Why is art important?● It’s a language all people speak that cuts across racial, cultural,

social, educational, and economic barriers and enhances cultural appreciation and awareness.

● It provides opportunities for self expression, bringing the inner world into the outer world of concrete reality.

● It develops both independence and collaboration.● Art promotes positive self esteem● It makes it possible to use personal strengths in meaningful ways

and to bridge into understanding sometimes difficult abstractions through its strengths

● It improves academic achievement-enhances test scores, attitudes, social skills, critical and creative thinking.

● It exercises and develops higher order thinking skills including analysis, synthesis, evaluation, and “problem-finding.”

Course Description:This course develops a foundation in drawing, painting, printmaking and sculpture through the five components of the Visual and Performing ArtsFramework and OUSD’s Visual Art Content Standards.

Students learn techniques for using a variety of two-dimensional media and explore the expressive potential of those media. Reading, writing, and studio production expand the students’ understanding of the visual arts. History and appreciation of art of major cultures parallels studio instruction. Personal expression and knowledge of processes are stressed. A portfolio is developed and a number of art related careers are discussed.

Attendance is very important. It affects everything, for example, if a student is absent, he/she obviously cannot participate in class. Therefore, the student will lose participation points. It is imperative that students keep track of their absences and clear them in the attendance office as soon as possible.Excused absences will not affect the student’s grade.

● I use Aries Interface Browser (ABI) to record students daily and weekly points, so I highly recommend that all students get an ABI account
