I have never in my 21 years on thisplanet ever ventured, in any shape ororm to the part o the world calledIreland, neither north nor south. Ialways eel that I should go, but theopportunity has never arisen. St.Patricks day in Dublin (as I have beentold) is shit-hot, so I dont know whyI dont just get a cheap fight over. I

think I know what Im going to do thissummer.

But, I have been indulging in ahealthy dose o Irish rock music aso late. One band in particular havetwisted, controlled and captivated mymusical mind into a well-ashionedattractive mush. Adebisi Shank haveuncompromisingly been creating a trulyone-o-kind sound since the release otheir 1st EP This is the EP o a bandcalled Adebisi Shank in 2007. Thebrute-orce and rawness on such tracksas Horse & Jump Cut showed thetrue talent that the Irish instrumentaltrio possessed in their song writing andshowmanship.

Adebisi Shank are a loud, eccentric, energetic, electric and elegantlyexperimental band who predominantlymake their music with guitar, bass anddrums. Yet their noise is a thick and

well-crated powerhouse o magicallicks, bleeps, tinks, booms and glitchesmade with a sea o pedals and knobs;an orchestra o power uzz.

With the introduction o their 1st and(most recently) 2nd album, the bandrom Wexord, Ireland have honedtheir style, proving that their music isterric and terriyingly addictive. Theiralbums, although both brilliant, eachshed a contrasting light on the band,This is the Album o a band called

Adebisi Shank is a truly powerul

LP which is ast paced, distorted andcompellingly amiliar throughout.

Whilst the aptly (you guessed it) namedThis is the Second Album o a bandcalled Adebisi Shank shows right romthe word go, (well in this case theword International Dreambeat) thatthe album is very dierent rom thelast. The 2nd LP is more studio basedopposed to the live eel o the 1st, moreeects, processors and electronic basedsounds are at work here, creating botha more varied and broad sound.

Adebisi Shank are becoming moreand more well known with every gig, record, review and music video. Theirincreasing popularity has landed themsome brilliant opportunities over thepast ew years, whether its touringJapan, playing SXSW over in the States, signing to Sargent House records oreven being nominated or a Choice

Music Prize, they have done some epicstu.

So make sure you dont let these titans, these mammoths o instrumentalalternative rock pass you by, youllregret it.

    ACROSSTHE POND

    As an American transplant

living abroad in London, I nd

myself absorbed in a new town,

    a new scene and, naturally,

a breadth of new music. As

    much fun and illuminating as

    the immersion into all things

Blighty has been, my bouts of

    acute nostalgia for Jersey

    post-punk, Midwest math-rock,

    and California easycore are

    frequent. By looking for

    inspiration across the pond,

I hope to regularly suggest a

    crop of great North American

    acts and some standout tracks

    to get you started.

    REVIEW

Shapes have a brilliant talent o bringing discord, conusion and mayhem intotheir songs without it becoming a mess. Their songs are loud, angry and passionatewhilst always pushing the boundaries o their musical abilities to the limit (whichis very ar indeed).

Shapes rst graced our ears in early 2008 with their debut EP Get Your Learn On,and what a stonker o an EP it is. 2009 saw the band sign to Big Scary Monsters andthe release o their second EP, The Pasture, The Oil, with hard hitting guitars, bassand constant changes in tempo. Where some bands would ail miserably, Shapesreally pulled this one out o the hat. This EP was a sterling progression rom therst, whenever I give it a listen I eel like Im listening to some sort o Mculsky/Mars

Volta hybrid; not two bands Id ever really place in the same sentence but Shapesseem to have captured elements o each with this EP.The Pasture, The Oil, was also released as a remix albumeaturing various artists. I enjoy the odd remix rom timeto time, its nice to hear another artists take on a song.I I had to choose my avorite track o the remix album itwould have to be Such Stoics (remixed by Jarvis Talons)because its a nice contrast rom the original. AlongsideBSM, Japanese label Zankyo Records released both EPs

to the Japanese market and as a natural progressionthey headed over to Tokyo to tour. The more I look at itthe more I realise that the Japanese have an incredibletaste in music. The past year has seen Shapes tour thecountry with the likes o Okay Pilot, Glassjaw and Pulled

Apart By Horses. The Birmingham based three piece areset to release their brand new debut ull-length albumMonotony Chic, the album was recorded in Sweden withproducers Eskil Lvstrm & Pelle Henricson ( Reused,Poison the Well, Hell is or Heroes). Expect to hear a newside rom the band.

listened to the mini album over 6 times, but I couldnt care less. Each song ismore addictive and endearing than

the last, imposing vocals cut throughthe crunched guitars with delight and

Hello you avid MM readers and welcome to Top 5, where we count down

the most brilliant and bodacious features in music. In each issue

I hope to bring something new, elegant, enthralling and exciting to

Musical Mathematics. This time I am taking a look at 5 duos/two piece

bands that often confuse the average person. Why dont they just get

a bass player?! I hear you say Its an intimate clash of two minds

coming together to make music, which can be both simple and yet often

complex. So, lets have a look mofuckerrzz.

For the rst edition of Where on

    Earth? the spotlight is glowing

over France. 2011 has been an

exciting year so far for our

    brothers across the channel and

the bands below really show the

    incredible talent that is brewing

over there. Lets hope they will

all be coming over to our British

    ears sometime soon.

Heliport Desarroi Esthetique-Ater two years o production Desarroi

Esthetique is the highly anticipatedalbum rom Heliport. From start

to nish, this album is captivatingwith its interesting combination omelodic vocals and punk rhythms.

Post Card From The North is a brilliantexample o Heliports bilingual lyricwriting skills whilst Polar Elsewhere

emphasises the awesome tones o Giisbass that sounds so rad live! Finishingon the title track, apparently about a

narcissistic publicist rom the 90s, thissong rounds up the album perectly

MM: Since Blakfsh how do you eelthe three o you have progressed asmusicians? Have you changed yourapproach to writing songs?

&: The song writing process haschanged quite a lot, nothing ispreconceived. All our songs are written

rom bouncing ideas about. From thisI think everyone is more condent; Ihave suggested guitar ideas (in a vaguemanor) as well as the guys suggestingdrum ideas.

MM: More and more bands nowadaysare releasing material on vinyl, doyou think this is a dying ad or isthere a uture or this type o media?

&: Vinyl is a nice idea but costs toomuch to make. I think vinyl willcarry on though. Youll always have

collectors, even i they dont listen tothem and just have them on a shel tolook at.

MM: Hey hey guys! Just to start us o

what did you have or lunch today?

&: A Piri Piri Chicken baguette,Worcester sauce crisps and a can oginger beer.

    Q&A

From the ashes o Colour (two-thirdso them, to be exact) up rises TangledHair. This debut EP rom the trio -although the demo itsel denitelydeserved its own ull release - willundoubtedly be endlessly compared to

Alan Welshs and James Troods ormerband. However, ater just one listento Apples, its clear that they havedenitely evolved musically and appliednew infuences to their new musicalproject, especially with the inclusion obassist Alex Lloyd.

This is math pop at its best, withdashes o jazzy infuences omnipresentin Welshs guitar work. The vocals areripe or gig sing-alongs, the melodiesare made to dance to, and the timesignatures are as unconventional asit can be beore it starts becomingan incoherent mess. Intricate and

unpredictable in equal measure, Applesis a gloriously layered record. I itdoesnt catch you at rst try, then bepatient and it will grow on you. This isan EP worth your time and eort.

    &U&I

THIS IS MATH POP AT ITS BEST,WITH DASHES OF JAZZY INFLUENCES

    &U&I play heavy math-rock/hardcore, and

they play it fantastically. After an

outstanding tour this year, a brilliant

single and an album in the pipeline,

theyre already on track to smash it this

year! We caught up with Wiz to talk about

    touring, recording and chicken baguettes.

MM: So, whats the story behind thename &U&I?

&: Its a song by Yes, we just liked theway name is also a logo.

MM: When you guys are out andabout on tour are there any vitalthings you cant go without (besidesyour instruments)? Equally are thereany tour van rules?

&: Youve always got to have a pillow.General van rule is Peckett cant passwind Which gets broken too much.

MM: Do the three o you have anyjoint pet hates?

&: Errrm, probably. Actually, I dontknow.

MM: As &U&I, which town has givenyou the best audience or your showssince last year?

&: Weve had a good ride so ar. Weveonly put one gig down to being bad. Idsay a gig we did in Leicester a couple oweeks back was a strong on e Its hardto pick.

MM: Your E.P. Kill the Man that Shotthat Man came out last October,it eatured the song The Boy withthe Beard. It diers in sound to therest o the release, is there a reasonbehind this or did you just ancy achange rom the heavier stu?

&: It was something Rich was playing, sowe just started jamming it and decidedto use it. Although we all like the songI think itll be the last &U&I song youllhear in that dynamic or a while.

MM: I you could cover one songwhat would it be and why?

&: Ive always wanted to cover a Meetin St Louis song, just to say that wewere actually able to play it.

MM: Have you bought any goodrecords lately? Or do you preer thedigital variety?

&: I went to see Glassjaw last monthin London. On the way out they werehanding out Colouring Book their newrecord It is incredible. Massivelydierent to anything previous so takesa ew listens. I seriously recommend it.

MM: I you could orm and manageyour own dream band, who (dead oralive) would eature in it and why?

&: Abe Cunningham (Detones) ondrums, Jason Rosethal (On the Mighto Princes) on guitar, Manny (Glassjaw)on bass and Greg Puciato (DillengerEscape Plan) on vocals. Id call them*THE ANGELS OF DEATH*

MM: Asides rom touring what doesthe rest o 2011 have in store or&U&I?

&: We are o to Lisbon, Portugal inJune to record our debut album with

Chris Common (drummer rom TheseArms Are Snakes).

    CLUB,

    10TH

MAY On rst, Shapes unleashed a cascade o progressive math rock/alt-punk to

start the evening at the Brudenell Social Club with a bang. They certainlywerent monotonous by any means. Discordant, chaotic and intense yetextremely tight and precise; Shapes showed why they are one o the mostexciting technical hardcore bands in the UK right now.

&U&I hit Leeds with their own brand o alternative rock, punk andpost-hardcore on the 10th with extreme passion. Although inevitably, comparisons will be made with their previous band, but &U&I is not justBlaksh minus Sam Manville, its a dierent beast altogether. That night atthe Brudenell, some may have come because o past associations, but manywill leave in love with this new incarnation, and why not? The combination

o harsh ris, renetic drumming, and driving basslines - complementedwith sporadic bursts o chaos - resulted in a very satisying, condent liveperormance rom the Birmingham trio.

Adebisi Shank are the very denition o well-crated chaos, and theBrudenell lay witness to that immutable act. The tenacity and power otheir live shows were turned to 11 at the Brudenell right rom the very rstnote they played. The audience were constantly bombarded by the bandwith st-pumping, heart-thumping hooks and beats, and they respondedby absolutely adoring the band or it. Every single minute was an orgy osound, sweat and syncopated ris.

Yet another class night put on by Dirty Otter promoters it seems. Hip-Hip!Pat yoursel on the back.
