OBHG Observer – Winter 2016 1

After months of collaboration, planning, and fine-tuning, we are excited to announce that the highly anticipated online provider portal will be available shortly. The Ob Exchange, a new and interactive online tool, will serve as a source of news and information relative to you, your peers, and the OB community at large. Our goal is to provide a forum that promotes communication and transparency while providing the resources you need to focus on providing the highest-quality care.

Soon, you will be able to access the Ob Exchange, your gateway to news, events, tools, and discussion boards designed especially for you. You will find articles helpfully organized by topic, as well as links to commonly accessed tools: ADP; PatientKeeper®; OBHG University; our new scheduling software, Momentum; OBHG social media forums; and more!

The Ob Exchange discussion boards are designed to allow you to post topics relative to your team, programs in your region, or the entire OBHG community. You may opt to receive notifications for any discussions that you create or are following each time a colleague posts a response. The discussion boards are the perfect place for hospitalists to exchange information, share best practices, and gather vital feedback.

The Ob Exchange has been designed with the input of several of our clinicians as an easily accessible resource with a user-friendly feel. You can have productive peer-to-peer conversations, learn about upcoming events, register for training opportunities, and read about the latest happenings across the OBHG organization.

While exploring the Ob Exchange, we hope you will take advantage of the social media-inspired ‘My Page’ feature, which will allow you to post career accomplishments, your educational background, life events, and other profile information. This will include a ‘search’ functionality to enable you to locate and connect with former colleagues or classmates who also have chosen OBHG as their professional home.

As we continue to add functionality and build a robust source of information, we encourage you to keep checking back regularly for added features! In the coming months, we will be implementing: a document repository for all policies, procedures, and forms at your fingertips; an FAQ section; additional training modules; feedback on your specific program and individual performance; a ‘pulse’ question to gauge your employment experience, and much more!

Our priority is to ensure that Ob Exchange offers the content and functionality that support you as a hospitalist. A panel of physicians will convene regularly to review the portal and provide feedback so that we meet your needs in the easiest,

most-efficient manner possible.

OBHG Observer – Winter 2016 2

Team, While long-ago days of Mardi Gras parades and college football games at Louisiana State University (Geaux Tigers!) reside in my distant memory, the unique Louisiana experience will always be a part of me. Thousands of members of the Tiger family stay connected through more than 130 alumni chapters worldwide and a monthly LSU Alumni E-letter. Years later, I have the privilege of working in a similarly unique culture at OBHG, and my job is to help all of us work smarter and stay connected using the latest business technology and software.

Being part of a fast-growing company with a life-saving mission for more than five years, I have had the opportunity to work with a talented team of hard-working professionals. Over the past several months, the Physician Engagement and Information Technology teams have been working diligently to build our new physician portal, the Ob Exchange.

I am excited about the upcoming launch of the Ob Exchange, as many of our providers have told us that they want a way to connect with their peers while having a consolidated place to be informed of news and upcoming events. I know that this portal also will be an important part of our organization’s IT infrastructure, as it will be the foundation for several other applications. The Ob Exchange will dynamically enable our hospitalists to effectively communicate, collaborate, and support one another.

Based on feedback from our providers, the Ob Exchange will contain several great features and topics of interest. The portal also will be used as a valuable tool connecting individual provider teams, OBHG peers at other hospital locations, and to help them stay informed regarding the latest OBHG news.

The portal’s “My Page” feature will appear very much like the social media environment we are used to. It will be the online meeting place where our hospitalists can build profiles sharing their professional background and educational history, as well as milestone events in their careers and lives. You might even find a fellow OBHG hospitalist who went to the same college you attended.

I think the preeminent benefit of the Ob Exchange will be the ability to collaborate with peers. It will give our physicians a vehicle to blog, ask clinical questions, read industry news, and stay in touch with their peers. To meet the needs of our busy hospitalists, the portal will be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

It’s almost here. We’re still tweaking the portal to ensure maximum functionality. Very soon, the Ob Exchange will make its highly anticipated debut. I strongly encourage you to log in and meet our newest member of the OBHG family of resources.

Sincerely, Tama LeBlanc Vice President of Information and Technology

AcknowledgmentsLetter from Tama LeBlanc Vice President of Information and Technology Team Leads Gaining ‘Momentum’

OBHG is excited to announce that Team Leads across the country now have access to a new software program called Momentum. Momentum helps these leaders better manage and monitor personnel scheduling. It facilitates the development of staffing schedules that maximize efficiency as well as adhere to OBHG guidelines and policies. Provisions built into the software include tools to maintain fairness and consistency for each scheduling block and to ensure that physicians receive their committed number of shifts. With staff scheduling simplified, Team Leads will be able to focus on other performance metrics and related facets of their jobs.

Southern California Hospital Debuts OBED In Pasadena, California, Huntington Memorial Hospital's Maternal Child Health Services recently celebrated the grand opening of its new Obstetrical Emergency Department (OBED), which is dedicated solely to obstetrical patients presenting to the hospital for care. In an OBED, pregnant women are rapidly seen and evaluated by a Board Certified obstetrician. Within 30 minutes, a medical screening is performed and the patient’s disposition determined. Huntington Hospital’s OBED is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week by at least one Board Certified, hospital-based obstetrician.

Huntington Hospital’s OBED and laborist program is the realization of a vision shared by Paula Verrette, MD, senior vice president, quality and physician services, and James Macer, MD, Board Certified OB/GYN. Because of their dedication, and the commitment of the entire Maternal Child Health Services department, Huntington Hospital patients now have immediate access to the best obstetric surgical care possible to provide emergency, life-saving care for mother and baby.

Jennifer Castaldo, associate chief nurse executive and clinical director, maternal child health services and James Barber, MD, cut the ribbon for the new OBED at Huntington Hospital.

How robust is the data we collect? The department has completed the audits for Q1, Q2, and most of Q3 for 2015. The audit encompasses 12,567 inpatient deliveries from 2013 through available audited data for 2015. We now have quality metric data for 55 hospitals, with Sarasota, Rancho Springs, North Mississippi, and Memorial Hermann-Katy added most recently.

• the GBS Prophylaxis rate has dropped again slightly due to low delivery volumes in some of the newer programs. This should rebound as the programs mature and volume is annualized. episiotomy rates are slightly higher. a particularly large increase was seen in one florida hospital. OBhg’s rates have dropped dramatically over the past two years, and it remains a focus of our hospitals, so this important initiative needs to be communicated as we bring on new providers.

the Joint Commission announces that the threshold for mandatory reporting of their Perinatal Core Measures will change from a minimum of 1,100 births annually to a minimum of 300 births per year, effective January 1, 2016. “This expanded threshold means that all Joint Commission-accredited hospitals with 300 or more births per year will be required to collect data and report on all five measures in the PC core measure set. This new threshold will encompass more than 80% of accredited hospitals with birthing units.”3

Kaiser Permanente plans to acquire group health Cooperative.2 This acquisition will allow Kaiser to expand to another region (Seattle) within its eighth market – Washington State.
