STORM WATCHING:Winter storms provide the most spectacular storm watching as 25-ft seas and high winds bat-ter the coast. The North Jetty provides an excel-lent vantage point but is extremely dangerous. Do NOT go near the rocks. Check with the Ocean Shores Police Department for safety issues.

SWIMMING:As inviting as the ocean may be, we don’t recom-mend swimming in it. Rip currents can be hazard-ous. However, Duck Lake offers freshwater swim-ming. And many hotels & motels in Ocean Shores feature swimming pools. • Ramada, 360.289.7700,

• Secluded North Beach:The North Beach, is one of the most scenic areas in the Pacific Northwest. Enjoy surf fish-ing, swimming, kayaking, clam digging, kite flying and sand
sculpture festivals. NOTE: Pacific Beach State Park is the only beach camping in the area.
• North Grays Harbor County/Rain Forest:
The Quinault Rain Forest, a glacier carved lake, and abundant wildlife are all part of this area’s ap-peal. Enjoy camping, hiking, Forest Service guided nature walks, boating, swimming, world renowned steelhead fishing and horseback riding.
The 25-mile loop drive around Lake Quinault showcases the mossy old growth forest that sur-rounds the lake—its towering trees and lush jade forests home to a
variety of birds and animals, including spotted owls and Roosevelt elk.
• Westport & Grayland/ The Cranberry Coast:
Experience the spirit of a timeless fishing village, color-ful Cranberry bogs, beach-combing, charter fishing and whale watching on the south side of Grays Harbor—18 miles of pristine beach from Westport through Grayland to North cove and Tokeland.
Additional Things You Can See and Do in Grays Harbor County:
• In Cosmopolis, be sure to take a look at the “Treaty Mural” commemorating the signing of the 1855 treaty between the U.S. government and Indian nations.
• Lady Washington is berthed at Grays Harbor Histori-cal Seaport. The Seaport is a living museum of sailing ships from a bygone era including an 18th century replica tall ship that ventures up the Chehalis river estuary seasonally.
• Elma has many historic mu-rals and unassuming yet booty-rich antique shops.
• McCleary’s International Bear Festival—usually the 2nd week of July. It’s a great time to visit this slumbering little lumber town and your opportunity to taste real bear stew—one of the Festival’s main attrac-tions.
• Over 20,000 gray whales journey past the Washington coast from March to late May to their breeding grounds in the Bering Sea. Bring your binoculars—or charter a boat out of Westport.
There are numerous sights and activities near Ocean Shores as well, including walks in Olympic National Park, a visit to a tall ship, antiquing—even a visit to a working cranberry bog!
