Residents are asked to dispose of drugs responsibly.
Health Canada, in partnership with Public Safety Canada, Partnership for a Drug Free Canada and the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police are reminding the public to drop off unused prescription and over-the-counter drugs at their local pharmacy leading up to the second annual National Prescription Drug Drop-off day Saturday, May 10.
“We don’t want them to throw them into regular trash, it gets into the water supply, it’s not good for the environment,” said Pharmasave pharmacist Sandi Nelson. “Sometimes (even) people breaking into homes can take them, we don’t want people to take expired medications and we don’t want them in the garbage … for dogs, raccoons and kids.”
Safety concerns around the proliferation of unused prescription drugs prompted the joint initiative for the awareness day beginning in 2013.

When Mohammed Abousaleh looked at his computer screen, he couldn’t believe his eyes.
Confirmation of an $80,000 scholarship to the University of Victoria stared back at him – two weeks later, it still doesn’t seem real.
“When I first saw it I didn’t really believe what I was seeing,” the Grade 12 Oak Bay High student said. “I just sat there (and) looked at the screen, it was a bit overwhelming. It took a little
while to sink in.”As Oak Bay High school’s lone
nominee for the national Schulich Leader Scholarship – awarded to students possessing two of three criteria in outstanding leadership in the community, academic excellence and financial need – the straight-A student said the scholarship will serve as additional motivation to further realize his goals.
“The biggest thing is living up to what it means. You can be awarded for certain things but if you just kind of plateau after that, it doesn’t really mean much,”
Abousaleh said. “You have to keep the momentum going. My whole life has been about self-improvement. I’m always trying to challenge myself more and more and this is going to give me great motivation to do well in university.”
In addition to his academic pedigree, the 18-year-old, who came from Syria when he was six, said it’s important to be a leader outside the classroom as well. He volunteers on student council and in leadership class, as a reading buddy and peer tutor for his fellow students and helps with
community fundraisers including the Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock.
“One of the things I like about this school specifically that hit me hard, was the Cops for Cancer they do at the beginning of every year. The passion I saw at the school was overwhelming, everyone was united and it was something I didn’t really see in a school before,” he said. “This kind of unity was kind of new to me.”

is important, she says.Grade 9 Vic High student Avery Paul, who spent
a year-and-a-half being home schooled, is big on relationships, especially given the way she learns.
“I like to work at my own pace, I have my own specific learning style. I’m really visual and like to work with my hands. I like when a teacher allows me to be flexible with my learning style. That shows they care about their students.”
Tristan Knapp-Fisher, in Grade 12 at Parkland secondary in North Saanich, agrees.
“When you connect (with students), it’s almost like you’re a friend. You can get more of them,” he says. “If (students have) a sense that ‘the teacher really wants to help me,’ they’ll open up a bit. It’s about being a little more human instead of just hav-ing it be your job.”
Students easily perceive when teachers are not entirely present, he adds. “It’s helpful when the student knows (the teacher is) not thinking about things they have to do (later); they’re being pres-ent and actually wanting to help.”
Manuel, who serves as a teacher’s assistant in a learning strategies class, adds that excellent educa-tors have something else that differentiates them from others.
“They’re usually not just a great teacher, they’re usually just a really great person and they’re posi-tive role models.”

Sandi Nelson, a pharmacist at the Oak Bay Pharmasave, hopes residents will take advantage of national Prescription Drug Drop-off Day to safely discard unused or expired prescription medication.
Great teachers have an impact, students sayDon DescoteauNews staff
Teachers who have a special way of get-ting their points across that make us feel good or look at things differently do so through personal connections.
So who better to ask what makes a great grade school teacher than students who are living that experience daily?
In continuing our look at outstanding educators, part of Black Press and Sta-ples’ Great Teachers initiative, supported by Thrifty Foods, we heard from some well-spoken middle and high school stu-dents around the Capital Region.
We hope the teachers on their list of favourites, those who are really making a difference, will be nominated for Great Teachers awards at vicnews.com/con-tests.
Oak Bay High’s 2014 valedictorian Mohammed Abousaleh says the best
teachers are those who cap-ture students’ attention and “make every class, every hour, engaging.”
Not only that, instructors who are organized also get high marks from this honour roll student.
“When you’re making use of all the time you have in class, it kind of motivates you to look at other aspects of life,” he says.
While he appreciates teachers who aren’t afraid to change their mind, and those who encourage students to draw their own conclusions on discussion points, there has to be balance between flexibility and structure. “One of my teach-ers is very strict in (that) homework is assigned every night and checked every day. I appreciate that, because it disci-plines me in my own learning.”
Direct involvement with students strikes a chord with some.
Grade 9 Spencer middle school student Daniel St. Laurent, lit up when talking about a shop teacher who builds things and puts them up around the school.
“I help him with some of his projects,” Daniel says. “(He also) helps people step out of their comfort zones and try differ-ent things.”
Mixing things up also keeps things interesting, he adds. “One of my teachers teaches in three different ways. One day he’ll do it through video, another day it’ll be using worksheets and the next it’s talk-ing lessons, having discussions.”
Personal connections also allow teach-ers to make more in headway with indi-viduals who may be having troubles in the
classroom, says Spectrum’ Grade 11 Dezy Manuel.
“The best teachers go into a class where everyone is struggling and they make them better. They get people passionate about the subject and use that to their advan-tage,” she says.
“I love teachers who can relate to a student. If they can’t relate (to their teacher) they’re not going to have
that (same level of) interest in the sub-ject.”
Adds Sophie Adams, in Grade 11 at Edward Milne Community School in Sooke: “To me a great teacher is some-one who doesn’t consider themselves a teacher, but a mentor, and a mentor is someone who is passionate about what they’re teaching and develops great rela-tionships with students.”
Knowing more about individuals, such as whether they work a part-time job out-side school and have a lot on their plate,
Celebration time■ Black Press, Staples and Thrifty Foods encourage you to nominate a grade school teacher you feel is making a difference in the community. From all nominations, one teacher each from the elementary, middle school and secondary levels will be honoured at a gala in June. To nominate, visit vicnews.com/contests/ and click on Great Teachers. All nominators are entered to win a $50 Thrifty’s gift certificate.
The program is aimed at promoting safe storage and disposal of prescription, over-the-counter and other drugs, reducing the possibility of diversion of drugs and accidental poisonings.
“People don’t know how important it is not to have those medications at home. (They) don’t realize pharmacies take them anytime,” Nelson said. “It’s about awareness that pharmacies can take this and it’s not getting into landfills and the water supply.”
Both Pharmasave on Oak Bay Avenue and Estevan Pharmacy are accepting unused, and or expired
pharmaceuticals for drop off and safe disposal and accept them during all hours of operation, all-year round.
Despite some national advertising pointing to police departments taking the pharmaceuticals, local detachments including the Oak Bay Police Department are not taking them and are directing anyone with unneeded medication to put them into a single container, like a ziplock bag and take them to a local pharmacy. There is no need to disclose what type of drug it is, who it was prescribed for or why.

Staples helps kids reach higherHarmen Berghuis, general manager
for the Staples School Tools pro-gram, says store staff who work with students and families get a sense of how teachers think outside the box when it comes to assignments.
What sticks out in his mind are the science fair or heritage day projects on which students aim to reach a little higher.
“What we see, especially on the projects that are done by a couple of students or a team of students, is that teachers build into the assign-ment the ability for co-operation and collaboration even a bit of leadership, perhaps,” he says.

Coun. Michelle Kirby asked Oak Bay council to support a proposed provincial child care model featuring $10 a day, full time child care; $7 a day, part time childcare and free child care for families with an annual income of less than $40,000.
Council endorsed the Community
Plan for a Public System of Integrated Early Care and Learning proposed by the Coalition of Child Care advocates of B.C. and Early Childhood Educators of B.C.
Dozens of municipalities including Vancouver, Burnaby and Victoria have also endorsed the proposal.
One of a handful of volunteers who knew the more than $50,000 total students had raised for the Canadian Cancer Society fundraiser in 2013 before it was announced, he was proud to be among those to unveil the figure when the riders biked into the assembly in October of 2013.
That unity with his fellow students continues with his subsequent role as valedictorian, as voted by his peers, despite being in only his second year at the school. It’s a camaraderie principal Dave Thomson has witnessed first hand.
“He is just an all around, really neat kid. You don’t become the valedictorian for a grad class, given the fact a grad class votes, without having an impact on your peers and having them look at (him) as someone who represents them,” he said. “He is (also) a very high academic achiever, if he gets a 95 it’s a surprise, it’s a low mark. He is off
the charts academically and brings a whole bunch of mature approaches to the table.”
The scholarship, awarded for academic excellence in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, parters with 20 universities in Canada and five in Israel. Abousaleh will be recognized by the Board of Education May 20 and credits his parents for his success as he prepares to finish off his graduating year strong and pursue a computer science degree with a minor in business at UVic, something he said will be a little more comfortable now with this scholarship.
“It takes a huge load off and makes it so I can pursue what I’m interested in. This is one big thing most people have to worry about and I thought I would have to worry about, but now it’s off he table,” he said. “It’s a new standard to live up to and transcend. … I think I’m going to enjoy it a lot.”

GUEST COLUMN
YOUR VIEW
If you’re reading this and you’re over 40 years old, you probably remember, at some point in your childhood, going on vacation and roaming around in the back of the family van while you played with your toys and annoyed your siblings.
Or maybe you remember laying in the back window deck of the Pontiac Parisienne counting power poles while driving hundreds of miles. I vividly remember my dad having a cargo van with carpet in the back and two beanbag chairs for us kids to nap on.
Seatbelts? What seatbelts? Until 1968 the installation of lap belts for all seats and shoulder belts in the front seats of cars was optional.
The wearing of seatbelts became mandatory in BC under the Motor Vehicle Act in 1977 , and in some provinces it wasn’t a law until almost 1990.
This seems unbelievable because, for most, the wearing of a seatbelt is common sense since it greatly increases the chances of surviving a crash. Research has
shown that wearing lap/shoulder seat belts reduces the risk of fatal injury to front-seat passenger car occupants by 45 per cent and the risk of moderate-to-critical injury by 50 per cent.
There are only two exemptions to this rule, a taxi driver, while operating a taxi on a highway at a speed of less than 70 kilometres per hour, is exempt from the provisions of section 220 (4) of the Act. So are police officers if wearing a seatbelt may impede their ability to react quickly or if it could obstruct the performance of their duties.
Many drivers we encounter while doing
enforcement projects are not wearing seatbelts or are wearing them incorrectly.
Some of the excuses we have heard range from: “I just left my house a few minutes ago.”
“I find them uncomfortable,” and“I feel safer not wearing one. I
don’t want to be trapped in my car.”
Some drivers are found wearing them under their armpit instead of across their shoulder to avoid
wrinkling their clothes or irritating their neck. This will do no good in restraining you from hurtling towards the steering wheel at significant speeds if you collide with a large or immovable object.
Colliding with your steering wheel at less than highway speed will still do you significant harm.
Airbags are a nice, modern addition to safety restraint systems meant to work in concert with seatbelts, they are not a replacement for wearing a seatbelt.
Despite the seatbelt law being in place for more than 30 years, and statistics proving their worth in protecting you, we still write dozens of seatbelt tickets per month.
I was recently asked by a driver that I stopped for this offence, “Just who are you protecting while you’re doing this?” My answer was swift and without hesitation: “You.”
Wearing a seatbelt is just common sense. Wearing it and wearing it properly while your car is in motion is the law. If you choose not to, then be prepared for a $167 reminder.
Const. Rick Anthony is

Should we trust our leadership?
As we press relentlessly toward the looming brink of the highest cliff of extinction, how well prepared are we to do what is right in the circumstances we’re creating? Are the goals we continue to pursue, wise ones in these circumstances?
Is it likely that our ancient primitive ancestors possessed sufficient knowledge and wisdom to have created an adequate moral code to guide us through the technological, biological and moral aspects of the now looming crisis? Does our leadership possess real wisdom and capability, or is our ability to survive based mainly on worthless myths and grossly inadequate people? Please think carefully and justify what you say. Get used to the idea that there is no sky-hook to rescue us. While you’re at it, consider whether, through our inflated sense of entitlement, we attempt to live too high on the biosphere hog.
Does our system of selecting leaders encourage the emergence of sociopaths in positions of near absolute power? Do you tend to see in leadership candidates, primarily what you want them to be, rather than what a competent psychological assessment might, and subsequent experience will, prove them to be? If we are serious about having sound democracy, shouldn’t we institute mandatory psychological testing of all candidates, with stringent passing standards?
When you consider our leadership dispassionately, who among them would you entrust to be the sole guardian of the youngest members of your family? While we’re at reform, consider laws to keep opportunistic business and economists well away from political power. Therein is the cause of our many accumulating environmental catastrophes; gnawing at the very foundations of life on Earth.
Have we humans advanced far beyond the mental powers of the corvids (crow family members) in our ability to determine our fate? In fact, no. So we must discount our own hubris from here forward.
If you need a better basis for hope than this, you must get serious about recreating it from the remaining shreds of Earth’s biosphere. Accordingly, reconsider what must henceforth constitute a good preparatory education. It may include biology, psychology and physics, but it’s definitely not going to be contributions from the failed priesthoods of religion and economics.
Think about it. Talk about it. Start living a sustainable moral life. What is a real moral life? That too needs to be rethought. Nothing to do with some invented god. Let’s all grow up for starters.

Discovering beautiful B.C. in a classic car adventureOnly mad dogs and Englishmen drive open top cars in the extremely chilly B.C. high country at this time of year. But taking part in the three-day Hagerty Spring Thaw rally, staged by Classic Car Adventures, certainly turned on this Limey to the idea of a B.C. summer ‘staycation’ on roads that show natural beauty at its awe inspiring best.Since my old U.K. friend, George Holt, moved to Gabriola Island a few years ago, he’s pestered me to join him on a rally. Wild tales of his racing exploits persuaded me that my participation might make it the last wish on my buck-et list. Literally. When Hagerty Insurance invited me to take part in the non-competitive rally for pre-1979 touring and sports cars, covering almost 1,100 kilometres, I fig-ured this was the time to invite George.“I’m up for it, Sid, and I have the perfect car,” George responded. You get used to him calling every male, Sid, and female, Doris. He worked day and night to ready his 1954 XK 120 Jaguar roadster – it rolled off the production line in the same year I did. It cranks out 200 horses from an inline straight-six cylinder 3.4-litre engine housed under that long hood. The gleaming blue roadster with a large number 54 emblazoned on each side drew much attention at the rally start point in Squamish. The warming sun showed off the almost 80 other classics to their best, too. There were Alfa Romeos, many Minis circa mid-1960s, Porsches, Jags, MGs, Aston Martins – including a stunning 1934 Mk II owned by a gentleman from the same neck of the woods as George and me – plus a rare Noble M400.
We donned many layers of clothing, including leather aviator jackets and fetching, matching yellow helmets, then strapped in. George at the wheel, me by his side as his nagivator. We pulled out on the Sea to Sky highway and that journey to Whistler brought tears to my eyes, as did the rushing wind. The twisty Duffey Lake Road beyond Pemberton was no challenge for the mighty Jag. It stuck like glue to the hairiest hairpins down to Seton Lake. A rest stop at that watery stretch of tranquility brought the sounds of silence to our ears.George broke the silence: “It goes like stink, Sid.” I completed his sentence. “And stops eventually.” Recalling a recent bit of hard braking that had me worried for a while. It was then on to Cache Creek and des-ert country before climbing to the snow line towards Logan Lake where my face froze. The shower at the Kamloops hotel
brought back some colour to my cheeks. The second day would take us by Monte Lake and Falkland and on to Vernon – in the pouring, icy rain. The rains stopped as we stopped to look at a ‘car graveyard’ where rusty examples of steel steeds past caught George’s eye. “Look, Sid, my first car – a Ford Prefect.” I then misdirected us to a second graveyard near Arm-strong, populated by Sunbeams, Hillman and even old Zodiacs. He took careful note of the location so that he might return for his next restoration project. The sun peeped out as we were welcomed by the rug-ged northern end of the Okanagan Valley. We buzzed along the Lake Country lanes that run alongside Okanagan Lake, between the vineyards.
Then we bypassed Kelowna and headed for Beaver-dell, admiring the evidence of the now defunct historic Kettle Valley railway. Then the chilling hail hit but a single glass of beer at Rock Creek restored us. We weaved our way north along the valley, through wine country, to Penticton.“Piece of cake,” said George the next day as he looked at the route to Hope. The winding back road trail to Princeton was a joy but the last stretch home was not.First, we were hit by snow, then hail that numbed our faces as we descended from Manning Park. I thought I had made a significant anatomical discovery when it appeared that the icy wind blasting up my right nostril seemed to exit through my left ear. Of course, it could have been the hole in the left side of my helmet. There was one other little challenge. The panel failed so I had to peer at my handheld GPS to figure out what speed we were doing then shout at the top of my voice when George exceeded the posted limit. We made it safe and sound. “Next year, Sid?” “I’ll get back to you, George.”

The right bike at the right priceYou’ve got your licence and proper gear, now all you need is a motorcycle. Here are a few things to consider before signing on the dotted line.BudgetEstablishing a budget is probably the most important thing when it comes to your new ride. Particularly if you’re buying used. You might be tempted to spend an extra couple of thousand on the bike of your dreams. But if the dream bike happens to be a nightmare and costs a fortune on repairs, you might find yourself in a pickle. New or used? There are differing benefits to buying new or used. New bikes have warran-ties, but a used bike that might not be too old could still have one. Is buying either way better than the other? Not necessarily. Buying used you could get a more upscale model for your budget.Private sale or from a dealership?Buying through a private sale can be a good way to go, especially on a budget. I found my bike online. But if you can’t pay cash up front, dealers generally have financing or payment plan options. Private sales don’t. Dealers also have most likely done a tune-up or some service in preparing the bike for the sale. Check the VINIt might cost you a few extra dollars to run a bike’s VIN through a trusted database but can save you multiple headaches in the end. It will show if the bike has been in any reported accidents and detail
the damage. It’ll also show if there is money owing on the bike or if it was reported stolen. Keep in mind, if the bike is from out of the country, the record likely won’t show. When I went to buy my first bike, I had my heart set on a beautiful Yamaha R6. It looked brand new and perfect. The seller said it had never been in an accident and had all original parts. I left thinking the next day I’d be riding this beauty home. I paid my $20 (at the time) and found out the bike had been in two accidents with damage of more than $3,000. If you’re buying through a dealership, they might have the bike’s history on hand. It never hurts to double check. The myth of displacementsMany new riders like to set a cap on the cc displacement they’re willing to get for their first bike. I had a reader
write me asking what he should get. He’s 6-foot-two-inches tall and 220 pounds with long limbs. He didn’t want anything higher than a 250cc though. He wanted something man-ageable for his first bike. With long arms and legs, a 250cc bike wasn’t go-ing to fit him. Or vice versa. I told him to look at cruisers, like the Harley-Da-vidson Sportster, Honda Shadow, Su-zuki Boulevard S40, Yamaha Bolt. They might have a higher displacement but they’re going to be work better with his body. I recommend buying a bike you are comfortable on.Test ridesPrivate sellers won’t generally let you test ride, but ask. Dealers are more open, especially with newer models because they have demo fleets. Mechanical inspection If you’re buying used, and you are this close to making the decision, before you go to the bank and give up your savings, spend the extra $100 to $200 to have a motorcycle mechanic to look at your potential purchase. Private sellers will generally ride the bike down to a location of your choice and let the mechanic work their magic. The mechanic will then let you know what things might need to be worked on in the near or distant future. If the seller thinks it’s too much work, then it’s your call if you want to continue to work with them. I wouldn’t buy a bike without knowing what I’m getting onto.
‘‘Establishing a budget is probably the most important thing to outline when it comes to your new ride.’’Alexandra Straub

OAK BAY NEWS - Friday, May 9, 2014 www.vicnews.com • A11
Audi is one of the luxury brands under the massive Volkswagen Group, which includes Lamborghini, Bugatti and Porsche. By sharing engineering knowledge, platforms and engines across several different brands, (including the mainstream Volkswa-gen brand) enables VW to reduce costs and develop more products. One area of importance, in Canada, is the introduction of more and more diesel, or TDI en-gines, into the marketplace. The 2014 Audi A7 TDI is a perfect example of what the VW Group is doing right. The engine is a fuel-sipping diesel that saves roughly 25 to 30 percent over a conventional gasoline engine, yet still supplies the dynamic ride Audi owners look for.LooksThe body of the A7 TDI is the same as the gasoline versions and it could be one of the best-looking four-door luxury vehicles on the road. Actually, the A7 could be considered a five-door model, as the rear cargo rear is accessed through a massive hatch. This, in combination
with the sleek coupe-like
silhouette is what makes this car different than much of the competition. Buyers who like the idea of a big luxury car but also want something a bit sportier will enjoy the dynamic stance, especially combined with the oversized sports wheels. Oversized is also a good way to describe the A7s grille, which is framed by an aggressive set of headlamps and deep front spoiler. The back is much more subdued and the rear lights look almost Aston Martin-inspired.InsideThe downside to the
swept roofline and large hatchback is the amount of headroom for rear seat passengers. Taller passen-gers might find it a bit snug and big items might not fit in the cargo area. This is why Porsche produced the Panamera sport-back, with a much higher roof for full-sized adult passengers. The reality is that many pro-fessionals who can afford this car will more than likely have a family SUV for those times when larger adults or cargo needs to be moved. The front seats enjoy a view to a sumptuous dashboard and luxury filled experience. The best materials are used and I find Audi’s computer controller to be one of the easiest on the market.
DriveAudi uses a variation of its 3.0L direct injection turbo diesel in five of its models from the practical Q5 and Q7 SUVs to the A6, A7 and A8 sedans. This A7, along with the Q5 and A6 get the newest version of this engine sporting a bump in torque from 406 lb-ft to 428 lb-ft. Torque is what it is all about with diesel engines. The ability to get away from a traffic light and cruise along at highway speeds makes a diesel engine a rewarding vehicle to drive. Put the throttle down and this big luxury sedan just rockets away, the way a huge V8 would have in years past. The up side is that the driver gets all that
power but also impressive fuel economy, something that had eluded luxury buyers in the past. The A7 is rated at 8.7L/100km in the city and stingy 5.3L on the highway. In compari-son, a 2014 Honda Civic is rated at 5.0L/100km on the highway. For fuel savings and power the diesel is the way to go.VerdictThe Audi A7 is a lovely car filled with sex appeal, performance, luxury and prestige that all come at a price. Starting at $72,900, the diesel is a $2,500 premium over the base A7. The owner could recapture that additional money over several years of driving thanks to the improved fuel
economy. This technology is also available in other, less expensive models, so don’t be too shocked by the start-ing price. One thing Audi does not have is a four-cyl-inder diesel for the smaller and less expensive models,
something both BMW and
Mercedes offer. I suspect there will be one coming in short order, but for now the A7 is a prime example of Audi’s expansion into diesel transportation.

During a recent short stay in Los Angeles, I drove a Mazda3i Grand Touring. It’s a trim level not available in Canada, even though Mazda3 is more
popular (comparatively) in Canada than the US. And price, well, that also turned out to be a surprisingly interesting comparison. It’s easy to understand
why so many Canadians already love Mazda3. The 2014 edition is an improved all-new generation car that’s already been voted
Canada’s Best New Small Car, by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC). Softer, more flowing body
styling lines cover a new SkyActiv structure that’s lighter yet, according to Mazda, offers a 30 per cent improvement in torsional rigidity. The 3’s wheelbase has also been stretched by six centimetes yet it’s a tad shorter in overall length. Inside the cabin there’s more room, especially leg and head room for the rear passengers. Mazda3i GT Sedan: A top-line GT (Grand Touring) edi-tion of Mazda3 is available in Canada, but only with a larger 2.5-litre SkyActiv engine and an automatic transmission. The 3i GT that I drove in LA came with the smaller 2.0-litre SkyActiv engine and a six-speed manual transmission. The 2.0-litre engine was available last year in Mazda3, but the new body
allows a larger exhaust manifold and this improves its mid-range torque output. It’s definitely better, but still not great. That said, overall I really like this engine and crisp-shifting manual trans-mission combination. There was 312 miles (502 km) on the trip meter when I pulled into a gas station, for the first time, at the end of my stay. It took less than 9 gallons ($35) to fill the tank. That’s 34.8 mpg (U.S.), or 41.8 mpg (Imp gal) or 6.9 L/100 km, if you prefer metric and brilliant by any measure. My driving was a mix of city/highway and usual traffic hold-ups that are commonplace in the LA area. The EPA official com-bined fuel economy rating for this vehicle is 33 mpg. Canada vs US: Small cars are number one in Canada and we bought over 40,000 Mazda3 models last year, making it the fourth most
popular small car. Mid-size cars traditionally out-sell small cars in the U.S., and Mazda3 was only the 10th best seller in the small car segment, however, that’s still 100,000 plus sales. A no-frills, stripped base model is also the norm in the U.S., but not in Canada (got to have those seat heaters). Our American friends have a choice of six Mazda3 trim levels, while Canadians have only three. The base Mazda3 GX, with a start price of $15,995 in Canada, is a bargain. That’s $950 below the lowest priced Mazda3 sold in the U.S., the SV (stripped edition) at $16,945. At the top end, a Mazda3 Sky GT is $25,855 in Canada. The equivalent U.S. model is a Mazda3s GT (automatic) at $25,995.An extended version of this story is at drivewaybc.ca.

Making a differenceAidan Solomon,
11, is involved in sports and other activities and is emerging as a leader in and out of school. A Grade 6 student at Happy Valley elementary, he is on the soc-cer, basketball and
volleyball teams and mentors Kin-dergarten students in drawing or other projects as a Big Buddy. He will attend the hockey academy at Spencer middle school this fall and was recently named captain of his West Shore Whalers pee wee lacrosse team.
Eleven-year-old Anastasia Bird enjoys all her Grade 5 subjects at Ecole Millstream elementary equally. She played on the school bas-ketball team and will soon try out for track and field. She’s very busy
with Girl Guides outside school and is a Sparks leader within that group. She loves to camp and has attended several regional Guides gatherings. She recently received a scholarship to St. Mar-garet’s, where she’ll attend school in Grade 6 this September.
For some reason, I’ve been thinking about the “baby years.”
Maybe it’s all those puffy pink blossoms triggering memories of a time when everything seemed coloured in pretty pastels. Maybe it’s Facebook. I keep seeing younger friends posting baby pictures and it reminds me that the world was once very, very small: about the size of my babies’ eyes.
I’m grateful Facebook didn’t exist in the baby years. I’d have been beyond obnoxious: here’s a photo of Danica looking at a tree; here’s a photo of Sierra sitting in a chair; here’s a photo of the girls smiling – it’s a bit blurry, but can you see the new tooth popping out of Sierra’s gums?
In those years, little existed beyond babies. I recall arriving at my parent’s home one morning with my firstborn, a burbling baby Danica. We walked into the bathroom and there I was in the mirror. But it
wasn’t me. I’d slept the night before with wet hair and now it sprung out in all directions like a furry Russian hat. My eyes were puffy and a spot of dried coffee sat in the corner of my mouth. Danica, on the other hand, was bright and clean, with combed curly
locks and little laces tied on perfect white shoes.
Danica was nicely dressed in those days, but not in the way I had envisioned.
I sort of thought that since I liked denim, I’d dress my kids in little denim pants, little jean shirts and jackets. Anything else would be yellow, green or blue. At all costs, I would avoid pink, and I would never, ever purchase a frilly dress.
Then, as I wheeled Danica down a bumpy road in a stroller one day, someone asked the heart-ripping question: “How old is he?” He! So out came the pink sleepers. Out came the barrettes, out came the frills.
At Danica’s first Easter
she was six months old. We gathered at my parent’s house for a special dinner and she emerged more dressed than the turkey.
I stuffed her into this pink mass of frills and lace, heaved her legs into white tights and stuck little black patent shoes on her feet. Worst of all, my mother took photographs of everyone’s favourite cherub so she will exist forever in pink.
But in fact, life became pink all over.
Sandy (a woman I met in pre-natal class) and I took to walking through town, pushing our offspring in strollers, talking about nothing that didn’t relate to babies.
The sun warmed our faces. Pink blossoms poked from trees in the park; even the sound of cars motoring by became a happy hum in the
background. Life was still and gentle … and pink.
One day we joined other new parents in a coffee shop and for a split second I emerged from baby bliss long enough to notice our strange antics.
We made weird faces and noises. We gurgled, burped, blew, bubbled and sang unlikely little songs. We performed face gymnastics and body contortions – anything to elicit a beatific baby smile.
One of the burly, masculine men at our table said, “Try this.” He leaned toward Danica and started clucking.
Soon we were all clucking. Then Danica swatted at
Sandy, and I murmured off-handedly, “You’re supposed to honk when she touches your nose.” So Sandy honked. Then we all honked.
Twenty odd years later, the world is a little bigger and things aren’t so pink (more like green, if I consider the flow of money from my wallet).
But I’ve discovered that your babies never really stop being the centre of your universe. Um, just check my Facebook page.
PINK ALL OVER: Reliving the baby years

Q: How do I nd the right senior living community for my parent(s)/loved one?A: Finding the right retirement community for your parent(s)/loved one can be confusing and appear complicated. It doesn’t have to be. Here is a list of things to look for when you visit a retirement community in your neighbourhood.
Above all, trust yourself! You know what is best for your parent(s)/loved one. Do you feel at ease with the people you interact with? Does it feel like a place that would suit your loved one and they would feel safe and comfortable living in?
• Pay attention to the sta - Watch how the sta interact with the residents. Observe their friendliness.- Do they make eye contact and really engage with the residents?
• Ask to have a meal - for many reasons- is is a great way to check out the ambiance, resident energy and mix, options for seating, and of course - meal selections, presentation and taste. Enjoying a good meal is one of the most important aspects of daily life in any retirement community
• Ask about Security and Safety- It is important to know about re regulations. - Ask who responds to the 24 emergency call system.

Christa Atherton, owner of The Apple Box, highly values family time with her husband, Blake, son, Ryder, 5, and daugh-ter, Piper, 3, and will soon see a baby boy added to the mix.
Q How do you find time for “you” outside of being a “mom”?
A That’s tough one. It’s a delicate balance between work and kids. Owning my own com-pany takes up a lot of time. On the weekends, anytime we have together is family time. But in the evening after I put the kids to bed, it’s a good time to catch up with my hubby and regroup. Even sitting with my friend and watching TV is like a mini vaca-tion.
Q What are you reading right now? What do you read with your son?
A Outlander, by Diana Gabaldon, an adven-ture-style novel. It’s a time-travel book based in Scotland with a lot of folklore. With the kids, we read something different every day. We’ve been doing the Barefoot Books. They come with a CD and you don’t need to censor them, which is good. They sit and listen to stories for hours.
Q What is your favourite family activity to share together?
A I would say going for walks and bike rides is pretty huge for us. We just recently started skateboarding as well. We really enjoy a big plate of nachos together. Going down to
the Causeway and watching the entertainers is also a fun one. We like to maximize our time together.
Q The part of your day you look forward to the most?
A Dinner time. Coming home and having dinner with my family. Generally speaking, my husband will have dinner on the go. We sit down together and decide whether we’re going to have an adventure that night. I feel some-times that we’re starting to live separate lives, so that coming together time is important. Also first thing in the morning, when the kids jump into bed and discussing what we’re going to do that day.

Greater Victoria Family

The seeds of literacy can be sown at any age. As such, many programs in Greater Victoria help parents give their children an early start on reading.
Jan Dupuis, a literacy out-reach co-ordinator in the Capital Region, helps various organiza-tions and families connect and collaborate.
The Greater Victoria Public Library and the READ Society, for example, host a range of pro-grams for families. They target children of any age, Dupuis said, though many focus specifically on the five-and-under group.
“Family literacy is focused on parents engaging with their chil-dren right from birth with liter-acy activities,” Dupuis said.
Programs focus on reading, writing and numbers at early ages then move to learning with technology later on. Other pro-
grams also encourage singing and cooking together as families, along with other activities.
“Literacy really involves those tasks that increase the levels of skill and confidence and self-esteem and really connect the family,” Dupuis said.
The Parent-Child Mother Goose program offered at vari-ous library branches and com-munity centres brings parents together with their young chil-dren to share stories and music.
The READ Society hosts the Noisy Kids Reading Club, an after-school program offered through school districts that sees children who could ben-efit from extra literacy support learn through reading, theatre and educational games.
Shantael Sleight is literacy out-reach co-ordinator with Your Lit-eracy Connection Westshore.
“We’re always looking to get a better understanding on where the needs are, where the gaps
are and what is already in place in terms of improving literacy at any level, “ she said.
Books for Breakfast sees fami-lies come together with facilita-tors to read books, sing songs and enjoy a snack, while parents learn effective literary skills to teach their children. Each fam-ily gets a new book at the end of each session.
The Family Learning Tour, a one-day event in January, sees families learn about informal reading, such as labels and reci-pes, along with the value of play as a learning tool. The program runs throughout the West Shore.
“(Parents) have grown to love reading with their children and showing them how much fun it can be,” Sleight said. “They feel more confident to get out there and try something new and learn with their children.”

Natalie NorthNews staff
Prospective home buyers in Vic-toria may have a difficult time seal-ing the deal at month’s end when the country’s national housing agency does away with two insur-ance products – a move that could spark repercussions across the buyers’ and rental markets alike.
Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), Canada’s leading provider of mortgage loan insurance and mortgage-backed securities, on April 25 announced the discontinuation of its second home and self-employed without a third-party income validation prod-ucts. After May 30, homeowners with one CMHC-insured mortgage will have to sell said property in order to become eligible for a sec-ond. Additionally, self-employed applicants must have two years of unaudited, independent third-party validation of their income, as opposed to stating income of year’s past to qualify.
While the Crown Corporation claims just three per cent of their business came via such products in 2013 and has no comment on what effects the change may spark, at least one local mortgage planner is willing to venture an educated guess.
Kam Brar, mortgage planner with Auxilium Mortgage Corporation in Colwood, puts forward a typical example of a young couple who has bought a new condo a few years ago when the Victoria mar-ket was at its peak.
“Now you decide to go sell that condo, however, for whatever reason – let’s say it’s not worth
what you owe, or any other rea-sons – you can’t get out of it right now and you decide you just want to rent it and then buy the other property,” Brar says.
Your choices: either sell it, or you live in it, or you find a 20 per cent down payment for the new purchase, to avoid CMHC.
“If you’re not turning them into rentals, you’re either going to be living in it or selling. Most of these upgrades are usually condos,” Brar said. “That’s usually the step-ping stone to the next property purchase. We’ll see what happens because they’re the feeder pool for the whole market. If you look at it as an eco-cycle. It starts with a small purchase and you move your way up gradually.”
Should many potential landlords decide to stay in their condos now, at a time when Victoria has a fairly high number of new con-dominiums recently completed, Brar says, a lack of used inventory could be quite helpful to develop-ers at this time.
With the changes still a matter of weeks away, CMHC isn’t willing to venture a guess at the possible side effects of the change.
“Basically we want to help Cana-dians meet their housing needs and our insurance business activi-ties need to contribute to the sta-bility of the housing markets and finance systems,” said Charles Sauriol, media relations for CMHC. “This is a business decision that we made and again, it’s just look-ing at our products and how they fit with our core objectives.”
Brar, underlining his view that CMHC’s products were intended to enable first-time buyers, not future land barons, has his own hypoth-eses on the timing of the changes.
“I think they are hearing from a lot of worldwide economists that the Canadian housing mar-
ket’s over valued; it’s a bubble. And they want to be seen as being proactive,” Brar says, quoting reviews made by the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Insti-tutions following the 2008 the sub-prime meltdown.
“Sometimes you wonder if the actions that you take lead to the
events that are the eventual out-comes, so if it’s a self-fulfilling prophecy, if we do all of these things will we have basically interfered with the market, that same market that will correct and we’ll say that we were right?”
