NURSES’ CORNER Exercise Tips by Michelle and Judy Everyone can benefit from regular exercise. Your child will have stronger muscles and bones and will be less likely to be overweight because exer- cise helps to control body fat. Children who are physically fit sleep better and are better able to handle physical, as well as emotional, challeng- es. Children who are active develop the three elements of fitness: endurance (running), strength (climbing) and flexibility (bending and stretching). Endurance is aerobic exercise, when the heart beat faster and a person breathes harder. It strengthens the heart and improves the body’s oxygen level. Some aerobic activities are: bas- ketball, biking, soccer, swimming, jumping and running. Strength activities can be included in normal play and help to tone and strengthen muscles: climbing, doing cartwheels, dance or doing pull ups on the playground bars. Flexibility is improved by exercising which allows the mus- cles and joints to bend and move easily. Children do this when they stretch to reach for an object, do jumping jacks, bending or sitting to reach their toes. The number of overweight children has doubled in the past 30 years due to many factors. One major factor is that children are becoming less active due to TV, video games and other electronic activities. Young children should not be inactive for more than 1 hour unless they are sleeping. Children older than 2 years should be restricted to only 1-2 hours of TV or Video screen time, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. To help your child to be fit and healthy: have them participate in a variety of activities that are age appropriate; have a regular routine for physical activity (planned and free play); include activity in daily routines (stairs in- stead of elevators); keep it FUN, so they will want to come back for more. Combining a regular physical routine and a healthy diet is the key to a healthy lifestyle. Ejercicio Regular

Resistencia (funcionamiento), resistencia

(escalada) y flexibilidad (flexión y estiramien-

to).
