Dear Chamber Members:
We have been very busy coming up with new ideas, new committees and are working hard to make the Chamber a resource for your business, a way to meet new clients, make a few new friends and a way to stay con-nected to the community.
The following is a brief synopsis of what’s been gong on in your Cham-ber:
Financial news: We operate the Chamber on a very tight budget, just like any other business. We do our best to keep the cost of our events to a minimum to encourage participation and community involvement. Sev-eral of our large events are coming up and the proceeds of those events is what keeps the Chamber afloat, so we really need your support.
Our Business Manager, Penny Daniels, has been out of the office due to an illness. She is on the mend and we hope Penny is back in the office soon. In the meantime, we have been fortunate to have the assistance of Kim Blanda. Kim has been instrumental in keeping the office running smoothly. We truly appreciate her efforts.
The office sends e-mail blasts frequently containing our calendar of events and the calendar is published monthly in Ocean Today. In case you have missed those opportunities to see what’s going on, here’s a list:
May 20 at 5:30 - Chamber Members and guests are invited to the Mille-nium Radio (The Point, 101.5) at 2401 Route 66, Ocean. Meet and Great Radio Personalities. Food and Beverages will be provided by our hosts and the theme for the evening is Social Media Bootcamp – Networking. Please call the Chamber office to make your reservations. This is a free event, so we hope to see many of you there.
Our Business Expo is May 26, at the Sheraton. Sponsorship opportunities are available, but selling fast. Contact the office for further details. We have booths available, but space is limited. Look for our e-mail blasts and advertisement in this edition of Ocean Today.
The Annual Meeting of the Membership will be combined with our Schol-arship Luncheon and Awards Program this year. The event will be an el-egant lunch at the beautiful Deal Golf & Country Club. The date is June 9 and begins on at 11:30.
Other fun-filled events are being planned, so please look for our e-mails and read Ocean Today monthly.
Mark your calendars for Our Annual Golf Outing that will be held on Sep-tember 27 at Deal Golf & Country Club.
We are in the process of updating our web-site and thank you for your pa-tience. Thanks to our intern Diana, from Monmouth University, we have recently created a Facebook page and encourage you to become a fan. Please use our Faceboook page as another source of information regard-ing our events.
Thanks for taking the time to read our condensed meeting minutes. We look forward to seeing all of you at many of our upcoming events and as always, we welcome your suggestions and encourage your participation.
Sincerely,
Kathy

Monmouth County Freeholder, John D’Amico (D), addressed 24 local business professionals about his current and future goals for the county at the Greater Ocean Township Chamber of Commerce’s bi-monthly breakfast meeting.
The meeting was held on Thursday, April 22, 2010, beginning at 8 am in the Culi-nary Education Center in Asbury Park. Freeholder D’Amico spoke at the conclu-sion of the event, from 9 to 9:30 am.
The main issues discussed during the Free-holder’s speech were those regarding the Departments of Health, Education, Human Services, and Economic Development. Human services seemed to be a primary concern among audience members, as there were numerous inquiries about such policies, including low-income and section 8 housing and aid to those who have been laid off from jobs.
Mr. D’Amico’s opening remarks outlined his duties and responsibilities as a free-holder, which he said include dealing with the vastness and complexity of Monmouth County government. He attributed such
intricacy to the wide variety of issues that emerge daily, naming waste disposal, wa-ter supply, court facility maintenance, and upkeep of county roads as just a few of the major concerns.
Two major programs, Mr. D’Amico ex-plained, have been implemented for local businesses, Business Connect and the Of-fice of Business Advocacy.
The Freeholder noted the success of BizConnect, which serves small business owners with technical support. “We have terrific people in Monmouth county and Freehold who offer and provide technolog-ical assistance to small businesses to help them use technology to their advantage,” Mr. D’Amico said.
Healthcare administration reform, through the Freeholder’s direct efforts, has saved Monmouth County $2 million. Addition-ally, layoffs, online auctions, and depart-ment consolidation contributed to a 2010 budget of $143 million, a 1.3 percent increase from 2009, according to Mr. D’Amico.
Economic tribulations were addressed by the Freeholder, who called for stimulation in order to create more jobs. The closing of Fort Monmouth was used as an exam-ple. “There are serious problems with Fort Monmouth, the economy is down, and we are at the risk of losing many jobs…we really need to work toward an economic recovery,” Mr. D’Amico said.
Also discussed was Monmouth County’s newly formed Youth Advocacy Program, which Mr. D’Amico said serves a variety of children, from court-involved, abused, or neglected youth to those with disabili-ties.
The Freeholder seemed pleased with county education systems, noting what he referred to as a positive review of High Technology High School in Lincroft, N.J. “High Tech High School was ranked the fourth best high school in the country,” Mr. D’Amico said.
Principal of the Culinary Education Cen-ter, Michael Sirianni, spoke prior to the serving of the main course, an omelet, sau-sage, pancakes, and home fried potatoes,
which was prepared and served by a team of culinary students. He introduced each of his students, recognizing their separate contributions to the Chamber Breakfast Meeting.
Kathy King, Vice President of Business Development of Central Jersey Bank in Oakhurst and Executive Secretary of the Greater Ocean Township Chamber of Commerce, introduced the Freeholder at the conclusion of breakfast, listing Mr. D’Amico’s career highlights as a Mon-mouth County politician. Some prior offices held include two terms as Coun-cilman in Oceanport, two terms as Mon-mouth County Freeholder, one year as a New Jersey Senator, and Judge of the Su-perior Court of New Jersey.
To find out more about the Freeholder’s plans and policies, and to receive informa-tion about Monmouth County, please visit the county website at www.visitmonmouth.com.
