our travel philosophy

Oceanic Society’s mission is to conserve marine wildlife and habitats by deepening the connections between people and nature. We strive to facilitate meaningful, life-changing experiences for our travelers—ones that will inspire them to become more intimately involved in conservation long after the expedition is over.

On the ground in the places we visit, our expeditions support conservation, research, and community development efforts that serve to underpin long-term sustainable relationships between people and the oceans (see pages 8–9).

By participating in an Oceanic Society expedition, you are more than just another traveler. You are an active participant in our global effort to build a healthy future for the oceans.

Authentic

Educational

As a non-profit conservation organization with decades of global experience, our extensive network of staff and conservation partners gives us access to special insights and opportunities that are not available through other travel operators. Our trips are guided by working field biologists, naturalists, and conservationists who are knowledgeable and passionate, and we partner with local residents to enrich their lives as well as yours.

As lifelong students of nature, we believe that appreciation of the natural world is enhanced through knowledge. Our trip leaders are trained to interpret nature in engaging ways and to provide information that enhances your experience by explaining the science behind the species and habitats you will observe. We also team up with local experts whenever possible to give you opportunities to learn from the latest field research.

Life-changing

Impactful

We aim to do more than take you on an amazing trip. We want your travel experience to positively impact your life and inspire you to become an active participant in building a healthy future for the oceans by adopting pro-ocean behaviors, or “Blue Habits.” We select, design, and lead our expeditions around this bold idea, and empower our travelers with the tools and knowledge they need to become part of the growing “oceanic society.”

Travelers with Oceanic Society can rest assured that their travel dollars are well spent. We take great care to partner with travel operators, non-profit organizations, and individuals who share our commitment to preserving the natural world and supporting local community well-being. Moreover, your program fees help support Oceanic Society’s global research, conservation, and outreach programs.

Established in 1969, Oceanic Society is America’s oldest nonprofit organization dedicated to ocean conservation. Throughout our history we have seen how conscientious nature travel can drive conservation and connect people to nature in meaningful ways. Our Expeditions programs have been a core component of how we pursue our mission for more than 45 years.

Each of our expeditions is designed with the intention to positively impact the natural areas and human communities we visit while also delivering transformative nature experiences for our travelers that deepen their connections to nature and promote the adoption of ocean-friendly “Blue Habits.” Moreover, any profits we earn are invested directly into our ocean research and conservation programs worldwide. In the last two fiscal years, our travel programs have generated nearly $1 million for ocean research and conservation programs. Here’s how it works.

OUR Conservation IMPACT in FY17From July 1, 2016 through June 30, 2017 Oceanic Society operated 35 conservation travel programs for 245 travelers across 20 countries. Through those programs we contributed $145,330 to ocean research and conservation efforts by our partners in the Caribbean, Coral Triangle, Florida, Galápagos Islands, Kenya, Mexico, Micronesia, and Senegal, and provided a total of 1,371 hours of volunteer time. Our contributions supported programs that study and protect manatees, sea turtles, coral reefs, dolphins, whales, and other marine species.

An additional $305,343 in revenue generated through our expeditions and San Francisco Bay Area whale watching programs was reinvested into Oceanic Society’s global marine research and conservation programs, including our California whale conservation programs, the State of the World’s Sea Turtles Program, our Blue Habits initiative, and the administration of our fiscally-sponsored projects. Total dollar contributions to research and conservation were $450,673.

IMPACT Example: KENYA: FROM HYENAS TO HUMPBACK WHALES

Oceanic Society led two “conservation safari” expeditions to Kenya in July 2017 (p. 34). The last 3 days of each expedition was spent with the Watamu Marine Association (WMA), a community-based organization that works to protect the environment and support sustainable development on Kenya’s coast. Oceanic Society has been supporting WMA’s marine mammal research and plastic pollution work since 2004. Our visits in 2017 contributed $3,500 to WMA while enhancing the experience of our travelers and getting us out to see 3 of the “Marine Big 5.”

IMPACT Example: Indonesia: DRAGONS TO DEBRIS LIVEABOARD TRIP

In November 2016 we partnered with Plastic Pollution Coalition, Mission Blue, and Drifter’s Project to field a 10-day, 21-person expedition from Bali to Komodo, Indonesia. The expedition sought to use ecotourism as a means to convene pollution experts, artists, conserva-tionists, and community members to discuss the work being done in Bali, and the work still needed, to ad-dress the growing amount of plastic pollution entering the ocean. Working with the Coral Triangle Center, we held meetings in Bali, collected water samples looking for microplastics, and filmed the entire journey.

Located in Indonesia’s West Papua Province, the Raja Ampat Archipelago is at the heart of the most biodiverse marine region on Earth—the Coral Triangle. Largely unexplored by scientists until recently, new marine species are being discovered here on a regular basis. Sixty miles off the southeastern coast of Cuba, Jardines de la Reina (Gardens of the Queen) National Park encompasses a chain of 250 virgin coral and mangrove islands. It is Cuba’s first marine park and the largest no-take marine reserve in the Caribbean. Due to its intact connectivity between seagrass beds, mangroves, and coral reefs, as well as the remoteness of the area and its long history of protection, Gardens of the Queen represents a “baseline” for a nearly pristine Caribbean marine ecosystem; an ecosystem that is home to healthy populations of Caribbean reef sharks and goliath groupers, important grazers like rainbow parrotfish and long-spine sea urchins, and recovering endangered species such as elkhorn coral and hawksbill sea turtles. Our expedition takes place aboard the 100-ft M/V Oceans for Youth, designed for sustainable exploration and research.

Nicaragua Adventure: Sea Turtles & VolcanoesVisit Central America’s hidden gem to see sea turtles, explore charming towns, and view active volcanoes.

Nicaragua has been gaining international acclaim as an “undiscovered” natural and cultural destination in recent years, and this trip will show you why. Our itinerary takes you along the Pacific coast from Juan Venado Nature Reserve and Padre Ramos Estuary in the north to San Juan del Sur and La Flor Wildlife Refuge in the south. These areas provide important habitat for four sea turtle species, and our trip is timed to coincide with the peak nesting of olive ridleys. We’ll have the chance to see both nesting adults and hatching babies, to snorkel with sea turtles, and with luck may see the mass nesting “arribada” of olive ridley turtles. We’ll also visit the colonial towns of Granada and Leon, enjoy a swim or paddle in a geothermal lake, and visit the smoldering Masaya volcano on our adventure.

SEASONS IN Galápagos: What is the BEST TIME TO GO?The Galápagos Islands are amazing to visit year-round, and there really is no “best” time to visit. Since the archipelago straddles the equator, the weather and climate do not vary much throughout the year, although there is some seasonal vari-ation to keep in mind when planning your trip. January - May is the warm season, during which skies are typically clearer; June - December is the “garúa” season, garúa being the local word for mist, since light drizzle often falls for an hour or so daily. Both seasons are comfortable and great for wildlife viewing and photography on land. If there is one time of year to avoid, it is September, which tends to have the “roughest” weather. Most Galápagos species are visible year round, with the notable exception of Waved Albatross, which leave the islands from January to March. Many mating behaviors occur only at certain times of year, so if you have a specific interest, let us know and we’ll help you choose the best time to travel!

Baja California’s San Ignacio Lagoon is the primary calving ground for eastern Pacific gray whales and part of Mexico’s El Vizcaíno Biosphere Reserve—the largest wildlife refuge in Latin America. The large concentration of gray whales that reside here each winter are extremely ‘friendly,’ and regularly approach our small whale watching pangas in a moving display that occurs nowhere else. The whales are the focus of our trip, and we will have three full days to observe them.

During our program we will also spend two days exploring the Sea of Cortez, one of the most productive seas on the planet. From the quaint town of Loreto we will have two days of private boat outings to search for blue whales and other marine mammals, and to enjoy the landscapes of the Gulf of California.

Join marine biologist Dr. Dení Ramírez for this one-of-a-kind expedition to look for and collect data on whale sharks in the Sea of Cortez. These gentle giants visit the Bay of La Paz to feed on plankton and then migrate to deeper waters around Espíritu Santo Island to give birth. Bring the whole family to swim, hike, kayak, snorkel, dive, and investigate nature in between whale shark sightings. Like many shark species, these animals are threatened with extinction, and Dení’s research contributes to the knowledge base needed to save them.

Our ship is a 45-foot catamaran with four double bed cabins, each with private baths and air conditioning. The boat is equipped with swim steps for easy water access, as well as kayaks and dive equipment upon request.

Join us for an exciting volunteer week on St. George’s Caye, Belize, a secluded island situated just a mile from the Belize Barrier Reef. The surrounding area supports healthy coral reefs, endangered manatees and sea turtles, Atlantic bottlenose dolphins, and is a nursery ground for queen conch. As a volunteer on this program, you’ll work with researchers from ECOMAR to collect data on coral reefs, sea turtles, queen conch, dolphins, and manatees along the reefs and seagrass beds of St. George’s Caye and in the many channels that make up the Drowned Cayes. Collected data adds to an annual report that will be shared with the St. George’s Caye Village Council and Fisheries Department. The final day of the program is spent visiting Hol Chan Marine Reserve to explore shallow patch reefs and compare fish abundance inside and outside the reserve.

Coral reefs are the most diverse and productive ecosystems in the oceans, and yet they are also among the most threatened. Shark populations are also in decline globally, and scientists have begun to explore the connections between shark abundance and coral reef health. Recent findings suggest that the healthiest reefs are those with the most sharks, but more work is needed to understand the linkages between shark abundance and reef health.

As a citizen scientist on this scuba diving program you will learn to identify and survey sharks, corals, and reef fish in order to compare reef health in areas of varying shark abundance. Your work will be a part of ongoing efforts to document shark populations in Palau. A wonderful way to explore Palau!
