Oak Grove Mission Statement
Our mission is to glorify God through worship, bring people to faithful
discipleship in Christ, equip them for ministry in the church and the
world, and grow in our love for one another through fellowship.
Pastor's Page
It is the season of fall and time to shape your trees and plants
and to remove any dead wood before winter. It’s called prun-
ing. It takes place in the life of a Christian as well. The talk of
dead wood being cut off and our lives being cut and shaped
may not sound appealing to us but the Lord says to us that every
vine that bears fruit will be pruned so that it bears more.
If we are Christians it is not a matter of if we will be pruned,
God’s word says that we will, it is a matter of when and how
will we accept it when it comes our turn. I believe that we can
help the process and that there is no better time than the present
to start. Let’s talk about cutting away that dead wood or vine.
How much time do you spend watching television compared to
the time that you spend in the word of God? How much better
would you feel if the word of God was fresh in your heart in-
stead of the worry of the world and the trials that come into our
lives? It is not a matter of one or the other but can we spend
more time in something that will bless and guide us? At least
turn the channel to hear a good sermon once in a while.
Can you spend a little less time on the internet or the cell
phone and more time talking to God? He wants to hear from
you and He is willing to speak to you through His word and
through the Holy Spirit. You can see and put good things on
Facebook and we have the Sunday sermon on the website each
week. Again there is nothing wrong with those things but don’t
allow them to get in front of your prayer time. That time with
God can be some of your best time of the day. Martin Luther
once said, “I have so much to do tomorrow that I need to get up
two hours early so that I can pray extra about it.”
Pruning may feel awkward at first but just like the vegetation
that is pruned if we allow ourselves to make these changes we
will soon see a different us when we look in the mirror. You
will see a more contented and happier version of yourself. I
hope you are willing to give it a try, I know you will enjoy the
fruit of your labor.
God’s Blessings,
David

2015 CROP HUNGER WALK
WE WALK BECAUSE THEY WALK
Over 1 billion of the world’s population is undernourished,
more than 1 of every 7 people on the planet. Everyday
16,000 children die worldwide from hunger. Hunger and
malnutrition kill more people than AIDS, tuberculosis, and
malaria combined.
Sunday, October 18, 2015
Children & Adults can be walkers. Enjoy a good
walk through Old Salem for a good cause. If you
would like to walk or make a monetary donation,
please see Robin or Hayley Wolfington.

Newsletter Notes
From around the Southern Province
What’s this? Earth-moving machinery in our beloved Salem Moravi-an Graveyard? But have no fear. It’s Salem Congregation beginning a major project to improve the walkways in the old section of Salem God’s Acre. Brick pavers will be laid on the sidewalks to replace the asphalt that goes back perhaps to 1938. The project will repair the damage that has been done over the years by tree roots and general wear and tear. The work will take several months to complete and will require closing Cedar Avenue, except during funerals.
Salem College has been growing again. Following up on its new Student Center in 2014, the first new building on campus in 32 years, Salem College has opened a new student residence, the McHugh Sisters Flats, on the outskirts of the Salem historic district on the northeast cor-ner of Main and Cemetery Streets. It’s Salem’s first student residence since Gramley Hall in 1965. To back it all up and lay a firm foundation for the future, Salem Academy & College has launched a breathtaking $60 million fundraising campaign —with $33 million already pledged.
Clemmons reports one of its own, Sam Lendle, presently living in Berkley, California, set a world record. No, not chicken pie making. We leave that with half a dozen churches. It was skydiving. Head first. Linked in a star formation. 164 of them, which beat the previous world record of a mere 135. On July 30 above Illinois. They started at 20,000 feet. Gulp. All 164 landed safely. Phew. It was their 13th try. Lucky num-ber, that. Google it on the Internet. Squint at the pictures, and if we use our imagination it almost looks like a Moravian star.
For its National Back to Church Sunday on September 13, Fried-berg’s pastors promised that if attendance reached 460 Jim Newsome Jr. would sit in a dunking booth during the luncheon that followed wor-ship and on the youth visit to Carowinds Dan Nelson would ride the Fu-ry 325 “giga-coaster.” That didn’t happen. Attendance fell short by 20. Report from the church office: the ministers “were happy — well, sort of.” (You know ministers love overflowing churches.)
From one church newsletter we glean a reassuring word:
“Attendance Report: August 2015: 308; August 2104: 315.” Somehow it
is very comforting to know that the Moravian Church will still be around
in 2104 long after we are permanent in God’s Acre, even if the reassur-
ing word comes to us as a typo.

Notes from the Oak Grove Moravian Archives
When I first began organizing our church papers into a formal ar-chive, I stumbled across a Xeroxed copy of a document titled “A History of the Women of the Church.” I quoted a section from it about the Oak Grove women rejoicing that they had spent $9.00 to get the well, rope and bucket repaired so that they now had water at the church in 1927.
Recently, I found the original of that copied document, hand-written on 4 sheets of unlined, brittle, yellowed paper. It is undated, though internal dates seem to indicate that it was written in the early 1940s. This history was “Respectfully submitted by, Mrs. J. Willis Sell.”
Mrs. Sell’s conclusion to her history was “…we are convinced anew that the Lord has taken care of His work, and those who so feebly try to carry on His mission, and can truly say with the psalmist, The Lord hath done great things for us, whereof we are glad.”
Finding Mrs. Sells’ document, at just this time in our church’s life, does not seem to be an accident to me. It’s one of the ways that the Lord reminds us of His presence and that He is still taking care of His work and those who do it.
This original document will be preserved in the Southern Province Moravian Archives, where I do not doubt that Mrs. Sell’s words will delight future researchers as much as they have delighted me.
Do you have such treasures stashed in a drawer or piled in a box somewhere in your home? If you come across them, please con-sider bringing them to Oak Grove and adding them to our archive.
Respectfully submitted,
Louise Whealton
