Operating system software

The “boss” software of the computer. The computer must have an operating system in order to operate any programs. You will be learning much more about the Windows 10 Operating System Software in the following lessons of this course.

Introduction to Windows—

Microsoft Windows is an operating system software as mentioned on the previous page.

Purpose of Operating Systems: Operating Systems are in charge of important operations of the system. The operating system coordinates the application software’s interaction with the computer.

Functions Operating Systems Perform:

Manage hardware resources•

Control input and output operations (Examples: keyboard input, mouse movements, displaying to the screen and printing)

•

Maintain the system of files on your system’s disks•

Maintain security•

Load programs and supervises their executions•

What is Windows?

Microsoft Windows Desktop is similar to a physical desktop. It is the "home" location of the computer.

Just as your desk holds your handy tools like paper, pencils, books, references, rolodex, etc. , Windows desktop can be customized for easy access to your most commonly used programs, files and tools. It can also hold shortcuts to your current projects -and you always want to have a garbage can handy.

Below is a sample of a desktop. It has some temporary files, shortcuts to file folders and programs and of course the Recycle Bin.The bottom bar of the desktop is the Taskbar. It has its own set of shortcuts to programs and access to many other tools, settings and programs.

Start Button: Used to access Programs, documents and settings in the computer. - New Button Style and Menu1.

Windows Search: Used to search the computer for Files and Programs. 2.

Cortana: Windows Search Assistant used to answer questions and search the computer and internet. Note: not installed by default on Windows Enterprise edition.

Task View Button: This new button allows users to see all open windows at a glance, create and manage multiple desktops.

Customizable Taskbar Shortcuts: These items are always showing on the Task bar. Users can customize this area to easily locate commonly used programs and files.

Notification Area (System Tray): Shows notifications for some settings and programs. Click the arrow to show more.6.

Date & Time: Shows Date and Time, hover to show day of the week.7.

Action Center Button: This new button, when clicked, shows a pane with notifications and access to many settings. Not installed by default on Windows Enterprise edition.

Desktop Peek Button: This item will “Peek” or “Show” the desktop when hovering. Right click change options.9.

What Can I do?

Click the Picture or Program Name – To open a blank document in that program.•

Search for anything – Even though there is no curser in a search box, just start typing and searching will begin•

Use Jump Lists – Right click a tile to show jump list for that program•

Pin a program to Start Menu – Right click the program “pin to “Start menu”. •

Access common files –•

Get Help – Click the Help and Support Item on the Start Menu•

Shut down, log off, Restart. . . •
