Obesity Stats
- 58 Million Overweight; 40 Million Obese; 3 Million morbidly Obese
- Nearly 34 percent of adults in the U.S are obese, more than double the
percentage 30 years ago-Hispanic and black children have
higher rates than non-Hispanic whites.
-In New Jersey, 20-24% of adults are obese
Gout Stats-more than 2 mil Americans are
associated w/ Gout-More common in men than women
-Prevalence is nearly 840 out of 100,000 people
-Women face the attack of Gout post-menopause
-Nearly 18% people suffering with Gout have this disease in their family
history-An obese person is 4 times
more likely to get gout than a non obese person
-Gout is a complicated form of arthritis, characterized by sudden & severe attacks of joint pain. The affected joint becomes tender, so that pressure on this joint is unbearable
-Symptoms include intense joint paid, lingering discomfort, & inflammation and redness,
-Gout is caused by a build up of urate crystals around your joints, formed by high uric acid levels in the blood. The body cannot process buildups, thus causing sharp, needle-like urate crystals in joints and surrounding tissues
-Risk factors for the disease are lifestyle choices, such as alcohol use, untreated high blood pressure, certain medicatons, family history, obesity, & age/genderHow are Obesity and Gout Linked?
-When a person is obese, it causes extra pressure on joints, and there are chemical changes in the body due to the excess fat changes
-These 2 factors increase Gout risk
-People with higher BMI have increased uric acid levels, thus leading to buildup in the joints

DID YOU KNOW?
1.5 million HEART ATTACKS occur in the United States each year with 500,000 deaths.
WHAT IS A HEART ATTACK?It’s when blood vessels that supply blood to the heart are blocked, preventing enough oxygen from getting to the heart. The heart muscle dies or becomes permanently damaged.
SYPMTOMS•A tight band around the chest •Bad indigestion •Something heavy sitting on your chest •Squeezing or heavy pressure •Light-headedness, dizziness •Nausea or vomiting •Shortness of breath
WHY IS OBESITY RELATED?
Because of the high level of fat in a person with obesity they are at a higher risk of heart attack. The fat effects blood circulation and blood pressure. They are more likely to develop hypertension or high blood pressure. If left untreated high blood pressure will cause the heart to over work and will make the heart muscle very weak. The blood vessels will harden, raising the chances for a blood clot to form, which in turn increases the risk for a heart attack or stroke.
About 33.3% of American men and about 35.3% of American womenare OBESE.
(n) - Blount's disease is a growth disorder of the shin bone in which the lower leg turns inward, resembling a bowleg.
Obesity Statistics•Over 40 million Americans are obese•Over 58 million Americans are overweight•Over 3 million Americans are morbidly obese•Almost 25% obese adults were obese in their childhood. •the percentage of obese or overweight children is at or above 30 percent in 30 states.
The causes of Blount’s disease
is unknown
Symptoms•One or both of the
lower legs turn inward. •This is called "bowing.“•It may look the same
on both legs •Occurs just below the
knee • The pain will rapidly
get worse
When people are obese, the area that is just below the knee experiences constant abnormal compression due to all the weight. For children, this decreases the ability to produce bone cells and expand. However, the area outside the knee expands normally and causes the tibia to bend inwards from the top down.
Blount’s Info•More common in
obese/overweight
children•Predominately found in
females.•Popular among African
American children

The United States obesity The United States obesity percentage is over double percentage is over double the world average.the world average.
Different Types of O.R.C.
Cancer risk factors affect both treatment options and mortality rates. The American Cancer Society (2008) reports that about 14 to 20 percent of cancer deaths in the U.S. can be attributed to excess weight or obesity problems.
Although scientists have found no direct cause of why cancer forms from obesity. Though some suggest that it depends on the location. For example the obesity raises estrogen levels, which could be a reason for uterine cancer in women. Also obesity increases the risk of gastro esophageal reflux disease (a known risk of esophageal cancer).
A general description of obesity related cancer is very simple. There are about 15 cancers that are believed to be cause be obesity. How they are created is not necessarily known.
-Persisting pain in specific region
-Weight Loss
-Fatigue
-Jaundice
-Nausea
-Vomiting
-Loss of appetite
- Obesity- In proper eating habits- Poor physical activity- Poor Circulation
Description:
-is a disease of the immune system that causes red, scaly patches on the skin.
-the elbows and knees are the most commonly effected area.
Symptoms :
-emotional stress
-injury to skin
-different types of infections
-reactions to certain drugs
Causes:
-certain immune cells are activated and produce to much of a protein called Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF).
-this protein can causes skin cells to grow quickly resulting in skin build up. Risk Factors:
-obesity and arthritis
Psorasis Statistics:
-As many as 3.2 million Americans are living with undiagnosed psorasis. (2008)
-Psorasis affects 125 mllion worldwide. (2008)
Relation to Obesity:
-people with psorasis have higher levels of the obesity related hormone leptin.
Obesity Statistics:
-From 1980 to now the amount of obese children has tripled to 17%.
-In 2009no state met the Healthy people 2010 target of 15%.
Psychological DisordersObesity can be
inherited and passed
down through
generations.
Low Self-Esteem
patterns of behavioral or psychological symptoms that impact multiple life areas and/or
create distress for the person experiencing these symptoms
Depression
Even positive events such as graduating, getting
married, a new job can lead to depression Body Image
People whose bodies are their primary concern often realize a distorted body image. They focus too much on their image and
what other people think of it, this leading to a variety of problems including eating disorders and low self-esteem.
Low self-esteem leads to people feeling extremely insecure, not confident, and they
cannot control their actions. It is often cause by negligence, criticism, and body
image.
Obesity can be connected to psychological disorders because the obese population lacks
confidence in themselves, thus triggering their low self-esteem. Because of this low self-esteem caused by their distorted body image, people become extremely upset with themselves and can often
enter the state of depression. This can also come from social ridicule in the
workplace and the lack of ability to perform every day tasks.
Depression is identified as loss of interest, passive mood, feelings of guilt, low energy, and poor concentration. Depression can become chronic and may in some instances lead to suicide or tragic fatality. It affects more than 20 million people each year.
*Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the leading cause of deathin the United States for men and women.
*FROM 2007-2009 THE OBESITY RATE RAISED 1.1%
*In 2009, only Colorado and the District of Columbia had a
prevalence of obesity less than 20%.
Coronary artery disease or (CHD) is a narrowing of the small blood vessels that supply blood and oxygen to the heart.
SYMPTOMS
-Chest pain is the most common symptom
-May feel like someone is squeezing your heart
-Other symptoms include shortness of breath and fatigue with activity
CAUSESSmokingHigh blood pressureHigh cholesterolDiabetes
RISK FACTORSHigh (LDL) & (HDL)DiabetesSmokingHigh blood pressureObesityPhysical inactivityPoor diet
PREVALENCEAccording to the American Heart Association, coronary artery disease is the single leading cause of death in AmericaMore than 12 million people alive today have a history of heart attack or angina pectoris (chest pain)
Plaque can narrow or completely block coronary arteries, reducing the flow of oxygen-rich blood to the heart.
When damage occurs, the body starts to heal, fatty tissues are released which causes plaque to build up where the arteries are damaged
Obese people have a 105% higher risk for CAD/ heart failureObesity heightens the amount of cholesterol in the blood, causing the artery walls to accumulate plaque and thus leading to CADObese people are also at higher risks for all of the risk factors that exaggerate CAD symptomsBY CARRIE
PORT
In 2009, only Colorado and the District of Columbia had a prevalence of obesity less that 20%.
Symptoms:-morning headaches-restless sleep-loud snoring-forgetfulness-mood changes-insomnia
Sleep Apnea is a sleep disorder that occurs when a person’s breathing is interrupted during sleep. When people have Sleep Apnea (untreated) they may stop breathing during sleep which means the brain and the rest of the body will not get enough oxygen. Sleep Apnea can also cause respiratory problems, asthma, and Obesity Hypoventilation Syndrome.
According to the National Institutes of Health, over 12 million Americans are affected by Sleep Apnea.
Apnea means “without breath”
Sleep Apnea & Obesity:Excess weight can lead to Sleep Apnea. Extra fat and soft tissue in the body can lead to a blockage in the airway which increases the chance that the airway passage will collapse. Sleep Apnea can also lead to asthma because of trouble breathing at night time which could lead to having to sleep with a nebulizer or a CPAP machine. Asthma causes the airways to spasm which can also cause the airway to collapse. Although Sleep Apnea and Obesity aren’t directly related, the two conditions can aggravate each other.
Obesity hypoventilation syndrome (OHS) results when the body doesn't’t receive enough oxygen during sleep and does not eliminate carbon dioxide during sleep.
PCOS affects approximately 10% of women ages 12 to 45
Of the 50 states and
the District of
Columbia, Mississippi
was ranked 2010’s
most obese state for
the fifth consecutive
year. Colorado was
named the leanest
state for the second
year in a row. New
Jersey was ranked the
tenth leanest.
Unknown but it is thought that the following play a role: excess insulin, low-grade inflammation, heredity, abnormal fetal development, obesity.
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome,
or PCOS is one of the most
common hormonal disorders
among women of
reproductive age. It is
considered one of the leading
causes of infertility in
women. Polycystic ovaries
(enlarged ovaries that
contain several small cysts)
are often a sign, however not
all women with polycystic
ovaries have PCOS, nor do all
women with PCOS have
polycystic ovaries.•Irregular menstrual cycles
Excess male hormones
•Acne
•Polycystic ovaries•Infertility
The benign cysts that classify ovaries as polycystic ovaries form due to an overproduction of follicle stimulating hormone as well as abnormally high production levels of luteinizing hormone. The obese are significantly more likely to stimulate high levels of these hormones, leading to this syndrome. More than half of those diagnosed with PCOS are also obese.

Alzheimer’s disease is a
brain disease that causes
memory loss and issues
with thinking and
behavior.
As of 2009 medical costs of obesity are as high as $147 billion. On average, persons who are obese have medical costs that are $1,429 more than persons of normal weight.
Symptoms of Alzheimer's disease are short term memory loss, disorientation, lack of motivation and difficulty performing familiar tasks. Severe symptoms can result in paranoia, hallucinations, wandering, difficulty swallowing and smiling, and inability to communicate or recognize other people.
Obesity is directly related to Alzheimer’s in causing more issues for people who have this disease. Inflammation in the brain, caused by high insulin levels, causes beta-amyloid protein to increase. These proteins are in plaque that clogs the brain of people with Alzheimer’s Disease. Insulin increases when one gains more weight. Therefore people who are obese tend to have high insulin levels which causes these proteins to clog the brain.
Dementia is a loss of brain function that occurs with certain diseases, Alzheimer's being the most common type of Dementia.

Where osteoarthritis typically occurs :
In 2009, no state met the Healthy People 2010 obesity target of 15%, and the self-reported overall prevalence of obesity among U.S. adults had increased 1.1 percentage points from 2007. Tiny cracks develop in the cartilage, which splits further forming clefts & fissures. These are nature's way of trying to help the damaged joint by allowing the load through the joint to be redistributed.
Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis. It is degenerative and is caused by wear-and-tear of a joint over time.
About 21 million people in the U.S are affected by OA
OA often develops as a result of obesity because of the extra weight and pressure put on the joints.
Symptoms include chronic pain, loss of mobility, and stiffness.
