As if to make up for the break through December 2012, Raintree was packed for our double author meet and speak iBrowse event on the 11th January 2013..

Library

Members were amazed with twelve year old Vindhya Vishwanath’s confidence levels in answering questions put to her by the gathering. Having read over 500 books and starting really young as a toddler in the UK, Vindhya’s dad revealed that he and his wife always encouraged her to read and when she began to write it was mum Veena who turned her hard copy, pen and paper scribbles into ‘soft copy’ for the editors and publishers.

Before this, however, seeing an opportunity to get children to interact with a young author and possibly kindling in them an interest in writing, a special session for kids only was arranged in the library which now wears a new look and has a whole lot

of books and games for kids. Refreshments were provided and Vindhya very happily interacted with the children present and parents and grandparents who encouraged her with their views and questions.

Later, I introduced my new novel called ‘Above the Ricefields of Pilerne’ published by Leadstart which is set in Goa, in my little village of Pilerne, in Bardez. Gregory de Nazareth and Gavin Cordeiro introduced the iBrowse members to my book, with readings of passages that I have enjoyed writing. As the blurb says -“Like the famed food and drink of Goa, this family saga is redolent with earthy and piquant flavours.” You will get to read about quaint village customs and get a peek into the Goan ethos, which sadly seems to be slipping away with time. The next iBrowse meet is on 8th February when Giselle Mehta, a former bureaucrat, will be our guest author for the evening with her book “Blossom Showers.” And the book chosen for discussion is ‘ Life of Pi’ a novel by Yann Martel which won the Man Booker Prize and is now a major motion picture.

Do come at 6 pm on the 8th Feb!

The cooking demo by Ms Lubna Bhat ably assisted by Ms Erica Saldanha, went off very well and was well received by those who attended. Her speciality, Chicken Biryani with Brinjal Chutney, was made to appear very easy to prepare and I am sure that some of those who attended would have already made an attempt at its preparation. Many thanks to Lubna for this effort.

We hope to have more of these demos in the coming months, though it may not be possible always to announce them in the news letter. Kindly look out for details on the notice board.

We now have a separate wine menu and I request you to sample the selection and give us your comments.
