In February, we conducted a partial survey on synergy. Over 200 employees were asked about the organization of work, relationships, vision and objectives, which are the foundation of synergy within our company.

The results clearly demonstrate that the challenges we face daily are stimulating. However, they also show that the communication and processes must be improved and the roles and responsibilities should be clarified.

Here are some of the initiatives that will be implemented shortly:

Strengthen internal communication

We want everyone to be informed on what is happening within the entire organization. To this end, in addition to the internal newsletter, we will sen you more often a list of projects (obtained, completed and ongoing) and upcoming events. Future newsletters will complement the information by continuing to inform you about the characteristics of our achievements and activities.

Share our vision for the future

This year, we will share with you the planning of several future projects that will allow us to continue our growth and expand our expertise.

Develop an efficient organization

We believe that common roles and responsibilities clearly defined help to create a harmonious working environment. Over the coming months, several of our processes will be reviewed in order to be updated and adapted to our reality.

Other initiatives will follow. We believe that stimulating synergy within the group will help us to achieve much more and allow us to grow successfully.

Thank you all for your important contribution to our collective success!2

TUG FOR MANITOBA HYDRO

ACCESS BARGE FOR HEBRON

The modification of the barge in an access structure and offices is proceeding well and delivery is scheduled for June. So far, 82 containers are installed on the barge and used primarily for office on the site of GBS. A total of 127 tons of steel were transformed to achieve all mountings for containers, stairs and walkways. In addition, 400 gallons of yellow paint were used to paint them. More than five (5) km of cable of different sizes were also installed on the barge, in addition to over 36 units of heating and cooling.

Despite very difficult winter and spring conditions, the team stayed focused on the work. The customer is also very satisfied and added numerous extras that extend the contract until June 5, 2014.

CSL SHIPS

Last March, Fabrication Navale Ocean (FNO) obtained its first external contract for the construction of a 45-foot tug for Manitoba Hydro. The project represents some 20,000 working hours for the team. Engineering work on the concept of nozzle tug done by Capilano Maritime is underway. Ship construction will begin in June in FNO’s workshop in Québec.

The four (4) blocks that constitute the vessel will be delivered by truck to the site of Manitoba Hydro on Rat Lake. Six (6) weeks will be needed to complete the final assembly of the tug on site in April 2015. Hydro Manitoba currently operates two (2) tugs at the Rat Lake reservoir and one (1) of them will be decommissioned following the delivery of the new tug.

OCEAN INDUSTRIESFABRICATION NAVALE OCEANAND OCEAN NAVAL AND INDUSTRIAL REPAIRS

Last winter, the team at Ocean Naval and Industrial Repairs (ONI) performed a maintenance contract on two (2) CSL ships. These were at ONI’s facilities for over a month. Work has been done on propellers in engine rooms as well as several pipes. Several thousand pounds of steel were also changed in ballast tanks.

The conditions were difficult because of the cold and access to tanks was restricted. Due to the scope of work, our teams have worked on several shifts, evenings and weekends. Employees from the shipyard and FNO lent a hand for the project, allowing delivery within the required time. The CSL Contract is another fine example of synergy between Ocean’s operating units.

OCEAN REMORQUAGEAND OCEAN NAVIGATION

This year, Eastern Canada experienced the biggest concentration of ice over the past decade. For this reason, the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation requested the services of Océan Remorquage Montréal for the icebreaking of the locks in the metropolitan region.

The tug OCEAN ROSS GAUDREAULT began breaking the ice on March 31, 2014. The tug OCEAN TUNDRA took over the next day. Assisted by the tug OCEAN LA PRAIRIE, it took four (4) days to de-ice the locks of St-Lambert, Ste-Catherine and Beauharnois. It was the first operation of its kind for the OCEAN TUNDRA and its crew who met the challenge successfully.

TRANSPORTATION FOR ARBEC

On April 22th, the tugs OCEAN HERCULES and OCEAN BRAVO assisted the bulker Halit Bey which ran aground near Grondines. The ship had arrived from Germany and transported urea, a chemical, to Trois-Rivières.

The two (2) tugs arrived on site in the morning and proceeded to transfer two (2) pilots and four (4) inspectors. After having found no spill, Océan Remorquage Trois-Rivières’ team was able to proceed with the salvage operation. The operation was to take place at 2 pm precisely, when the tide was at its highest level. The tugs’ crews completed the operation successfully and the Halit Bey was able to reach its destination at 7 pm.

ICE BREAKING CONTRACT FOR THE SEAWAY

The MEGA MOTTI will take over the ECHO/BETSIAMITES tandem for another contract of wood chips and sawdust transportation for Arbec. Operations will take place between the latter’s sawmill in Port-Cartier, the Port of Trois-Rivières and Port Hawkesbury in Nova Scotia. A total of 15 trips are planned in the contract which is equivalent to more than 125,000 tonnes of wood chips and sawdust, representing approximately 3,500 trips by truck.

The choice of shipping therefore significantly reduces the traffic on Highways 138 and 20. Services offered by Ocean Navigation allow Arbec to reduce by four (4) times the mileage, to use four (4) times less fuel and produce four (4) times less GHG emissions than if they had chosen road transport.

We recently completed a second contract in Mexico for the dredging of the Port of Veracruz. Some 20,000 m3 of sediment were extracted. Materials drawn by OCEAN TRAVERSE NORD were deposited in an enclosure of 1,000 m3. Once completed, it was emptied by excavators. The sand was then redirected to different disposal sites. The contract required a fortnight from Ocean Dredging DSM’s team.

We also got a first contract in the Dominican Republic for the dredging of the Port of San Pedro de Macoris. Dredging of 35,000 m3 represents approximately 11 days’ work. They will be followed by testing for a potential contract to the Port of Haina during the winter of 2015. Opportunities for dredging the Port of La Romana are also considered.

This spring, several barges left on route to Newfoundland and Labrador for the Hebron project. Several equipments are rented for two (2) years, which represents the entire duration of the construction of the gravity-based structure. In April, Ocean Marine Works (OMW) delivered the barge JMC 185. The latter will be used to transport steel reinforcements for the installation of the offshore oil rig. In addition, 17 sectional OC-42 barges left l’Ange-Gardien on May 1st; the latter will serve as spacer barges and ferry docks. Fourteen sectional OC-45 barges and three (3) hopper barges will be sent shortly. Eight (8) of these barges will be used to transport silica while six (6) others will be used for waste disposal. The hopper barges will be used for the transportation of aggregates required for the construction of the structure’s host site.

Construction DJL requested OMW’s services for the rehabilitation project of the Champlain Bridge. In total, some thirty sectional barges and a work boat are on site to assist the company in the repair and strengthening of pillars, beams, slabs and apron on part of the bridge’s section 5.

Other barges are also used by Pomerleau on the same site. Among other things, the company must replace the super beam on the structure of Champlain Bridge, installed urgently to counter a large crack last November. The 50-ton modular steel truss that will replace the beam will remain in place until the decommissioning of the bridge in 2018. At certain periods, some fifty people worked 24/24 for several days on the project so to do not disrupt traffic.

OUR WORLDNEWS

On February 25th, host and comedian Mario Jean came to shoot an episode of «On va s’coucher moins niaiseux» at Océan Remorquage Québec. After visiting the dispatch centre with Dave Gauthier, he boarded the OCEAN TUNDRA where he visited the engine room with Dan Blouin; he then took part in various maneuvers. Under the command of Captain Angelo Lavoie, Mario transhipped a pilot, escorted the vessel Seavenus and broke a layer of ice 1 m thick. Aired on Ztélé, the episode on the Seaway, shot at Ocean’s facilities, was presented during the week of April 8.

We wish to thank all the crew of the OCEAN TUNDRA who participated in the making. Visit http://goo.gl/JRmBpy to access the video. For legal reasons, please note that this can only be viewed internally.

Last winter, the Institut maritime du Québec and Vrak.tv, have created a contest to test the knowledge of users of the maritime sector. The purpose of the contest was to introduce them to different careers within the industry such as marine engineering, naval architecture, navigation trades, transport logistics and professional diving.

The competition took place exclusively on the website Vrak.tv from January 27 to February 16, 2014. Over 2,000 participants took part in the contest in which the winner is awarded a visit on an Ocean harbor tug and the opportunity of trying a navigation simulator. Thus, the winner Julie Yergeau had the chance to visit the OCEAN TUNDRA on March 7 along with her spouse and Maryse Paré.

On June 1st, the 3rd edition of Défi-Entreprises will be held in Sainte-Catherine-de-la Jacques-Cartier. The challenge consists of a choice of three (3) events including the 5 km, 10 km run or walk, and new this year, the work-out session. The first departure is scheduled for 9:25 am; participants are expected at 8 am. A photograph of the Ocean team will be taken around 8:30 am. In total, thirty Ocean employees are registered and have been training since March for the challenge. Over 765 km have been accumulated while training. Hugo Duchesne, Dave Gauthier, François Marchand, Mireille Bérubé, Catherine Lemieux and Marie-Neige Saucier stand out as having accumulated the greatest number of kilometers.

We wish good luck to all our participants!

In October 2012, I challenged my long-time friend to participate in the Trophée Roses des sables with me. Instinctive, persevering, competitive and resourceful, we immediately embarked on the adventure that was a tailor made challenge!

Stemming from the tradition of African rally raids, the Trophée Roses des Sables is an orienteering where the objective is to rally the day’s stage only with a road-book and a compass. In addition to the tests of orientation and crossing dunes in the heart of the desert, the challenge is a humanitarian action as each team must provide 50 kg of school, educational or hygienic supplies to the association «Children of the desert.» In addition, the sum of one (1) euro for each kilometer completed during the race will be donated to the association «Le cancer du sein, parlons-en!”

For this project, we had to raise $ 25,000. We had to work hard for over a year and a half. We cannot count the hours put in organizing fundraising activities and soliciting potential partners. We organized bowling nights, a spaghetti dinner, a flea market and a draw. We also sold hot dogs and flowers and we continue to sell chocolate and candied onions since the beginning of the campaign. There are still many activities scheduled until the end of June. Once the goal achieved, we will continue to raise funds to give to the Patro Laval, a recreation center for the youth of Saint-Sauveur which was very helpful in our efforts.

We can then focus on our physical training during the three (3) remaining months before our departure, and especially on planning our three-week trip which includes the crossing of France, Spain and part of Morocco before starting the rally in the desert. We will also take the opportunity to acquire basic mechanic skills and seek advice from an old «Rose» who is our godmother for this event in order to be ready for any eventuality.

We invite you to visit our Facebook page (Belles and Rebelles) to participate in our upcoming events or simply encourage us with a donation to: http://bellesetrebelles.tropheeroses-des-sables.org. You can also follow the competition on these pages.
