BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Community

Our Board of Directors celebrates the best year yet for the Outer Banks Community Founda-tion. In 2015 we awarded more than $600,000 in grants and scholarships to our community, thanks to our generous donors!

1

What’s your passion? What’s that one cause that compels you to action,

that motivates you to give as generously as you can, that inspires you like nothing else in this world?

Perhaps it’s a love for children, or animals, or the arts, or helping our veterans, or feeding the hungry. Perhaps you received assistance at some point in your life, from a teacher or pastor, or through a scholarship or support organization, and your great desire is to pay that assistance forward. Or perhaps your dream is to honor a loved one by leaving a legacy in his or her name.

Maybe you have a specifi c, favorite charity that has enriched your life — perhaps a beloved church, an alma mater, or a favorite park or historic site. Or maybe there is one organization — or several — that is tackling an issue that particularly touches your heart.

At the Outer Banks Community Foundation, our community is our passion, and our commitment is to helping donors with whatever their charitable interests might be.

The Outer Banks Community Foundation is a means, not an end. We are a tool for philanthropists of all sizes and all interests, across our Outer Banks, to leave a legacy and to support the causes that inspire them. We help donors identify their charitable goals, understand local needs, and create customized, perpetual funds to support our community today, tomorrow, and forever.

On the pages that follow, we recognize and thank all of our 2015 donors, remember any persons they honored or memorialized with their giving, and enumerate the names of all their benefi ciaries — the wonderful and deserving nonprofi ts, students, and causes they supported last year.

Every single name in this report has a story to tell, a story of generosity and love, and a passion to help others. We are delighted to share with you some of our favorite stories and photographs from 2015, and only wish we had room to print all the amazing stories of compassion and inspiration that we see every day.

What’s your story? What’s your passion? What legacy for our community do you wish to leave behind you?

Please don’t hesitate to call your Community Foundation if we can help plan and facilitate your giving.

Community FoundationABOUT THE

The Outer Banks Community Foundation is a public charity that

connects people who care with causes that matter. Founded in 1982, the Community Foundation helps donors meet local charitable needs in Dare County and across the Outer Banks, from Corolla to Ocracoke, by targeting grants and scholarships toward our community’s most pressing needs and promising opportunities.

The Community Foundation manages a collection of undesignated charitable funds, grant-making funds, nonprofi t endowments, and scholarship funds, created by different donors at different times for different purposes. Donors may create funds during their lifetime or by bequest, for general charitable purposes or for a particular cause or organization that they specify. The Community Foundation provides tailored services to help individuals, families, businesses, and other groups pursue their charitable goals easily, effectively, and with maximum tax benefi t.

Through our Community Enrichment Grants Program, the Community Foundation is the venture capitalist of our local charitable sector, supporting the Outer Banks’s most exciting and most urgent charitable projects. The Community Foundation is a catalyst, helping the nonprofi t sector evolve to take on new challenges and opportunities as they arise. The Community Foundation also manages designated endowments on behalf of

nonprofi ts, providing those groups with sustainable, easy funds for whatever their needs might be.

Through our Scholarship Program, the Community Foundation has helped 1,400 local students pursue their dream of a college education. The Community Foundation is the largest and most diverse scholarship provider in our area, awarding both need-based and merit-based scholarships to the future leaders of our country.

The Community Foundation’s perpetual endowments are a resource for today and tomorrow. With the Outer Banks Community Foundation, people who love the Outer Banks can give back to the community they love to help meet today’s pressing needs, while building a source of support for future generations.

A favorite nonprofi t…

A cause that touches your heart…

Scholarships for young people…

Or the Outer Banks in general…

Whatever your charitable passion, we can help you plan your giving, leave a legacy, and establish a perpetual endowment to support the cause or nonprofi t that inspires you most. It’s easier (and less expensive) than you think.

We offer a range of funds to help you achieve your goals:

• Designated: To benefi t your favorite nonprofi t organization.

• Field-of-interest: You name a broad charitable cause (e.g., education, senior care) and leave the grant- making to us.

• Donor-advised: You choose the grants we award each year. Great for families!

• Scholarship: To help local students attend the college of their dreams.

• Unrestricted: Our most fl exible fund, for donors who wish to help the Outer Banks but don’t have a specifi c cause or charity in mind.

So what is an endowment? It’s a perpetual fund that supports your designated charitable cause, now and forever. We invest your contributions and give out the earnings each year in grants and scholarships, in accordance with your wishes. You enjoy signifi cant tax benefi ts, naming rights for your fund, publicity (or anonymity, if you wish), planned giving support, and comprehensive administrative, accounting, and investment services.

Most of our endowments start at $5,000, which can be contributed over three years. You can also open a fund with a future planned gift. All donations are tax-deductible.

ho are these students? They are from every background, every neighborhood, with all variety of

interests and passions. We support artists and engineers, firefighters and tennis players, aviators and cheerleaders. We help graduating high school seniors who have their lives ahead of them, and adults who are going back to school to get a job. There are students at the very top of their class, and students who work so hard just to pass. But they all share that dream of improving their lives through education.

Who makes these dreams possible? You do – all of our donors who have built and grown our 45 diverse scholarship programs. We would like to introduce you to two very special donors, and how they have helped to make the dreams of two very special Zacharys come true.

Stewart Couch, Dream-Maker for the UnderdogStewart Couch will long be remembered as the community

leader behind Hatteras Realty and countless local projects. Stewart was also known for his extraordinary generosity, so no one was surprised that his final will included a $160,000

bequest to the Community Foundation to start a perpetual scholarship fund for Hatteras students. What makes this scholarship so different is its emphasis on the “underdog,” on that one student who might have otherwise been overlooked, but who could really excel if just given a chance. Even better, Stewart’s gift was combined and magnified by memorial gifts raised by the Outer Banks Association of Realtors after his passing.

Zachary Warren was our first

recipient of these combined funds. Raised by a single mom, Zac is the first to attend college in his family. And Zac truly values education; his English teacher wrote us about a time that Zac hitchhiked to school, when other kids would have used any excuse to play hooky. In fact, Zac worked hard in and out of school, working multiple jobs since age 14 to help his family, and volunteering hundreds of hours at his church skate park and youth center, mopping floors, taking out trash, and mentoring younger kids. (See our cover photo.)

Zac wants to be an English teacher and wrote to us about his desire to come back to the Outer Banks after college to teach in his community. Zac is studying education at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and his first year of school was covered by the Stewart Couch Scholarship and the Scott Day Family Scholarship, another Community Foundation award that was established in memory of a beloved Hatteras teacher.

Ruth Medgyes, the Quiet Dream-MakerOur scholarships are as diverse as the donors who created

them. In contrast to Stewart Couch, few people knew of the

Aspiration. Hope. Goal. Desire. Wish. Every year, in their scholarship applications, students use these words to tell us their dreams of attending college.

The David Stick Legacy Society recognizes those individuals and families who have named the Outer Banks Community Foundation in a will, trust, insurance policy, retirement account, or other type of deferred or planned gift. These generous folk are truly leaving a legacy for all future generations on the Outer Banks. The Community Foundation gratefully recognizes the following Legacy Society members.

DAVID STICK LEGACY SOCIETY

generosity of Ruth Jewell Kennedy Medgyes, a former librarian and editor who lived in Southern Shores. Through her fi nancial advisor, Ruth anonymously gave over $350,000 to charity in her last few years. No one knew it was she.

And when she passed in 1997, Ruth gave the largest bequest received by the Community Foundation to that date: over $1.6 million. Her last gift was given in

memory of her beloved grandfather, Milton A. Jewell, with whom she lived as a child.

From Ruth’s gift, the Community Foundation awards the annual Milton A. Jewell Scholarship, our most prestigious merit-based award, given on the basis of academic excellence, community service, and leadership in extracurriculars. No one fi t this bill better than Zachary Owen, the valedictorian of his 2013 First Flight High School class, who graduated with a 4.78 GPA and a near-perfect SAT score. (He missed one question.) Zack wants to be rocket scientist, and his guidance counselor told us: “Zack will be one of those individuals who will discover a new planet.”

All Milton Jewell applicants are asked to write about a

great challenge or problem facing our world today. Zack wrote about hatred and intolerance. “In high school, many students are teased or excluded from groups because they are different. I know. I have a mild case of cerebral palsy and I never seem to fi t in.” But this young man has never allowed this to defi ne who he is or what he can accomplish. Zack is currently studying Aerospace Engineering at Georgia Tech, and he plays on his school’s fencing team.

Like Mr. Stick’s enduring commitment to our community, your planned gift to the Outer Banks Community Foundation will have meaning and impact for countless years to come. If you would like to be recognized as a member of the David Stick Legacy Society, please contact Lorelei Costa at 252.455.1404.

Behind Zac Warren and Zack Owen, and behind every one of our diverse

scholarship recipients, is a generous soul, helping to make dreams come true for Outer Banks students.

Thank you to those dream-makers.

Zachary Owen, our 2013 Milton Jewell recipient, is pictured here volunteering at NASA Langley, assisting with the Sage III project, a sensor that is being sent up to the International Space Station.

Milton A. Jewell, beloved grandfather to Ruth Jewell Kennedy Medgyes, was an inspiration for her $1.6 million bequest to the Community Foundation. Ruth instructed the Community Foundation to use a portion of her gift for scholarships for Dare County students.

Who can resist this sweet puppy’s face? Certainly not the folks providing such loving care at the Outer Banks SPCA. Finding a forever home for animals in need is their mission, and providing compassionate care in the meantime is their goal. A $7,000 grant from the Community Foundation in 2015 will provide crucial upgrades for cat and dog kennels at the SPCA facility on Roanoke Island. Last year this charity helped over 800 families adopt a pet locally! You can meet these adorable animals and peek at the shelter upgrades at the SPCA Adoption Center in Manteo.

Members of the Monarch Beach Club show off the beginnings of their colorful wall mural in their new art room in Manteo. A grant from the Community Foundation’s Pauline Wright Endowment purchased the art supplies, equipment, and technology for this wonderful program, which provides art instruction, avenues for creative expression, and opportunities for art therapy for folk from Dare County with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Last year, a painting by one of Monarch’s members was featured in the Arts Council’s 18th Annual Mollie Fearing Memorial Art Show.

If you build it, they will come. And they have. The Ocracoke Youth Center received a three-year grant of $82,000 from the Community Foundation for the Ocracoke Community Park, the island’s first-ever ballfield, which today hosts games of soccer, Little League baseball, middle school baseball, varsity high school baseball, and girls’ softball. Want to help maintain this field of dreams for future generations? Anyone can support the park by making a donation to the Ocracoke Community Park Endowment Fund, established last year with the Community Foundation, to provide perpetual funds for park improvements and maintenance.

Above Left: In 2015 Mike Kelly and Team presented a $20,000 check to the Community Foundation — the proceeds from their 22nd Annual Golf Tournament. The Kelly Family Fund has awarded over $250,000 in grants to nonprofits since the fund’s inception in 1997. Above Right: The parents and kids of the OBX Giving for Good Giving Circle donated $8,500 in 2015 to several local nonprofits that their families selected — and they even made one grant to an international charity that provides clean drinking water to families in developing countries.

Give Back to Your Community

Edward Greene (left) and Ray White (right) were recently honored with Champion Awards for the part they played in the founding of the Outer Banks Community Foundation in 1982, and the role they continue to play as two of the organization’s strongest supporters. Both men are members of the David Stick Legacy Society, pledging a planned gift to support our community forever. We cannot thank Ray and Edward enough for all that they do, and all that they have done, for the Community Foundation and for our entire Outer Banks. Photographs by Biff Jennings.
