Amyrsquos book review new from market by Susan Jones Finger Step Designs
From clothing repair roots to creative images and decoration on fabric Pattern Darning has a colorful past but also a creative future
You are probably familiar with the repeats of basic and elaborate Darning Patterns presented in previous publications This book offers more of the running stitch fill patterns but also jumps into the deep end of the pool with reverse patterns two-color patterns and PATTERNS IN PATTERNS
The fill patterns borders stand-alones and medallions are charted in blocks and shapes to fit the suggested areas for the projects in the book The beauty and versatility of these stitches are obvious to the viewer There are abundant black and white photographs of the actual stitching as well
Side by Side - Pattern Darning in the 21st Century
Thread weight suggestions and photo comparison can be found on page 3
Page 4 explains turning and dealing with completing the pattern on
one row and beginning the pattern on the next row Page 5 addresses line charting versus cross stitch charting and includes hints for planning and stitching Then flip your way through 77 pages bubbling over with incredible patterns for Darning

Kit 1 is currently being boxed and shippedhelliphard to fit rolling hills grassy fields and rocky pathway into Priority Mailboxes but Eileen is a magician when it comes to shipping The boxes havenrsquot shown evidence of grasses growing out of any openings but the weeds are choking the path and fence line of the cute little Pumpkin Parade so I wouldnrsquot be surprised if that grass just grows right outta the package
Kit 2 will be ready to follow about a month later with gnarled trees (complete with a little owl or goblin peeking out between the branches) a startled Man in the Moon bats a flyinrsquo and distant pumpkins adorning the horizon Another packing challenge for Ms Eileen
Kit 3 will start the little witch characters and who knows what fun will be in store for you then

How about something completely different
stitch of the monthWith Autumn in full glory this month we see gourds and pumpkins everywhere
Every church and school yard is filled with farmer sales of the beautiful lumpy globes sometimes with a fun hayride thrown in for good measure Most doorstep art includes
a few orange beauties Needlepoint designs are no different Pumpkins and fun gourds are popular additions to Halloween Thanksgiving and Autumn themes Needlepoint pumpkins come in all sizes small medium and large Sometimes they sport faces making them into Jack-O-Lanterns Sometimes they are shaded with lines to indicate indentions and sometimes painted all one color We thought you might enjoy a few suggestions for stitching your pumpkins

Amyrsquos
What can you do with your pumpkins
If you wish to round out and raise up a small
n e e d l e p o i n t pumpkin try
using Padded Satin You can pad a
small round area with a Smyrna Cross or just multiple layers of Satin Using a Rhodes Stitch for a small round pumpkin is cute but it may not be the look you are going for as it gives a spiral staircase sort of look with the stitches building up unevenly over the surface Straight Horizontal Satin for individual sections is effective Shading can easily be added to the sections with a second layer of shorter stitches worked with a darker color

mediumpumpkins
Some pumpkins have a rough surface For that bumpy-shell look dig through stitch diagrams looking
at the crossed stitches in various patterns Staggered Smyrna Cross or Staggered Leviathan are both good
choices
Add some bling to your ldquoFruits of Autumnrdquo with beading Stitch Beading
can allow intricate shading changing
colors with each stitch Using Bricked Beading you can shade
by changing beading thread color as well as changing the
colors of the beads
Changing the angle of Satin Stitch in these slightly larger pumpkins can give the depth and curve of the pumpkin sections Using the principles of depth in stitches and color (see Chapter 3 Mysteries of Needlepoint Book
Club)

13
Amyrsquos
What can you do with your pumpkins
If you wish to round out and raise up a small
n e e d l e p o i n t pumpkin try
using Padded Satin You can pad a
small round area with a Smyrna Cross or just multiple layers of Satin Using a Rhodes Stitch for a small round pumpkin is cute but it may not be the look you are going for as it gives a spiral staircase sort of look with the stitches building up unevenly over the surface Straight Horizontal Satin for individual sections is effective Shading can easily be added to the sections with a second layer of shorter stitches worked with a darker color

can allow intricate shading changing
colors with each stitch Using Bricked Beading you can shade
by changing beading thread color as well as changing the

stitch of the monthWith Autumn in full glory this month we see gourds and pumpkins everywhere

Kit 3 will start the little witch characters and who knows what fun will be in store for you then

stitch of the monthWith Autumn in full glory this month we see gourds and pumpkins everywhere

Club)

stitch of the monthWith Autumn in full glory this month we see gourds and pumpkins everywhere

Club)
