Marrickville Council Gives $1,000 to NSW fencing

Mayor Jo Haylen (in blue) presented Marrickville Council’s 2013 Recreational Grants for a range of sports activities in the Marrickville area, including $1,000 to NSW Fencing represented by the President, Duncan Fairweather (second from left). The Marrickville grant was used for the recently acquired roll-out pistes in use at Marrickville PCYC. Thanks to Tanya Buchanan for successfully applying for the grant.

NSW fencers returned from the Junior (Under 20) Aus-tralian championships in Perth bearing the E. J. v Szakall Trophy for overall points. NSW fencers scored 486 points to edge out Victoria on 468 points.

The results show NSW has talent in depth across the range of weapons.

Our sabreurs performed particularly well. The individual men’s event was won by Boston Fawkes with Jasper Rowley second and Matthew Tadros third. The men’s sa-bre A team of Boston, Jasper and Alexandre Douglas beat Western Australia A 45 - 21 to take gold and our B team of Sean Andrews, David Lu and Matthew took bronze.

In women’s sabre, Natalie Molen-Grigull and Grace White each took an individual bronze then teamed up with Mathilda Barnard and Alice Clementson to win the team event, beating Queensland 45 - 40.

Another team gold was won by our women foilists with Beatrice Hay, Alice Heraud, Katharine Kwa and Leah Mangion defeating Malaysia 45 - 34. Katharine took sil-ver in the individual foil.

In men’s foil, our A team comprising Patrick Daley, Mat-thew Donald, Sholto Douglas and Sam Mooney-Grand won silver and our B team of Kimbrian Canavan, Simon Capon, Matthew Donald and Jesse Morris took bronze.

Bronze medals too for our women’s epee B team of Lind-say Fordham, Emily Principe and Ashleigh Syme.

Well done all.

Please Register OnlineFencers are asked to please register for State competitions online by cob on the Thursday prior to a Sunday competition. Too many fencers are leaving it until the weekend to advise that they will be attending or just turning up on the day. This makes it difficult for the competition organisers to check entries and plan the competition. Competitions run more smoothly if the number of competitors is known in advance.

Sally’s Fighting FitHealthy juicesThe combination of certain fruits and vegetables can produce results that each fruit/vegetable can’t do on its own. This is because when they’re mixed, they create something new, just like the combination of 2 parts hydrogen and 1 part oxygen creates water.

Have a read through the effects these different juice combinations produce, and try the ones that produce the effect you’re looking for:

Carrot + Ginger + Apple - boosts and cleanses your system.

Apple + Cucumber + Celery - prevents cancer, reduces cholesterol, and alleviates stomach upset and headache.

Tomato + Carrot + Apple - improves skin complexion and bad breath.

Bitter gourd + Apple + Milk - improves bad breath and reduces internal body heat.

Orange + Ginger + Cucumber – improves skin texture and moistures and reduces body heat.

Pineapple + Apple + Watermelon - dispels excess salts, nourishes the bladder and kidneys.

Apple + Cucumber + Kiwi - improves skin complexion.

Pear & Banana - regulates sugar content

Carrot + Apple + Pear + Mango - reduces body heat (something all fencers need - especially in Summer!), counteracts toxicity, decreases blood pressure and fights oxidisation.

Honeydew + Grape + Watermelon + Milk - rich in vitamins C and B2 which increase cell activity and strengthen body immunity.

Papaya + Pineapple + Milk - rich in vitamins C and E and iron; improves skin complexion and metabolism.

Banana + Pineapple + Milk - rich in vitamins, nutritious and prevents constipation.

New Working With Children CheckThe NSW Government has introduced new arrangements for the Working with Children Check for self-employed people (coaches) and for volunteers/students who work with children under the age of 18.

The new arrangements include a timetable for renewal of the Working with Children Check.

Coaches who currently hold a valid Working With Children Check self-employed certificate will need to renew their certificate during the year 2015. This certificate is required for coaches who accept payment for their services.

New coaches who don’t yet have a Working with Children Check certificate should apply for one now via the website below. The cost is $80.

Having a valid Working With Children Check is a NSWFA membership requirement for affiliated coaches.

Volunteers/students who work with children will need to update their Working with Children Check in 2015. This involves making a declaration that they are not a person prohibited from working with children. Volunteers/ students who have not yet made a declaration need not do so until 2015.

The Working with Children Check for volunteers/students covers anyone who works with children in an unpaid capacity. This will include NSWFA and club officials, volunteers at competitions, squads and camps, and coaches working voluntarily with children.

There is no cost for a Working with Children Check for volunteers/students.

For further information please go to www.newcheck.nsw.gov.au or call 02 9286 7276.

Completing the successful series of regional championships held throughout August and September, the Wagga Wagga Fencing Club hosted the annual Riverina Regional Championships at the Riverina Anglican College. The championships recorded over 110 entries across 10 events, with fencers from 12 different clubs trav-elling from as far afield as Sydney, Bathurst, Griffith, the Southern Highlands and Canberra to compete.

This the is fifth year the championships have been held in Wagga Wagga, and the first time the competition has been held over two days. Beautiful fencing across the multiple weapons produced many surprises and nail-biting bouts.

The club would like to thank Gordon Christie, Hans Dimpel, and Jeff Gray for their support in providing technical direction and equipment, along with those who volunteered their time to referee, and feed the fencers over the weekend.

In addition to the usual events, the Tony Dominguez Memorial Trophy was awarded to Emmett Marks, while the Riverina Anglican College Team received the trophy for the Rules Club Team Challenge. Results are below, while full listings are available on the NSWFA website.

Local HeroesCommunity newspapers are hungry for news about local people so they’re a good way to promote fencing in your local area. If you have a fencing story, maybe about a club activity or a local fencer doing well in competition, think about letting your local newspaper know. They might send along a reporter or photographer or take a story and a picture that you submit.

Here’s a good example - a story about Corey Spiteri in a Maltese community newspaper.
