Objects We Keep: Mom’s Wedding Dress Copyright 2020 by Karen Nicole Johnson Objects We Keep: Mom’s Wedding Dress A mother’s wedding dress seems to hold a curiosity for her daughters. My mom’s wedding dress was no different. My older sister, a forever romantic used to try to shimmy into our mom’s dress but it didn’t fit her. For many years, our mom’s dress was ungracefully rolled into a ball and stored into a mini room behind a door in our parent’s bedroom, a small room we referred as the eaves (not quite an attic space.) Not being a romantic and being seven years younger than my sister, I didn’t think much about my mom’s wedding dress. I did ask mom once - why is your dress rolled into a ball? I knew some women had their dresses carefully preserved and hanging in a closet, not rolled into a ball and jammed into an off-season closet. My mom’s answer was simple, their wedding day was busy, when it was time to change into their going away outfits, she rolled up her dress, put the dress into a bag
