POLICE are searching for a teenager over an attempted armed robbery at the Shell service station in Wallington Road.

The offender, thought to be aged about 15, walked into the service station on Tuesday evening armed with an iron golf club and demanded the cashier fill up a rucksack with cigarettes.

Detective Senior Constable James Lee of the Geelong Criminal Investigation Unit said that the man entered the premises at about 6.30pm.

“He has approached the casher and placed a golf iron on the consul and he has taken a black backpack off his shoulder and placed it on the counter, said Det Sen Const Lee.

“He has then asked the consul operator to fill it with cigarettes. She has replied ‘you have got to be kidding?’ He has said ‘no, fill it up’.

“She (the consul operator) has then reached under the consul and pressed the alarm button.

“The offender then said ‘you’ve called the cops’ and with that he has grabbed his golf club and backpack and fled. “

Det Sen Constable Lee said the man was wearing a pumpkin coloured balaclava with cut out holes for his eyes and a black windcheater.

He is described as being 1.65m tall and about 15 years of age. He was last seen running towards Bell Street.

Police would like to speak to two women that entered the service station shortly after the incident.

OCEAN Grove’s last remaining Neighbourhood Watch areas are closing down due to a lack of support.

Writing is this week’s Voice Bill Sommers expresses his regret that “Unfortunately, due to the lack of support from and our inability to attract new volunteers, we have to announce that Neighbourhood Watch – Ocean Grove, Areas 39/43 have had to close down.

“It is with great regret that we have to take this step as we have tried very hard to keep Neighbourhood Watch operating

in this area.” The group will however attempt to keep the information ongoing in the Voice once a month.

“Our thanks also go to the many business organisations who have supported us over the many years of our operation. These companies have enabled us to carry the message to the households in our Areas.”

One of the main reasons given for the decline in members is that police that used to attend meetings have been diverted away under new initiatives.

The issue is now likely to be

political with the state opposition pledging “enhance the role of Neighbourhood Watch, and fund a new state headquarters and manager to increase statewide crime prevention activities to make Victoria safer. Funding of $550,000 will be allocated over four years.

“Neighbourhood Watch volunteers are powerful grass-root crime fighters,” said Kurt Reiter, Coalition candidate for Bellarine. “The Labor Government has refused to fund this practical, commonsense organisation, and their soft-

on-crime approach has caused Neighbourhood Watch to waste away because of a lack of support and resources.”

Kurt Reiter said a Coalition Government would also restore access to street-by-street crime statistics for local Neighbourhood Watch groups, to ensure communities could make informed decisions based on crime rates in their areas.

“The Coalition will breathe new life back into Neighbourhood Watch.” Reiter added.

Plovers nestDOG walkers are being urged to help protect a pair of Hooded Plovers and their eggs after they successfully nested along a stretch of beach east of Collendina.Last year was the first time in five years that Hooded Plovers have successfully fledged anywhere between Point Lonsdale and Ocean Grove. The area about a kilometer east of Collendina has been sign-posted and John Murray, a Birds Australia volunteer, has said that dog walkers will give the young birds a chance of survival if they can deter their pets from the base of the dunes in that area. The birds should hatch around the end of this month and would fly the nest by the end of December.

GRACETHE GRACE breast and gynaecological cancer group is meeting in Geelong next Wednesday. The topic will be music therapy and the speaker will be well-known harpist Peter Roberts. Vineyard’s national honour

Wallington fireOCEAN Grove, Wallington and Mannerim CFA were called to deal with a burn off and then a large shed fire at a property in Lings Road last week. Crews were on scene until about 2.30am dealing with the shed fire (pictured left). In the last fortnight crews were also called out to an alarm at a home in Westleigh Court, a car fire on Barwon Heads Road (see story opposite), and as support to a suspected gas leak in Queenscliff.

IT’S celebration time again for the team at Oakdene Vineyards, after accepting a national award for Best Restaurant in a Winery.The vineyards off Grubb Road in Wallington was selected the best at the 2010 National Restaurant & Catering Awards for Excellence. After winning the state category award in August this year, Oakdene Restaurant took out the National award in front of 400 of the industry’s best chefs, restauranteurs and guests last night at the Peninsula, in Melbourne’s Docklands precinct.

Car hits pole and destroys fence

ONE Ocean Grove resident got an unwelcome surprise in his garden on Saturday night. The driver of a Nissan Skyline failed to take a left hand turn out of Aldebaran, hit a power pole and then spun through a garden fence. Police and paramedics attended the accident but neither the driver nor his female passenger needed to be taken to hospital. Police also attended the scene and will prepare a report on what happened.

OCEAN Grove’s Nancy Ward can be forgiven for being a stickler for sending out Christmas cards to friends and relatives.

But sending cards is more than a kind seasonal gesture for Nancy. For forty years Nancy has been involved in selling charity Christmas cards and helping raise funds for dozens of causes.

On October 25 the local charity card shop at Geelong’s Wesley Church in Yarra Street reopened for business, this year supporting

23 charities varying from Barwon Health Foundation and Multiple Sclerosis to Cottage by the Sea and Cancer After Care.

The charity card shop is run entirely by volunteers through the YMCA on a roster. Other Ocean Grove helpers include Jean Johnson and Beryl Bainbridge.

Every charity gets the full value of the cards sold.

Nancy first got involved in selling the cards through the

Royal Children’s Hospital. In the 40 years they have been selling the cards they have made well over $100,000 in the Geelong region.

Nancy still enjoys the fundraising. “I wouldn’t still be there if I didn’t. It’s been a bit of a passion for me. The shop is open on Monday to Friday from 9am to 4pm and on Saturdays from November 13 between 9am and 12noon. It stays open until December 19.

THE Ocean Grove fire brigade attended the scene of a car fire late last month. The car fire was reported at 1.40am on Wednesday October 21 in Barwon Heads Road, Barwon Heads.Police said there were no suspicious circumstances but initial reports said the car was abandoned. There were two trucks from Barwon Heads that also attended the fire.

Forty festive fundraising years

LOCAL Ocean Grove tourist operators can expect a busy summer ahead with the launch of Tiger Airways into Avalon Airport this month, according to Geelong Otway Tourism.

Singapore-based operator Tiger Airways will commence its Avalon operations from November 10.

Geelong Otway Tourism Executive Director Roger Grant told the Voice earlier this month the Ocean Grove and the Bellarine Peninsula region would benefit enormously with the low cost airline carrier coming to Avalon Airport.

Tiger Airways will run regular flights from seven Australian destinations including the Gold Coast, Sydney, Adelaide, Perth, Mackay, Alice Springs and Rockhampton to Avalon Airport.

“There are a lot of good factors for the region in particular Ocean Grove and the Bellarine Peninsula with low cost airline airfares coming in from Tiger Airways at Avalon Airport,” Mr Grant said.

“What we have also found is people like taking multiple short breaks from Melbourne as well.

“It’s normally a strong time of year coming up with the summer approaching, whether it is music

events like the Queenscliff Music Festival (in late November).”

Mr Grant believed the launch of Tiger Airways at Avalon Airport had already seen a boost for the Ocean Grove region.

He said members of the local media in regional Queensland destinations such as Mackay and Rockhampton had visited the Bellarine Peninsula region and spoken highly of Ocean Grove’s scenery.

“We had some media people down from Queensland (with the Tiger launch at Avalon Airport) and they were commenting about a flock of Cockatoos they saw in Ocean Grove when they visited the region,” Mr Grant said.

Meanwhile, Ken Carn, who has managed the Ocean Grove Motor Inn in Wallington Road, Ocean Grove, since December 2009, expects bookings to fill up during

the coming months. The Ocean Grove Motor Inn is

currently undergoing renovations that are expected to be completed next year.

“It normally picks up in December right through to the end of the January – that’s the way it is going at the moment,” Carn said.

“We do though need to get busier that is why we are doing renovations to increase our capacity and improve the quality of the place.”

Carn said the recent UCI Road Cycling Championships held in Geelong throughout September and October saw positive effects for his business.

“We certainly got a rise in September and October, it was busier than normal when the cycling was on,” Carn said.

“We had a tourist from Japan that was over here for the cycling.”

BORN, grew up and educated in Melbourne’s northern suburb of Glenroy in the 50’s and 60’s. It was an area of incredibly rapid growth and change at that time. I remember it going from bread and ice being delivered by horse and cart, the milkman early in the morning and the ‘night man’ coming every Thursday.

The advent of sewer was one of God’s greater gifts to kids who were scared of the dark. We played on the street until the streetlights came on and we knew everyone in the neighbourhood. I collected and bred lizards from the bluestones rocks in the area.

By the time I left home it had an incredible multicultural mix and many of the ‘issues’ related to outer urban areas with poor infrastructure to meet the growth needs. The sense of community was ever present for us at that time. I attended the local primary and high school and was lucky enough to get into Melbourne Uni to eventually complete a commerce degree and teacher training.

Being keen to stay in Melbourne so that I could marry the girl around the corner, the Department of Education saw fit to send me to

Sale!... This was undoubtedly a true act of compassion on their part. Thus began our ‘love affair’ of a difference with the educational bureaucracy that was to stay with me the rest of my working life. (I still married the girl around the corner and together we have raised a family of three daughters and now have four grandsons and a ‘princess’!)

We spent our life teaching and living in country towns around Victoria (Sale, Wedderburn, Stawell and Camperdown) before looking for somewhere ‘quiet’ to spend those restful, relaxing years in retirement. You know…. leisurely walks on the beach, reading a book before lunch, pottering in the shed and garden… In your dreams! In all these towns we were active in the community leading sporting, church and service groups. Great times and no regrets.

We were lucky enough to find a bit of heaven in Ocean Grove which was, at the time, quite overgrown, but a ‘renovators delight with plenty of potential.’

We have converted a small house and an acre block into something like a home and a garden. When we retired from teaching we moved down here at the end of 2003. Along with

renovating the house, adding rooms to attract the family for holidays, and landscaping the whole block we continued our Rotary membership and Uniting Church association.

I also have a keen interest in sport. Whilst not a champion at any I play golf, tennis, and try to run with all with a passion. One day I’ll hit the perfect shot or break a PB of sorts.

I guess retirement is not a good description of our

lifestyle. No doubt there are many who will read this and be able to relate.

Our active community involvement includes being on several committees and groups mostly associated with the Uniting Church and the Rotary Club of Ocean Grove. In being this involved we have come to appreciate one of the true strengths of the Ocean Grove community and that is its sense of community. No matter what we do or

where we go we meet people that are members of several groups contributing not only to the good of those groups but collectively to the whole district; making it a truly welcoming and thriving community. One we would all hope doesn’t get lost in the population growth that is occurring.

To Judy and I coming to Ocean Grove has meant that while we have had a new beginning in some ways

it has been a continuation of our commitment to the community wherever we live.

Ocean Grove is a community with a strong sense of community. It is a true pity that it doesn’t have a real community centre. We have an excellent sports area, which will be enhanced when all sports are centred on the area. We have some excellent parks such as Ocean Grove Park (with its future sound shell), the Nature Reserve and, in the future, the Lookout Reserve. However, we don’t have a central meeting place where groups can meet, where performances and celebrations can be held for all sorts of events. We need a municipal centre (in the old language a ‘town hall’). Such a facility located in the vicinity of the Shell Rd Reserve would give Ocean Grove a ‘physical heart’ to match its ‘social heart’.

Having said what is needed, I still find tremendous pleasure in the beach, strolling the Terrace shops (always finding someone to talk to), the friendliness of the traders and business people and the opportunity to participate in the sport and community activities.

‘This is the place to be’…… (or has that been said before!)

Kinder funding reliefOCEAN GROVE based City of Greater Geelong councillor Jan Farrell has hailed the State Government’s funding of $1.2 million for two local kindergartens in the local region, writes Mark Heenan.

Cr Farrell, who represents the Beangala Ward in Ocean Grove, said the state government contributions of $1 million for the Integrated Children’s Centre at the Surfside Kindergarten and the $200,000 upgrade of the Ocean Grove and District Preschool was fantastic news.

The announcement of the funding grant was made last month by the State Government.

“It is just the best possible

news for the town’s pre-schoolers and their parents,” Cr Farrell said.

Meanwhile State Member for Bellarine, Lisa Neville, said the government grant would also deliver better quality kindergarten programs and offer extended hours to suit pre-schoolers and their parents.

“This funding means a major expansion of the facilities at Ocean Grove to cater for immediate and future demand for kindergarten places - a situation that has been brought about by the population growth being experienced in the Ocean Grove area,” she said.

Chair of the Ocean Grove Kindergarten's Future Committee, Sally-Ann Caligari,

believed the funding grants would help ensure the security of local kinder places for 2012 and beyond.

“With only 9 kinder places left for the whole of Ocean Grove in 2012, increasing pressure from the towns growing population and the 2013 increase in kinder hours to 15 hours a week, this funding is just what we needed,” Caligari said.

“We were given the news on Thursday October 21 by a very excited Jan Farrell.

“This funding equates to the creation of an extra 100 kinder places over the next 3 years, which will hopefully take the pressure off our stressed kinders for the short term.”

Shannan earns Globe for running the showIT may not be a real Golden Globe award but it is the next best thing for Ocean Grove Gloria Jean’s Coffee’s barista Shannan Phillips.

Shannan, normally second in charge, was appointed the relief manager of Gloria Jean’s Coffees Ocean Grove while her hard-working owners took a break and holidayed in America last month.

and managers of the Ocean Grove Gloria Jean’s Coffees outlet, departed for America in September for a three-week holiday only returning home last month.

Shannan managed the coffee franchise from Thursday September 23 to Saturday October 16 period.

Inspired by the Porter family holiday to Hollywood’s Universal Studios, Lisa brought

back a Golden Globe momento award for one of her most reliable staff members while she was in Los Angeles.

“It was my idea, Shannan dealt with lots of stuff while we were away especially with staffing,” Lisa said. “She had to get the Golden Globe for running the store. Shannan absolutely did a great job, we were very impressed when we got back to work this month.” Barista Shannan Phillips.

Free bikes provide plenty of pedal power to local primary kidsI was delighted to present two pupils from Surfside Primary School with free bicycles as part of the Victorian Government’s 1000 bike Ride2School giveaway.Congratulations to the two lucky recipients, Brodey Hamilton and Courtney Mercer who were nominated for the prize by their school for their leadership qualities. All nominees were selected as a reward for either participating in their school bike club or taking part in a bicycle education program.Two students from 500 Government and non-Government schools across the state will receive free bicycles before Christmas as part of the Ride2School 1000 Bikes Student Leadership Reward.We want to give our kids the best start in life and that means getting them off the couch and being more active.Walking or riding to school was an easy way for young

people to get some of the 60 minutes exercise they need every day to stay healthy.These bikes will help the Year 6 pupils who receive them make an active transition to secondary school and hopefully develop riding as a life-long habit. Each child was also given a free helmet.

PARTNERSHIP to help the community: Andy Franks, president of Ocean Grove Golf Club and Noel Emselle, president of the Rotary Club of Ocean Grove with the new Public Access Defibrillator (PAD).

OCEAN Grove Rotary and Golf clubs have worked together to get the seventh Public Access Defibrillator installed in the town. The equipment which talks the operator through a step by step set of procedures when a patient has, or has appeared to go into cardiac arrest, will be available neighbours of the golf club, fishermen or anyone close by. The equipment is said to improve the chances of survival from 3 per cent to 90 per cent. The two clubs went halves on the project.Rotary’s Wal Kelly has championed the project to distribute PADs across the town and is available to speak to groups on their operation.

GENEROUS local shopkeepers, supportive shoppers and the surf club combined to raise thousands of dollars towards a new IRB (Inflatable Rescue Boat) when the Surf Frenzy was held in the town on Saturday. Ocean Grove Surf Lifesaving Club has more than 700 members and provides beach patrols, competitions, nippers programmes and surf and rescucitation training from its base on Main Beach. The club has won 11 consecutive state titles.

Bridging differences

Look back for a moment to 2006. With the State Election just around the corner and the seat of South Barwon rated marginal, the Government was worried. So down to the banks of the Barwon River they came and with much fanfare announced “the heritage-listed, much loved Barwon Heads Bridge has been saved from demolition, with the Bracks Government today announcing the bridge is here to stay”.Michael Crutchfield called it “a win for good old fashioned community spirit”.Mr Hulls said “today's decision will make sure it stays”. Mr Batchelor said “the Government had decided to save the existing bridge from demolition after input from Heritage Victoria and the local community”.Amazing what can be said before an election - for we now know the truth! The historic bridge has been completely demolished and

2 new bridges built (at a cost of close to $50 million) with total disregard for the community and no thought for the long term future of the town.Now move forward to 2010 and another State Election looms. Low and behold the politicians have announced they will be back in town. This time for “a bridge open day celebration” that will include the naming of the new bridges.Firstly I note it is not a “bridge opening” as the bridge is simply not finished yet and in fact the project won't be finished until March 2011.Secondly why do we have to name the bridge? Simply call it the Barwon Heads Bridge as we have always done.But if we must then to have a so called competition that runs for only 1 week seems to not take the issue very seriously. In fact when the current Stakeholder Liaison Group meet recently the

community representatives asked for more time and suggested the issue should not be political and recommended nothing happen until December (after the election).But again we were not listened to and the Government has pushed its own agenda – even to the point that (I have been told) they have drawn up their own list of possible names for us! Once again we see what could be called “good old fashioned Government dictatorship”.Mind you if we have to name our bridge here are a few of options:• The New Historic Barwon Heads Bridge – because the Minister for Transport thinks the new bridge “maintains the character of the timber bridge”.• The Bridge of Broken Promises – I think this is self evident• Buckley's Bridge – because we always had “buckley's chance” of getting the Government to keep their promises.

• Mary McKillop Bridge – because it would have taken a miracle for the Government to listen to the people.• The Spin Bridge – because when questioned about promising the bridge was here to stay I was told what they really meant “was a bridge would stay in that location, not that the old bridge would stay”.This Government has treated the people of Barwon Heads with total contempt and if they think their appearance here a week before the Election will win you them votes, we say think again.

mark an important historical milestone for the Barwon Heads and Ocean Grove communities,” Mr Pallas said. “We were delighted by the huge number of suggestions submitted for the recent Geelong Ring Road bridge naming competition and hope to be able to celebrate the naming of the Barwon

Heads bridges with the same enthusiasm.“Submissions are now open and we will announce the winners on Saturday, 20 November, at a bridge open day celebration.”Reporter Mark Heenan ventured out onto the streets to gauge some local reaction.

Fete shines through

WITH just over three weeks to go until Ocean Grove’s inaugural Picnic in the Park, the organisers are encouraging all small groups in the town to use a golden opportunity to market what they do.

Already sports, hobby and service clubs have take up the offer but there are many more out there that have yet to register an interest.

Among those that have already signed up are Ocean Grove’s

newly formed Coastcare Group. Only formed back in August

and already boasting 47 members, the group has hit the ground running and has big vision for helping generate awareness about the Ocean Grove foreshore and coastal environment.

Jackie Scully, president of the group which meets at the Surf Lifesaving Club every month, said of the Picnic in the Park: “It should be a great way to engage with the local community,

hopefully sign up new members and get some feedback from the public.”

There will also be a wide range of entertainment, including Dan the Magic Man, a wood chopping demo, the Serenity Animal Farm and historic Vehicles. The organisers are also encouraging buskers to get in touch so that they can be slotted into the schedule. They would also like to hear from other local interest groups, craft and art groups.

There will be hay bales to sit on so bring your chairs, picnic baskets and lunch and have a good old fashioned picnic.

The picnic on Saturday November 27 is being organised through the combined efforts of Ocean Grove Community Enterprise, Ocean Grove Community Association, Ocean Grove Business Association and the Rotary Club of Ocean Grove. Contact Richard on [email protected] or 0439 484437.

A STEADY stream of visitors took the chance to enjoy the Uniting Church Fete on Saturday, with the timing of the event just about perfectly arranged before the downpour arrived. Smiling faces, tea and cakes and plenty of bargains to be had ensured the fete lived up to its great reputation as a good old fashioned church fete.

Crowd defies weather

Captain Gibbs to lead Grove into new eraOCEAN Grove has elected its new fire brigade captain.

Third Lieutenant Steve Gibbs was unanimously elected the new station chief at the election on Monday last week.

After the sudden and very sad passing of the much loved and respected Captain Bob Smith, the Brigade found itself in a situation it had not expected to arise for a long time to come, the election of a new Captain.

Since Captain Bob's passing, the brigade has been led admirably by 1st Lieutenant John Wynn and the Brigade

management team.This situation could not

last and a new Captain had to be elected. The process was not rushed and was conducted in a friendly and harmonious atmosphere.

To conduct the election in accordance with CFA regulations, Operations Officer Ian Beswick was at hand to chair the meeting and make sure protocol was adhered to.

In a great show of solidarity there was only one nomination, 3rd Lieutenant Steve Gibbs.

Steve was elected with a show of hands with all members present

enthusiastically endorsing the candidate.

Steve accepted with a short speech telling the members of the honour it is to lead such a great team and to serve the community. Steve has a great history of volunteerism spending seven years in the Army Reserve where he learnt one of his most important skills, team work.

Within that team work he also learnt valuable leadership skills that he has carried with him through life.

He has been a member of the CFA family for 17 years with about 15

of those years at Ocean Grove. Steve rose through the ranks from 4th then 3rd Lieutenant and now Captain.

Because Steve vacated a spot, there were other elections conducted on the night with the successful members being: 1st Lt John Wynn, 2nd Lt Matt Geerings, 3rd Lt Matt Fisher, 4th Lt Jason Barry and the Communications Officer Adam Wakeling.

Steve said it was a “privilege and an honour” to take the position.

“We are very fortunate to be surrounded by great people, including

career firefighters such as Craig McGarry and Matt Geerings,” he said.

“I am very fortunate that Bob has left the brigade in such good shape as it will make it a lot easier for me.”

Steve, who began his CFA service in July 1994 with the Plenty Fire Brigade, said he would bring a consultative style of leadership to the brigade.

“You do not become an expert overnight, it’s important that you get everyone’s input, it’s important that you listen to everyone.”

Away from the brigade,

Steve is married to Tracey and they have a son Matt and daughter Amy.

Steve works as the National Health and Safety Manager for Target. That expertise

has been well appreciated locally where he took on the voluntary position of safety officer at a number of large local events, such as the Tranquillity Fair and Celebrate ’58.

A GOOD crowd defied the weather to help make Surfside Primary School’s Fresh Food Fair another success. As usual there was plenty to do - some things were moved inside - but that failed to dampen the spirits of those manning the stalls or enjoying them. A major feature of this year’s fair was the newly opened school kitchen and with recent rains their adjoining garden has been supplying plenty of fresh and tasty ingredients to cook with. Of course the rides were as popular as ever, with queues forming even when it was raining. And there were smiling faces to be seen in spite of this year’s wet weather.

A local Toast to the CoastLOCAL vineyards and cellar doors still pulled in good crowds for the weekend Toast to the Coast event despite the miserable weather. The event was held right across the region and locally McGlashan’s Wallington Estate, Oakdene, Banks Road Vineyard, Mermerus Vineyard and Bellarine Estate all opened their doors for the two days, showing off local food and wine. The event was run by Geelong Wine and sponsored by the City of Greater Geelong.

Ocean Grove musician Steve McEwan performed at the Mermerus Vineyard during the Toast to the Coast event at the weekend. The vineyard also helped show off other local guest wineries Grassy Point, Marcus Hill Vineyard and Wyuna Park Vineyard and Garden.

From the Co-Ordinators DeskSomeone just popped into the centre to inform me we only have 9 weeks to go until Xmas. This got me thinking just how quickly this year has passed and what we at OGNC have achieved over the past 12 months.

I am excited to report that we have achieved almost everything we set out to do, - these include our strategic planning day, extension to our scope of registration, building plans developed, increases in membership and courses, the start of a men’s shed and community garden, 4 community development projects, the implementation and re vamp of a business directory and our friends program, over 130 courses programmed each quarter and the licensing of our vacation care program – Whew that’s just some of it!!

Our Annual General meeting was held on the 25th October and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the previous committee of management for their commitment and hard work over the past 12 months and welcome the new committee – hope you are ready for a busy 2011.

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce Stacy to our team at OGNC. Stacy’s main role within the centre is as a community development project worker. If you have an idea for a project or feel that there is something lacking in the community contact us to discuss.

GUITAR and blues legend Geoff Achison is returning to Ocean Grove to perform this month. Geoff who last performed at the Ocean Grove Summer Festival last year is a musician of remarkable ability who has forged his own career path and won fans all around the world.He is returning to the town to play at the Ocean Grove Hotel on Friday November 12. Having taught himself to play in the isolation of rural Australia, he has developed a blues/funk style all his own that can be delicate one moment and explosive the next. Unaware of how the sounds he was hearing on his limited record collection were produced, he invented some of his own techniques - without the aid of pedals or gadgets. At times, just watching him wrench sounds from his simple set-up can be a show in itself.He is a capable vocalist too with a gritty, soulful quality to his voice. Inspired by the great Blues and R&B music of yesteryear, Geoff's live set features an infectious mix of gutsy original tunes, improvised jams and dynamic new arrangements of blues & soul classics.Geoff developed a passion for music as a youngster and taught himself to play on a beat up instrument he'd discovered 'under the stairs' of the family home.In his early 20's he was hired to play lead guitar with Melbourne's top blues performer 'Dutch' Tilders. After several years of relentless touring around Australia, Geoff departed to pursue his own musical ideas and formed the first incarnation of his own band, 'The Souldiggers'."The idea was to invent a name that described the music and I greatly admired the blues philosophy - tapping into one's soul for honesty and truth. That's what 'Souldiggers' is meant to convey." Geoff started his worldwide explorations back in 1995 with his first trip to the US. He represented Melbourne at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis

and won the coveted Albert King Award for his guitar skills. He went on to accept an endorsement deal with the Gibson guitar company's acoustic division. He formed a US Souldiggers band in '98 and recorded his Gettin' Evil CD. He returns regularly to America playing clubs & music festivals. Jorma Kaukonen (Jefferson Airplane/Hot Tuna) has invited him each year since 1998 as a guest instructor at his Fur Peace Ranch guitar camp in Ohio. "Geoff is one of the best blues guitarists I know with a completely individual style." – Jorma KaukonenHe established a UK following recording a live album with a British version of the band. The UK Souldiggers have become a favourite on the British Blues circuit since Souldiggin' In The UK was recorded before an enthusiastic crowd in 2000. Consistently stunning performances by Geoff and the band have brought some glowing reviews, a BBC Radio special and a Blues In Britain magazine cover story. In early 2007 Geoff accepted an offer to relocate to Atlanta, Georgia, USA.He spent 2 eventful years living and working in the US performing with local musicians and racking up thousands of miles on the road. Highlights included jamming with the iconic Les Paul in New York City and being invited to join R&B vocalist Delbert McClinton on board his cruise ship. In May 2009 Geoff released a selection of self-penned compostitions recorded in Atlanta with US touring band and several featured guests. Its title is 'One Ticket, One Ride', an apt sentiment for a creative musician with an adventurous spirit.Geoff Achison & The Souldiggers, supported by Wag The Dog. AN alternative fundraising event is being held at the Uniting Church this month. Entitled the ‘Heart’n’soul Gathering’, there will be live music, Spiritual readings, Crystal /Angelic healing, Yoga, a devotional dancing workshop, hot rocks massage therapy and guest speakers, and 50 per cent of all proceeds from the door takings will go to Jirrahlinga Sanctuary in Barwon Heads. The local ladies group Love ‘n’ light with Jill Meehan (pictured left) will also be performing throughout the day. Take the Lead........As the weather improves with the summer months approaching, dog owners are keen to get out on the beaches with their dogs.

The beaches in our region are managed by Barwon Coast on behalf of the State and we have a responsibility to try to ensure that every one using the coastal environment has a fair go, respecting other beach users in a harmonious and co-existing manner.

As a responsible dog owner you would understand that you have a responsibility to ensure that your dog is well behaved and under control when on the beaches, as not everyone feels comfortable around dogs.

We therefore have a range of areas declared available for dogs all year around; some areas available for part of the year and in some circumstances areas where dogs are prohibited all year around. These areas are clearly identified on the beach access information signs on the inland side of all formalised beach access tracks. Dogs must be on a leash on all formalised beach access tracks.

Area's where you can take you dog all year around include most of the beach area east of Hodgson St (13W) Ocean Grove and most of the beaches along 13th Beach west of 30W down as far as 40W towards Black Rock. In these areas your dog must be under effective control at all times which means that whilst off a leash, your dog must be in your sight and under voice command. You must be mindful that your dog might rush up to another animal or person and if your dog does not respond to your voice then it is not under effective control.

Areas where dogs are prohibited all year long are notably the Hooded Plover

breeding zone west of 40W along 13th Beach, and around the Barwon Heads Bluff adjacent to the Marine Sanctuary.

Barwon Coast has produced a dog brochure to help you understand the dog control orders and the City of Greater Geelong has produced a map (Walk Time) of its region with dog designated dog off leash, on leash and no go areas.

Scoop the PoopAlong with other rubbish, dog faeces generally end up being washed into the river and the sea. Dog droppings can contain harmful bacteria and nutrients and parasites. Toxocara canis is the roundworm that is found in dog faeces, and can be passed onto humans.

Research has shown that the more people experience inappropriate actions by dog owners in public places, the worse their opinion is of dog owners overall, leading to greater pressure for more legislative controls. Cleaning up after your dog is part of being a responsible dog owner.

Barwon Coast provides free dog poo bags at appropriate access pathways for you to use so that you can pick up after your dog. We ask that as a responsible pet owner you will ensure that the contents of the bag are disposed of in an appropriate manner by either placing in the rubbish bins we provide along our coastline, or by taking the bag home and disposing of it in your own rubbish bin.

Being a responsible dog owner will mean that all beach users including shorebirds, seals and other protected wildlife all get a fair go.

So take the lead; do the right thing and enjoy the beach with your dog in the designated areas.

IN a small pond in the Bonnyvale Wetlands (just off Bonnyvale Road), a pair of Black Swans have been nesting.

A very kind person has placed a sign on the walking track next to the pond to ask dog owners to place their dogs on a lead, so that the dogs don't interfere with the swans and their cygnets.

The first photo shows the female swan nesting.The nest was constructed of reeds woven together to form a platform. The nest was located behind a thick layer of reeds which provided basic protection and camouflage. A close

look at the photo reveals a broken egg from a hatchling. The male swan hovered close to the nest constantly.

A Black Swan nest is basically a large heap or mound of reeds, grasses and weeds between 1 and 1.5 metres (3-4½ feet) in diameter and up to 1 metre high, built in shallow water. The nest is generally reused every year and rebuilt as needed.

The weaving involved in building the nest would make my weaver friend Kerrie Bedson proud!

Both parents share the

care of the nest.Black Swans are

primarily black birds, with white feathers on the underside of the wings. Their bill is bright red, with a pale tip; and their legs and feet are greyish-black. Cobs (males) are slightly larger than pens (females), with a longer and straighter bill. Cygnets (immature birds) have greyish-brown feathers. Cygnets have short necks when they are born, which obviously stretch with time.

A mature Black Swan measures around 142 cms in length and weighs

a maximum of 9 kgs. Its wing span is between 1.6 and 2 metres. The neck is long (relatively the longest neck among the swans) and curved in an "S"-shape.

Generally, Black Swans nest in the wetter winter months. The female lays 4 to 8 greenish-white eggs that are incubated for about 35–40 days

That’s a long time to sit on a nest built in a small pond in a populated area.

It must have been very stressful for the birds to have to sit in that area for so long! Apparently the pair of swans tried unsuccessfully to nest in

the Bonnyvale Wetlands last year, so it's great to see that they have succeeded (so far) this year. It was fantastic to observe the hatching of six cygnets about a week ago.

After hatching, the cygnets are tended by the parents for about 6 months.

So if people are walking their dogs at or near the small pond in the Bonnyvale wetlands, please keep your dogs on the lead, and give the cygnets a chance of growing to maturity.

They really are beautiful, graceful creatures!

THE Friends of Ocean Grove Nature Reserve held an open day last week.

A special part of the day included the launch of the reserve’s new Discovery Trail.

The Trail is a 3km circuit that starts at the Information Centre and follows the Banksia trail where 14 points of interest have

been selected for interpretation.The interpretation addresses

the natural environment, starting with simple concepts (e.g. information on single species) then leading into more complex topics towards the end, such as ecosystem function, land clearing and reserve management.

The hope is that it will build

up the level of understanding with the visitors as they progress around the trail.

A mix of species that are only seen or heard seasonally (e.g. frogs and sundews) is included as well as those that are seen throughout the year. This will ensure visitors will see plenty of species and seasonal surprises.

The Discovery trail was an initiative of the Friends of Ocean Grove Nature Reserve and was put together as a collaboration of the committee with brother and sister team Nicci (interperative writer) and Chris (graphic designer) Tsernjavski who developed the copy and designed the brochure for the trail.

Snake on beachA WARNING has gone out to beachgoers to beware of snakes after a local spotted a Copperhead on 13th Beach (pictured left). Alan Denham spotted the snake while walking their dogs along the far end of 13th Beach (500m west of 36W) on Sunday Morning. “My wife and I were quite surprised to come across a small copperhead close to the water. It was only about 30cms long but very agro. Fortunately the dogs didn’t spot it first!”

New visitor facilities at Taits Point on Lake Connewarre were opened last week as part of a $3 million initiative designed to link parklands along the Barwon River from the Ring Road north of Buckley Falls to where the river meets the sea at Barwon Heads.A standout feature of the new visitor spot are two viewing platform lookouts, affording sweeping views westwards over the Ramsar listed Hospital Swamp complex. Visitors can reach Taits Point from Staceys Road at the intersection with Barwon Heads Road in Connewarre.

WHEN Ocean Grove’s Clayton Derrick went to polish his concrete floor at home, he discovered the health of his family and the environment didn’t have to be compromised in the process.

The family had just bought a new house and the concrete floor was a painted, lumpy disaster so Clayton decided to strip it back.

A little research revealed the desired sleek, minimalist finish could be achieved without the use of potentially harmful chemicals.

This discovery ‘cemented’ an idea and led the father-of-two to set up his own concrete polishing service – Ecoliving Polished Concrete.

For a long time that glossy, polished finish synonymous with interior concrete floors has been achieved by applying a thick coating of polyurethane, a main culprit in emitting dangerous cancer-causing Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) into the air.

“Most of what we have in our homes: the carpets; the wood floors; the paint on our walls, they all contain VOCs. These are potentially harmful and carcinogenic,” Clayton said.

“My main concern when I was polishing my own floor was for my family, because I have two

young girls and I’m concerned about what we are all breathing in.”

As a firefighter, Clayton has seen first-hand what potential harm there can be in the humble home.

“In my work I’m very aware of what dangerous VOCs there are in the average household. We use detectors to read VOC levels and when you see flames in a house, giving off purple and green smoke, you know it’s harmful.”

The Ecoliving service will

create an effect that is long lasting and hard wearing, while still achieving a beautiful finish, at a cost similar to conventional methods.

“The finished product can look truly stunning,” Clayton said.

“It’s a minimalist approach that’s safe for your kids to live on, and it doesn’t need to be toxic.”

Clayton has trained with a Sydney company that currently leads the market in eco-friendly concrete polishing, and his US-made equipment is state-

of-the-art having won the 2010 Customer Satisfaction Award from Concrete Polishing Magazine.

Ecoliving also uses the Starseal system of food stain resistance which Clayton said provides the best possible protection against heavy duty stains, making it ideal for restaurants and commercial kitchens.

Ecoliving Polished Concrete will use this cutting edge equipment to provide a variety of finishes, from Honing which provides a smooth finish; to a Salt and Pepper (slight exposed aggregate); to a fully exposed aggregate finish; as well as non-slip surfaces and floor preparation.

“I’m passionate about what I do. I love the end result, and when I go to sleep at the end of the day I know that it’s safe.”

Clayton has lived in Ocean Grove for 14 years and has a passion for music and surfing.

He surfs regularly around the local breaks, and was a member of "The Sneaker Set" who he played drums for. This has now disbanded, and Clayton and another Sneaker Set member are forming a new originals rock band. This time he will be back “doing what I'm best at, which is playing guitar and lead vocals”.

OCEAN Grove Hotondo’s Nick and Allie Barker have won another industry honour, this time Project Home of the Year in the 2010 HIA Western Victoria Regional Housing Awards.

The HIA Awards recognise the achievements and talents of those who lead the way in innovation, design, technology and construction of housing.

The awards are judged by industry professionals, and are highly regarded and prestigious awards.

LOCAL wineries are celebrating the news that the Geelong region has continued to impress the Australian critics.

Bellarine wineries have contributed to the region receiving exceptional and unprecedented accolades in the recently released Halliday Wine Companion 2011.

More than 82% of Geelong wineries reviewed gained a four plus star rating – an increase of 8% from the 2010 publication. In addition, 35% of wineries achieved the highest

possible 5 star rating for “outstanding winery” – an increase of 11% from 2010.

Commonly referred to as Australia’s wine ‘Bible’, the annual Halliday Wine Companion is recognised as the definitive guide to Australian wine. It is compiled by James Halliday, Australia’s foremost wine judge and industry commentator.

Geelong Winegrowers Association (GWA) executive, Robyn Fitzpatrick said the results confirmed the fact that Geelong had evolved into a dynamic

powerhouse of the Australian wine industry.

“Wine connoisseurs from around the world now seek Geelong’s offerings out - it has become a multi-award winning wine region of particular interest which commands attention on the national and international stage,” Ms Fitzpatrick said.

“The extended representation at the top end of ratings categorically showcases and reinforces the calibre of the grapes, winemakers and wines

of the Geelong region,” she said.Specific highlights in the 2011 Halliday Wine Companion include: • 13 Geelong wines showcased in Halliday’s ‘Best of the Best’ list, featuring the highest rated wines in Australia of each variety. Once again we would like to sincerely thank “Ocean Grove Voice” for donating and publishing our Newsletter for Areas 39/43.WIND-UPUnfortunately, due to the lack of support from and our inability to attract new volunteers, we have to announce that Neighbourhood Watch – Ocean Grove, Areas 39/43 have had to close down. It is with great regret that we have to take this step as we have tried very hard to keep Neighbourhood Watch operating in this area. We will, however, attempt to keep the information ongoing in The Voice every month. It is with heartfelt thanks that we extend our appreciation for the Supper which has been supplied by the Rolling Pin Pie and Cake Shop over the years, and encourage the people of

Ocean Grove to continue to support this very worthwhile business as they do quite a lot behind the scenes for local organisations.Our thanks also go to the many business organisations who have supported us over the many years of our operation. OCEAN Grove Rotary Club presented its annual Pride in Workmanship Awards last week.

There were three awardees for this year’s honours, on this occasion chaired by Trevor McArdle, and presented by Vice-President Geoff Chandler.

They were Gary Davis, paint sales manager at Wallington WRG, John Core, men’s hairdresser in the ‘Trak Arcade’, and Alan Barber, photojournalist of the Ocean Grove Voice.

Gary has been at the hardware supplier since it opened six years ago and brought

with him the expertise of having worked as a professional painter and decorator while John, who has always been a hairdresser, has run the Ocean Grove busines for 17 years.

Alan is usually running around taking the photos before setting them out in the paper.

“Three very worthy recipients of our club’s annual recognition for outstanding service and friendly contribution to our community,” said Rotary.

Rotary launched the awards several years back with the aim of championing local workers or business owners and celebrating the efforts of those that stood out.


OCEAN Grove Neighbourhood Centre can be proud of another rewarding year of achievements and gains, president Tony Haines told the AGM last Wednesday.

Citing achievements that range from their hugely popular part time programs to the youth drop in centre and auspicing the establishment of a Men’s Shed to mental health day celebrations, a youth arts show and achieving Accredited Training status, the centre has set a new benchmark for Neighbourhood Houses in the region.

Complimenting the centre team for its continual source of new ideas Tony said: “I would congratulate all the staff for the dedicated and professional work they perform for the community and our centre. We are most fortunate to have such quality staff members working for us.”

The Ocean Grove Neighbourhood Centre team is led by co-ordinator Nicki Dunn and supported by Julie Long and Josie Wallis, volunteers and the centre tutors. Nicki was awarded the City of Greater Geelong’s Youth Leader of the Year award earlier this year.

On the night the centre also recognised the work of two of its

ten-year plus volunteers. Keith Ricards and his wife

Meryl and Ena Aitken were presented with Life Membership of the centre.

Both Keith and Meryl have been involved in the centre from its beginnings some 30 years ago, sitting on its committee of management, running courses, volunteering their time and fundraising and supporting the centre.

During the past six years Keith has been their volunteer bus driver, driving their water aerobic ladies to class, the youth club on its Friday night excursions and dressing up as Santa for the playgroup.

Ena began volunteering at the centre in 1999 just when it underwent big changes and the management committee saw a large number of retirements. She offered her services and expertise and was quickly snapped up as the new secretary. She only resigned from the committee in 2008 but still keeps reception on Friday mornings.

After presenting the long-serving volunteers with their Life Memberships Councillor Jan Farrell commented on the centre’s fortune in having Nicki

as its coordinator. “We started the Impetus Youth

Awards about three years ago and … the competition was quite fierce this year, we had almost 100 nominations. Nicki took off the Youth Worker of the Year award. As someone who pushes the youth agenda in the area very strongly across the region, I don’t know if you realise what a living treasure you have in Nicki working with young people in Ocean Grove. I just wanted to acknowledge that.”

Those comments were backed up by guest speaker Senior

Constable Judd Joseph who elaborated on the successful partnership local police had developed with the Nicki and the centre.

Nicki hightlighted the centre’s increased delivery of courses, the implementation of a Neighbourhood House Hub and the expansion of its youth and school holiday program and she thanked the team for going ‘beyond the call of duty’.

During the evening a new committee was elected and then those attending were treated to cheese, wine and nibbles.

THE Rotary Club of Ocean Grove recently welcomed a visit from District Governor Jessie Harman.

Jessie (pictured left) is in charge of District 9780 which stretches North to Swan Hill and West to the South Australian border. She has more than 60 clubs to visit in her year as Governor. Jessie met with board members before speaking to the club

and thanking members for the significant contribution to the local community and also to the work of Rotary International through some $50,000 contributed annually by the club. Money is raised through the local community market, an annual car raffle and an Art Show.

Rotary’s plan to eradicate Polio is predicted to be achieved in just 5 years, with only four countries

remaining affected. Locally 50 members work to develop youth and literacy, to support local people in need, to allow groups to fundraise at the market gate, to improve the town in areas like the Lookout Reserve, to provide a seniors Christmas Dinner and the ANZAC Day breakfast, to support the Surf Club, The Neighbourhood Centre and community events such as the

Community Showcase Picnic.Jessie thanked the members on

behalf of the community and for those we have helped in ways we may never know.

NEW Ocean Grove recruit Luke Sinnott is a self-confessed hard-nut and is keen to enhance the Grubbers’ midfield engine room in 2011, writes Mark Heenan.

The 28-year-old joins the Ocean Grove Football Club after spending three years with the Spotswood Football Club in the Western Region Football League (WRFL) in Melbourne’s western suburbs.

Sinnott, who played 20 matches with Spotswood and kicked 19 goals in 2010 including a six-goal haul against West Footscray in Round 12, was a member of the club’s 2008 and 2009 premierships.

He played in this year’s WRFL Grand Final though the Woods failed in their attempt to win a hat-trick of premierships falling short by 17 points against Albion.

“I see myself as a hard running midfielder type as opposed to a resting forward line player who just kicks goals,” said Sinnott who signed with the Grubbers last week.

“My strengths are on the ball with endurance running.”

Ocean Grove senior coach Cameron McGregor said Sinnott’s arrival will compliment the Grubbers’ exp-erienced midfield group of James Dalton, Ben Ricardo and playing assistant coaches Rowan

O’Callaghan and Shane Jack.

“We’ve identified (Luke) as an inside midfielder – we have been looking for players between 25-30 years of age that have had experience and he has come to us,” McGregor said. “Our midfield has gone to being one of the weakest to one of the strongest with additions of Ben Ricardo, Shane Jack and Luke Sinnott.”

Raised in Camperdown in Victoria’s Western District, Sinnott along with partner Tahlia moved to Ocean Grove last month. She will play netball with the Grubbers in 2011.

Sinnott said he and Tahlia, an accountant with WHK, had been on the lookout for a coastal change for some time.

“90% per cent of the reason we came to the club was for business and work opportunities, we live 300 meters from the club,” he said.

Last year the midfielder spent part of Spotswood’s 2010 pre-season campaign in the Ocean Grove region.

“We did (part) of our pre-season (with Spotswood) down here last year and ran into a few of the Ocean Grove players at the pub on a Saturday night,” he said.

“Actually Theo Theodore (Spotswood reserves coach) is friends with Ocean Grove’s Matt Tyrrell.

“He put me on to Matt and Theo advised him I was going to move down…and it rolled on from there.”

Sinnott, who was the Spotswood Football Club senior vice-captain in 2010, is keen to play a leadership role with the Grubbers next season and nurture the club’s talented up and coming juniors who will make the transition into senior football.

“Just talking to Cameron McGregor (senior coach) and the boys, they have got a lot young kids to come through,” he said.

“Something I would like to do is get the juniors up and running and show the experience I have got.”

The former Cam-perdown Magpie player

is also keen to develop his business in the local area after living in the inner suburbs of Melbourne.

He said Ocean Grove’s proximity to the coast and the town’s growing industrial estate were factors behind the move.

“That is probably why we chose to live in Ocean Grove (because of its permanent population),” Sinnott said.

“We did look at Portarlington and around the coast and a little bit further down. “But more so (Ocean Grove) has an industrial state with Reece Plumbing and has a business side to it.” Oustside of football, Sinnott runs his own plumbing business called Sinnott Plumbing and Gas-fitting.

Senior netballers and under 19’s start pre-seasonOCEAN GROVE senior and Under 19 netballers commence their pre-season tomorrow night. The first of six sessions begins at 6:30pm at the Ocean Grove netball courts.All interested players are expected to meet at the netball club for a light run before making their way to the Ocean Grove main beach. Sessions will run every Thursday for one hour up until December 9. Ocean Grove Under 18 coach Rory Nicol confirmed the Grubbers are likely to field two sides in 2011.“I counted the number of players who are eligible to play Under 18’s and there is about 46 in total,” Nicol said. “We want two sides and we don’t want players leaving our club to miss out on a game.”The Under 18’s group will hold a team BBQ three days prior to the first training session on November 12. THE Ocean Grove Harriers commenced the Spring/Summer series with the ever popular “Cobber’s Classic” This is a traditional run where two cobbers set off in two directions, meet and return to meet again and return to meet again and return and finally, run over the finish line.

The course was altered this year due to the bridgeworks and such was the popularity of the new course it has been

decided at the highest possible level, to maintain the new course.

Inaugural winners were cobbers Craig McGarry and Phil Emery.

The next scheduled event is on December 5 when the new clubrooms will be available.

Ocean Grove Harriers meet every Saturday at the toilet block above the boat ramp in Ocean Grove starting at 7am. Cobbers Classic winners Craig McGarry and Phil Emery.

Club Persons of the YearDot Sutcliffe

Dot took up bowls seriously in 1992 after retiring from a teaching career which included 27 years at Barwon Heads Primary School. Having played the odd social game with her Mum and Dad, Dot was ready to take on the challenge of a being a serious bowler. During her youth, Dot played hockey, tennis and netball for Barwon Heads and badminton at Ocean Grove.

Her husband Max was also a great sportsman having excelled at cricket and played a couple of seasons of footy with Geelong. Dot and Max have two children, Stephen and Rhonda and 5 grandchildren. I’m guessing sport was a popular discussion topic in the Sutcliffe household.

When I rang Dot this morning, she had just arrived home from the Geelong show, having been there since 6.30am cooking breakfast to raise money with the Red Cross. I thought that all the work that Dot does around the Bowling Club was enough to keep her busy, how wrong could I have been. Apparently Dot has been involved in numerous activities over the years and the Barwon Heads PS presents an annual award named “The Dot Sutcliffe Community Award” It appears there’s a lot more to Dot

than the lady that monitors the biscuit cupboard at the Club.

Dot has been on the committee at Ocean Grove Bowling Club for 13 of the last 14 years, including two terms as President and terms in most other positions. Dot has proven to be smarter than most by never nominating for the dreaded selection committee. We’re not sure how she finds the time to fit everything but Dotty has done wonders for this Club and we’re all grateful for her contribution. Well earned Dot.

Alex CookAlex and Joy Cook raised their 4 sons and a daughter in St Albans where Cookie worked at the Austin hospital as an orthotist(working with artificial limbs and other medical devices, not as a neuro surgeon as he would have you believe).After he retired Cookie had big plans of retiring up on the Murray river, so together with Joy, they headed up to Corowa for a look around. Joy then decided that it was too far away

from the grandkids who all live around the metro area. It was then that they decided to retire in the place where they had been enjoying their holidays for the past 40 years - Ocean Grove.

Cookie has had a very active sporting life playing footy, cricket and golf before taking up bowls at Keilor in 1990. When they moved to Ocean Grove in 1994 it didn’t take long before both Joy and Alex became actively involved in the Ocean Grove Bowling Club.

At almost 80 years young, Cookie is still an extremely competitive bowler and is a current member of the much loved selection committee. (At your age Alex, you could do without that stress!). Cookie has been on the selection committee for the past 5 years and was on the Men’s committee for many years.

He has dedicated numerous hours to running social bowls, raffles, club events etc. You name it, Cookie will have a hand in it somewhere along the line. An avid Collingwood supporter, you can always spot Cookie with his black and white beanie on the green throughout the winter. This year Cookie has finally got some revenge on all those Geelong supporters in the club. Good on ya Cookie and go Pies!

OCEAN Grove Golf Club Ladies took part in the 10th Annual L’Oréal Paris Ladies Cup on Thursday 14th October, an event that sees L’Oréal Paris celebrate ten successful years of supporting women’s golf in Australia.

The Ocean Grove Tennis Club Wednesday night girls had a girls night in last Friday night to raise funds for the research into women's cancers. The night exceeded the girls expectations and raised just over $5000.A great night was had by all starting with a free bubbly and lots of raffles and a silent auction which kept them busy. Sportsfanatics and Kairos in The Grove helped the night along with a great fashion parade and it all ended with an auction. THE revised BPCA A-Grade Round three one-day fixture between Collendina and Portarlington will take on greater importance for the Cobras this Saturday, writes Mark Heenan.

All two-day fixtures in the BPCA A, B and C grades were cancelled due to the wet weather last Saturday.

Matches in the D-Grade one-day competition were also abandoned because of rain.

Collendina, last year’s A-Grade premiers, sit on the bottom of the A-Grade ladder on percentage after losing their first two games to neighbouring rivals Barwon Heads and

Ocean Grove. The Collendina versus

Portarlington match starts at 1:15pm on Saturday at Collendina Recreation Reserve.

It won't get any easier for the Cobras, who meet the unbeaten second-placed Drysdale at Drysdale in Round four.

“Our match this Saturday definitely does take (on greater importance),” Cobras co-coach Eddie Ellwood said. “We understand it is an important match, we‘ve spoken about that as a club.

“We want to stay in touch with the top six teams. It is a must win game.”

The Cobras are still without their main strike bowler Luke Veitenheimer, who has an injured foot, and will be unavailable for the next two matches.

Veitenheimer, last year's leading wicket taker with 46 wickets in the BPCA A-Grade competition, will return in Round five against Newcomb.

"There are no stress fractures - just arthritis, had it for years," Veitenheimer said.

In other Round three A-Grade one-day fixtures Ocean Grove travels to Jan Juc, Wallington plays at home to Drysdale and Anglesea meets Barwon Heads.

Collendina A Grade ahead of the match against Ocean Grove.

New confidence at GroveOCEAN Grove claimed bragging rights over local crosstown rival Collendina in Round two A-grade matches in the BPCA.

The Grubbers, who batted first, made a competitive total of 8 for 189 from their 40 overs in a revised one-day fixture, defeated Collendina who fell nine runs short, andbowled out for 180.

Ocean Grove senior coach Lucas Cameron was pleased with his side's start to the 2010/11 season.

"Good to have beaten two

sides that finished above us last season," said Cameron.

"We are playing patchy cricket at the minute, and hopefully we can put in a strong performance against Jan Juc."

Grubbers No.3 batsman David Bate was in spectacular form and smashed an unbeaten 90, while all-rounder Michael Kenneady

chimed in with 22.Kenneady backed up with

the ball after taking 2/18 from his six overs, while Stuart Anderson finished with 3/32 from his eight overs. Cameron said Bate's innings helped set the platform as Ocean Grove recovered from a slow start. At one stage Collendina had the home side struggling at 4/55, but the Grubbers quickly turned the tables and compiled more than 100 runs from their last 15 overs.

"As for Batey, he is our

barometer and when he batted the way he did, we will be very hard to beat," Cameron said.

Jamie Brennan was the pick of the bowlers for the Cobras finishing with 1/8 from his eight overs.

In reply, Collendina trio Corey Walter (29), Ben Ricardo (42) and Simon Ryan (46) helped the visitors make a late charge with the bat, but it was not enough in the end to stop the Grubbers from winning.

OCEAN Grove’s Jacob Grills is now Victoria’s top seeded Under 16 tennis player.The rise to the top has not been a sole journey for the 15-year-old Bellarine Secondary College student. Along with the support of his mother Jacinta and healthy competition from older brother Matt, Jacob is sponsored by Club Grove – Ocean Grove Bowling Club.“Matt has been great – He has played a lot with me,” Jacob said. “So that has really helped me out heaps and made me a lot better tennis player.” Jacob said it was a pleasant surprise to be informed of his number one ranking last month. “I found out around October 10,” Jacob said.“I was actually away playing a

tournament, when I found out so that may have helped me play a bit better.“I have been hovering around number two or three for a while.”More recently Jacob received an invitation to take part in the National Tennis Academy at Melbourne Park.The talented teenager has played in men’s and junior competitions and tournaments in Geelong, Bendigo, Traralgon, Warrnambool, Melbourne, Brisbane and Tasmania.He even travelled to New Zealand for two weeks in December last year for a tournament. Jacob, who is ranked No.7 in Australia for the Under 16 age group, plays pennant at Geelong Lawn Tennis Club and is coached by fully qualified Tennis Australia Club professional coach Simon Keeble.
