2018 BIG SOUTH FOOTBALLAND THEY’RE OFF...Preseason favorite Kennesaw State sits atop the Big South standings at 2-0 -- the program’s second consecutive 2-0 start to the conference season. This week, Monmouth is looking to open 2-0 in the Big South for the second straight year, while Charleston Southern is seeking its fi rst 2-0 Big South start under second-year head coach MARK TUCKER.

FARRI RUNS LIKE A FERARRIMonmouth freshman RB JUWON FARRI rushed for a Big South single-season high 239 yards this past Saturday against Campbell -- the seventh-highest single-game output in league history. Farri’s total was the fi fth-highest by a Big South freshman, and the most rushing yards in a game since Presbyterian’s LANCE BRYD gained 274 against Charleston Southern during his freshman year of 2009. Farri has rushed for 422 yards in his last two outings, and now leads the Big South with 674 on the year.

REG-GIE, REG-GIEMonmouth senior WR REGGIE WHITE JR. is the Big South’s all-time receptions leader with 225, as he became the record holder this past Saturday with fi ve receptions against Campbell. He broke the record of 223 that was held by Gardner-Webb’s JAMES PERRY III from 2008-11. White, who eclipsed the 200-reception barrier in Week 4 at Princeton, ranks second in conference annals with 2,945 career receiving yards, and is 226 shy of breaking the Big South record of 3,170 set by Liberty’s DARRIN PETERSON from 2012-15. White owns fi ve career 10-reception games, the second-most in Big South history behind Charleston Southern’s MAURICE PRICE’s record total of eight, and is sixth with 24 career touchdown grabs.

TWO TIMERSMonmouth has had an individual rush for more than 200 yards in a game twice this season -- PETE GUERRIERO in Week 2 (209 vs. Hampton) and JUWON FARRI this past Saturday (239 vs. Campbell). The Hawks are the fi rst Big South team to have two individuals with 200-yard rushing performances in the same year since Stony Brook in 2008. Stony Brook was also the last Big South team to have multiple 200-yard individual efforts in a season (MIGUEL MAYSONET three times in 2012).

GOING FOR TWOCampbell R-freshman WR CALEB SNEAD was named one of 15 initial candidates for the JERRY RICE FCS National Freshman of the Year Award. Last season, the Big South had the Rice Award winner in Kennesaw State’s BRYSON ARMSTRONG. Snead leads the Big South with six touchdown receptions, is second with 529 receiving yards and posted the conference’s fi rst 10-reception game of the season with 10 grabs (for 188 yards) at Monmouth this past Saturday. His 19.59 yards per catch leads the league, and he is looking to become just the fourth freshman and eighth play-er overall to fi nish a campaign with a 20.00 yards per catch average (based on a minimum two receptions per game). Presbyterian’s SEAN ADEGBOLA was the fi rst with 21.50 yards per catch in 2009, followed by Kennesaw State’s JUSTIN SUMPTER in 2015 (20.19 average), and Charleston Southern’s KAMERON BROWN in 2016 (20.00).

NIGHT OWLSKennesaw State has won 14 consecutive regular-season FCS games, tying the Big South record. The Owls’ 56-17 win at Gardner-Webb in Week 7 matched the mark of 14 that was fi rst established by Stony Brook from 2011-12, and tied by Coastal Carolina from 2012-13. KSU has won its last eight regular-season non-conference FCS contests, which is tied for third-longest streak in Big South annals. That record is 18 (Coastal Carolina from 2013-15).

BREAKING UP IS EASY TO DOMonmouth DB JUSTIN TERRY was credited with seven pass break-ups this past Saturday against Campbell -- a Big South single-game record. The old mark was fi ve, which was accomplished three times and last by Charleston Southern’s SHADARIUS HOPKINS last season vs. Liberty. Ber-ry’s seven total passes defended tied the Big South single-game record fi rst set by CSU’s CHARLES JAMES (3 INT, 4 PBU) in 2010 at Liberty. Meanwhile, the Hawks fi nished with 12 pass break-ups against the Camels -- which also tied the Big South single-game record and was last done in 2013.

POLL POSITIONKennesaw State is ranked No. 2 in both the AFCA FCS Coaches and STATS FCS polls this week. The Big South has had a Top 25 program in 98 of the last 102 polling weeks -- including a streak of 83 consecutive weeks from Oct. 17, 2011 to Oct. 1, 2017. KSU began the season ranked No. 5 in both preseason polls -- which was tied for the highest season-opening ranking in conference annals.

2018 BIG SOUTH FOOTBALLBIG SOUTH’S EXCLUSIVE ESPN3 SLATE CONTINUES SATURDAYThe Big South’s exclusive TV package on ESPN3 continues Saturday with Campbell hosting Gard-ner-Webb at 4:00pm. EVAN BUDROVICH (play-by-play), JAY SONNHALTER (analyst) and ERIN SUMMERS (sideline) have the call from Buies Creek. ESPN3 is televising a Big South contest every week the remainder of the season, including a “Wildcard” selection for the Nov. 17 season fi nale.

HOT STARTSKennesaw State owns a +140 scoring margin in the fi rst half of games this season, as the Owls own a 182-42 advantage in the opening 30 minutes -- including a remarkable 112-17 margin in the second quarter. Campbell’s fi rst quarter exploits is 96-20, while its fi rst half total stands at 152-50.

CHANDLER CAN HANDLE THE ROCKKennesaw State QB CHANDLER BURKS leads all of FCS in rushing touchdowns and total touch-downs with 17 -- the second-highest Big South single-season total by a quarterback and one shy of matching his single-season record of 18 he set last year. The 17 scores have come in the last six games -- all multi-TD efforts and tied with Stony Brook’s MIGUEL MAYSONET (2012) and former teammate CHASTON BENNETT (2016) for the longest multi-TD streak in Big South history.

KEEPING UP WITH THIS JONESMonmouth RB DEVELL JONES notched his longest career touchdown run in Week 7 against Buck-nell, as his 12-yard score in the fourth quarter was his fi rst from more than 10 yards out. The short-yardage specialist owns 19 career touchdown runs with the Hawks, which have gone for an average of 3.47 yards. In 2017, Jones scored 11 times on runs of 6, 6, 8, 4, 1, 3, 4, 4, 1, 2 and 1 yards for an average of 3.64. This year, his eight touchdown runs have gone for 3, 2, 4, 2, 1, 12, 1 and 1 for a 3.25 average yard per TD run.

KENNESAW’S BUZZSAW SCORING OFFENSEKennesaw State leads the league with 48.1 points per game -- second nationally -- and is pac-ing ahead of the Big South single-season scoring offense record of 42.6 set by Liberty in 2007. The Owls have scored at least 50 points in their last three Big South games, which is tied for the longest-such streak in conference history. During Weeks 2-4, the Owls scored 182 points -- the most in league history in a three-game span (49 at Tennessee Tech in Week 2, 63 vs. Alabama State in Week 3 and 70 against Clark Atlanta in Week 4). The old record was 171 set by Gardner-Webb from 2004-05 and Coastal Carolina in 2013. Kennesaw State is the fi rst Big South member with back-to-back 60-point games.

HOUSE CALLSKennesaw State tied the Big South record for most consecutive home wins, as the Owls won their 13th-straight contest inside Fifth Third Bank Stadium in Week 6. KSU equaled the record fi rst set by Stony Brook from 2011-12 and tied by Coastal Carolina from 2012-14. Meanwhile, Monmouth has won its last nine home games, the longest in program history, and fi fth-longest in Big South annals.

MR. SMITH GOES TO... THE HOUSECampbell QB DANIEL SMITH is the fi rst signal-caller in Big South history with 10 passing touch-downs and 10 rushing scores in the same season, as he has 11 passing strikes and 10 rushing TDs this year. His achieved the feat this past Saturday at Monmouth with a 12-yard run to the end zone. Smith, who is also the fi rst Big South quarterback in conference annals with three consecu-tive 100-yard rushing games, is third in the nation with 132 points responsible for and is fi fth in the country with 10 rushing touchdowns. Smith is also on pace to become just the second player in conference annals with 2,000 passing yards and 800 rushing yards, as he needs 603 passing and 305 rushing yards in the Camels’ four remaining contests to reach both totals. Liberty QB MIKE BROWN fi rst achieved the feat in 2010 (2,956 passing, 854 rushing).

BIRDS OF PREYKennesaw State leads the Big South in scoring defense at 12.4, total defense at 264.1 and is second in rushing defense at 113.1 The Owls are pacing ahead of the conference’s single-season records of 15.5 (scoring defense) and 292.0 (total defense), and just trails the rushing defense record of 101.0. Kennesaw State was the fi rst team in Big South history to limit fi ve consecutive opponents to 13 points or less, as KSU posted a game-by-game streak of 10-13-13-10-0 from Weeks 2-6.

BURKS BREAKS ANOTHER TOUCHDOWN RECORDKennesaw State QB CHANDLER BURKS notched his ninth career game with at least three rushing touchdowns in Week 7 at Gardner-Webb, extending his Big South career record for most 3-TD rushing games and overall 3-TD scoring efforts. His two career 4-touchdown games are second-most in Big South history, while his 11 overall multi-TD games ranks tied for fi fth-most.

6 • 2018 Big South Football Weekly Report - Oct. 22

2018 BIG SOUTH FOOTBALLBIG SOUTH NETWORK NOW SHOWING ON ESPN+The Big South Conference and ESPN reached a seven-year extension to its media rights deal in July that will see close to 1,000 annual conference events carried on ESPN networks -- including a minimum 900 events each year on ESPN+, the fi rst multi-sport, direct-to-consumer subscription streaming service from The Walt Disney Company Direct-to-Consumer & International segment and ESPN which launched in April. The agreement runs through 2024-25, 34 years since the longstanding relationship began in 1991. The comprehensive new deal makes ESPN+ the exclusive streaming home of Big South Network productions. Big South football continues to air on ESPN3, which features an 8-game exclusive package.

POINT OF ORDERMonmouth holds the Big South’s longest active scoring streak at 44 games -- the 10th-longest overall string in league annals, and just ahead of Kennesaw State’s string of 43 games. The ninth-longest such streak is 47, while the league record is 144. Meanwhile, Kennesaw State owns the league’s longest active streak for double-fi gure scoring games at 21, which is the 10th-longest such string in Big South history and one away from ninth.

CHANDLER BURKS - RUSH CHAIRMANKennesaw State QB CHANDLER BURKS has 44 career rushing touchdowns -- the most by a Big South QB and third all-time on the Big South career list -- and just four away from all-time record of 48 held by MIQUEL MAYSONET. Burks’ total is tied for fi fth on the league’s overall all-time TD chart, and he is on track to become the fi rst player in league annals with 30 career rushing (44) and passing (28) scores. In addition, Burks is fi fth all-time with 72 touchdowns responsible for. The second Big South quarterback to eclipse 2,000 career rushing yards (having reached the milestone in Week 2 as the 24th overall player), his total of 2,424 ranks 15th on the all-time list and 56 shy of moving into the Top 10.

PICK SIX DOUBLEDThe Big South has recorded a pick-six eight times this season, the most interception return touch-downs in the league since 2014 when eight opposing passes were returned for scores. Campbell, Charleston Southern and Kennesaw State share the conference lead with two pick-sixes, while the Owls tied the league single-game record with two INT return touchdowns against Clark Atlanta in Week 4, the fourth such occurrence in Big South history.

HARTSHORN NAMED SEMIFINALIST FOR NFF’S CAMPBELL TROPHYCampbell LB THOMAS HARTSHORN was named a Semifi nalist for the National Football Founda-tion’s Campbell Trophy on Sept. 26, which is known as the “Academic Heisman” and recognizes an individual as the absolute best football scholar-athlete in the nation. He is the third Big South player to be recognized as a semifi nalist, joining Coastal Carolina’s NICCOLO MASTROMATTEO in 2013 and Charleston Southern’s BEN ROBINSON in 2016.

THE WORDSMITHCampbell’s DANIEL SMITH shares the Big South lead in multi-TD pass games (3) and has thrown a touchdown strike in all seven games this season. In Week 4, he passed for 227 yards and rushed for 100 against Shaw, the 10th 200-passing / 100-rushing game in Big South history. He threw for more than 200 yards and at least one score in each of his four games this season -- just the fi fth QB in Big South history to open a campaign with this achievement. In Week 1, Smith accounted for fi ve of the Camels’ seven touchdowns in their season-opening win over Chowan. He rushed for two scores and passed for three to become the fi rst quarterback in Big South history with 2 TD rushes and 3 TD passes in a season-opening contest.

BIG BROWNCharleston Southern senior DL SOLOMON BROWN became the fi fth Big South player with 40.0 career tackles-for-loss when he eclipsed the milestone with 4.5 in Week 6 at Savannah State. He is fi fth all-time with 42.0 TFL, which have come in 39 career appearances. Brown ranks sev-enth with 15.5 career quarterback sacks, and needs fi ve to become just the fourth player with 20. Meanwhile, Brown entered the league’s 200-career tackle club during the season opener at Florida and now sits at 233 (117-solo, 116-assisted).

SUPER SUMPTERKennesaw State WR JUSTIN SUMPTER posted his 100th career reception in Week 5 against Sam-ford. He is 166 receiving yards shy of becoming the 15th Big South player with 2,000. His 18.34 career yards per catch is second in Big South history among individuals with 100+ career recep-tions, trailing Stony Brook’s KEVIN NORRELL’s record average of 19.26 (107 for 2,061). Meanwhile, Sumpter is one TD catch away from 20, which would make him the 11th player to reach that benchmark.

2018 BIG SOUTH FOOTBALLBIG SOUTH AND HARDEE’S PARTNER FOR GREAT CAUSEThe Big South Conference and corporate partner HARDEE’s and BODDIE-NOELL are proud to an-nounce a continuation of a joint fundraising program that has provided $6,000 to THE PATRIOT FOUNDATION the past two seasons. The organizations will once again support military families and veterans with a special promotion during seven football games for the third consecutive year, as the Big South and Hardee’s will each donate $5 for every point scored during designated home football games. The fi rst game benefi tting the Foundation was Campbell’s home contest vs. Wagner in Week 6. The next fundraising dates will be in November.

IT’S BO TIMEKennesaw State head coach BRIAN BOHANNON became the third-fastest Big South coach to win 30 games when he reached the benchmark with KSU’s 24-10 win over Samford in Week 5 -- just his 41st career game on the sideline. The record is 38 games (Coastal Carolina’s JOE MOGLIA), followed by 40 games (Coastal Carolina’s DAVID BENNETT).

KICK ITKennesaw State leads the nation with a 45.70 kickoff return average (10 for 457). No Big South team has averaged 30.0 yards on kickoff returns, as the league record is 26.1 (Liberty in 2011).

HIGH FIVECampbell’s fi ve wins are tied for the second-most victories by a member in its fi rst year in the Big South. Excluding the Big South’s inaugural season of 2002, the Camels are one win away from matching the record of six. That total has been accomplished four times -- Coastal Carolina (2003), VMI (2003), Monmouth (2014) and Kennesaw State (2015).

40-40 CLUBPresbyterian’s DaSHAWN DAVIS is just the fourth Big South player with 40 career punt returns and 40 career kickoff returns. He tied a Big South single-game record with six punt returns against Bluefi eld College in Week 4 -- the seventh different player at the time with a half-dozen punt returns in a contest. Davis’ career returns total 44 punts (270 yards) and 47 kickoffs (885 yards), and his combined 91 kick returns are eighth all-time in league annals.

THREE-LEGGED RACEKennesaw State QB CHANDLER BURKS surpassed 2,000 career rushing yards in Week 2 at Ten-nessee Tech and is the program’s all-time leader with 2,424. Teammate RBs DARNELL HOLLAND (1,885) and JAKE McKENZIE (1,788) could join Burks in the 2,000-yard club this season, which would mark the fi rst time in Big South history that one school had three active 2,000-yard ca-reer rushers. Together, the trio has combined for 6,097 rushing yards and 73 scores. Meanwhile, sophomore RB SHAQUIL TERRY surpassed 1,000 career yards in Week 5 and owns a career yards per carry average of 11.29 (102 for 1,152) in 21 games.

JAKE, FROM STATE OF NEW JERSEYMonmouth TE JAKE POWELL is fi fth in Big South annals for most career catches among tight ends with 54, and is six receptions away of becoming the fourth with 60. He is also fi fth on the tight end career ledger with 646 receiving yards and needs 27 yards to move into fourth.

PIERCING PEARSONPresbyterian WR KEITH PEARSON became the fi rst Big South player since 2015 to throw a touch-down pass and catch a TD strike in the same game when he achieved the feat in Week 4 against Bluefi eld College. Pearson caught a 46-yarder midway through the second quarter, and later connected with fellow WR DaSHAWN DAVIS on a 29-yard scoring play early in the third period. Kennesaw State’s JAKE McKENZIE was the last player with the TD throw/catch effort in a game, which was against Liberty on Oct. 24, 2015.

DO THE RUNNING MANKennesaw State is second in the country with a league-leading 377.0 rushing yards per game -- which is pacing ahead of the Big South single-season record of 357.5 (VMI in 2008). The Owls rushed for 507 yards in Week 2 at Tennessee Tech, the Big South’s second-highest single-game rushing total against an FCS opponent and fi fth-highest overall output in a contest. KSU has rushed for more than 400 yards in four of seven games this season.

HOP, SKIP AND A JUMPCharleston Southern DB SHADARIUS HOPKINS is tied for fi fth all-time in Big South history with 26 career pass break-ups, and needs four to become the fi fth player with 30. His 30 career passes defended ranks tied for 11th in league annals. Hopkins is 10 away from becoming just the third player with 40 passes defended in a career.

2018 BIG SOUTH FOOTBALLBIG SOUTH’S FCS SUCCESSThe Big South is 11-9 this season against non-conference FCS foes, and is seeking to extend its current streak of fi ve consecutive winning regular-seasons against non-league competition. Since the start of the 2013 campaign, the Big South is 91-52 ( =63.6 winning percentage) in regular-season competition and 98-60 ( =62.0) when including postseason games in that span.

SIR ISAAC KICKOFF RETURNKennesaw State’s ISAAC FOSTER returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown in Week 7 at Gard-ner-Webb -- his second 100-yard kickoff return TD this season. He is the fi rst Big South player with this achievement, and the fi rst FCS player with two 100-yard kickoff return TDs in a season since Incarnate Word’s DESMOND HITE in 2017. Foster is the sixth different Big South player with two kickoff return scores in a campaign, and the fi rst since 2015. He owns a 59.5 kickoff return average this season (4 for 238), but does not qualify for the conference or national leaders due to not meeting the minimum 1.2 returns per game.

THOMPSON TWINKennesaw State K JUSTIN THOMPSON has made 119 consecutive PAT’s and is KSU’s all-time lead-ing scorer with 272 points, which ranks fi fth in Big South history among kickers and ninth overall. Thompson is tied for the national lead among FCS kickers for most PATs made this season with 42.

THIRSTING FOR MOREThe Campbell Camel defense tied the Big South record for most consecutive games holding an opponent to less than 10 points at three games. The Camels permitted just 10 total points in three-straight outings during Weeks 4-6, and are the third different program with this achieve-ment, joining Coastal Carolina (2008 and 2014) and Charleston Southern (2015). Campbell’s 10 points allowed in the three games is the second-fewest and just behind CCU’s 9 points allowed in 2014.

CAUGHT IN A WEBB OF TOP 10 OPPONENTSGardner-Webb is the second team in Big South history to play three Top 10 programs during the regular-season -- all of which occurred in a six-game span. In Week 2, GWU faced No. 5/6 North Carolina A&T and later hosted No. 6/7 Wofford in Week 5. In Week 7, the Runnin’ Bulldogs hosted No. 2/3 Kennesaw State. In 2015, former member Liberty faced three Top 10 teams in the regular-season, two of which were conference games.

IMPECCABLE FILM STUDYMonmouth QB KENJI BAHAR and Campbell QB DANIEL SMITH are the only quarterbacks in Big South history with a 60+-yard rushing touchdown and 80+-yard passing touchdown in the same game -- which was accomplished this season in back-to-back weeks against the same opponent = Wagner. In Week 5, Bahar scored on a 68-yard run before connecting with REGGIE WHITE JR. on an 84-yard touchdown pass. In Week 6, Smith found AARON BLOCKMON for an 84-yard scoring strike before reeling off his own 66-yard run for a touchdown.

De-GRASSO HIGHMonmouth’s VINNY GRASSO amassed 306 all-purpose yards in the Hawks’ Week 5 victory over Wagner. It was the Big South’s fi rst such 300-yard game since 2015 and the seventh overall in league annals. Grasso’s total is the sixth-highest single-game mark, and featured 38 rushing, 58 receiving, 147 kickoff return and 63 punt return yards.

THOMAS THE TRAINGardner-Webb LB SHAI THOMAS became just the second Big South player with a fumble recov-ery touchdown and interception return touchdown in the same game when he scored on back-to-back possessions in Week 1 against Limestone. Thomas fi rst recovered a fumble in the end zone caused by teammate ALEXANDER IKOKU’s strip-sack at the goal line. On the fourth play of the ensuing drive, Thomas’ pick-six went for 41 yards. Gardner-Webb’s MARIO WILLIAMS was the fi rst with this achievement in 2004 at Tennessee Tech, which was also the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ season-opener.

KENNESAW STATE LANDS TOP PRESEASON SPOTFor the fi rst time, Kennesaw State is the outright favorite in the annual Big South preseason football poll, as the defending conference champion claimed the top spot in the 2018 preseason ranking as voted by the league’s head coaches and media panel. The Owls received 17 of the 18 fi rst-place votes, and begin their title defense Oct. 6 at home against Presbyterian. KSU was the preseason co-favorite in 2017.
