Editorial • Dame Anne Salmond was the 2013 New Zealander of the Year.COMMENT: Afterthisterribletragedy, let'sbehonest, foronce.Whitesupremacy is a part of us, a dark power in the land. In its soft version, it looks bland and reasonable, writesDameAnne Salmond.EminentNewZealandersassuretheirfellowsthatMāoriwere "lucky" to be colonised by Europeans, that te reo Māori is worthless, that tikanga Māori have nothing toteach us. Others simply assume ancestral legacies from EuropearesuperiortothosefromthePacific—inthelaw, science, social and cultural life. Contempt breeds contempt, and hatred can breed hatred. Sometimes they strike back, as you would expect —althoughmoreoftenthannot, atthosecloseathand. The doctrine of white superiority is based on arrogance, and ignorance. Since other cultures, languages and religions are worthless, there's no need to learn aboutthem. The "others" are dehumanised, making their misery andsufferingunreal.Thishelpstoexplainourtoleranceforthe terrible statistics of youth suicide, incarceration, andfamily violence in New Zealand. This promise was utterly smashed by the incomingsettler government, which proclaimed and practisedwhitesupremacy.Onehundredandthirtyfiveyearslaterwhen the Waitangi Tribunal was set up, the New Zealand Government took a step away from this doctrine, although thepromiseofequalityhasyettobeamplyfulfilled. In thepresent, let's face it,online, ontalkback, in taxisand around dinner tables, the doctrine of white superiority isstillaliveandwell inNewZealand. It'sabsolutelyrightthat our Prime Minister should take a stand for kindness andgenerosity, arohaandmanaakitanga in the relationsamongdifferentgroupsinourcountry.Butlet'snotpretendthere'snotadarkunderbellyinNewZealand society. The rest of us have to name it, challenge it whenitcomestolight, andreplaceitwithbetterwaysofbeingKiwi.ThoseintheMuslimcommunityhavesuffereda terrible loss and need our love and support. But they are not the only group who are targeted by white supremacists, and there are more ways of killing and maiming people than with a gun.

Emmaus Eucharist In John’sGospel, following the feedingof5000withfiveloaves and two fish, Jesus instructed his apostles andthe peoplewho searched for himuntil they found him inCapernaum. He taught them about Eucharist, Eternal Life andResurrection–hisresurrectionandours. “UnlessyoueatthefleshoftheSonofMananddrinkhisblood, youhavenolifeinyou.Whoevereatsmyfleshanddrinksmybloodhas eternal life and I will raise him up on the last day.” (Jn 6:53-54) Luke, in his Gospel, presents similar teaching in his account of the two disciples on the Road to Emmaus after thecrucifixionanddeathofJesus.Theywereverydejectedanddid not give credence to rumours they had heard that some women had seen Jesus alive. As they walked they were joined by a stranger whom they did not recognise as Jesus because“theireyeswerekept fromrecognisinghim.” (Lk24:16). They told the stranger about Jesus and his death, andsaid:“WehadhopedthathewouldbetheonetosetIsrael free.” (Lk 24:21) “We had hoped ..........” Perhaps these are among thesaddestthreewordsintheGospels.AftertheyhadfollowedJesus and listened to his teaching, their dreams were now shattered!DidtheyanylongerbelieveinJesus?Thenthestranger(Jesus)“explainedtothemeverythinginScriptureconcerning himself.” (Lk 24:27) As they approached Emmaus they invited the stranger, “Staywithus.”(Lk24:29)Then“Whenhewasattablewiththem, he took the bread, said the blessing, broke it and gave it to them. And their eyes were opened and they recognised him. And he vanished out of their sight.” (Lk 24:30-31) UntilJesussatdownwiththemandrepeatedhisactionsfrom the Last Supper, their eyes were kept from seeing him. Whydidhevanishassoonastheyrecognisedhim?Jesuswaspointingouttothemthewayhewouldbepresenttothem from now on – in the Eucharist. He was showing them thattheEucharistishiscrucifiedandrisenbody.Whilethetwodisciplesmaynothaverealiseditatthetime,Jesus had answered their prayer when they invited him, “Staywithus.” IneveryEucharistheanswerstheirprayerandsaystoallofus,“Iamwithyoualways,eventotheendoftime.”(Mt28:20)This article is based mainly on thoughts from the final chapter of “Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist” by Brant Pitre, with some thoughts from the “Emmaus” chapter of “Jesus, a Pilgrimage” by James Martin SJ. Both are available for download from Kindle. Mark Wylie
