Sleep Apnea

The Greek word "apnea" literally means "without breath."

Sleep apnea is an involuntary cessation of breathing that occurs while the patient is asleep.

Apnea is defined by American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) as the cessation of airflow atleast for 10 seconds.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea

• Obstructive sleep apnea, or OSA, arises from what is basically a mechanical problem. During sleep the patient's tongue falls back against his/her soft palate, and the soft palate and uvula fall back against the back of the throat, effectively closing the airway.

Result: When the sleeper expands the chest to inhale, no air enters the lungs.

OSA -Treatment

Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is now the first treatment for obstructive sleep apnea in most people. CPAP is delivered by a machine with a tight-fitting face mask.

Surgery: Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) -- to remove excess tissue at the back of the throat. This surgery has not been proven to completely clear up sleep apnea. Long-term side effects are also possible
