2Installation PlanningThis chapter describes the power distribution principles, hardware quantity, parameters forinitially configuring the storage system, expansion plan, hardware layout plan, and data planningfor initially configuring the storage system to avoid unnecessary rework during and after theinstallation.
Power Distribution Principles
Before installing devices, work out a power distribution plan for optimal device security.
Table 2-1lists the power distribution principles that the storage system must comply with.
Table 2-1Power distribution principles for devices
Scenario Principle
Equipment room The power supply of a cabinet has a backup line.
The input voltages to a cabinet must be the same.
The power distribution unit (PDU) of a cabinet supports two independentpower supplies. Therefore, the failure of one power supply does not affectthe other power supply.
The rated load traffic of the power cables meets the maximum operatingpower of the cabinets and devices. The breaker and power cable match
design requirements.
The power input terminal of a cabinet must be convenient, safe, andreliable for connection.
Powerdistributioninside a cabinet
Power input lines of the device whose power input is redundant connectto different branches of the power supply.
The devices in the cabinet can be effectively protected against overcurrentand short circuit.
The power distribution of the cabinet supports online maintenance ofdevices (excluding the devices that require device-level backup and
auxiliary devices that do not affect the services in the cabinet).

Scenario Principle
It is recommended that you configure a PDU in the cabinet. Connect theexternal power supply to the PDU, then the PDU supplies power to the
devices in the cabinet.Devices in a cabinet can obtain power from the PDU of the cabinet ratherthan from another cabinet.
The actuator directions of the breakers in a PDU are the same. If theactuator direction is vertical, moving the actuator upward connects thepower supply, while moving the actuator downward disconnects thepower supply. If the actuator direction is horizontal, moving the actuatorto the left disconnects the power supply, while moving the actuator to theright connects the power supply.
The power cables and signal cables should be separately routed in the
cabinet. The distance between these two kinds of cables should be greaterthan 3 cm (1.182 inches).
Each circuit breaker in the PDU can only connect one load.
The power of the devices in the cabinet corresponds to the rated currentof the protection components. The devices and system enclosures of thesame model can obtain power from the protection components with thesame rated current.
When a breaker that needs onsite cable connection is vertically installed, feed cables from the top to the bottom of the breaker.
Hardware Quantity
Plan the hardware quantity before installing devices. Clarify the quantity of the hardware thatneeds to be installed and may be expanded later to avoid costly large-scale replacement andrelocation.
Expansion Planning
Work out a proper expansion plan before installing devices. Complying with the expansionprinciples improves installation efficiency.
When two S5500T devices with four controllers are configured, the disk enclosure expansionsolution for each S5500T is the same as that when one S5500T device with two controllers isconfigured.
This document uses the connection of four disk enclosures as an example to explain theexpansion principles that the storage system complies with, as shown in Figure 2-1.

1. Connect the expansion interface module in controller A to expansion module A of a diskenclosure, and connect the expansion interface module in controller B to expansion moduleB of a disk enclosure.
2. All the EXP ports on the storage system can connect only to the PRI ports. An incorrectconnection will cause a service interruption.
3. If the storage system is configuredwith two or more disk enclosures, you are recommendedto build up multiple loops according to the number of expansion ports on the controllerenclosure, and the disk enclosures should be evenly allocated to the loops.
4. Each SAS expansion port can be connected to a maximum of 12 disk enclosures. Each SASinterface module can be connected to a maximum of three high-density disk enclosures.
5. Except that the configuration disk enclosure must be directly connected to controller A andcontroller B, all other disk enclosures in the same expansion loop must form twoindependent and redundant links to achieve optimal network reliability.
NOTE
Figure 2-1depicts two loops with one above and the other beneath the controller enclosure. For eachloop, the red cables and green cables produce two independent links for redundancy.
Layout Planning
Plan the device layout before installing the devices. A proper layout ensures the normal runningof the storage devices. The devices in the storage system must comply with the following layoutprinciples:
1. It is recommended that you reserve a 1 U (44.45 mm, 1.75 in.) space between two devices,
if possible. Alternatively, you can set five disk enclosures as a group. In a cabinet, at least1 U space should be reserved between disk enclosure groups for convenient managementand less shock transfer.
2. The layout plan meets the requirement of power supply and cooling system of the equipmentroom (depending on the cooling effect of the air conditioner). It is recommended that youplace up to 10 disk enclosures in a single cabinet.
3. The distance between two adjacent cabinets should be at least 100 cm (3.28 ft.). The distancebetween a cabinet and the wall should be at least 120 cm (3.94 ft.).
4. The bearable weight of the guide rails of a cabinet should be greater than 50 kg (110.25lb).
5. It is recommended that youuse 6 m of SAS cables to connect different cabinets.
6. It is recommended that the controller enclosure be installed in the middle of the cabinet(from 15 U to 18 U). 2 U space should be reserved above and beneath the controllerenclosure for installing a potential side-hanging fiber reel and the cable tray respectively.
7. If two S5500T devices with four controllers are configured, you are advised to install thetwo S5500T devices in different cabinets.
