Organizational BehaviorIntegrating Individuals, Groups, and Organizations

Joseph Champoux

The fourth edition of Organizational Behaviour: Integrating Individuals, Groups and Organizations is a well-organized introduction to the current field of organizational behavior with in-depth coverage of the most critical concepts. Its practical approach shows the power of organizational behavior theory for understanding one’s behavior and the behavior of others in any organization. Although firmly grounded in behavioral science theory and research, the text is not a compendium of research findings. Champoux includes examples and builds frameworks that make the material clear and easy to understand. The concise format allows the text to be used as a primer or to be supplemented with additional cases, readings, or exercises. More interactive than in previous editions, this text provides students with several online features to reinforce their knowledge of chapter content with exercises, practice and other learning opportunities. An extraordinary supplementary package, all prepared by the author, is innovative and extensive in its content.

Organizational BehaviorSecuring Competitive Advantage

John A. Wagner III and John R. Hollenbeck, both at Michigan State University, USA

Although the management of organizational behavior’s importance should be evident, students often don’t take the course that seriously. One common student response is that organizational behavior is nothing more than common sense. The field of organizational behavior is a valuable source of practical insight that managers can use to improve the workings of their own firms and to thrive where others might fail. Other textbook authors have avoided deep coverage and failed to build any sense of challenge.

John Wagner and John Hollenbeck avoid these pitfalls and challenge students on many levels. They have made the key connection between theory and practice and understand students can excel when challenged to learn something meaningful. Organizational Behavior is written to motivate exceptional student performance. The content requires the student to think and take seriously organizational behavior and why its importance is one of the keys to securing competitive advantage.

Readings in Organizational BehaviorEdited by John A. Wagner III and John Hollenbeck, both at Michigan State University

The readings in the book cover the major topics comprising the field of organizational behavior, and do so with special emphasis on the findings of rigorous organizational research. The models and concepts presented in the following readings are gleaned from literally thousands of studies of behavior in and of organizations. Authors Wagner and Hollenbeck have selected

them to complement their textbook, Organizational Behavior: Securing Competitive Advantage (Routledge 2010). However it would be a worthwhile addition to any course in Organizational Behavior.

The Effective OrganizationPractical Application of Complexity Theory andOrganizationalDesigntoMaximizePerformance in the Face of Emerging Events

Dennis Tafoya

Performance is the reason why organizations exist. Through performance organizations meet the needs of internal and external stakeholders as defined by their mission, goals and objectives. This is true for all organizations. If a retailer won’t stock goods a customer wants, the customer will shop elsewhere. If a religious organization does not meet the needs of its followers, they

leave. If a cult doesn’t meet the needs of its memberships they seek their goal fulfillment elsewhere. If a manufacturing center can’t produce goods that meet customer standards, the customer will reject it.

Complexity theory, a tool used to examine the nature of dynamic systems like organizations, can contribute to our understanding of organizations and ways to improve their performance. The models and material outlined in the book illustrate ways competency and organizational programs, processes and procedures are used to manage emerging risks, threats and vulnerabilities that challenge today’s organizations. Collectively this information enables the identification of individual organization profiles as a way to advance our understanding of an important theory, complexity, in an applied setting -- organizations.

Unique typologies describing organizations (four types), events that effect organizations (six types) and the fundamental structure for organizations are presented to enable the forecasting of an organization’s capacity to manage different events as they emerge and how behavior organizes around these events. Academicians studying organizations and practitioners interested in improving them can use this information to facilitate baseline, descriptive thinking and analysis or more sophisticated examinations aimed at understanding the dynamic nature of organizations as fully functioning systems.

At the heart of the effort is the examination of what it takes to get the performance needed to achieve a vision or mission and why, despite planning, training and evaluation, few organizations can guarantee or maintain desired levels of performance when faced with events, routine to extreme, that shape their existence. Particular emphasis is placed on understanding how knowledge, evaluation, information and, communication management practices need to be tailored to fit particular organizations rather than treated as a ’one size fits all’ approach. These are not limited, theoretical discussions but are presented as ways to efficiently talk about an individual organization’s profile or competencies within a class of, or in contrast to, other organizations.

The Ambidextrous OrganizationThe Strategic Management of Learning, Knowledge, and Innovation

Patrick Reinmoeller, Erasmus Universiteit, Rotterdam, the Netherlands

There is a growing interest in ‘ambidextrous’ organizations that can achieve harmony between the opposing demands they face internally and externally (such as exploration and exploitation; change and stability; customization and standardization; the development of new competencies and further refinement of existing ones). This interest is being fuelled by

a wider debate and interest in learning and knowledge as engines of organizational growth and sustainable competitive advantage.

Numerous books on organizational learning and knowledge management have appeared in recent years. However, none combines strategy, learning, knowledge, and innovation into a single coherent framework of ambidexterity. This book explores insights from the extensive body of research that has been conducted over the last few years into the issues of exploratory versus exploitative learning, and how to manage the two within the context of an ambidextrous organization. It goes beyond the usual focus on intangible concepts and ideas relating to learning and knowledge, and identifies actionable responses to contextual challenges, and how to develop an ambidextrous firm.

Accessible and practical, this significant text explains key principles, with emphasis on developing students’ understanding of organizational learning, knowledge, innovation, and ambidexterity, and combines them with real-life company examples to illustrate the practical application, utility, and limitations of concepts and theories. For students of strategic management, organizational behaviour and knowledge management this is essential reading.

Complexity and Organizational RealityUncertainty and the Need to Rethink Management after the Collapse of Investment Capitalism

Ralph D. Stacey, University of Hertfordshire, UK

Approaches to leadership and management are still dominated by prescriptions – usually claimed as scientific – for top executives to choose the future direction of their organization. The global financial recession and the collapse of investment capitalism (surely not planned by anyone) make it quite clear that top executives are simply not able to choose future

directions.Despitethis, currentmanagementliteraturemostly continues to avoid the obvious – management’s inability to predict or control what will happen in the future. The key question now must be how we are to think about management if we take the uncertainty of organizational life seriously.

Ralph Stacey has turned to the sciences of uncertainty and complexity to develop an understanding of leadership and management as the ordinary politics of daily organizational life. In presenting organizations as a series of complex responsive processes, Stacey’s new book helps us to see organizational reality for what it actually is – human beings engaged in many, many local conversational interactions and power relations in which they negotiate their ideologically based choices. Organizational continuity and change emerge unpredictably, rather than as a result of any overall plan. This is a radically different picture from the one painted by most of the management literature, which explains ’organizational continuity and change’ as the realization of the global plans and choices of a few powerful executives within an organization.

Providing a new foundation for understanding complexity and management, this important book is required reading for managers and leaders wanting to understand the reality of complexity in organizations, including those engaged in postgraduate studies in leadership, organizational behaviour and change management.

Leadership in OrganizationsCurrent Issues and Key Trends

Edited by John Storey, The Open University, UK

Praise for the previous edition:

’Leadership in Organizations is a particularly thought-provoking book... Storey and his collaborators have performed a valuable service by providing us with a more practical route through what often seems like an almost impenetrable forest of leadership scholarship and debates.’ - The Journal of Industrial Relations

’A useful, well-written, well-edited and thought-provoking book.’ - Human Resource Management Journal

Leadership has proven a tricky beast to pin down and the subject has been approached from a variety of perspectives over the years. The beauty of this textbook lies in its role as an illustrative guide though the wilds of an elusive discipline.

This second edition of Leadership in Organizations: Current Issues and Key Trends offers a balanced combination of theory and practice to provide an up-to-date account of this multi-faceted topic. Looking at the international and comparative aspects of leadership, Storey also discusses new modes of leadership that will be required to steer organizations to success in a recessive environment. Topics include:

•changingtheoriesofleadership

•strategyandleadership

•ethicsandleadership

•leadershipdevelopmentinpublicsectororganizations

•followershipanddistributedleadership

•leadershipdevelopmentinmulti-nationalfirms.

With improved pedagogical features, this new edition is the ideal text for students of leadership studies, as well as practitioners looking to enhance their leadership skills.

Metaphors We Lead ByUnderstanding Leadership in the Real World

Edited by Mats Alvesson, Lund University, Sweden and André Spicer, University of Warwick, UK

We live in a leadership obsessed society. The result is that we assume nearly any social or economic ill can be mended through better leadership. This commitment to leadership is sometimes followed by hero worshipping, wishful thinking and misplaced hope.

Seeking to understand the faith we place in leadership, the authors draw on a number of in-depth studies of managers trying to ’do’ leadership. Six metaphors for the leader are presented: as gardener, cosy-crafter, saint, cyborg, commander and bully. Some of these offer unexpected insights into how leadership does and does not work. The book sheds light on a varied, often contradictory and sometimes darker, side of leadership.

Cutting through the management-speak drenched current literature on leadership, Understanding Leadership presents an enlightening understanding of an important topic which will be useful reading for students and researchers, as well as the thinking manager.

Leadership InsightNancy J. Adler, McGill University, Canada

What do managers need to do to strengthen their capacity to lead wisely and creatively in the 21st century? How can executive’s best envision and implement initiatives that matter? It is clear that today’s leaders need to:

•reflect

•gainperspective

•aspiretoexceptionallyexcitingpossibilities

•inspireothers.

Based on these four fundamental leadership capacities, and drawing from a range of artistic traditions, Nancy J. Adler has created a Leadership Insight journal.

Combining paintings, insights from world leaders, reflective questions, and most importantly, blank pages, the journal is designed to draw managers away from their often frenzied lives and to return them to a deeper dialectic with their influence, and potential influence, on the world. By reintroducing a daily practice of reflection, the journal offers leaders the quiet and contemplation it takes to be wise.

Demystifying Business CelebrityEric Guthey, Copenhagen Business School, Denmark,Timothy Clark,UniversityofDurham,UKand Brad Jackson, University of Auckland, New Zealand

Business celebrities such as Bill Gates, Richard Branson and Rupert Murdoch are among the most widely recognised, admired and sometimes even vilified individuals in the world. Like their celebrity peers from the entertainment, sports, arts and political worlds, business celebrities exert an influence that is pervasive, but difficult to assess, evaluate and explain.

Business celebrities have been around for as long as big business itself, but this is the first book to provide a systematic exploration of how they are constructed and why they exist. Business celebrities include entrepreneurs, CEOs, and management gurus. The book argues that these individuals are not self-made, but rather are created by a process of widespread media exposure to the point that their actions, personalities and even private lives function symbolically to represent significant dynamics and tensions prevalent in the contemporary business environment.

Demystifying Business Celebrity raises questions about the impact and significance of the production of celebrity upon our understanding of, and our ability to promote the practice of leadership in an enlightened manner. The book will prove a useful addition to the enlightened business student’s bookshelf and will be informative reading for all those with an interest in business and management.

Computational Analysis of Firms’ Organization and Strategic BehaviourEdoardo Mollona, University of Bologna, Italy

Series: Routledge Research in Strategic Management

This book addresses possible applications of computer simulation to theory building in management and organizational theory. The key hypothesis is that modelling and computer simulation provide an environment to develop, test and articulate theoretical propositions. In general, computer simulation provides an experimental environment where researchers are able to play with symbolic representations of phenomena by modifying the model’s structure and activating or deactivating model’s parameters. This environment allows to both generating hypotheses to ex post explain observed phenomena or to ex ante generate distributions of unrealized events thereby envisioning areas for further empirical investigations.

Under a methodological perspective, the volume investigates logics and techniques to design a research strategy grounded on computer simulation. In particular, the articles in the book concentrate on two different techniques, and philosophies, to set up a simulation study:SystemDynamics, whichisgroundedondifferential equations and feedback theory, and agent-based modeling. The book describes how computer simulation helps to look into research issues typical to strategic management and organizational theory. In this respect, such themes as firms’ diversification strategies, competitive strategy, rivalry and the impact of role dynamics on organizational performances are explored through the lenses of computer simulation models.

European Works Councils and Industrial RelationsAn Institution in Process

Jeremy Waddington, University of Manchester, UK

The creation of European Works Councils is arguably the most important measure taken in global industrial relations in recent years. Adopted with the primary goal of facilitating European-level workers’ participation in information-sharing and consultation in multinational companies, EWCs have also been central to a wide-ranging process of institution-building at the European level. European Works Councils charts the growth in the number of EWCs and the development of practices associated with EWCs between 1994, when legislation on EWCs was adopted, and 2009, when the initiallegislationwasamended.Drawingonoriginal,large-scale, survey data, the book shows that the quality of information and consultation is generally poor, thus bringing into question the soft touch legislative approach to employee participation of the European Commission.

The reforms implemented within trade union organizations to accommodate the development of EWCs are explored, together with the initiatives taken to extend the role of EWCs beyond information and consultation to incorporate negotiation. Articulation between EWCs and trade union organizations is shown to be integral to EWCs as institutions of information and consultation, and as a means to influence managerial decision-making. Similarly, the development of EWCs is shown to be a process contested by employers’ organizations and managers on the one hand and labour organizations on the other. The character of this contestation ensures that the category ‘EWC’ includes a wide range of institutional forms and practices.

Selected Contents: 1. Setting the Scene 2. The Articulation Activities of European Industry Federations 3. EWC Agreements:TheImpactoftheDirectiveonCoverage,Barriers and Content 4. Visual Culture in OrganizationsTheory and Cases

Alexander Styhre, Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden

’In this excellent book, Styhre displays an impressive depth of knowledge while developing new and exciting epistemological pathways in relation to visual culture. This is not only an important book for business administrators and organizational theorists, but for all of us living in a connected world. This is simply one of the best books of its kind in the field.’ – Mats Edenius, Uppsala University, Sweden

Vision and visuality are two concepts widely discussed and debated in philosophy and social science literature. Some authors even suggest that the entire Western intellectual tradition is strongly shaped by the paradigm of vision; the inspection and analysis of specimens collected from social reality are regarded as the only legitimate source of truth. However, in organizations, a variety of visual practices are employed for science-based innovation in for instance the pharmaceutical industry and in architect work. Such visual practices include the use of various technoscientific machinery and tools to more mundane uses of full-scale models and photos in architect work. In comparison to the various linguistic perspectives on organizations, vision and visuality remain surprisingly little theorized and examined in the organization literature.

Visual Culture in Organizations offers an introduction to the literature on vision and visuality that is relevant to organizational theory (comparing and contrasting it to the well-documented area of linguistic theory in organizations), proposing a theoretical framework for visual culture in organizations, and providing empirical illustrations to the theoretical framework. The book shows that visual practices are a central procedure in the day-to-day routines of organizations and are long overdue for close examination.

Selected Contents: Part 1: Epistemologies of Vision 1. Introduction: From the Lexical to the Visual 2. The Visual Turn in Social Science and Organization Theory Part 2: Practices of Seeing 3. Storytelling and Antenarrative in OrganizationsEdited by David M. Boje, New Mexico State University, USA

Pioneering thinker in organizational communication DavidBojeherecompilesacollectionofnewessaysonthe theme of ‘antenarrative,’ or non-linear narrative, as applied to organizations and business, bringing together different approaches and philosophical interpretations of the concept. The essays combine a strong theoretical background with empirical cases as diverse as Wal-mart, information systems, and Nordic banking.

Organization and management studies have overwhelmingly focused to date on rational narrative structures with beginnings, middles, and ends, where narrative has proved to be a handy concept in qualitative studies – such as in the analysis of interviews or in understanding an organization’s history and identity. Far less attention is given however to the more spontaneous and ‘non-staged’ storytelling that occurs in organizations. The collective and joint storytelling of everyday conversations and interactions in business is less well understood, but is arguably vital to an organization’s dynamics and ability to cope with change.

Imagining BusinessPerformative Imagery in Organizations

Edited by Paolo Quattrone, Christ Church, Oxford University, UK, Nigel Thrift, University of Warwick, Chris McLean, University of Manchester, UK and Francois-Regis Puyou, Audencia, Nantes Management School, France

The modern business relies extensively upon myriad images and pictorial representations such as budgets, schedules, reports, graphs, and organizational charts. Visual images play such an integral role in the process of organizing that many modern managers have come to take them for granted. This book provides a new disciplinary space in which to experiment and capture the significant role that images and other forms of engagements play in the performance of the organizational activities that make business possible.

Images are often seen as simple representations of what happens in organisations: thus financial reports are believed to enable readers to see the ‘true and fair view’ of a firm’s financial transactions. Contributions to this volume challenge this orthodox view to explore how images in business, organizing and organizations are ’performative’ rather than simply representational, viewed in a static and rigid form. Imagining Business addresses the question of how we visualise organizations and their activities as an important aspect of managerial work, focusing on practices and performances, organizing and ordering, and media and technologies. Moreover, it aims to provide a focal point for the growing collection of studies that explore how various business artefacts draw on the power of the visual to enable various forms of organizing and organizations in diverse contexts.

Insidious Workplace BehaviorEdited by Jerald Greenberg

Series: Applied Psychology Series

Insidious Workplace Behavior (IWB) refers to low-level, pervasive acts of deviance directed at individual or organizational targets. Because of its inherently stealthy nature, scientists have paid little attention to IWB, allowing us to know very little about it. With this book, that is now changing. The present volume—the first to showcase this topic—presents original essays by top

organizational scientists who share the most current thinking about IWB. Contributors examine, for example, the many forms that IWB takes, focusing on its antecedents, consequences, and moderators. They also highlight ways that organizational leaders can manage and constrain IWB so as to attenuate its adverse effects. And to promote both theory and practice in IWB, contributors also discuss the special problems associated with researching IWB and strategies for overcoming them.

Leading Under PressureFromSurvivingtoThrivingBefore,During, and After a Crisis

Erika H. James, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, USA and Lynn Perry Wooten, University of Michigan, USA

The global workforce is under tremendous pressure. At a macro level, there is the pressure of worldwide competition and the need to operate across the globe. At the micro level, there is pressure of individuals or departments to produce more with increasingly fewer resources. Pressure is at once the precipitator and the consequence of crisis. Leaders who can flourish under pressure

will be the ones to guide us through these and future turbulent times.

It provides the student with real-life examples from managers (based on interviews with people who experienced discrimination) that help students understand how gender discrimination operates,

even when there are legal protections against it. At the end of each case study, students are asked to put themselves in the shoes of the individual experiencing the discrimination and ask themselves to reflect on how they would handle the situation. Students must examine their own beliefs about gender and work place practices and consider consequences of actions they might take. Coaching Models: A Cultural PerspectiveAGuidetoModelDevelopment:ForPractitioners and Students of Coaching

Diane Lennard, New York University, USA

’In addition to providing an extensive analysis of strategies for changing performance and the factors that can impact coaching effectiveness, this book offers what may be a unique value: instead of promoting one approach as the best, Dr. Lennard guides readers through a highly customized process of developing our own individualized coaching

model. As a result of the book’s thought-provoking activities, I strengthened my own sense of personal authenticity and saw new ways to coach and collaborate fully with employees who may have very different perspectives.’ – Tita Theodora Beal, Learning & Development, Pfizer, Inc.

’This is a wise book. The essential take-away is simple and profound. Develop, refine, and apply your own (as in ownership) personalized coaching model. Much is provided; nothing is imposed. Readers are invited to reflect on unique and defining experiences, strengths, values, perspectives and style and to begin creating their own ‘work in progress.’ Coaching Models will be a compelling read for experienced coaches and new coach practitioners alike.’ – Bethene LeMahieu, Ed.D.; Professional Coach and Conversation Conservationist

Coaching Models encourages and assists students and practitioners of business coaching to develop and apply their own coaching models. The entire field of coaching will benefit from having coaches who use their models to continually improve their practice.

The first part of this book presents the model development process by looking at the relationship among culture, beliefs, and behavior in the coaching context. It explains the importance of identifying cultural factors that influence the way coaches approach coaching interactions, and their coaching models.

The second section provides coaches with information and strategies for developing personalized coaching models, applying them to specific contexts, and reflecting on their interactions to refine their core coaching practices.

The third part describes the evolution of the author’s own coaching model—the Performance Coaching Model—and illustrates how one coach incorporates unique perspectives and sets of skills, knowledge, and experience in her coaching practice.

Workplace LearningConcepts, Measurement and Application

Edited by Marianne van Woerkom and Rob Poell, both at Tilburg University, the Netherlands

’A significant ensemble of workplace learning articles by leading international authors that will make a notable contribution to the field.’ - David McGuire, Queen Margaret University, UK

This edited volume aims to evaluate the promises of workplace learning by addressing the following related questions: What are current developments in theory that informs workplace learning research? How can learning in the workplace be measured? What is the impact of various organizational settings (e.g. team-based work and call centres) on workplace learning? Which are the promising new avenues for research? And which research-based recommendations can be made to boost learning opportunities in various work contexts? The topic is conceptualized as an interaction between the individual and the work context, as a combination of individual and collective processes, as a link between cognition and action, and as a political process.

With a wide array of contributions from academics such as Stephen Billet, Tara Fenwick and Victoria Marsick, this volume will be an important research and reference tool with all those academics and practitioners who are interested in the field of human resource development.

Targeted at researchers, (post) graduate students, and reflective practitioners and managers interested in the area, ’Workplace Learning’ provides must-read material for anyone wanting to advance the theory, research, and/or practice of learning in the workplace.

Managing Healthy OrganizationsWorksite Health Promotion and the New Self-Management Paradigm

Mikael Holmqvist and Christian Maravelias, both at Stockholm University, Sweden

Duringthepasttwodecades, corporatemanagementhas come to take an active role in health promotion programming for employees, offering health education, screenings, therapy, and even leisure initiatives. However, little attention has been given to how contemporary worksite health programs in fact blur the traditional distinction between work and private life. This has resulted in little research on the other side of the work-health nexus: how employers factor health considerations into workforce management and productivity control.

With the advancement of ’work-site health promotion’ in contemporary organizations, Holmqvist and Maravelias argue that this narrow focus, and the typical uncritical standpoint towards initiatives which are taken in the name of employees’ health, is inadequate. At a more fundamental level, the advancement of work-site health promotion may be a sign of a new or altered corporate health ethic: in contrast to the old corporate health ethic that was narrow and specific to the workplace, the new corporate health ethic appears to judge the ‘whole employee’ and especially what the whole employee may become; the risks one faces and the abilities one has to shoulder the responsibility for developing into a real corporate value. The authors suggest that health experts’ work is closely aligned with problems relating to the general management of organizations. Through a focused appraisal of this central albeit neglected occupational group in management studies, this book tries to explore and understand in some depth situations and experiences that are of general interest and concern in our society.

Gender and the Contours of Precarious EmploymentEdited by Leah F. Vosko, York University, Canada, Martha MacDonald, Saint Mary’s University, Nova Scotia, Canada and Iain Campbell, Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Australia

Series: Routledge IAFFE Advances in Feminist Economics

’For both its empirical and its theoretical content, this book is an essential addition to the libraries of scholars of gender, of work/life balance, and of what the editors prefer to call ‘precariousness in employment’ - Anne Junor, University of New South Wales, Australia

Precarious employment presents a monumental challenge to the social, economic, and political

stability of labour markets in industrialized societies and there is widespread consensus that its growth is contributing to a series of common social inequalities, especially along the lines of gender and citizenship.

The editors argue that these inequalities are evident at the national level across industrialized countries, as well as at the regional level within federal societies, such as Canada, Germany, the United States, and Australia and in the European Union. This book brings together contributions addressing this issue which include case studies exploring the size, nature, and dynamics of precarious employment in different industrialized countries and chapters examining conceptual and methodological challenges in the study of precarious employment in comparative perspective.

The collection aims to yield new ways of understanding, conceptualizing, measuring, and responding, via public policy and other means – such as new forms of union organization and community organizing at multiple scales – to the forces driving labour market insecurity.

Modern Labour EconomicsPeter Sloane, Paul Latreille, Nigel O’Leary and Philip Murphy, all at University of Wales, UK

Labour economics as a discipline has changed dramatically in recent years. Gone are the days of a ’job for life’. These days, firms and employees are part of a less regulated, more fluid, and more international labour market and knowledge, training, human resource development and human capital are all major factors on the contemporary scene.

This new textbook is the first properly international textbook to reflect these changes. Its key areas of concentration include:

•theincreasingimportanceofhumancapitalincludingeducation and occupational choice

•themajorsubdivisionofpersonneleconomicsincluding economic inactivity and absenteeism

•comparativecrosscountrystudiesandtheimpactofglobalization and migration on national labour markets

•equalopportunitiesandissuesofdiscriminationonthebasis of race, gender and disability.

Other issues explored include the supply and demand of labour, wages, the current role of trade unions and working time. The book is written in a clear, accessible way with some mathematical exposition, reflecting the text’s grounding in current microeconomic theory.

The New Psychology of LeadershipIdentity, Influence and Power

’An amazing book, that completely changed my mind about leadership. It’s a double treat: a new theory and a new set of empirical regularities. That the theory makes intuitive sense and that the data fit the theory is just a bonus. I expect that this new, systematic approach to this important topic will attract scholars from many disciplines.’ -

Rafael di Tella, Harvard Business School, USA

This landmark text provides an overview of the new understanding of leadership that has emerged in the last two decades in social and organizational psychology, as part of the development of self-categorization and social identity theories. The New Psychology of Leadership advances the argument that leadership is a group process grounded in the creation, management and control of group identity — a shared sense of ‘us’.

Management HistoryText and Cases

Morgen Witzel, University of Exeter, UK

Management History is not simply a book about the history of business or even the history of management. The goal of this book is to demonstrate that despite the relative newness of management science as an academic subject, management has been around since ancient times. Through understanding the history of management - both in practice and theory - one is able to approach the

complex and challenging problems of modern management from a new perspective.

The book not only traces the development of management from history to the present day, but also examines the way this evolution impacts how management is practiced today and how it may develop in the future. It incorporates case studies from around the world cutting across a range of time periods, from theEgyptianroyaltombbuildersofDeirel-Medina,toH.J. Heinz, Cadbury Brothers and Tata Steel.

Management History is ideal for instructors wishing to incorporate historical content and analysis into management education courses, modules, and training programs, particularly at the MBA level and higher.

Labour-Intensive Industrialization in Global HistoryEdited by Gareth Austin, London School of Economics, UK and Kaoru Sugihara, Kyoto University, Japan

Series: Routledge Explorations in Economic History

This volume calls for a major rethinking of our understanding of industrialization for global history, by bringing the East Asian experience of ‘labour-intensive’ industrialization into focus and, thereby, reinterpreting both the western experience of ‘capital-intensive’ industrialization and the equally distinctive experiences of countries in other regions of Asia and in Africa and Latin America. We argue that the absorption of labour into ‘labour-intensive’ industries, both traditional and modern, and the improvement of the quality of labour formed a central mechanism of global diffusion of industrialization.

This volume presents a discussion on the significance of labour-intensive industrialization by leading economic historians engaged in the development of synthesizing theses and/or specializing in relevant regions, and seeking to foster the new academic dialogue on global economic history.

Industrialization in the GulfA Socioeconomic Revolution

Edited by Jean-Francois Seznec and Mimi Kirk, both at Georgetown University, USA

Series: Routledge Studies in Middle Eastern Economies

In recent years, we have witnessed huge economic and socio-political change in the Gulf. This book examines the rapid industrialization of the region and how local economies are starting to diversify away from petroleum, exploring how this transformative process is starting to impact on the region’s economy and social make-up.

With contributions from some of the top scholars and practitioners in the area, this book discusses crucial topics related to the region’s transformation, from issues of economic development and relations with Iran to foreign labour and women’s education and work outside the home. Chapters explore how in addition to the massive growth in investments and products such as oil, gas, chemicals, metals, and cement, this growth has triggered numerous societal changes, such as labour migration, educational reforms, declining natality, and shifting gender roles.

Covering in detail a broad range of issues, this book will appeal not only to Middle East experts, particularly those with an interest in the Persian Gulf, but also to development experts and political scientists.

International Corporate GovernanceA Comparative Approach

Thomas Clarke, University of Technology, Australia

Corporate governance has changed and developed a good deal in recent years. Thomas Clarke’s International Corporate Governance offers a comprehensive guide to understanding corporate governance as a discipline, and does so with a style and panache that can be lacking in many competitor texts.

While the popular structure has been retained, significant changes have been made to take account of the implications of the global financial crisis, the relevance of the post-GFC new regulatory order and corporate governance in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, South America, and Africa. In this cutting edge new edition, Clarke extends an already excellent range of case studies to include Lehman Brothers, AIG, Royal Bank of Scotland and UBS, as well as updating classic case studies in light of recent events. New textbook features include student questions to assist with assessments, as well as a new and impressive companion website.

Already a popular textbook, this new edition of International Corporate Governance will prove essential reading for all students of corporate governance, whether advanced undergraduate, masters or executive.

European Corporate GovernanceReadings and Perspectives

Edited by Thomas Clarke, University of Technology, Australia and Jean-Francois Chanlat, University of ParisIXDauphine,France

For decades, Europe has sought to become more financially integrated with the United States and thus European legal institutions, regulatory, governance and accounting practices have faced pressures to adapt to international competitive markets. Against this backdrop, European corporate governance systems

have been criticized as being less efficient than the Anglo-American market based systems.

This textbook examines the unique dimensions and qualities of European corporate governance. Reforms of key institutions, the doctrine of shareholder value and the seemingly irresistible growth of CEO power and reward are critically analyzed. The book brings out the richness of European corporate governance systems, as well as highlighting historical weaknesses that will require further work for a sustainable corporate governance environment in the future.

In light of the most severe financial crisis since the 1930s, this intelligent look at European corporate governance is a vital textbook for courses on corporate governance and a great supplementary textbook on a host of business, management and accounting classes.

Good BusinessExercising Effective and Ethical Leadership

James O’Toole and Don Mayer

This illuminating and practical collection of essays addresses the increasingly important topics of corporate ethics, social responsibility, and sustainability in the context of effective global business strategies. Instead of condemning business, or exhorting corporate leaders to ’do good,’ the authors deal with the ’hot button’ issues of our time in a cool and rational manner,

seeing them as opportunities rather than as problems. As the authors illustrate, there is no necessary trade-off between business leaders doing the right thing, on one hand, and the profitable thing, on the other. They demonstrate that ethics is not peripheral, or in addition to, the central concerns of business. To the contrary, ethics and good citizenship are at the heart of all good business strategies, decisions, and organizational cultures. These essays offer useful examples of how executives can create strategies and cultures that are, both and at the same time, ethical and effective-the essence of good business.

Ethical Dilemmas in ManagementChristina Garsten, Stockholm University, Sweden and Tor Hernes, Copenhagen Business School, Denmark

This exciting new text engages with the issue of ethical dilemmas encountered in different organizations. Rather than exploring the definition of ethical conduct, this book focuses on the way in which the process of organization produces dilemmas of ethical behaviour. Using illustrative accounts from corporate settings as a basis, the book explores the conditions that lead

to ethical dilemmas and the strategies organizations adopt to deal with these dilemmas or steer away from them. The book suggests that ethical dilemmas are often dealt with by directing attention away from the core problem, rather than engaging with and solving it.

This is a fascinating text, which raises important questions and provides a deeper understanding of the dynamics of ethical processes. A company’s ethical behaviour is a major criterion by which the company, its products and services are judged and is therefore crucial to sound management in today’s organizations. Ethical Dilemmas in Management is essential reading for all students of business and management and ethics.

Organizational Transformation for SustainabilityAn Integral Metatheory

Mark Edwards, University of Western Australia, Business School

Organizational Transformation for Sustainability offers some innovative answers to the big questions involved in organizational sustainability and the radical changes that organizations will need to undergo as we move into the third millennium. This new approach comes from the new field of integral metatheory.

Duringthe21stcenturyorganizationswillundergoalevel of radical and global change that has rarely been seen before. This transformation will come as a result of the environmental, social and economic challenges that now confront organisations in all their activities. But are our understandings and theories of change up to the task of meeting these challenges? Will we be able to develop sustaining visions of how organizations might contribute to the long-term viability of our interdependent global communities? Organizational Transformation for Sustainability: An Integral Metatheory offers some innovative answers to the big questions involved in organizational sustainability and the radical changes that organizations will need to undergo as we move into the third millennium. This new approach comes from the emerging field of integral metatheory.

Edwards shows how a ’Big Picture’ view of organisational transformation can contribute to our understanding of, and search for, organisational sustainability. There are four key themes to the book: i) the need for integrative metatheories for organisational change; ii) the development of a general research method for building metatheory; iii) the description of an integral metatheory for organisational sustainability; and iv) the discussion of the implications of this metatheory for organisational change and social policy regarding sustainability. This book brings a unique and important orienting perspective to these issues.

Clearly written, this has become the textbook of choice in this increasingly important field.

The New Public Governance?Emerging Perspectives on the Theory and Practice of Public Governance

Edited by Stephen P. Osborne, University of Edinburgh, UK

‘Stephen Osborne is to be congratulated for assembling an impressive array of contributors and producing a text which makes a major contribution to the debates about this emerging paradigm.’ - Robert Pyper, Glasgow Caledonian University, UK

’This book showcases the best writing on ‘public governance’, bringing together new research in institutional analysis, policy dynamics, and government-society relationships. It provides a good balance of conceptual insights and empirical analysis grounded in the large changes evident in advanced countries in recent decades.’ - Brian Head, University of Queensland, Australia

’This text, edited by Stephen Osborne, may do as much for critical insight to Europe’s public service delivery as the David Osborne and Ted Gaebler text on Reinventing Government did for the United States in the 1990s in refocusing the public sector for improvement.’ - Dean F. Eitel, DePaul University, USA

Despitepredictionsthat’newpublicmanagement’wouldestablishitselfasthenewparadigmofPublicAdministration and Management, recent academic research has highlighted concerns about the intra-organizational focus and limitations of this approach. This book represents a comprehensive analysis of the state of the art of public management, examining and framing the debate in this important area.

Marketing Management and Communications in the Public SectorMartial Pasquier and Jean-Patrick Villeneuve, both at Swiss Graduate School of Public Administration, Switzerland

International in approach, this text provides students, practitioners and scholars with a thorough overview of the major concepts and tools in marketing and communication as they can, and should be applied in the public sector, giving readers an exclusive and decisive analysis of public sector marketing.

It provides an overview of the possibilities and limits of the

application of these concepts and their corresponding tools in the public sector. For if the specificities of the public sector are numerous, it is probably with the concepts of marketing and communication that boundaries are easiest to miss, often leading to their inappropriate use. These specificities are the pillars of this book.

If the realities of the public sector are key to any understanding of marketing and communication, the international scene is the only possible ground to truly explore their various possibilities. This book is key reading for all students of marketing with an interest in the public sector.

Public Management and Complexity TheoryRicherDecision-MakinginPublicServices

Mary Lee Rhodes,TrinityCollegeDublin,Ireland,Joanne Murphy, Queen’s University Belfast, UK, Jenny Muir, Queen’s University Belfast, UK and John A. Murray,TrinityCollegeDublin,Ireland

That public services exhibit unpredictability, novelty and, on occasion, chaos, is an observation with which even a casual observer would agree. Existing theoretical frameworks in public management fail to address these features, relying more heavily on attempts to eliminate unpredictability through increased reliance on measurable performance objectives, improved financial and human resource management techniques, decentralisation of authority and accountability and resolving principal-agent behaviour pathologies. Essentially, these are all attempts to improve the ‘steering’ capacity of public sector managers and policy makers.

By adopting a Complex Adaptive Systems (CAS) approach to public services, this book shifts the focus from developing steering techniques to identifying patterns of behaviour of the participants with the ultimate objective of increasing policy-makers’ and practitioners’ understanding of the factors that may enable more effective public service decision-making and provision. The authors apply a CAS framework to a series of case studies in public sector management to generate new insights into the issues, processes and participants in public service domains.

Social Accounting and Public ManagementAccountability for the Public Good

Edited by Stephen P. Osborne, University of Edinburgh, UK and Amanda Ball, University of Canterbury, New Zealand

Social accounting as a discipline has challenged the methodology and focus of the larger field of accounting over the last 50 years. More recently it has taken on greater significance for other subjects as well, addressing issues for public policy and management more broadly. These include the issues of the nature of accountability in the contemporary plural state, environmental and societal sustainability, the ethical management and governance of public services and resources, and the creation and sustenance of social capital as an essential element of the modern plural state.

Social Accounting and Public Management brings together for the first time researchers from a range of disciplines including accounting, political science, management, sociology and policy studies to discuss and develop our knowledge and theory of the nature of ‘accountability’ in contemporary global society and the challenges it may pose for public policy and management. This book addresses this nexus of all of these issues and disciplines, and through this, makes a contribution to the development of the disciplines of both social accounting and public policy and management.

Voluntary Organizations and Public Service DeliveryEdited by Ian Cunningham, University of Strathclyde, UK and Philip James, Oxford Brookes University, UK

The outsourcing of public services to voluntary, not-for-profit organizations has proven an important part of public sector reform during the last three decades across most industrialised countries. These moves to accord the voluntary sector a greater role in public service delivery inevitably means that the nature of its relationship with government, and place in the State more generally, is undergoing a process of change. To date, much of the debate about the desirability, or otherwise, of these changes has focused attention on how far it will improve efficiency and quality of services and the degree to which it will undermine the independence of the organisations themselves. Very little attention has however been paid to the implications for the employment policies and practices of voluntary organizations and the work experiences of those working for them.

Voluntary Organizations and Public Sector Delivery provides a systematic examination of how these, and other, aspects of voluntary sector employment are being affected by its engagement with the growing trend to the market-based outsourcing of the delivery of public services. The volume draws together a team of expert contributors to explore how the process of outsourcing is impacting the internal and external labor markets of voluntary organizations, and the implications for the policy objectives underlying the externalization of the delivery of public services to them.

Understanding E-GovernmentInformation Systems in Public Administration

Vincent Homburg, Erasmus University, the Netherlands

Governments these days often boast about the efficiency of their electronic systems. Information communication technologies (ICTs) apparently allow public service to become cheaper, faster and more democratic. E-government has become another buzzword, the shining future of the public realm. Critics claim, however, that ICTs’ potential for democratic renewal is hampered

by ancient assumptions of how governments should function. But which viewpoint is nearer the truth?

In this original and insightful volume, Vincent Homburg demonstrates how the use, form and impact of ICTs are, in fact, entwined within the socio-political, economic and institutional aspects already established by government and public administration. Evangelical or fatalistic perspectives are discredited to show the different realities in which ICTs play a role in our daily lives. Using case studies and vignettes from throughout Europe and the US, the book analyzes what these new technologies actually do, and how they are screened through varying layers of bureaucracy and convention.

This is a timely addition to our understanding of what is meant by e-government, getting behind the political rhetoric. Understanding E-Government will be key reading for all students of public administration, political science, organization theory and information systems.

Nonprofit OrganizationsAn Introduction

Helmut K. Anheier, University of California, Los Angeles, USA

Praise for the previous edition:

’Helmut Anheier is to be applauded for producing a pioneering text that is packed with scholarly reflections covering a broad intellectual canvas.’ - The Times Higher Education Supplement

‘For the first time in one volume, Helmut K. Anheier, one of the founders of nonprofit studies, brings together the main theories, concepts and research findings from this important inter-disciplinary research field. This clearly-written book will be a valuable guide for students, researchers and policy makers alike.’ - David Lewis, London School of Economics, UK

’For students navigating the largely uncharted territory of nonprofit theory, Anheier’s comprehensive book will be a welcome resource. And for nonprofit leaders who want to understand their sector better, it presents a big-picture view of nonprofit theory, policy and management. Both will benefit from this important and impressive work.’ - William P. Ryan, Harvard University, USA

In this new edition of his popular textbook, Nonprofit Organizations, Helmut K. Anheier has fully updated his comprehensive introduction to this field. The text takes an international perspective, detailing the background and concepts behind these organizations and examining relevant theories and central issues.

Anheier covers the full range of nonprofit organizations – service providers, membership organizations, foundations, community groups – in different fields, such as arts and culture, social services, education. He introduces central terms such as philanthropy, charity, community, social entrepreneurship, social investment and public good. Acknowledging and explaining how the field spills over from public management, thorough nonprofit management and public administration, the textbook is systematic in its treatment of theories, management approaches and policy analyses.

This book takes the reader behind the scenes of the world’s greatest arts institutions and, through case studies and interviews, explores the uniqueness of arts leadership. Social Work Management and LeadershipManaging Complexity with Creativity

John Lawler, Bradford University, UK and Andy Bilson, University of Central Lancashire, UK

Management and leadership are increasingly important within the organisation and delivery of social care services and now form part of the post qualification framework for social workers. Yet, whilst there is a relatively broad understanding of management concepts and their application in social care, their foundations often go unchallenged both by

students and managers. Furthermore, leadership is open to a wide range of interpretations and is often ill-defined with the expectation that we share a common understanding of the term.

This text promotes an appreciation of the development of management and leadership thinking and the different themes which inform current ideas. It considers these topics from a range of theoretical standpoints in order to stimulate readers to consider their own experience and expectations of management and leadership. It then demonstrates how these standpoints might promote innovative approaches to management and leadership within social care organisations and ways in which such organisations might then develop. The aim of this challenging text is to encourage critical and informed reflection on current practice.

Social Work Management and Leadership is essential reading for students of management and leadership in social care as well as being an invaluable resource for managers who simply wish to consider new approaches to their practice.

Managing Voluntary Sport OrganizationsEdited by Leigh Robinson, Loughborough University, UK and Richard Palmer, British Olympic Association

Contemporary sport could not function without the involvement of voluntary organisations, from local grass-roots clubs to international agencies such as the International Olympic Committee. Management of this sector continues to undergo profound change, largely in response to the challenges of professionalisation and increasing expectations in terms of transparency, accountability and ethical behaviour. This book fills a significant gap in the literature on sport management by setting out the principles and practices necessary for effective management of voluntary sport organisations around the world.

In addition to applying and adapting established management strategies and techniques to voluntary sport organisations, this book is the first to fully relate mainstream organizational theory to this important sector of sport management. With contributions from an international team of researchers and management practitioners, the book explores key functional areas such as:

•governance

•strategyandplanning

•humanresources

•finance

•managingchange

•marketing

•eventmanagement

•riskmanagement.

Each chapter discusses best practice and includes case study material, self test questions and guides to further reading. As the only book to outline a professional, theoretically informed and practically focused curriculum for voluntary sport management, this book is essential reading for all students of sport management and all managers working in or alongside the voluntary sector.
