A Thuismitheoirí:

Developing literacy in Irish centres on three main areas:

understanding words;

understanding sentences; and

understanding longer texts.

Word work focuses on ‘High Frequency Words’, those very common words

that occur quite often in any language. Word work also focuses on

phonics, the sounds that letters and groups of letters make.

An important part of sentence work focuses on punctuation, which words

have capital letters, where does the full stop and question marks go.

Text work focuses on understanding what the words and sentences mean,

in the context of a story or information.

This series of homework books helps the children build on what they have

learned in school, by giving them the opportunity to reinforce and practise

what they have learned in class. The homework over the weeks follow

similar patterns so as to ensure that children and parents understand

what the task is.

Typically, therefore, the week’s Irish homework should look something

like this:

Monday – High Frequency Words

Tuesday – Phonics

Wednesday – Punctuation

Thursday – Comprehension (answer the question)

Please check the appendix at the back of the book for a translation of

the task your child has each night.

If you feel that the homework in this book is too difficult or too easy,

please speak to your class teachers about it as it is vital that homework,

while important, does not negatively impact on your child’s attitude

towards school or become a cause of distress each night.
