Katherine “Kay” was born on March 19, 1931 to Arthur R. and Hazel Marie (Harpham) Todenhoft in Sterling. She grew up on the ranch by the South Platte River with her brothers, Art and Charles. They worked hard on the hog farm with their father. She went with her dad on the train to California to sell the hogs to Armour. Kay loved to travel by train to see relatives in Nebraska and loved all the picnics with Aunt Elly and Uncle Willy and cousins Fred and Bill Venohr. She loved her horse, Maudine, which Dr. McKnight gave her. Kay and Mary Helen McKnight, lifetime friends, loved riding horses together down the South Platte. They had many wonderful adventures. Kay loved music more than anything too. She played piano, loved plays, the Bee Gees and Mamas and the Papas, the violin, and she sang. Katherine became a Christian and brought many of her family members to God. She graduated in 1949 from Sterling High School. Kay met a handsome young man, G.N. Hurst, and they were married on April 30, 1957 in Lawton, Okla. They lived in Oklahoma for sometime and moved to Sterling to raise their five children. Kay did 4-H with her children and when they lived in Padroni she worked at Greenhouse County Hospital and was a secretary at Padroni School. Kay and G.N. were a good team. They built and owned several businesses including HUSO, Hurst CO., Lebsack Feed, H&S Machine, Iliff Farms, and Hurst Farms. Kay was an active member in the First Christian Church, a youth group leader, Bible studies CWF, and Sunday school. She loved God and passed that faith on to her children. Kay loved to play cards and played bridge with her Lady Group for years. She and G.N. had loads of adventures. They traveled to seven or more countries. They had many R.V. adventures as well, especially their Alaska trip. She loved her husband and family and God so much. She had a wonderful heart. We will miss her so much, but she is free of Parkinson’s that has caused her so much pain. Mrs. Hurst was preceded in death by her parents Arthur and Hazel; brothers Arthur Frederick Todenhoft and Charles Richard Todenhoft; Arlene Sommers, Tom Sommers, and Tom M. Sommers. She is survived by her husband G.N. Hurst; children Jenifer and Gordon Felzien, Jean and Clyde Mares, Daniel Hurst, Mary and Joe Gonzales, and Machelle and Randy Grossart; grandchildren April and Joe Potyondy, Amanda and Matt Basinger, Casey Hurst, Jon Christopher Felzien, Nathan Mares, Virginia and Chris Allen, Garrett Walker, Danielle and Steve Gossett, Sara and Devin Newth, Valarie and David Manning, and Marshall Gonzales; 12 great- grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Tennant Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Katherine Helen Hurst
