Welcome to the 15th Anniversary Open House New York Weekend! When the first Open House New York Weekend took place on October 11 and 12, 2003, New York was a different city. It was that year that an exhibition opened in Grand Central of ideas for what to do with an abandoned elevated railroad running through West Chelsea, then a neighborhood of mechanics and manufacturers. The Brooklyn waterfront was lined with decaying piers and the federal government sold Governors Island to the city for a dollar. A master plan for the World Trade Center site had been just been selected and the public got its first look at the design for what was then known as the Freedom Tower.

In the intervening decade and a half, New York has undergone extraordinary development that has transformed the city and our experience of it. The doors that OHNY Weekend opened during this period helped all of us better understand how New York was changing and fueled a conversation about the kind of city we want to leave for future generations. But OHNY Weekend is also an important reminder about the fundamental importance of openness and access to a healthy civic life. Now more than ever, an open door is a symbol of what we value as a city–an openness to new people and ideas, to each other, and to the places that we share as a community.

As you travel the city this OHNY Weekend, be sure to take a moment to celebrate the openness that makes New York the greatest city in the world, and give thanks to the site hosts and volunteers who have made this event possible for the past fifteen years!

Dear Friends,

I am delighted to welcome everyone to the 15th Annual Open House New York Weekend.

As a former colonial port city that grew and evolved into a global center of commerce, culture, innovative design and awe-inspiring skyscrapers, New York has a long and fascinating architectural legacy. Founded in 2003 to showcase our city’s diverse urban landscape, OHNY offers residents and visitors of all backgrounds the opportunity to explore more than 250 historic and contemporary buildings, private residences, infrastructure sites, and public spaces in all five boroughs, and to learn more about preservation, design, and industrial advancements through talks by architects, historians, and other specialists.

The 2017 OHNY Weekend features evergreen favorites that have participated annually for the past 15 years – such as the Masonic Hall in Manhattan’s Flatiron District and Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx – as well as many exciting additions, among them the Flagship Brewing Company in Staten Island and Brooklyn’s Gowanus Canal Conservancy Salt Lot. This year’s edition also emphasizes how thoughtful urban planning can strengthen communities and improve our city’s sustainability and resiliency through its “Celebrating Civic Excellence” program featuring municipal facilities developed by the NYC Department of Design and Construction, including the new Kew Gardens Hill Library in Queens and the Sims Sunset Park Material Recovery Facility, an 11-acre waterfront recycling center.

On behalf of all New Yorkers, congratulations to OHNY and its organizers, supporters and participants, past and present, for fifteen wonderful years of highlighting the remarkable history, ingenuity and diversity of New York’s built environment. Please accept my best wishes for an engaging weekend and a festive anniversary celebration.

Sincerely,

Gregory Wessner EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OPEN HOUSE NEW YORK

From historic farmhouses built in the city’s earliest days, to new buildings at the cutting edge of design and technology, hundreds of sites across all five boroughs are open to visit, with tours, talks, and other special events taking place over the course of the Weekend.

Celebrating its fifteenth anniversary this year, OHNY Weekend deepens our understanding of the importance of architecture and urban design to fostering a more vibrant civic life, and helps catalyze a citywide conversation about how to build a better New York.

CELEBRATING CIVIC EXCELLENCEThe growth of Open House New York Weekend over the past decade and a half has roughly paralleled that of a city initiative that has had an extraordinary impact on the quality of civic architecture in New York: the Design + Construction Excellence Program of the New York City Department of Design and Construction (DDC). DDC is the city agency responsible for building many of the municipal facilities that New Yorkers use every day:buildings and interiors such as libraries, museums, and senior centers, as well as courthouses, fire stations, and even roadways and sewers.

With the creation of the Design + Construction Excellence (DCE) program in 2004, the city reasserted its commitment to giving New Yorkers public buildings worthy of the greatest city in the world. Working with some of New York’s best architects and designers, DCE has invested in design to elevate not just how a building looks, but the durability of its materials, the way it functions, and most importantly, how it enriches the lives of the New Yorkers who use it. It is in part because of DCE that New York City is now considered among the leading centers of architecture in the world.

Working in partnership with DDC, Open House New York is proud to open a small selection of the hundreds of projects that have been built through DCE, as a way to recognize and celebrate the importance of the civic realm to shaping the day-to-day lives of all New Yorkers.

To Rick Bell at the New York City Department of Design and Construction for partnering with us on the special series Celebrating Civic Excellence, and to everyone involved with the NYC DDC’s Design + Construction Excellence program for championing great design in the civic realm.

To Koray Duman, Benjamin Cadena, and Julia van den Hout for partnering with us to organize the special series New Practices New York.

To Dee Dunn and the dsgnfix team for donating their time and resources to make OHNY Weekend sites available on dsgnfix.

To Richard Knipel of Wikimedia NYC for organizing this year's photo competition, and Zim Pham of New York City Photo Safari for generously donating prizes for the winners.

To Wini Lao, who volunteered her time to compile an exhaustive database of every site’s participation in OHNY Weekend over the first 14 years of the festival, making the special series highlighting 15 and 10+ Year Sites possible.

To Linda Miller, OHNY’s press and media relations consultant, and one of Open House New York's most indefatigable supporters from the beginning.

To OHNY's founder, Scott Lauer, who returned to New York after living abroad and volunteering for Open House London, decided the five boroughs deserved a similar event, and made it happen.

And to the hundreds of people across the city who will open their doors, lead tours, and join us in celebrating the importance of access to public life in the world’s greatest city at a time when openness is more critical than ever. Without the site hosts, there would be no OHNY Weekend—so please remember to thank your hosts as you explore the city this year!

About the CoverThe cover for this year’s event guide is inspired by Getting to Zero, Open House New York’s yearlong series about New York City’s waste system, and by the principles of creative reuse, which uses creativity to transform what might otherwise be trash into works of art.

New York is lucky to have one of the leading creative reuse centers in the country at Materials for the Arts, a nonprofit organization in Queens run by the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs with support from the Departments of Sanitation and Education. MFTA collects a wide variety of unneeded, reusable items from businesses and individuals and then makes those items available for free to arts organizations, artists, and schools, diverting more than a million pounds of material from landfills each year.

For this year’s cover, OHNY collaborated with artist Juan Hinojosa, a recent artist-in-residence at MFTA who transforms trash, discarded items, and found objects into works of art. Using paper, objects and other material found at MFTA, Juan created the work seen on this year’s cover, which was then photographed in MFTA’s warehouse. And in the true spirit of reuse, much of what you see on the cover was returned to the shelves for future use by other organizations and artists.

For more information about MFTA, visit mfta.org. To see more of Juan’s work, visit his website juanhinojosa.com or follow him on Instagram at juan_hinojosa_.

Tour the cover: Want to see Juan’s artwork and explore the Materials for the Arts warehouse? Materials for the Arts will be open for tours during OHNY Weekend on Saturday, October 14. Check out their listing on pg 28 in the guide for more information.
