Differential diagnosis: Patients with deficiency of 

spleen and damp stagnation

may suffer from poor appetite,

general weakness, shortness

of breath after physical

exertion, loose stool, loose

and flaccid muscles, pale and 

 puffy tongue, and soft,

moderate and weak pulse.

 patients with a strongstomach and weak spleen

may suffer from overeating,

dry stool, thirst, dark urine, foul odor in mouth, high blood 

 pressure, red tongue with yellow and greasy coating, and rolling and rapid or wiry and 

rapid pulse. And patients with disturbance of Chongmai (thoroughfare vessel) and 

Renmai (conceptional vessel) may suffer from frequent urination, soreness and 

weakness of waist and legs, irregular menstruation with less uterine discharge, obese

abdomen and buttocks, pale and puffy tongue, and deep and thready or soft and 

thready pulse.

Treatment: 

Foot massage: The massage is applied to spleen (34), Stomach (15), kidney (22),

lower abdomen (37), thyroid gland (12) and pituitary gland (4) reflecting areas (Fig.

75).

Foot acupuncture: 

Mefidianal acupoints: At Jiexi (ST 41), Neiting (ST 44), Xian'gu (ST 43), Gongsun(SP 4), Shangqiu (SP 5) and Taibai (SP 3) acupoints, a balanced reinforce-reducing

technique is applied and the needles are retained for 20 minutes. Yinbai (SP 1), Dadun 

(LR 1), Taichong (LR 3) and Taixi (KI 3) acupoints may be added for patients with

disturbance of Chongmai and Renmai, and moxibustion after acupuncture may be

applied to all patients except those with strong stomach and weak spleen.
