bylaws.

Students at the University of Victoria and Camosun College will soon have a voice at the commission overseeing local B.C. Transit service.

The Victoria Regional Transit Commission – which determines route configurations, sets fares and approves transit capital spending – voted on Feb. 18 to give student societies from both schools one non-voting seat. The VRTC is currently made up of elected politicians from Saanich, Victoria and alternating members from Esquimalt-Oak Bay and both the Peninsula and West Shore communities.

“We went with a non-voting seat because a voting seat would require a change in legislation around regional transit commissions. That would have taken some time and lobbying,” said Greg Atkinson, UVic Student Society director of external relations. Post-secondary students pay for unlimited bus access each semester through B.C. Transit’s U-Pass program.

Atkinson said the commission seat will be filled on a rotating basis with a member from Camosun’s student society beginning at the VRTC’s June 16 meeting. The two student societies represent about 36,000 undergraduate students across Greater Victoria.

“Our seat means we get agendas,

budgets, reports beforehand so we know what to expect as issues come forward,” Atkinson said.

The motion was brought forward by Saanich Mayor Richard Atwell and seconded by Esquimalt Mayor Barb Desjardins. Atwell vowed last October he would push for VRTC student society representation if elected to office.

Desjardins said the vote was unanimous after students spent the past few months lobbying VRTC members.

“I think it’s a wonderful idea. What we’ve done is approve for them to sit at the table under the abilities we have, but the second step is to look at a legislative change at the provincial level,” Desjardins said.


YES Awards in need of cash infusion

“I believe other municipalities are looking at our model and saying ‘that’s not a bad way to celebrate youth in our community’,” Braithwaite said. “It’s nice to be one of the pioneers of something that celebrates

youth and business and seniors all at once,”

She created the Young Exceptional Star Awards, which marks its eighth year in 2015, during her previous term on council. It was a way to recognize youth, bring in business to help with that recognition, and invite the seniors’ group leadership to remind them of good works by youth in the community.

“I wanted to make sure the emphasis of the awards was not athletics or academics,” said Braithwaite, who now co-chairs the awards with Coun. Michelle Kirby. “It’s about giving back to the

community in any way.” The 2015 YES Awards are

May 13, and are in need of a little help to make them shine.

One of the business connections of the awards is sponsorship. For $150, a business helps cover the physical award and recognition dinner for parents and sponsors.

“We’ll probably give out 10 to 12 awards, so we wouldn’t have more than 10-12 sponsors,” Braithwaite said.

There are also other groups, for example Kiwanis, who might donate enough to provide two awards and

some extras. In the past kids have received a token such as flowers and chocolates.

The nominations too are open, to kids who physically live or attend school within the boundaries of Oak Bay.

“It is Oak Bay youth that we’re celebrating,” Braithwaite said. “Most of our nominations come from teachers or group leaders, but anybody can nominate.”

Cairine Green topped spending in Oak Bay during November’s municipal election, doling out $11,767.23 during her campaign according to her campaign financing disclosure statement.

I was disappointed to see DeerSafe Victoria’s rather graphic ad in your Feb 20 edition.

My seven-year-old saw the ad first (he likes to keep up on the news), and I had to tell him yes, that appears to be a dead deer in the back of that truck. In discussing this picture with my son, I came to the realization that only in Vancouver Island’s most affluent community could we “afford” to have this debate.

As a social worker in the downtown core I am saddened that the deer issue has had such a spotlight for so long when there are real social issues in our community.

I don’t enjoy the deer in my yard, but I really don’t like seeing money and time spent on this issue any longer.

DeerSafe Victoria, you appear to have some money and time. What if you donated what this ad cost to Our Place or The Sandy Merriman House? What if your protest signs alerted us to the issue of elder abuse or domestic violence instead? Now those are some real issues to give your attention to.

Speeding is a problemAs a newcomer to Oak Bay, I am

really dismayed by the speeds people drive in this town, especially on Cedar Hill X-Road and Cadboro Bay Road.

My apartment overlooks Cadboro Bay Road, and in the morning the speeds are way above the limit. In the year I have lived here I have not seen any police enforcement except by Willows school and that is rare.

about cars hitting deer. I think Oak Bay does not have a deer problem. Oak Bay has a speeding problem and speed limits must be enforced.

The LePages argue that trapping of deer is “not fair” and is “cruel”. Perhaps so, but the LePages are hunters themselves who doubtless sometimes wound, but fail to kill, an animal, leading perhaps to a slow and agonising death.

The cull is a divisive topic, and many people – myself included – feel uncomfortable with all the options. Nevertheless, to be told by someone who hunts that a cull is “unfair” is a considerable irony.

of the deer has had the benefit of causing the community to consider the well-being of sentient animals that are affected by our actions. Until about two generations ago this would have been a normal part of our lives as it still is in many countries such as Kenya and Outer Mongolia.

So let us not just focus on the deer and our pets but also on the approximately 100 animals, kept in horrific conditions every moment of their lives, that most meat eaters consume annually. Let us also wonder why we still tolerate the sale

of pate foie gras in this community, which necessitates ducks being force fed until they have liver disease.

A lot of good could come from the problem of the deer.

No need for secrecyWhat is the mayor of Oak Bay

hiding? From day one of his quest for a cull the whole procedure has been shrouded in mystery, and whenever facts did emerge they were distorted and wrong.

The cull is supposed to have started but to continue in this veil of secrecy, he will not say when, where or if. And then to add further to this clandestine operation, the trappers have been told to note the description of any persons who might be observing and the licence plate number of their vehicles, and to report it to the police.

Property transfer taxtoo hard to pass up

Realtors, prospective home buyers and sellers, and others can stop hoping that B.C.’s property transfer tax (PTT) will be discontinued.

It’s never going to happen. The reason? It’s a major cash cow for the provincial government, needed to balance the budget and there’s nowhere else to raise that large chunk of cash without raising personal and corporate income taxes, and that’s not on for the BC Liberals.

Premier Christy Clark is proud of what she says is the country’s lowest tax rate so this kind of special tax, that only hits buyers of property, is not going away anytime soon, even though, as Clark herself says, it’s a drag on the economy.

Here’s how it shakes down: the PTT consists of one per cent charged on the first $200,000 of a property’s value and two per cent after that. That means for a $600,000 house, $10,000 is due every time it changes hands.

This handy calculation is not just a painful hit to the pocket book when purchasing a home — it’s a major source of revenue, generating $1.04 billion in 2014.

Don’t think that’s a lot of cash? Well, consider that the PTT raises significantly more than forestry — formerly the province’s No. 1 industry — which only brings in about $757 million; or natural gas royalties, which at $542 million, generate about half of what the PTT does.

These revenue numbers are interesting for another reason: They show how important real estate is to B.C.’s ongoing financial stability. Without a strong real estate market, helped, no doubt, by record-low interest rates, the provincial coffers would be much poorer.

The province also benefits from rising property values and while there are exemptions for family transfers and first-time home buyers, it appears the property transfer tax is a necessary evil that raises millions to cover basic provincial services. A strong real estate industry and increased property values, especially in single-family homes, are therefore critical to government budgeting — at least for now.

So unless the much-vaunted LNG industry or another economic sector can provide a windfall, the PTT is here to stay.

Three-part harmonies and hot picking will amp up the atmosphere in the Upstairs Lounge Friday night.

The Roots trio The Sweet Lowdown – Amanda Blied on guitar, Shanti Bremer on banjo and Miriam Sonstenes on fiddle – will perform for their hometown crowd.

“We’ve been to shows there but we’ve never performed at the venue. I’m really happy for Oak Bay that this concert series is going on, it’s wonderful,” said Blied.

On the high from a recent gig for CBC radio show The Vinyl Café, the trio is excited to perform for their loyalest of followers, hometown Greater Victoria fans.

“They’re usually with us from the first note to the last, right there with the stories we’re telling with our music,” Blied said. “When you’re in a new town you win over the audience in ideally the first song or two. They’re with you right from the very first note and that’s a wonderful feeling.”

The Sweet Lowdown’s recent award-winning album, May (Island Roots Album of the Year at Vancouver Island Music Awards) was produced by Adrian Dolan and mastered by Joby Baker. It earned the trio a nomination for Vocal Group of the Year at the 2013 Canadian Folk Music

Awards. The trio’s brand new

album Chasing The Sun is also produced by Dolan and features all original material and has already garnered critical acclaim in North America and the U.K.

“It’s No. 1 in the Folk DJ Charts. It’s been really well received,” Blied said. “We’re

really happy with that.” The Oak Bay crowd will

get a healthy taste of the newest album, released in November.

“It’ll be a mix of songs from all of our albums as well as a couple that aren’t on any albums,” Blied said. “A bunch of the repertoire that we’ve recorded on our new album, we haven’t really performed that much, so we’re excited to perform some of that.”

“We have such a big repertoire now it’s a little difficult to choose, because we love it all.”

Reynolds band joins the orchestra for Longfield’s Fantasia on the English hymn tune Kingsfold. The concert’s military theme is taken up again in Ralph Vaughan Williams’ English Folk Song Suite, which, despite its pastoral-sounding name, was originally penned for a military band. The music incorporates traditional melodies such as Seventeen Come Sunday, My Bonny Boy and John Barleycorn. Capping off the concert will be the wonderful Enigma Variations by Edward Elgar, performed by the GVYO.

Song can sustain during even the most stressful of times, says Don Williams.

It did, in fact, sustain him through three years of on-and-off treatment for prostate cancer.

“I’m a cancer survivor and I have friends who are cancer survivors. The thing that sustained me was I had a mantra … Singing and dancing in the streets,” he said. “I sang that to myself

and to others during my three years of treatment.”

While in conversation with a friend, they were struck by the few degrees of separation of cancer. Almost

everyone knows someone whose life is affected by the disease. With music’s sustaining powers, they decided to put together a concert.

Williams drew on his history as a

singer at the Victoria Conservatory, and several months later I Remember You is set to take the stage Friday, Feb. 27.

The concert in support of the Canadian Cancer Society features baritone Don Williams, mezzo soprano Kiiri Michelsen and Andrew Greenwood on saxophone.

“I have the best jazz pianist in Victoria in Peter Dent,” Williams said. “They’re all giving their time free of charge because of the cancer benefit.”

They’ll take over the sanctuary at the church on Mitchell Street.

“We wanted a venue that wasn’t too huge and it’s a nice tidy

place and we should be able to get 100 people in there… beautiful acoustics,” Williams said.

He anticipates a demographic that will enjoy his repertoire of tried-and-true standards from big names like Nat King Cole, Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra. Of course, I Remember You is in the plan, as are Almost Like Being in Love, Nice Work If You Can Get It, The Way You Look Tonight, It Had to be You and Unforgettable.

I Remember You will be held at 1355 Mitchell St. Doors open at 7 p.m. Admission by suggested donation of $10 at the door.

Oak Bay’s senior boys locked up the city high school basketball championships while the school’s senior girls laid claim to the Island title.

The Bays stopped Belmont 81-50 last week to win the city title.

“They played well, executed well. Belmont played pretty hard but the guys have been playing very well this year,” said coach Chris Franklin.

Liam Finnigan paced the Oak Bay attack in the final game with 25 points.

The Bays now advance to the Island Championships, being held at Mt. Douglas secondary Feb. 26-28.

“We need continued effort, continued concentration, just keep doing what we do,” said Franklin. “The team has had pretty good success keeping to what we’re good at: running, playing good defence and playing hard.”

Oak Bay cruised through the opening rounds of the senior girls Island championships, dismantling Belmont 73-23 and toppling Stelly’s 81-27. But the Breakers were pushed by Claremont in the final before pulling out a 64-44 win.

“Claremont played as well as I’ve seen them play and some of our main people got in foul

trouble so it was just a two-point game at halftime,” said Breakers coach Rob Kinnear, who credited the team’s “perseverance” for the win.

Oak Bay’s Lauren Yearwood was named tournament MVP, while Morgan Roskelley and Sophie de Goede were named first-team all-stars. Andrea Psotka earned a spot on the second-team all-stars.

The hard-fought win in the Island finals is something Kinnear feels will serve them well when they open the provincial championships March 4 in Langley.

“Being challenged in the finals was great for the girls. You never want to breeze into the provincials, you want to be challenged and we were,” he said.

Oak Bay’s junior girls also finished on top of Island basketball.

After convincing wins over Wellington and Qualicum, Oak Bay knocked off Claremont 53-36 in the finals.

Assistant coach Katie Hanson said winning the city championships set up a favourable draw for Oak Bay to reach the finals against Claremont.

“We knew to be successful in that game we had to run our offence properly and really crash the boards for those offensive rebounds and not let them

have any second chances,” said Hanson.

The junior girls now head to the provincial championships March 4-7 at the Langley Events Centre.

The junior boys fell just shy in a pair of attempts to earn a spot at the provincial championships.

Oak Bay opened the Island championships with a 70-58 win over Dover Bay before falling to eventual tournament winners Cowichan 48-47 in the semifinal.

“We had played them three times previously and we’ve beaten them twice,” said Oak Bay coach Jim Pomefroy. “We got down, we made a comeback, we had two or three open looks at the end of the game to win it but couldn’t finish it off.”

The loss dropped Oak Bay to the consolation side, where they needed a win over Brentwood College to earn one of the four Island spots at the provincials.

“We scored with seven seconds to go to go up by one,” said Pomefroy. “They came down and got a shot, missed, but were able to grab the rebound and we fouled them on the rebound. They went to the line with 0.2 seconds left on the clock and made two free throws.”

He said while it was disappointing to end the season with the 44-43 loss, the players still have a long future ahead of them with many moving on to the senior squad next year.

Discovering Iceland and Land Rover’s new sportReykjavik, Iceland.It’s as though we are driving over breakfast cereal.The “crunch, crunch, crunch, crunch” sound of the crisp snow below the all-new 2015 Land Rover Discovery Sport’s cabin is both appetizing and unnerving.The studded tires bite into the slip-pery surface, which calms the nerves but visibility is slim to none – save that illuminated by our headlights – and traction changes after every rotation of the rubbers. Yet, I have confidence in myself, the tires and a vehicle whose DNA stems from a lineage of predecessors born in environments devoid of traction.Though it’s 9:08 a.m., the sun has yet to show itself and a blanket of pitch black envelops the country. To add to the ambiance, Iceland is a place where mythical beings are embedded in its folklore! As we traverse the topography, it’s almost as though one of the Norse gods, or trolls, is looking over us from above and shaking a sifter of powdered sugar. This dusting of snow is a fanciful act of beauty in the dark setting.I can’t see much around me. At all. But I know that one side of the trail we’re navigating is a steep drop off. While I’d love to drift the compact luxury SUV through some fantastic curves on these abandoned roads, now is not the time to try to be a hero. I’ll wait for another opportunity and the absence of a cliff.In 100 metres, we will be turning left onto a street whose name I couldn’t pronounce correctly even if the prize was a large sum of money. Streets in this part of Iceland are not marked per se. We best follow the GPS-based instruction if we want to stay on track.Iceland’s sliver of sunlight per day during the winter

averages about six hours. We’re just about an hour and a half before sunrise.At that time, I’ll better be able to see these capable SUVs and their performance abil-ities. Right now, I’m feeling its four-wheel drive (4WD) system at work. The standard Terrain Response system is set to snow/ice/gravel, and the seat warmers are on full blast.I’m also feeling the comfort and hospitality of its gracefully executed cabin and am enjoying the calm of the interior environ-ment. It might be frigid and rough outside, but not from where I’m sitting.The Discovery Sport will be available with one engine in Canada, and a great one at that. It’s a 2.0L, turbocharged 4-cylinder with 240 horsepower and 250 lb-ft of torque. It’s then matched with a 9-speed automatic transmission whose shifts are as smooth as some of the ice we’re driving upon. It doesn’t feel underpow-

ered yet is relatively humble in power numbers. Regardless, for what most people will do with this, it’s plenty.There’s also room for up to seven passengers (there’s a 5+2 configuration with stadium seating available) and a wading depth of 600mm (24-inches), which we tested out as we crossed a river. Yes, a river. Just don’t open your doors for any reason in the process.Other premium features include six USB out-lets, 829L of cargo space behind the second row seats and an infotainment system that is fairly intuitive to use.Throughout the day, our travels took us over almost every imaginable surface in Iceland: snow, ice, gravel, rocks, rivers, pavement, water and more.When we ended our adventure in Reykjavik, the “tap,

tap, tap, tap” of the studded tires resembled that of a mouse tap-dancing. The pitter-patter over the cobblestone streets meant our day was done, but not without being filled with everlasting memories. Iceland, a country that is hauntingly barren yet its winter beauty suggests a feeling of warmth (along with its geothermal baths and activity.)And the companionship of the Land Rover Discovery Sport only added to the magic of the world’s northern-most capital city. The Land Rover Discovery Sport is set to arrive this spring and has a starting MSRP of $41,490.

Not that long ago, if an all-wheel drive (AWD) vehicle was on a buyer’s shop-ping list, the options were largely limited to SUVs and trucks. Today the automotive landscape has exploded with manufacturers offering many more AWD vehicles. In fact, 48 percent of all vehicles purchased in Canada come with AWD or four-wheel drive (4X4). For Fiat Chrysler Automobiles Can-ada (Formerly Chrysler Canada) the percentage is even higher, at roughly 58 percent. Thanks, in part, to the success of the Jeep brand and the many vehicles sold under that off-road-ready marque. The latest entry, the Jeep Renegade, will be arriving at dealerships around April but just last week I had a chance to drive this small Jeep in classic Cana-dian winter conditions just outside of Montreal.

LooksThe setting for the winter driving pro-gram was at ICAR, an enthusiast’s racing facility built on the abandoned aprons and taxiways of the old Mirabel airport, including a slalom course, road coarse and off-road adventure. The bold orange Renegade instantly jumped out against the howling wind and at-times, whiteout conditions. The Renegade is built in Eu-rope on the same platform that Fiat uses to make the all-new Fiat 500X. This cost sharing, multi-vehicle offensive is what

has helped Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) to be so successful over the past few years. The engineering and design was done in Michigan to insure the Renegade has all the classic Jeep char-acteristics, from the round headlamps and classic Jeep grille, to the trapezoi-dal wheel arches, appropriate ground clearance and overall bold styling. The Renegade is smaller than the Compass and Patriot models in the lineup, helping to promote the red-hot, small crossover segment even further. InsideWith a high seating position and boxy roofline, the Renegade has a lot of headroom and large windows, making

this compact crossover feel open and airy. The dash and surrounding trim is filled with eye-catching touches, like the speaker grilles and air vents that come painted for more panache. The front seats are supportive and provide a nice look down the long hood, making this feel more “trucky” The back seats offer plenty of room in this class and the cargo area is what Jeep calls class leading. Prices start at $19,995 for base Sport model with front wheel drive (FWD) and the first AWD model starts at $25,995. The volume leader will be the North trim with alloy wheels, starting at $27,494 for an AWD version. The problem will be the higher end trims,

like the $31,995 Limited, that look pricy compared to a bigger to a compact SUV, like a Honda CR-V, with a much more powerful engine, vastly bigger interior and a $30,000 AWD starting price.

DriveFCA didn’t just have the Renegade to drive in frozen weather, rather a selec-tion of the seventeen vehicles they offer with AWD or 4X4 capability. They were clear to point out that nine of the twen-ty-six models have AWD available even on the base trim. The Renegade’s base AWD system is a lighter weight active powertrain that can disconnect the rear wheels to save fuel but reconnect them in a fraction of a second if the tempera-ture drops of the windshield wipers are turned on. On dry pavement, the system only needs to detect the slightest wheel slippage to engage the AWD capability. In addition there is a terrain select knob in each model that lets the driver choose between auto, snow, sand, mud and

rocks to alert the Renegades’ traction control, stability control and engine/transmission electronics to keep the Jeep moving in different situations. The ultimate is the AWD system with a low setting for crawling over rocks, some-thing Jeep purists appreciate.

VerdictThe Jeep Renegade follows on the heels of some other stylish compact crossover vehicles like the Kia Soul and Nissan Juke that provide a bit more flair, rather than just practicality. This new Renegade also has the advantage of being equipped with two sophisti-cated AWD systems to keep it ahead of the pack. The base engine is a 1.4L turbo 4-cylinder with 160hp but this model is only available with a 6-speed manual transmission; if the buyer wants and automatic, the larger 180hp 2.4L 4-cylinder is fitted with a class leading 9-speed automatic. There is a whopping $2,990 premium to get the larger engine and automatic on the Sport trim and just $1,495 on the North, excluding the price premium to get AWD. At the end of the day this Jeep has a very attractive exterior and interior and is something fresh in one of the hottest segments in the market. The price can jump very, very quickly if the buyer wants AWD and automatic. Time will tell if buyers will spend the extra to buy the higher end models.

Falcon gymnasts strike gold at meet

Oak Bay gymnast Ava Stewart earned the nod for the Best Choreography award for her floor routine at the Pajama Party Invitational meet in Comox.

Victoria-area athletes from Falcon Gymnastics vaulted to an exceptional weekend of competition to wrap up Canadian Gymnastics Week Feb. 14 and 15, with 14 athletes ranging from Junior Olympic levels 3 to 6 competing for gold.

Madison Chase earned a gold medal on vault in the Junior Olympic 3 Group 1, while Chantelle Turlock received a bronze medal for her floor routine. In Junior Olympic 3 Group 2, Soleia Ouldali earned a silver medal in both the vault and floor events. Ella Kenddler received silver for her efforts on the bars and a bronze for vault.

In the Junior Olympic 6, 12 and under, Karley Telford struck gold on the bars.

For the Junior Olympic 6 athletes, 13 and over, Abby Stamper took home first all around, which included a gold for the floor, a silver for vault and a bronze for bars. Josée Simard earned bronze for vault, silver for beam and bronze in all around. In addition, Leonie Solomons took home the gold for bars.

The recent springlike weather has been a welcome bonus for members of the Oak Bay Garden Club.

The club meets every third Wednesday of the month (except July and August) at the Monterey Recreation Centre.

“It’s just a way to enjoy gardening,” said Rosemary Pollard, a programmer with the club. “It’s to help people who have gardens or balconies get interested in growing flowers and vegetables.”

Budding gardeners can get plenty of ideas during the Victoria Flower Count from March 5 to 11.

During the week, community members from all 13 Greater Victoria municipalities are invited to count flowers and will have their numbers

attributed to their community specifically as well as to the overall total.

While the Oak Bay Garden Club doesn’t take part in the flower count, Pollard said spotting flowers shouldn’t be a problem for participants in Oak Bay.

“So many people have gardens. It’s such a perfect climate for growing,” she said, adding flowers can be seen along the boulevards and in gardens found on just about every street.

“There’s crocus and daffodils and cherry blossoms now.”

Last year, more than 1.3 billion flowers were counted. The record number of blooms counted was in 2010 at 21 billion flowers.

The Raging Grannies were unsuc-cessful in their attempt to get dogs on buses in Victoria, but they are not giving up.

Fran Thoburn and Daphne Taylor collected over 800 signatures on a petition to allow dogs on public tran-sit, which they presented to the Vic-toria Regional Transit Commission.

The VRTC voted it down as a result of complaints received from bus driv-ers and people with allergies.

“Even though we thought the peti-tion we received ... certainly had merit to look into, we just felt the responsible thing at the end of the day was to maintain the current pol-icy,” said Susan Brice, VRTC chair.

Electrical problem blamed for vehicle fireElectrical malfunction is believed to have

likely caused a vehicle fire last weekend on Pentland Road.

The Oak Bay police and fire departments were called around 1 a.m. on Feb. 21 to find a 2003 Ford Escape engulfed in flames. Oak Bay Fire put the blaze out and police spoke with the vehicle’s owner who said the alarm had gone off just five minutes prior to the fire.

The owner had gone outside, physically checked the vehicle and determined there was no problem. Five minutes later the vehicle was a write-off. Initial investigation by the OBFD points to an electrical malfunction as the likely cause of the fire.

An Edmonton man was held in custody after refusing to pay a $1,600 bill at Oak Bay Beach Hotel.

Police were called Feb. 21 around 8:30 p.m. after hotel staff detained a 37-year-old Edmonton man who assured the hotel that his expenses were to be picked up by a government agency.

Staff stopped him when the man was observed leaving the hotel with his bags and still no arrangement for payment had been received. Police found the man pulled similar scams in Alberta and other hotels in Victoria.

Residential break-ins abound

On Feb. 18 a resident of the 2000 block Hampshire Road reported an attempt to get into his home the previous day. The man said when he returned home his deadbolt came apart in pieces as he inserted his key. No entry to the home was gained.

A shed was broken into on Satellite Street and an expensive Cannondale racing bicycle was stolen. The bicycle is described as red with yellow lettering. There is black and yellow tape on the handlebars.

That same day, residents in the 1800 block of Bowker Place returned home after a 24-hour absence to find that their home

had been broken into. The thief or thieves broke a small window to get into the house. A small amount of jewelry was stolen. Forensic identification was called to the scene.

break-in at Victoria Golf Course Feb. 20 after an employee arrived around 4 a.m. to see a male on a BMX leaving the maintenance area.

The suspect is described as wearing a puffy, camouflage jacket and a small, round, black helmet.

A talented artist and educator, Songhees First Nation elder Clarence (Butch) Dick’s biggest passion is mentoring children.

Dick was presented with a Leadership Victoria lifetime achievement award for his work in the community.

Dick, 69, worked as a First Nation art and culture teacher in School District 61 for 25 years before retiring nine years ago.

“I enjoyed the daily challenge,” said Dick.

Sherri Bell, superintendent of School District 61, remembers Dick when she first arrived in the district as the principal of James Bay Community School 18 years ago.

“He worked with the students in my school, so I got to see him as a teacher,” said Bell. “He had such a calming effect on students. Children are at the centre of

everything he does.”After retiring from

teaching, Dick became the education liaison for the Songhees First Nation, working as

the bridge between the school district and the schools and families and students on the Songhees reserve.

Dick said he always tries to encourage youth.

“Lately it’s been trying to have youth recognize

accomplishment and build on accomplishment, self-esteem, identity and confidence,” he said.

Dick said he gets his desire to help children from his mother.

“My father passed away before I was born, so I never really had a father figure,” he said. “My mom was really tough. She brought us up well.”

In all the work he has done with youth and the community, Dick never does it for the recognition or awards. He said the biggest reward for him is having past students remember him and tell him what an impact he had on them.

Besides mentoring youth, Dick also played a key role in the design of the new Songhees Wellness Centre. He spent three years carving totem poles and traditional Coast Salish house posts for the Wellness Centre. He credits the finished building as being one of his biggest

accomplishments, but he is quick to not take all the credit.

“I always emphasize that I designed it, but

“The biggest [reasons] were health-related issues in terms of people with allergies, as well as a strong position from our drivers . . . because it would put them in a situation where they had to make determinations about dogs coming on or not.”

Of over 4,000 public responses, 50.7 per cent said no, 37.8 per

cent said yes and 11.3 per cent said dogs should sometimes be allowed on buses.

Taylor said she is disap-pointed that the policy did not get approved, but she knew it would likely take more convinc-ing.

“I wasn’t thinking that it prob-ably would [go through] right away.”

Thoburn said she does not think all the options have been evaluated.

“I don’t think the [transit] commission people truly con-sidered a way of finding a happy medium,” she said.

The next step will be writing to each of the members of the VRTC and continuing the dia-logue, said Thoburn.

Athletes urged to give field hockey a try

Looking for a new sport? Victoria Junior Field Hockey is hosting a “try field hockey for free” camp, a great way for young athletes age four to 18 to try out the sport for no cost.

Upon arrival, participants will be treated to free gear for the session, along with experienced coaching and plenty of fun. Choose from either March 1 or March 8 from 10 to 11 a.m. on the UVic turf.

Adult field hockey action also fills UVic turf this weekend. Starting on Feb. 28, the Demons and Stellers will kick the day off at 10:30 a.m. followed by the Patriots and Flickers at noon. The Devils and Kestrels will play off following the Patriots game at 3:30 p.m., Lynx 2 and Blue Jays will play at 5 p.m., and the Pirates and Ravens will finish the day off at 9 p.m. The Mariners and Lynx 1 will be the only game in town on Sunday, March 1 at 9 a.m.

Registration for Carnarvon Baseball and Softball is still open for any people looking to sign up for the 2015 spring season. Players from the ages

While spring sports are getting under way, there’s plenty still on the calendar as local winter sports wrap up.

The Victoria Cougars swept the Kerry Park Islanders in four games during the opening round of the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League playoffs. The Cougars will now face the winner of the series between the Saanich Braves and Westshore Wolves in the next round.

High school AAAA basketball playoff action is also under way at Mount Douglas Secondary School with Oak Bay High’s senior boys the local favourites for top spot on the Island. The tournament, with four school teams from the lower Island and three from the upper Island, finishes Feb. 28. The top two Island teams earn a berth to provincials.

Finishing their regular season ranked No. 1 (women) and 2 (men), Camosun hosts the Pac West Provincial

Volleyball Championships Feb. 26 to 28. Coached by Charles Parkinson, the men enter the

competition 18-6 on the season, while the Chris Dahl-coached women’s squad finish 21-3.

With volleyball taking over the PISE gym this weekend, the Camosun Chargers men’s and women’s basketball squads hit the road to take on Squamish’s

Quest (Friday, Feb. 27) and North Van’s Capilano College (Saturday, Feb. 28) in the final games of their regular season. Next weekend (March 5 to 7) brings the PacWest Provincial Basketball Championships hosted by CBC in Abbotsford.

Also on the road, the University of Victoria Vikes women’s basketball team moved ahead in post-season play following a second-half comeback last Saturday to defeat the visiting Calgary Dinos 80-78. The Vikes challenge Thompson Rivers in Kamloops on this weekend (Feb. 27 to March 1) in a best-of-three quarter-final series.

If you have ever purchased or sold a home, you’ve probably met a notary public.

They’re the folks who hold all the legal documents for you to sign at the end of the process.

But, as two notaries public from Salvador Davis & Co. explain, there’s a lot more going on behind the scenes than you might think.

Lisa Ehrlich, a partner in Salva-dor Davis & Co. with Laurie Salva-dor, and Shawna Farmer say from start to finish of a single home sale, the work can last up to three months.

“It’s not as simple as some peo-ple might think it is,” says Farmer. “We collect mortgage documents and information on behalf of real estate agents, lenders, mortgage companies and our clients.”

Notaries, adds Ehrlich, often are the ones who discover builders’ liens against properties, outstand-ing taxes, covenants and other sur-prises that a purchaser might not be aware of.

Ehrlich says many seniors have taken advantage of property tax deferrals – and they might not remember how much money is owing to the municipality. While the purchaser is not on the hook for these outstanding taxes, Farmer says the property title can-not transfer to new owners until it’s paid. It’s all part of the negotia-tion process.

Other non-financial issues, like rights-of-way, mineral rights and building schemes, can be present on a property title. While notaries do not clear those items unless hired to do so, they do compile and help clear financial charges on title during the process of buying or selling a house.

A typical home buying process starts, for notaries, with meeting a

client, asking if they have specific needs and then gathering up all of the legal documents.

The next step involves the real estate agent, lender or broker in order to get the title free and clear of any issues. It’s throughout this process that all disclosures must take place – again, so there are no surprises.

Closing day, “is a big day,” says

Ehrlich. It means buyers are trans-ferring over a lot of money and sellers are receiving it. For many people, she says, it can be the big-gest transaction of their lives.

At this stage, or even earlier, adds Farmer, they like to ask their clients about how they want to hold title.

For couples buying a home, it can be done in two ways: as joint

tenants where both own right of survivorship; or as tenants in com-mon where both parties own a share of the property and upon the death of one, the wishes of their will would be followed.

It’s complex, says Ehrlich, and part of life planning.

To make sure it goes smoothly, Farmer and Ehrlich say people need to trust their notary.
