From Your Pastor

The Moravian Church is a Church that remembers and a church that celebrates. Some say that we are too tied to tradition, but I believe our traditions are still relevant and meaningful today. We don’t worship the traditions themselves; we worship our Lord Jesus Christ. Our tra-ditions come out of deeply spiritual experiences. One of our most beloved traditions is the lovefeast. It came out of the deeply spiritual experience of August 13, 1727. Before that particular day, the Moravians had been divided over many issues; some theologi-cal, some having to do with worship, and some over personalities. Some of the people had even turned against Zinzendorf. The commu-nity of Herrnhut was full of dissension and conflict and the people were not acting like Christian brothers and sisters. During that summer the community began to heal itself through pray-er and Bible study. Zinzendorf also wrote a “Brotherly Agreement,” a guide to living in Christian community. Every person signed it and pledged to live in love and harmony. A special Communion service was planned for Wednesday, August 13. It would be the first service of the reconciled community. There was already a real sense of expectancy as the people walked the mile from Herrnhut to the Berthelsdorf church. ‘It seemed as though they were all enveloped in a special cloud of love and mutual admiration.” Then, during the communion service, the Holy Spirit was poured out upon them in such a way as never before experienced by any of them. It was like that of the biblical Pentecost. Spiritually, they were trans-formed and made one in spirit. After the service was over, they were enjoying this mutual spiritual ex-perience so much, they didn’t want leave each other’s company. Zin-zendorf had food sent to them from his home and they all ate together in groups, just as they did in the Church of Acts. To commemorate and celebrate the August 13th outpouring of the Holy Spirit, the Moravians began having lovefeasts. The service con-sists of a simple meal, music, and sermon. It is a service of unity and fellowship in the presence of Jesus. Even today, the lovefeast contin-ues to be a very spiritual experience. Join us for August 13th Lovefeast. God bless and I’ll see you in church, Matthew

Proverbs 17:22, says, "A merry heart does good, like

medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones.”

A Sunday school teacher asked her children as they Were on the way to church service, 'And why is it necessary to be quiet in church?' One bright little girl replied,

‘Because people are sleeping.'

Dear Oak Grove,

Thank you for the beautiful plant, cards, phone calls and pray-ers during the loss of my mother. It has been a blessing to have the love and support of my church family.

Love,

Helen Hester

A Letter of Thanks…….

Dear Oak Grove, I want to show my appreciation for Pastor Matthew Allen and his tireless service visiting my Aunt Lucy in the Rest Home. Oak Grove Church was such a blessing to Lucy her whole life. From helping her to get her first air conditioner window unit, to washing her windows, to visiting her in the Rest Home. Oak Grove was such a blessing to Aunt Lucy. You helped her with someone to mow the yard when she needed it. You did so many things for her, I am sure I am not even aware of everything you did to help her. Pastor Allen was so kind to continue to visit Lucy, even after her mind had started to deteriorate in the Rest Home. I want to especially thank the Oak Grove youth and Pastor Allen for visiting Lucy on her last birthday! The problem with living to be 97 yrs old, there just are not many relatives and friends still left around to cele-brate your birthday. But Lucy always had Oak Grove to comfort her. You deserve more than the $400 I am sending, much more. God Bless! Please let someone read this to the con-gregation, so they will know that they should be proud of their pastor and his very kind service! Thank you again to those who washed windows and mowed grass and trimmed bushes and most of all, for all those who visited Lucy over the last 27 years. May your faithful service be rewarded by our Lord and Saviour, JESUS CHRIST! Sincerely, Chris Gardner 5826 Saint Cecilia Rd Jacksonville FL 32207 [email protected]

The King’s Teens & ’Tweens

Summer 2014

NO regular Wednesday night meetings from Memorial Day to Labor Day

Lake Myers was a blast! THANKS to Arnold & Andra for being such wonderful hosts! 17 young people en-joyed good Christian fellowship & no doubt slept very well upon returning home that night! Visiting some of Oak Grove’s Shut-Ins was truly a blessing for all, including the 6 (7 counting Linea!) chil-dren who went. Christmas In July Lock-In was good as always. We packed 26 boxes for impoverished children. Linda Miller taught us how to make homemade biscuits from scratch, a useful life skill! We cooked sausage to go in them and then watched the movie, “God’s Not Dead”. At 2:00 a.m. everyone was texting everyone they knew to say that “God’s not dead!” The Car Wash & selling those delicious homemade sausage biscuits earned $350 to ship Operation Christ-mas Child shoebox gifts and go toward future events. Vacation Bible School was fun. The kids had a good time and will probably always remember that, “Love is patient, love is kind, it does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud, it is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrong; love does not delight in evil, but rejoices with the truth”! Aug. 6 Lunch at Dairi-O. Food Bank 2:00-4:00 for ages 12 + up. Ages 11 + under loving thy neighbor with Angie. Carpool from church at 12:00. Thursday, Aug. 14 Summer Finale! Back by popu-lar demand, BOWLING! Carpool from the church.

Sign-up sheets will be posted on the bulletin board.

The Prayer Cycle is an important ministry of our church. If you would like to participate, please contact Katherine Linville.

Newsletter Notes

From around the Southern Province

Calling young Moravians of all ages. Sunday, August 17, will be a special day for you at Historic Bethabara Park. That’s when the entire Southern Province will hold a Children’s Festival commemorating the Moravian children’s spiritual renewal in Herrnhut on that date in 1727. Festivities this August 17 will begin at 2 p.m. and will include re-enactments, games, story-telling, Gemeinhaus tours, historic crafts and music and a spe-cial lovefeast at 4 p.m. The Provincial Board of Cooperative Ministries is sponsoring the Bethabara Children’s Festival in partnership with Bethabara Church and the Salem Creek Regional Conference of Trinity, St. Philips, Messiah, and Home churches. It’ll be a big thing and all for young Moravi-ans of all ages.

Summertime means Vacation Bible School in many churches. We pass this on from one church: “Remember everyone, VBS is one of our biggest community outreach events of the year! We need 75 adult and youth volunteers. . . .” Seventy-five! You go, New Philly! May all 75 be kept busy with an overflowing Bible School. And in all our congregations.

Hanging Rock State Park on June 7 dedicated a Sensory Awareness Trail, which King middle and senior high youth installed last summer as part of their Eco Mission Week. The trail is designed for those who are visually or otherwise physi-cally impaired who cannot otherwise experience the hiking trails and natural wonders of the state park.

Sometimes it’s the little blessings that count, as Clemmons reports on its repairs in May: “Most important, the bee issue in the CE building was resolved. . . . No more bees and, thankful-ly, no hive was found.” Richard W. Starbuck
