tion Review Book should prove of value to anyone interested in a general review of medical-surgical nursing. A total of 1,500 multiple choice questions are asked in this first volume. Along with each question are two numbers, one indicating a reference and the other the page in that reference where the topic is discussed, should the reviewer wish to delve into a particular problem more deeply. The questions are well written and seem to give a well rounded review of medical-surgical nursing.

OBSTETRIC NURSING MANUAL AND CONFERENCE GUIDE by Anne D. Kri- vacek, R.N., The Macmillan Company, New York, 1965. Price $3.00.

The author states that this manual “has been designed to assist the student nurse in obstetric nursing and in reviewing the entire area of maternity and infant care.” To ac- complish this end, she has prepared a work- hook divided into eight parts which survey social mores, anatomy and physiology. fetal development. pregnancy. the birth of a baby, postpartal and new horn care, and the his- tory and trends of obstetrics. sections have brief introductions; others have not. The sections are primarily com- posed of questions, completion statements, and true-false items. Following each section is a vocabulary exercise and reading refer- ences. The author feels that the instructor may use this manual as a tool to supple- ment course content, promote learning, and check teaching effectiveness. The work sheets may also be used for quiz purposes.

All of the sections are comprehensive except for the unit on pregnancy. This seemed too limited, and did not include sufficient emotional or psychological aspects. Patient teaching regarding preparation for labor, delivery, anesthesia, and so on is not sufficiently discussed, although the author may have felt that these would be adequate- l y presented in course content.

With w o r k h o k s , i t is difficult to accom- plish question techniques on higher cogni- tive levels, or to produce correlation of facts and practice. Most of the facts are given, but missing are many of the theories and presently used methods of achieving opti- mum patient teaching, effective communica- tion, and the family-centered aspect of ob- stetrics. These, however, are not necessar- ily essential if the manual is used only as an adjunct for specific factual information.

Obstetrical complications are covered rather briefly, and the survey of toxemia, cardiac disease, and erythroblastosis seemed inadequate. There is an excellent review of the hemorrhagic problem, the premature in- fant, and symptoms of illness in the new- born.

As a stimulus to further research on the part of the student, and a reference aid for the instructor, the manual could be an “ex- cellent addenda for your course in obstet- rical nursing.”
