ASSIGNMENTS FOR UNIT#1: LINE / SECTION 1
Unit #1: Line / Section #1 / Assignment #1 = 4 Complex Patterns
Supplies Needed:
1 piece of 9x12 drawing paper
Pencil w/ an eraser
Colored pencils and sharpener
Ruler
W h y a r e w e m a k i n g p a t t e r n s ?
To learn what a pattern is and how to make a ho-hum boring pattern that you see every day into
an exciting more detailed one that will attract more viewers (and a better grade).
The final project for Unit #: Line requires at least 4 / no more than 6 complex patterns for
the background.
If the patterns you choose are too simple or the choice of colors used for the pattern is
average, then points will be deducted.
o On the other hand, if the pattern is too complicated and the colors are too
distracting, then points will also be deducted.
This assignment gives you the chance to practice (while earning points) before you have
to do this on the final project.

AN EXAMPLE of a SIMPLE PATTERN:
(POINTS) (NO POINTS)
Name Format Directions:
Write your name, hour, class, date, teacher, project name, and media (what is the
project made up of?) in the lower right hand side the back of your 9x12 piece of paper.
It does not matter whether your paper is vertical or horizontal. (Each part is worth 1pt.)
Back
Flip it back over to the front and fold it in half; push down on the fold to make it
permanent. Then fold it in half again creating another crease perpendicular to the first.
Open it up and you have created 4 areas to draw your assignments.
Front
Pattern Directions:
Draw 4 complex patterns that completely fill each given area and color them in using colored
pencils.
Think about craftsmanship and design; no scribbling, fast coloring, or thoughtless/simple
patterns.
Please remember to not have any of the background paper showing through after you
colored. This does not mean you have to press so hard with your colored pencils that
your hand hurts; you can color in something using a light touch, but yet filled in.
Basically if I can see the actual drawing paper through your coloring, that means to me
that you colored quick and dirty just to get the assignment done.
Also please be aware that some paper might have a “tooth” to it; that means it visibly
looks like and sometime feels like a texture on the surface. If this is the case, it will be
impossible to color the background out. Just do your best.
Name Format (here)
Unit #1: Line / Section #1 / Assignment #2 = 6 Hand Outlines (32pts)
Please draw (no tracing) the outside line of your hand in a size that is bigger than your own hand in 6 different, creative, and “appropriate” positions on newsprint paper. Do not just draw the outline of the front or back of your hand lying flat, this position is way too easy to draw. In order to make drawing your hands more challenging, try crossing your fingers, turning your hand to the side, or make a letter in the alphabet using sign language. AN EXAMPLE OF A HAND OUTLINE THAT IS TOO EASY
RUBRIC FOR HAND OUTLINES:
Are your hands drawn larger than they are in real life?(1pt each)
Did you draw six in total?(1pt each)
Is each of the hands drawn in a different position that is more complicated?(1 pt each)
Is each one an outline?(1 pt each) Is the name format in the correct area? (1pt)
Is the correct information given for the name format? (7pts)
1-1-3 = 6 Hand Contour Drawings
Please draw (no tracing) 6 contour drawings of your hand in six different, more complicated positions than before. Each drawing must be larger than your real hand and most importantly, do not pick up your pencil while drawing a contour line. If you do, then you must put your pencil back down on the paper in the spot that you ended at, in order to start drawing again.
RUBRIC FOR CONTOUR HANDS:
Did you draw 6 contour hands? (1pt)
Are the hands larger than real life? (1pt)
Is each of the hands drawn in a different more complex position? (1pt)
Is each drawing a contour drawing? (1pt)
Is the name format in the correct area? (1pt)
Is the correct information given for the name format (7pts)
ASSIGNMENTS FOR SECTION 2
1-2-2 = 6 Ribbons
Please draw 6 different and interesting positions of a single ribbon. Please include front & back
of the ribbon and make sure it twists, folds, loops etc. Ribbons must fill a 9x12 piece of paper
and be at least 1 inch wide except when it folds. Also remember to keep things in proportion; the
ribbon must stay consistent in its size (width, length, and depth) and details. Then add hatching
and crosshatching to show value in the shadows.
1-2-2 = 4 Examples of Hatching and 4 Examples of Cross-Hatching
Please draw two contour hands and two ribbons
